  09/21/19 - Joe BurrowrSr/2020, LSU, 6-4, 221 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Joe Burrow tossed four of his school-record six touchdown passes to Ja'Marr Chase and threw for 398 yards Saturday, leading No. 4 LSU to a 66-38 romp over Vanderbilt in the Tigers' Southeastern Conference opener. LSU (4-0) beat Vanderbilt (0-3, 0-2) for the eighth straight time and improved to 12-5 all-time in Nashville in the first game between these SEC charter members since 2010. The Tigers showed off their new high-powered offense, scoring their most points this season and most ever in regulation against an SEC opponent. They needed 2:11 or less on their first seven scoring drives, and LSU scored 4 seconds after Micah Baskerville returned an onside kick 46 yards to open the third quarter on Burrow's fifth TD pass. Baskerville later blocked a punt he recovered for a TD.

Burrow had a game for the record books. He became both the first LSU quarterback to throw for 350 yards or more in three straight games, and his 357 yards passing by halftime also was the most in school history. Burrow opened the game hitting 13 of his first 14 for 244 yards before his second incompletion at 9:19 in the second quarter. He finished 25 of 34 before leaving the game early in the fourth quarter. And Burrow kept throwing to Chase. The sophomore caught TDs of 64, 25 and 51 yards in the first quarter and adding a 16-yarder in the third. He finished with 10 receptions for 229 yards, most by an LSU receiver since Odell Beckham Jr . had 204 against Furman in 2013. - LSU/AP College Football

  09/16/19 - Todd Harris Jr.rSr/2023, LSU, 5-11, 186 (DS#50 FS) + More +

LSU coach Ed Orgeron says safety Todd Harris has been ruled out for the remainder of the season because of an injury during the fourth-ranked Tigers' 65-14 victory over Northwestern State. While LSU has not disclosed specifics about Harris' condition, he had ice wrapped around his right knee when he left Saturday night's game in Tiger Stadium. Orgeron says Harris' injury was "an unfortunate accident," adding that Harris "just landed on the ground wrong."

Orgeron also said Monday that defensive linemen Rashard Lawrence and Glen Logan won't be ready to return at Vanderbilt this Saturday. Neither played last weekend because of unspecified injuries which occurred in a victory at Texas on Sept. 7. Meanwhile, Orgeron says he's received "positive news" about offensive lineman Ed Ingram's prospects for returning to the team. Ingram missed all of last season and the start of this season because of legal trouble in Texas relating to an arrest on allegations of sexual assault. Ingram started 12 games at guard as a freshman in 2017. Orgeron says he anticipates official word on whether Ingram can come back in the "next couple days." - AP College Football

  09/15/19 - Joe BurrowrSr/2020, LSU, 6-4, 221 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Joe Burrow completed 21 of 24 passes for 373 yards and two touchdowns, and fourth-ranked LSU pulled away from Northwestern State in the second half for a 65-14 victory Saturday night. Burrow has played through the third quarter only once in three games because of lopsided scores. He is now 75 of 90 (83.3 percent) passing for 1,122 yards and 11 touchdowns this season, making a case early on for the Heisman Trophy. Burrow also ran for 30 yards and a touchdown against Northwestern State (0-3), an FCS team that was surprisingly competitive in the first half before the Tigers (3-0) dominated the third quarter.

In leading LSU to the 800th victory in the program's 126-year history, Burrow also became just the school's sixth quarterback to throw for 300 or more yards in consecutive games. Only Rohan Davey did it three times in a row, a mark Burrow can match next weekend. Both of Burrow's TD tosses went to sophomore Terrace Marshall Jr., who has six touchdown catches this season after none last season. The Tigers' Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Tyrion Davis-Price each ran for two TDs and John Emery had one, while Justin Jefferson caught five passes for 124 yards. - LSU/AP College Football

  09/14/19 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU, 6-3, 210 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Jayden Daniels and Arizona State spoiled Mark Dantonio's bid for a milestone. Instead, the Michigan State coach was left to explain a chaotic finish to a disappointing home loss. Daniels directed Arizona State on a pressure-packed 75-yard drive and, after Eno Benjamin reached the ball to the goal line for a 1-yard touchdown run with 50 seconds remaining, the Sun Devils held on for a 10-7 victory over No. 18 Michigan State on Saturday. The Spartans had a tying field goal in the final seconds negated for having too many men on the field - a sour finish on a day when Dantonio had a chance to take over sole possession of the school record for victories. After falling behind late, the Spartans drove back to the Arizona State 24 and, after spiking the ball to stop the clock with 11 seconds left, they appeared to have enough time for one more throw.

But with no timeouts remaining, Michigan State (2-1) seemed indecisive, and eventually the field goal team rushed on. The Spartans barely snapped the ball in time to beat the play clock, and although Matt Coghlin's 42-yard kick went through, a replay review showed there were too many players on the field. "Initially, we were going to try to take a shot to the end zone," Dantonio said. "Then I said, 'Hey listen, we need to kick it, because if we catch the ball the game's probably over-if we catch the ball and we're not in the end zone, the game's probably over. Line up and kick it.' Our field goal kicker was a little late, sort of watching, so he runs out, the clock's ticking down. He still makes the field goal, but I'm not sure how - we had injuries on the offensive line - I think maybe one guy stayed in. I'm not sure." Coghlin had to try again from farther back, and he hooked the kick left for his third miss of the day. - AP College Football

Joe Burrow was nearly perfect in the second half against Texas. He had to be. With Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger matching him nearly blow for blow, Burrow and No. 6 LSU's new, wide-open offense could afford to make no mistakes. They didn't, and Burrow delivered all the big throws for the Tigers in a wild 45-38 win over the No. 9 Longhorns Saturday night in one of the biggest nonconference matchups of the season. Burrow passed for 471 yards and four touchdowns, the last one to Justin Jefferson for 61 yards with 2:27 to play in a game that saw Texas storm back from a 20-7 halftime deficit and the teams trade seven touchdowns in the second half.

"Man, he was so fired up," LSU coach Ed Orgeron said. "The kid is a baller. He lives for that moment and I'll tell you what, those were some tough plays" Burrow was razor sharp after halftime when he was 15-of-18 passing for 251 yards and two touchdowns. The final touchdown to Jefferson came on a third-and-long when Burrow stepped up to avoid a blitz and fired the pass. The completion was good enough for a first down and Jefferson did the rest when he broke a tackle and burst up the sideline to the end zone. "I think if they get the ball back, it would have been a different story," said Orgeron, who was watching Ehlinger riddle the Tigers defense. "A phenomenal call, a phenomenal catch, a phenomenal play." Jefferson finished with three touchdown catches and was one of three LSU receivers with more than 100 yards. - AP College Football

The Southeastern Conference held three of the top four spots in The Associated Press college football poll after LSU's road victory against Texas pushed the Tigers to No. 4. Clemson remained No. 1 on Sunday, receiving 56 first-place votes out of 62 in the Top 25 presented by Regions Bank. No. 2 Alabama received 6 first-place votes and Georgia stayed at No. 3. LSU jumped two spots after winning 45-38 at Texas on Saturday to make it three straight SEC teams after Clemson. The last conference to hold three of the top four spots in the poll was the SEC on Nov. 2, 2014, when Mississippi State was No. 1, Auburn was third and Alabama fourth. Michigan dropped three spots to No. 12 after dodging an upset, beating Army 24-21 in double-overtime. Southern California, which was unranked in the preseason for the first time since 2001, moved in at No. 24 after beating Stanford 45-20. - AP College Football

LSU quarterback Joe Burrow smiled playfully while urging reporters crowding around to him to write that the Tigers' new offense "showed everything we got - all of it," in its opener against overmatched Georgia Southern. Burrow knew no one would believe him - not with LSU's first true test against at No. 10 Texas coming up next weekend. Yet, even the plays LSU did run will put the rest of their opponents on notice that the Tigers are transformed offensively. Burrow tied an LSU single-game record with five touchdown passes before halftime and No. 6 Tigers held a multi-touchdown lead for all but the first six minutes in a 55-3 victory on Saturday night.

Unleashing a new spread scheme, the Tigers (1-0) scored 21 points in the first quarter - something they never did in any quarter last season. Their point total was the most in a non-overtime game since scoring 63 against New Mexico State in 2014. "I wanted 60 tonight," Burrow said. "We've definitely come out of the stone age." Directing his unit with pace and precision, Burrow completed 23 of 27 passes for 278 yards without an interception before being subbed out after LSU's first possession of the second half, which ended with a field goal. That was Burrow's last chance to break the LSU mark of five touchdowns in a game set by Zach Mettenberger in 2013. - AP College Football

Jayden Daniels passed for a pair of touchdowns and ran for another in his Arizona State debut, and the Sun Devils shut out the Kent State Golden Flashes for three quarters in a 30-7 win Thursday night in a season opener. Daniels finished 15 of 24 for 284 yards and two touchdowns. Arizona State has won 21 straight home openers and got its first win over a Mid-American Conference opponent. The Sun Devils held the Golden Flashes to 200 total yards - 80 passing - and recovered two fumbles. Kent State, which went with two quarterbacks in juniors Woody Barrett and Dustin Crum, lost its sixth straight opener.

Daniels, who played the entire game except for a few snaps at receiver, became the first true freshman to start the season opener in the modern era of Sun Devils football, which began in 1972 when freshmen became eligible to play. "It's the first win. Just happy, proud moment," Daniels said. "At first I was nervous but actually after the game settled down, it was just having fun playing football all over again, Pop Warner, high school and everything else." - AP College Football
