First UTEP avoided embarrassment in a 24-14 season-opening victory against Stephen F. Austin. Then they generated some real reason for hope. After digging an early 14-3 hole against the Football Championship Subdivision Lumberjacks, the Miners didn't give up a point in the final 42 minutes while forcing two turnovers and slamming the door shut for the win. Quarterback Gavin Hardison made good use of his primary targets Jacob Cowing and Justin Garrett, and tailback Deion Hankins, a Parkland alum, flashed some moments of brilliance that made him one of the great tailbacks in El Paso high school history. "Our defense started playing at a dominant level," coach Dana Dimel said after winning an opener for the second consecutive season. "You could see how much more athletic we are defensively with what we're doing, so much more quick twitch on our football team. "I noticed how much faster we were playing, how more physical we were playing. We're in that stage where we're learning how to win football games. Offensively we had some play makers step up and make some plays for us."

The defense turned the game around with a turnover to set up a go-ahead touchdown at the end of the first half. UTEP turned a 14-3 deficit into a 17-14 halftime lead in the space of two and a half minutes, then got a Duron Lowe end zone interception in the fourth quarter when SFA seemed poised to retake the lead. "That was a great play and it wasn't easy," Dimel said of Lowe's interception that was the play of the game. "That was a winning play, a big difference in this ball game." "They are a big smash-post-corner team in the red zone," Lowe said. "I saw No. 1 (Jermiah Miller) run a smash route, I sunk and made a play on the ball. That got us the ball back." - El Paso Times

Working under offensive coordinator Larry Fedora, the Bears hope Brewer won't take as many hits this season. Throughout preseason drills, Brewer has focused on releasing the ball quicker and staying in the pocket longer to avoid get slammed by defenders. "Coach Fedora has helped me a lot, just getting a good grasp of the offense and really just understanding the scheme and what we're trying to do," Brewer said. "I think he's helped me a lot with my feet, whether it's dropback or one-step quick game. He emphasizes getting the ball out quick. I do feel like my arm is stronger. I feel like my shoulder is healthy." Brewer put up big numbers last season as he completed 64.5 percent of his passes for 3,161 yards and 21 touchdowns with just seven interceptions in 389 attempts. Brewer has seen strong progression in the offensive line as veterans like center Xavier Newman-Johnson, left tackle Connor Galvin and guard-tackle Casey Phillips have led a unit that appears to be much improved over last season.

The addition of UCLA grad transfer right tackle Jake Burton will also give Baylor's offensive line a lift. "I'm impressed with the improvement and the attitude and the work ethic of our offensive line," said Baylor coach Dave Aranda. "I feel like it's going to be a strength of our team, and I feel like the attitude and the edge that is developing there is a real positive for us and something that can lead out in front as compared to kind of supplementing from behind." Brewer has worked on improving his footwork in the pocket, which could help him get in position to make quicker, more accurate passes. Fedora's up-tempo offensive scheme should also allow Brewer to release the ball faster. "I've worked on a multitude of things, and I think that ties in with your feet," Brewer said. "Having good feet in the pocket I think is going to help me this year, help our offense and probably will limit the chance of getting injured." - Waco Tribune Herald

Brewer, out of Lake Travis, helped elevate the Bears last season by leading them to 11 wins and a Sugar Bowl appearance, a major leap from their one-win season two years prior. He's never been one to holster his deep ball; he completed at least one 40-yard pass in eight different games last year, including four of them in a double-digit win at Oklahoma State. The biggest question is about Brewer's health. Former Bears coach Matt Rhule previously said Brewer suffered three concussions in his career, including last year's Big 12 championship game, in which he was removed. Baylor's calling card in 2019 was its fortified defense, which managed to check the majority of its Big 12 counterparts. But only two starters are back from that defense. Combine that with a new coaching staff and Brewer's arm appears vital to the Bears remaining near the top of the conference. - Austin American Statesman

  08/27/20 - Skyler ThomasrSr/2022, Liberty, 5-09, 184 (DS#91 CB) + More +

Despite entering his name in the NCAA transfer portal last week, Washington State's Skyler Thomas will stay put this fall and finish his college career with the Cougars. Thomas announced the news Monday morning on Twitter: "I will be pulling my name from the transfer portal and returning to WSU." The Pacific-12 Conference's postponement of fall football two weeks ago prompted the Southern California native to enter his name in the portal and seek opportunities elsewhere. While the Pac-12 and Big Ten have moved on from the idea of playing this fall, the Big 12, Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conference still plan on a season starting next month. Thomas' WSU teammate, wide receiver Tay Martin, made a similar decision and found a vacant scholarship at Oklahoma State, announcing his transfer to the Big 12 Cowboys on Saturday. - Spokesman-Review

Last season, Brewer led the Bears to an 11-3 record and a Sugar Bowl appearance as he threw for 3,161 yards and 21 scores. "Whether it's on Zoom or now when we're actually getting to meet, the thing that I can tell you is football is extremely important to him," Fedora said. "He is concerned about every detail of what we're doing and why we're doing it and what other guys are doing within the concept, so that he has a good grasp of it. He's got great football savvy. He understands the game of football."

Brewer is looking forward to running Fedora's up-tempo offense since it's similar to the scheme he played in at Lake Travis High School. "We're going to play with a lot of tempo, we're going to play fast," Brewer said. "The ball is going to be out of my hand quickly. We're still going to establish a run game as well as take a lot of shots down the field. So I think you're going to see some fast tempo and a lot of big plays. We've got the guys who can do it and I think we've got the system that will allow us to do that." - Waco Tribune Herald

Baylor practice will look different for the upcoming season due to the pandemic. There will be social distancing, face masks and other precautions to limit the possibility of COVID-19 contamination. Three months after the coronavirus shut down the Baylor campus, the football team will take its first steps back with voluntary strength and conditioning workouts beginning throughout the upcoming week. Baylor plans to return 20 players per day Monday through Thursday for coronavirus testing. Twenty players returned early for injury rehab and all tested negative for COVID-19.

Like all NCAA football teams, the Bears hope to begin their season as scheduled Sept. 5 against Ole Miss at NRG Stadium in Houston. But much will depend on whether the coronavirus pandemic is under better control. "I told our staff this is just the start of the race," said Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades. "We have a formidable opponent in COVID-19, and so much of how we finish is dependent on how we start the race. I'm at great peace that we have a real thoughtful plan on how we'll onboard our student-athletes." - Waco Tribune Herald

Quarterback Charlie Brewer and linebacker Terrel Bernard provided crucial leadership throughout Baylor's run to the 2019 Big 12 championship game and the program's first Sugar Bowl appearance in 63 years. After the coronavirus outbreak forced Baylor students off campus in mid-March, the Bears have needed their leadership more than ever. Brewer and Bernard have helped keep their teammates bonded with daily communication through phone calls, texts and virtual meetings. Nobody knows the pulse of the team better. The Big 12 announced Friday that football players can return to campus June 15 for voluntary conditioning and training exercises. But Brewer and his teammates will be excited for the day when they will be cleared for team workouts. "Hopefully we can get back sooner than later," Brewer said. "It's been way too long. I think a lot of our guys have taken advantage of this time apart, but we have to hit the ground running when we return."

Nobody is more respected on the team than Brewer, who is entering his fourth season as the starting quarterback. Brewer has passed for 7,742 career yards and 51 touchdowns while rushing for 885 yards and 18 scores heading into his senior year. But it's his toughness and willingness to sacrifice for the team that have enhanced his leadership skills. He's liked the way his teammates have responded to his leadership during their time apart for the last 2 1/2 months. "I think everyone is doing a great job of holding people accountable, and that starts with me," Brewer said. "I need to know myself inside and out, and I have to set the example and let other people see I'm doing everything I can right now for the team. That includes what we need to be doing strength and conditioning wise. I think a lot of teammates have taken it very seriously and understand what we need to do to reach our goals." - Waco Tribune Herald

  05/21/20 - Antonio Gandy-GoldenSr/2020, Liberty, 6-4, 223 (DS#13 WR) + More +

Former Liberty wide receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden announced Wednesday he tested positive for the novel coronavirus prior to the NFL Draft but made a full recovery in time for the Washington Redskins to select him in the fourth round. Gandy-Golden described his symptoms as "mild" following a March 24 diagnosis. He said he self-quarantined for two weeks and was cleared to return April 7. The Redskins drafted him 2 1/2 weeks later on the final day of the three-day NFL Draft. "I feel 100% now and can't wait to get on the field for the Redskins ASAP!" Gandy-Golden said in a statement released by his agent.

Tuesday evening, Liberty President Jerry Falwell Jr. hinted at Gandy-Golden's positive test during an appearance on Fox News. "Even the one student, who was an online student who never was on campus and tested positive, it turns out he quit school to go into the NFL Draft back early in March, even though he was online, but somehow that got press," Falwell said on "The Ingraham Angle." - Lynchburg News and Advance

The NCAA has proposed a plan to allow college athletes opportunities to earn money for endorsements and other activities involving personal appearances. But college coaches don't want the new legislation to give some schools greater advantages in attracting recruits or open the door for boosters or agents to have a major influence. There are many key details that must be worked out before NCAA membership votes on legislation in January 2021. Baylor is like most schools in that coaches are working with compliance officials in seeking details on the parameters that this new NCAA proposal will entail.

"I think anything that benefits the student-athlete generally would be the thought," said Baylor football coach Dave Aranda. "But there's still a lot that has to be worked out. I know that I've got questions. A lot of it is kind of conceptual right now. So now it's the ability to move to the next phase with real pointed questions in terms that there are some tentacles that go different varying ways." Under the proposal, athletes will be able to earn money on their names, Images and likenesses. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith, who led the group that produced the recommendations approved by the NCAA Board of Governors, said there will be no cap on what athletes can earn but he does believe the NCAA should determine fair market values for various opportunities to earn compensation. - Waco Tribune
