2022 PRESEASON JOHNNY UNITAS GOLDEN ARM AWARD WATCH LIST: Charlie Brewer, Liberty,...This is the second time in Brewer's career he has been named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list. After leading Baylor to an appearance in the 2020 Sugar Bowl and 11-3 record, Brewer was named to the watch list prior to the 2020 season. During his four-year playing career at Baylor (2017-20), Brewer led the Bears with 9,700 passing yards and 65 touchdowns. He is the second player in Baylor history with 10,000 career total yards (9,700 passing and 1,039 rushing). The quarterback also completed 63.5 percent of his pass attempts at Baylor (828-of-1,304) in 44 career games. The native of Austin, Texas, has been named to multiple preseason award watch lists during his playing career: 2020 Davey O'Brien Award, 2020 Maxwell Award, 2020 Manning Award, 2020 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the 2019 Maxwell Award watch list. - Liberty Football

It's the obvious first choice to watch as Hugh Freeze and quarterbacks coach Kent Austin have to replace Malik Willis' production from the past two seasons. Willis rewrote the record books in leading the Flames to their first finish in the Associated Press Top 25 poll after the 2020 campaign, and he was selected by the Tennessee Titans in the third round of the NFL Draft. Freeze and Austin didn't name a starter or eliminate the four scholarship quarterbacks from contention after spring practice.

They wanted to see if Utah transfer Charlie Brewer and holdovers Johnathan Bennett, Kaidon Salter and Nate Hampton could make strides over the summer and enter training camp with a leg up on the others. Brewer has the experience with 47 starts at Baylor and Utah, while the other three have not started a game at the college level. He transferred to Liberty with the expectation of starting, and his success previously running an RPO offense at Baylor provides him with the opportunity to take the first snap at Southern Miss. - Lynchburg News and Advance

The kickoff times and television selections for Liberty's first three games of the 2022 season were set Thursday afternoon by ESPN. The Flames' first two games against Southern Miss and UAB will be streamed on ESPN+, while a Sept. 17 showdown at Wake Forest will be broadcast on the ACC Network. Liberty's Sept. 3 season opener against Southern Miss at M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, will kick off at 7 p.m. The matchup concludes a home-and-home series that began with the Flames claiming a 56-35 win on Oct. 24, 2020, in Lynchburg. The Flames' home opener on Sept. 10 at Williams Stadium against UAB will start at 6 p.m. This also serves as the conclusion of a home-and-home series against the Blazers. Liberty pulled away in the second half for a 36-12 win on Oct. 2, 2021, in the inaugural game at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama. The Flames' matchup against Wake Forest will be the first of two games against ACC teams in 2022. Liberty welcomes Virginia Tech to Williams Stadium on Nov. 19. - Lynchburg News and Advance

Former Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer is transferring to Liberty for his final season of college eligibility, according to reports. Brewer played four seasons for the Bears from 2017-20, and was a key player for the 2019 team that made the Big 12 championship game and reached the Sugar Bowl. Since the 2020 season didn't count against eligibility due to COVID-19, Brewer transferred to Utah in 2021 and played in the first three games before leaving the team when he was replaced at quarterback by Cameron Rising. - Waco Tribune Herald

Charlie Brewer threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns in his Utah debut to help the No. 24 Utes beat Weber State 40-17 on Thursday night. Dalton Kincaid caught four passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns in the opener for both teams. Tavion Thomas ran for 107 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries in his Utah debut. Brewer beat out Cameron Rising for the starting quarterback job in camp and did not disappoint. He was crisp on many throws and gave Utah a legitimate passing attack it lacked at times last season. "I thought he was very poised in the pocket," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "He did a nice job keeping his eyes downfield. He was accurate...Did a good job of running the offense." Bronson Barron threw for 213 yards and a touchdown for Weber State, but the Wildcats had just 57 yards rushing. - AP College Football/Utah Football

There's no ifs, ands or ORs about it: Charlie Brewer is the starting quarterback for Utah's season opener against Weber State. The Utes released their first depth chart of the 2021 season, and it lists the Baylor grad transfer as the starter at quarterback, with Cameron Rising the backup. The Utes open the season against the Wildcats on Thursday, Sept. 2 at 5:30 p.m. MDT at the newly renovated Rice-Eccles Stadium. Brewer, a senior, was considered a leading candidate for the starting position, as he came to Utah after starting for four seasons at Baylor and has thrown for 9,700 yards and 65 touchdowns in his college career.

Rising, a sophomore, was the Game 1 starter for Utah last season before going down with a season-ending injury just one quarter into the year. The 6-foot-1, 208-pound Brewer was named to the team's 16-man leadership council earlier this week and has been named to the preseason watch lists for the Davey O'Brien Award (nation's best college quarterback) and Maxwell Award (college player of the year). During the Utes' spring game in April, Brewer showed off his potential by completing 15 of 15 passes for 151 yards, two touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 228.6 in just one half of play. - Deseret News

The University of Utah has its next starting quarterback. Charlie Brewer will start the Sept. 2 season-opener vs. in-state FCS power Weber State at Rice-Eccles Stadium (5:30 p.m., Pac-12 Networks), multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told The Salt Lake Tribune on Monday morning. After Saturday's fall camp-ending live scrimmage at Rice-Eccles Stadium, Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said he and his staff would make a decision later in the day, with the pick set to take over the offense when practice reconvened on Monday, 11 days until the opener. But on Monday afternoon, Whittingham said only that a full depth chart would be released later this week. - Salt Lake Tribune

The long-awaited, much-ballyhooed quarterback competition between Charlie Brewer and Cam Rising commences when the University of Utah football team opens fall camp on Wednesday afternoon. Brewer, a graduate transfer from Baylor, has the hype, thanks to a resume that includes 9,700 passing yards and 65 touchdowns across 44 games for the Big 12 program. Rising, a fourth-year sophomore, is not the incumbent, per se, but has already won the job once. Last season, Rising overcame another graduate transfer in South Carolina's Jake Bentley to win the job and started the season-opener vs. USC, but was lost for the season on the 14th offensive snap to a shoulder injury.

So here we are: another training camp, another Utes quarterback competition on deck. Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham has never been one to fully show his cards when it comes to any position battle, but he made one thing about the timing of his choice clear when he spoke to The Salt Lake Tribune last week at Pac-12 media day. "Sooner rather than later," Whittingham said when asked what his decision timeframe was to choose a quarterback. "As soon as we see that separation. As soon as we see it." - Salt Lake Tribune

Utah's 73-play effort on Saturday was no different, but the 6,500 present and the rest of the fans watching on Pac-12 Networks should be left thinking about two things. In the immediate aftermath of the 15th and final spring practice, Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said he believes this incarnation of the Utes is "going to be a complete football team." Furthermore, he stayed with an ongoing spring storyline by heaping praise upon Charlie Brewer, and with good reason. Brewer, a graduate transfer from Baylor, looked in complete control Saturday, going 15 for 15 for 151 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. It should be noted that the defense was not allowed to hit Brewer, so a handful of his dropbacks would have resulted in sacks during a real game, but no matter.

Saturday marked Brewer's unofficial public unveiling in a Utah uniform, and he did not disappoint. "Clean, just like he's been all spring," Whittingham said. "He's a quick decision-maker, he's accurate, he gets the ball out of his hands quickly, he does a good job protecting the football. What you saw today is what we've been seeing all spring long, so it's going to be a great battle between him and Cam [Rising] come fall camp for that No. 1 spot. Charlie has really done an outstanding job of integrating into our program." - Salt Lake Tribune

Utah's quarterback competition has not started yet, not really anyway. Whittingham has already made clear that Cameron Rising will get his shot during fall camp, when his surgically repaired right shoulder should allow him to compete at full strength. As Brewer seemingly continues to impress behind closed doors with no media access this spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as Whittingham continues to sound like he has found something at the most-important position on the field, can Rising legitimately still win the job he won out of fall camp last season before getting hurt in the opener?

We're not going to find that out until August, but in March and April, Brewer has clearly shown something after 9,700 passing yards, almost 11,000 yards of total offense, and 87 touchdowns in four seasons in the Big 12. "He does all the little things that make the difference between being just average and being really good," Whittingham said. "He's paid that price and it didn't start during spring ball. It started from the day he stepped on campus. He's been in that playbook, and in the film room, and what we see out on the field is the product of all that hard work." - Salt Lake Tribune

Baylor transfer Charlie Brewer continues to solidify himself as Utah's No. 1 quarterback as the Utes work through the fourth week of spring practices. Coach Kyle Whittingham was asked Tuesday if any QB has separated himself from the rest of the group. "Charlie Brewer, hands down. He's been everything we've hoped he'd be to this point. He's a proven vet," he said. "He's got a lot of experience under his belt at the Power Five level. He's thrown for a ton of yards and he's won a ton of games. That's what we expected. So far, he's been exactly what we've expected." During spring camp, Brewer, a senior, has been competing with a group of freshmen - Peter Costelli, Ja'Quinden Jackson, Cooper Justice and Bryson Barnes. Fans will be able to catch Brewer's first public performance as a Ute during the spring game on April 17 at Rice-Eccles Stadium. "Charlie Brewer, hands down.   University of Utah graduate transfer quarterback Charlie Brewer attempted over 1,300 passes across 44 games for Baylor from 2016-19. The other four Utes quarterbacks available during spring practice are freshmen, with a combined zero collegiate snaps between them. Taking all of that information into account as Utah finishes up its second week of spring ball, it stands to reason that Brewer would seize early control of a quarterback competition that will surely drag into the summer. After Kyle Whittingham spoke on the matter Friday morning, that assumption would be correct. "First of all, Charlie Brewer is quite a bit ahead of everybody else," the 17th-year Utah head coach said on a Zoom call with reporters. "The other four are freshmen, that's to be expected. Charlie's a senior with a lot of experience under his belt. The other four guys have almost no Division I experience, so that's no surprise to us. That's how things are unfolding to this point." Brewer may be ahead of everyone else, but all of Whittingham's quarterback options are not yet available, which is why this competition will eventually move to fall camp. - Salt Lake Tribune

Kyle Whittingham has four high-profile, Power Five transfers at his disposal as spring practice rolls on at the University of Utah, two at quarterback and two at running back. They may all be transfers, but they're not all in the same boat. As a graduate transfer from Baylor, quarterback Charlie Brewer is eligible immediately for the Utes. Normally, freshman quarterback Ja'Quinden Jackson, junior running back T.J. Pledger, and redshirt sophomore running back Chris Curry would have to either sit one season, or petition the NCAA for an immediate-eligibility waiver. The need for Jackson, Pledger and Curry to all sit out the 2021 season may soon disappear, though. On Wednesday, the NCAA Division I Council reaffirmed its preference to vote as soon as April on a legislative proposal that would allow student-athletes, regardless of sport, to transfer one time without having to sit a season as penalty. - Salt Lake Tribune

In January, the NCAA will likely pass legislation that would allow student-athletes to transfer once without the penalty of having to sit out for one season. "There will probably be more change and movement that's going to occur," Whittingham said. "That's the way it seems to be heading. You've got to adjust as things change and try to get yourself in the best situation." The day after Utah's season ended, two quarterbacks announced they were joining the Utes: Baylor grad transfer Charlie Brewer and Texas transfer Ja'Quinden Jackson. In December, Utah also signed four-star recruit Peter Costelli. Brewer led Baylor to an 11-1 record, a spot in the Big 12 championship game and a Sugar Bowl appearance in 2019. - Deseret News

Former Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer announced Sunday that he's transferring to Utah for his final season of college eligibility. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 season didn't count against players' eligibility. All transfers are eligible to play in 2021. Brewer started four seasons for the Bears and finished with 9,700 yards passing, which ranks second in school history behind Robert Griffin III's 10,366. Brewer also ranks second in school history with 65 touchdown passes behind Griffin's 78, and he ran for 1,039 yards and 22 touchdowns. Brewer is the second Big 12 quarterback to announce that he's transferring to Utah.   After four seasons as Baylor's starting quarterback, Charlie Brewer announced Sunday that he's entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer with intentions of playing his final year of eligibility at another college. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 season didn't count against players' eligibility. Like Brewer, the graduate transfer market will likely be heavy across the country. Brewer announced his plans on Twitter, saying "It is with much thought and prayer that I will be entering the transfer portal and moving on as a graduate transfer.

A heartfelt thanks to my teammates, coach (Matt) Rhule and coach (Dave) Aranda for an amazing ride the last four years here at Baylor. I will take with me a lifetime of memories and degree from Baylor University." Brewer, who was unavailable for further comment, finished his Baylor career with 9,700 yards passing, which ranks second in school history behind Robert Griffin III's 10,366. Brewer also ranks second in school history with 65 touchdown passes behind Griffin's 78, and he ran for 1,039 yards and 22 touchdowns. - Waco Tribune-Herald

In the postgame conference following Baylor's triumphant victory over Kansas State, head coach Dave Aranda and Charlie Brewer's teammates sang nothing but praises for the quarterback's dynamic performance. Brewer finally came alive last Saturday and channeled his 2019 self as he went 31 of 39 for 349 passing yards and two touchdowns. He also showed off his trademark skills as a runner, leading the Bears with 23 carries for 56 yards and a pair of touchdown runs. Brewer's teammates fed off his energy and recorded a season-high 420 yards of total offense. If the Bears can bring that same energy and confidence to Norman, they can hold their own against the Sooners. - Dallas Morning News

John Mayers kicked a 30-yard field goal on the final play of the game and Baylor beat Kansas State 32-31 Saturday night, ending the Bears' five-game losing streak. Charlie Brewer completed 31 of 39 passes for 349 yards and two touchdowns. The senior quarterback completed four passes in a row for 45 yards after it initially appeared he had fumbled on a run on the first play. Kansas State (4-5, 4-4 Big 12) has lost four in a row since starting 4-0 in conference play. The final drive for Baylor (2-5, 2-5) began from its 31 with a 5-yard run by Brewer, but with Kansas State coming up with the ball after it popped out. A long replay review determined that Brewer's knee was down before the fumble.

Brewer also ran for 56 yards and two scores, while he was sacked seven times to lose 23 yards. He had a 1-yard TD keeper with 4:16 left, before K-State went three-and-out and punted. Kansas State quarterback Will Howard threw a touchdown and ran for another, fellow true freshman Deuce Vaughn rushed for 102 yards with a score. Howard's 24-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter put K-State up 24-15, a play after his 49-yard pass to wide-open tight end Briley Moore. Vaughn's 38-yard TD run countered a Brewer TD pass to Trestan Ebner. Brewer had an 7-yard TD on a draw play to end Baylor's first drive, which was set up by the first of Howard's two interceptions. After the botched extra point, K-State went ahead when receiver Malik Knowles took a handoff on a sweep and ran 75 yards for a score. - Baylor/AP College Football

Mired in a five-game losing streak, first-year Baylor coach Dave Aranda still believes in his team and his senior quarterback. Aranda will continue to stick with fourth-year starter Charlie Brewer heading into the bye week before the Bears begin their closing three-game stretch against Kansas State on Nov. 28 at McLane Stadium. "Every game, we're fighting tooth and nail, and Charlie gives us the best opportunity to come out on top," Aranda said. "We want our best 11 out there, and quarterback is the guy we've got to have a lot of faith in." Aranda said that he talked to Brewer about a report of a death threat against him, but the quarterback told him there was nothing to it. "I approached Charlie about what took place, and we were ready to move to protect him to report to the Baylor police department, and he assured me it was nothing," Aranda said. "It was something his sister got that he didn't feel was directed at him or directed at her."

If the game circumstances are right, Aranda said he would consider playing sophomore Gerry Bohanon or redshirt freshman Jacob Zeno. Bohanon didn't travel to Texas Tech to take care of a personal issue, but Aranda said he is back with the team. Brewer has started 36 of the last 37 games since breaking into the starting lineup in the ninth game of his freshman year in 2017 when he led the Bears to a 38-9 win over Kansas in Lawrence. It was Baylor's only win in a 1-11 season during Matt Rhule's first season as head coach. - Waco Tribune

Though senior quarterback Charlie Brewer has been erratic through the first four games, Aranda likes the experience and toughness he brings to the team. Some fans were calling for redshirt freshman Jacob Zeno to come in as the TCU game dragged on, but Aranda stuck with Brewer. After hitting tight end Ben Sims on a one-yard pass for Baylor's first touchdown with 14 seconds left in the second quarter, Brewer led the Bears to 17 second-half points, including a three-yard touchdown pass to Sims. "There was a lot of positive with Charlie in that second half," Aranda said. "We've got to get it to where we're playing a complete game and Charlie's been Charlie. In speaking to him, his confidence is there, his want to perform at a real high level for the offense and for his teammates is very high. So I feel a great responsibility to do what I can to give him that opportunity." - Waco Tribune Herald

Brewer had a knack for creating big plays last season, but he's yet to provide a spark in the Bears' underperforming offense. The starting quarterback engineered Baylor's solid comeback campaign but was 17-of-37 for 203 yards and two touchdowns and was sacked five times. Despite his shortcomings, Aranda has consistently reaffirmed his faith in Brewer. "There's a lot of positive with Charlie in that second half [against TCU]," Aranda said. "We've got to get it to where we're playing a complete game and Charlie's been Charlie.   Four-year starter Charlie Brewer is the heart of the Baylor football team. It is pretty uncommon for universities to have a quarterback that starts all four years of their career, but Brewer brings consistency to Baylor's team. He has played in 38 games during his career at Baylor with 9,285 total offensive yards under his belt. He has totaled 57 passing and 18 rushing touchdowns. Brewer is one of just two returning FBS quarterbacks to pass for 20+ touchdowns and rush for 10+ touchdowns in 2019, the same year he led his team to a 8-1 Big 12 and 11-3 overall record, and eventually to the Sugar Bowl to play Georgia on New Year's Day. This season, Brewer is has a 65% completion rate with 658 total yards through just three games. - Dallas Morning News

Working under offensive coordinator Larry Fedora, the Bears hope Brewer won't take as many hits this season. Throughout preseason drills, Brewer has focused on releasing the ball quicker and staying in the pocket longer to avoid get slammed by defenders. "Coach Fedora has helped me a lot, just getting a good grasp of the offense and really just understanding the scheme and what we're trying to do," Brewer said. "I think he's helped me a lot with my feet, whether it's dropback or one-step quick game. He emphasizes getting the ball out quick. I do feel like my arm is stronger. I feel like my shoulder is healthy." Brewer put up big numbers last season as he completed 64.5 percent of his passes for 3,161 yards and 21 touchdowns with just seven interceptions in 389 attempts. Brewer has seen strong progression in the offensive line as veterans like center Xavier Newman-Johnson, left tackle Connor Galvin and guard-tackle Casey Phillips have led a unit that appears to be much improved over last season.

The addition of UCLA grad transfer right tackle Jake Burton will also give Baylor's offensive line a lift. "I'm impressed with the improvement and the attitude and the work ethic of our offensive line," said Baylor coach Dave Aranda. "I feel like it's going to be a strength of our team, and I feel like the attitude and the edge that is developing there is a real positive for us and something that can lead out in front as compared to kind of supplementing from behind." Brewer has worked on improving his footwork in the pocket, which could help him get in position to make quicker, more accurate passes. Fedora's up-tempo offensive scheme should also allow Brewer to release the ball faster. "I've worked on a multitude of things, and I think that ties in with your feet," Brewer said. "Having good feet in the pocket I think is going to help me this year, help our offense and probably will limit the chance of getting injured." - Waco Tribune Herald

Brewer, out of Lake Travis, helped elevate the Bears last season by leading them to 11 wins and a Sugar Bowl appearance, a major leap from their one-win season two years prior. He's never been one to holster his deep ball; he completed at least one 40-yard pass in eight different games last year, including four of them in a double-digit win at Oklahoma State. The biggest question is about Brewer's health. Former Bears coach Matt Rhule previously said Brewer suffered three concussions in his career, including last year's Big 12 championship game, in which he was removed. Baylor's calling card in 2019 was its fortified defense, which managed to check the majority of its Big 12 counterparts. But only two starters are back from that defense. Combine that with a new coaching staff and Brewer's arm appears vital to the Bears remaining near the top of the conference. - Austin American Statesman

Last season, Brewer led the Bears to an 11-3 record and a Sugar Bowl appearance as he threw for 3,161 yards and 21 scores. "Whether it's on Zoom or now when we're actually getting to meet, the thing that I can tell you is football is extremely important to him," Fedora said. "He is concerned about every detail of what we're doing and why we're doing it and what other guys are doing within the concept, so that he has a good grasp of it. He's got great football savvy. He understands the game of football."

Brewer is looking forward to running Fedora's up-tempo offense since it's similar to the scheme he played in at Lake Travis High School. "We're going to play with a lot of tempo, we're going to play fast," Brewer said. "The ball is going to be out of my hand quickly. We're still going to establish a run game as well as take a lot of shots down the field. So I think you're going to see some fast tempo and a lot of big plays. We've got the guys who can do it and I think we've got the system that will allow us to do that." - Waco Tribune Herald

Baylor practice will look different for the upcoming season due to the pandemic. There will be social distancing, face masks and other precautions to limit the possibility of COVID-19 contamination. Three months after the coronavirus shut down the Baylor campus, the football team will take its first steps back with voluntary strength and conditioning workouts beginning throughout the upcoming week. Baylor plans to return 20 players per day Monday through Thursday for coronavirus testing. Twenty players returned early for injury rehab and all tested negative for COVID-19.

Like all NCAA football teams, the Bears hope to begin their season as scheduled Sept. 5 against Ole Miss at NRG Stadium in Houston. But much will depend on whether the coronavirus pandemic is under better control. "I told our staff this is just the start of the race," said Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades. "We have a formidable opponent in COVID-19, and so much of how we finish is dependent on how we start the race. I'm at great peace that we have a real thoughtful plan on how we'll onboard our student-athletes." - Waco Tribune Herald

Quarterback Charlie Brewer and linebacker Terrel Bernard provided crucial leadership throughout Baylor's run to the 2019 Big 12 championship game and the program's first Sugar Bowl appearance in 63 years. After the coronavirus outbreak forced Baylor students off campus in mid-March, the Bears have needed their leadership more than ever. Brewer and Bernard have helped keep their teammates bonded with daily communication through phone calls, texts and virtual meetings. Nobody knows the pulse of the team better. The Big 12 announced Friday that football players can return to campus June 15 for voluntary conditioning and training exercises. But Brewer and his teammates will be excited for the day when they will be cleared for team workouts. "Hopefully we can get back sooner than later," Brewer said. "It's been way too long. I think a lot of our guys have taken advantage of this time apart, but we have to hit the ground running when we return."

Nobody is more respected on the team than Brewer, who is entering his fourth season as the starting quarterback. Brewer has passed for 7,742 career yards and 51 touchdowns while rushing for 885 yards and 18 scores heading into his senior year. But it's his toughness and willingness to sacrifice for the team that have enhanced his leadership skills. He's liked the way his teammates have responded to his leadership during their time apart for the last 2 1/2 months. "I think everyone is doing a great job of holding people accountable, and that starts with me," Brewer said. "I need to know myself inside and out, and I have to set the example and let other people see I'm doing everything I can right now for the team. That includes what we need to be doing strength and conditioning wise. I think a lot of teammates have taken it very seriously and understand what we need to do to reach our goals." - Waco Tribune Herald

The NCAA has proposed a plan to allow college athletes opportunities to earn money for endorsements and other activities involving personal appearances. But college coaches don't want the new legislation to give some schools greater advantages in attracting recruits or open the door for boosters or agents to have a major influence. There are many key details that must be worked out before NCAA membership votes on legislation in January 2021. Baylor is like most schools in that coaches are working with compliance officials in seeking details on the parameters that this new NCAA proposal will entail.

"I think anything that benefits the student-athlete generally would be the thought," said Baylor football coach Dave Aranda. "But there's still a lot that has to be worked out. I know that I've got questions. A lot of it is kind of conceptual right now. So now it's the ability to move to the next phase with real pointed questions in terms that there are some tentacles that go different varying ways." Under the proposal, athletes will be able to earn money on their names, Images and likenesses. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith, who led the group that produced the recommendations approved by the NCAA Board of Governors, said there will be no cap on what athletes can earn but he does believe the NCAA should determine fair market values for various opportunities to earn compensation. - Waco Tribune

Only one Baylor Bear has won the Heisman Trophy. During the 2011 season - aptly dubbed across all Baylor sports as the Year of the Bear - Robert Griffin III made history as the first to receive the award. Star quarterback Charlie Brewer could go down as one of the best in Baylor's history. Does he have a viable shot at becoming the next Heisman winner? Talent aside, Brewer's storied college career makes a compelling case. His freshman season coincided with the beginning of the Matt Rhule era.

Brewer endured the rebuilding years and helped the Bears go from a 1-11 record in 2017 to an impressive 11-3 turnaround in 2019, complete with an appearance in the Big 12 championship game and a trip to the Sugar Bowl. Brewer's production has steadily increased over the last three years - he finished last season with a career-high 3,161 passing yards and 21 touchdowns. If he can maintain that upward trajectory and have a solid senior campaign, he might be able to increase the odds of bringing the trophy back to Baylor. - Dallas Morning News

Aranda also announced Saturday the retention of Joey McGuire, who was the associate head coach who served as interim head coach after Matt Rhule became coach of the NFL's Carolina Panthers. McGuire is one of four staff members who were with Rhule all three seasons that are staying.   Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer was taken out of the Big 12 championship game Saturday not long after he bulled over an Oklahoma defender. He was ruled out for the second half. At the end of the 7-yard run early in the second quarter, Brewer put his shoulder down and knocked nickel back Brendan Radley-Hiles to the ground. The referee announced Radley-Hiles was being removed from the game for a potential head injury. Brewer finished that series and played one more after that when the Bears got a field goal to pull within 10-3. Baylor coach Matt Rhule said at halftime that Brewer wouldn't play the rest of the game. He didn't elaborate. Gerry Bohanon took over at quarterback for the Bears on the next series He threw a 33-yard touchdown pass and had another long completion to set up a late field goal that gave Baylor a 13-10 halftime lead. - AP College Football

Charlie Brewer accounted for 296 yards and two touchdowns and No. 13 Baylor wrapped up a spot in the Big 12 championship game with a 24-10 victory over Texas on Saturday, a week after the Bears missed a chance to do so with their first loss of the season. The Bears (10-1, 7-1 Big 12, No. 14 CFP) have their sixth 10-win season, and fifth since 2011. This one comes just two years after the school's only 11-loss season in coach Matt Rhule's debut when he took over in the aftermath of a sprawling sexual assault scandal that led to two-time Big 12 champion coach Art Briles getting fired 3 1/2 years ago. Texas (6-5, 4-4) lost for the third time in four games, ending its long-shot bid to get back to the Big 12 title game for the second year in a row.

Brewer, the junior quarterback from Austin whose dad and grandfather played for Texas, completed 16 of 25 passes for 221 yards with a touchdown, and ran 18 times for 75 yards and another score. But he left the game for good with 11 1/2 minutes remaining after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit when being tackled at the end of a 5-yard run. On his 1-run touchdown run in the third quarter, Brewer hopped onto the back of offensive lineman Khalil Keith when crossing the goal line. Brewer later threw a 12-yard TD pass to Denzel Mims to make it 21-3. Mims had seven catches for 125 yards, all when Brewer was still in the game. - Baylor/AP College Football

Charlie Brewer threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns and John Mayers kicked a go-ahead 36-yard field goal to help No. 12 Baylor win its 10th game in a row, 17-14 over West Virginia on Thursday night. The Bears (8-0, 5-0 Big 12), who two seasons ago won only one game, are the league's only undefeated team - and one of eight remaining among FBS teams. Mayers' kick with 10:19 left broke a 14-all tie and put Baylor ahead to stay after a 13-play drive that took more than 6 minutes off the clock on an often frustrating night offensively for the Bears.

West Virginia (3-5, 1-4) had eight quarterback sacks. With second-and-goal from the 1 late in the second quarter, Baylor was stuffed for no gain on three consecutive plays and had to settle for a 7-0 halftime lead. Still, the Bears avoided what happened last Saturday, when while they had an open date the Big 12's other three ranked teams that did play lost. That included Oklahoma's loss at Kansas State that left Baylor alone atop the conference standings. - AP College Football

JaMycal Hasty scored on a 5-yard touchdown run in the second overtime and No. 22 Baylor beat Texas Tech 33-30 on Saturday in the Bears' first game as a ranked team under coach Matt Rhule. Baylor (6-0, 3-0 Big 12), which went the length of the field at the end of regulation just to get to overtime, won on Hasty's run after Trey Wolff's 35-yard field goal for Texas Tech opened the second extra period. Charlie Brewer was 24-of-37 passing for 352 yards, but threw his first three interceptions of the season. He ran for three touchdowns, including a 1-yarder in the first overtime.

Texas Tech (3-3, 1-2), playing its third consecutive Top 25 opponent, got to the second overtime when TJ Vasher made a diving 2-yard catch on a nice lob throw by Jett Duffey for his only TD pass. Duffey finished 31 of 42 for 362 yards and two interceptions. R.J. Turner had seven catches for 138 yards. Texas Tech took a 20-17 lead on SaRodorick Thompson's second touchdown run, a 30-yarder with 1:37 left in regulation. Thompson finished with 28 carries for 153 yards and two touchdowns. The Bears then were at their own 1 after Brewer got sacked on the ensuing drive. But he then had five completions for 74 yards, including an incredible 19-yard catch along the sideline by Denzel Mims. Baylor got to the 5 before taking two more shots at Mims in the end zone. He couldn't hold onto one in traffic and then drew a defensive holding call that put the ball at the 2 with 3 seconds remaining. John Mayers then kicked a tying 19-yard field goal. - Baylor/AP College Football

Baylor starting quarterback Charlie Brewer has been cleared to practice and play for the No. 22 Bears, who will be without starting left guard Connor Galvin. Coach Matt Rhule said Monday that Brewer is fine after taking a hard hit early in the fourth quarter of Baylor's 31-12 win at Kansas State on Saturday. But Galvin will miss 4-6 weeks with an unspecified lower body injury he suffered early in the first quarter.

Brewer was evaluated after taking the hit and didn't return against K-State. While not elaborating, Rhule described that move as precautionary. The quarterback has thrown for 1,202 yards and 11 touchdowns with no interceptions this season. The Bears (5-0, 2-0 Big 12), who have a seven-game winning streak and are ranked for the first time in two years, are home Saturday against Texas Tech (3-2, 1-1). - AP College Football

Charlie Brewer led the Bears with 230 yards passing and a touchdown as Baylor got their first conference road win since beating Kansas in 2017. Baylor (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) had 426 yards of offense with only 23 minutes of possession against the Wildcats (3-2, 0-2), who have scored only two touchdowns in their last two games. "I'm really proud of our guys because this is a tough place to play with a great crowd," Baylor coach Matt Rhule said. "I thought our guys battled early, found a way to get a halftime lead and then grounded it out in the second half."

It was only the third conference road win for Baylor since 2016, and just the second for Rhule with the Bears. "I don't think they realize what they did because this is a hard place to win," Rhule said. John Lovett had a pair of touchdown runs and Gerry Bohanon added another scoring run for Baylor. Tyquan Thornton had 92 yards receiving with a touchdown. Denzel Mims hauled in 83 yards on five catches and JaMycal Hasty had 87 yards rushing. - Baylor/AP College Football

Charlie Brewer was injured early in the fourth quarter and didn't return. Brewer has thrown for 11 touchdowns without an interception this season. "I don't know anything status wise right now," Rhule said. "I know they were holding him, but other than that I probably won't know anything until later today or Monday." - Baylor/AP College Football
