If any Arizona State fans are worried about losing coach Herm Edwards to the NFL, the ASU coach alleviated those fears earlier this week during an interview on The Herd with Colin Cowherd. Cowherd asked the Sun Devils coach if he might consider returning to the NFL, should a team come calling. "No, this is it," Edwards told Cowherd. "This is my last stand right here. I'm going to build a program and hopefully we can win the Pac-12 and hopefully win a Rose Bowl and then hand it over to somebody else. That's my goal." Edwards went 7-6 in his first season in Tempe in 2018. He went 8-5 last season and has a team projected to be a contender in the Pac-12 South in early predictions for the 2020 season.

Edwards went 54-74 in eight seasons as a coach in the NFL. He went 39-41 in five seasons with the New York Jets from 2001-05 and 15-33 in three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2006-08. Edwards said he was having a blast at ASU. "I'm having a blast. I miss my players at this point in time in the fact with the (COVID-19) virus," Edwards told Cowherd. "As we're talking, I can't say enough about all the first responders, all the medical folks all over the country. All the people that are putting their lives in harms' way trying to save those that have caught the virus. It's remarkable to see when you turn the television on and watch all these doctors and just people who continue to go into buildings knowing you know what, 'I could come out with the virus.' Those are the heroes, Colin. Those are truly the heroes." - Arizona Republic

LSU football will retain several key pieces of its national championship team, including several on the defensive side that newly hired coordinator Bo Pelini is excited to inherit. Pelini, who was hired in the offseason to replace former defensive coordinator Dave Aranda, spoke Wednesday on local radio show "Hangin' With Hester." The show was hosted by former LSU players Jacob Hester and T-Bob Hebert, who were both on the Tigers' 2007 national championship team when Pelini was in his first stint in Baton Rouge. Pelini spoke on a number of topics, including what he expects from cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., who earned All-America honors as a true freshman last season. "He's not one of those guys who's gonna rest on his laurels and say 'I've arrived,' " Pelini said on the show. "I think he's only scratched the surface on how good he's gonna be."

Another player Pelini was asked about is safety JaCoby Stevens, another member of LSU's vaunted secondary. As a junior in 2019, Stevens was one of LSU's most productive defensive backs with 85 tackles, 8½ tackles for loss, fives sacks and three interceptions. "He's going to be a guy the NFL - they're just going to be standing in line to try to get this guy on their football team because he can do so many things," Pelini said. "He's tough, he's physical, he's smart. He's got a lot of potential." - Baton Rouge Advocate

The program that put together the greatest season in college football history may be on the doorstep of making NFL draft history. The numbers LSU is shooting for: six and 14. Six is the record for No. 1 draft picks, set in 2004 by the Miami Hurricanes with the likes of Kellen Winslow, former Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma and Vince Woolfork. Fourteen is the record for most picks in a modern seven-round draft, also set that year by Ohio State, a number that included the late Will Smith with the 18th pick to New Orleans. LSU's records for the NFL draft are four No. 1 picks and nine picks overall. Four Tigers went in the first round in 2007: quarterback JaMarcus Russell with the No. 1 overall pick to Oakland, safety LaRon Landry at No. 6 to Washington, wide receiver Dwayne Bowe at No. 23 to Kansas City and receiver Craig Davis at No. 30 to San Diego (only one other LSU player was drafted that year).

Nine Tigers were selected in 2013 and 2014, players like Eric Reid, Kevin Minter, Tyrann Mathieu, Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry and Trai Turner. This year's class could eclipse them all, led by Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow, who stands to join Billy Cannon and Russell as overall No. 1 picks. LSU could have as many as five other players taken in the first round - though that doesn't quite seem likely - and up to 16 players drafted. Again, that may be pushing it, but it is possible. Three Tigers other than Burrow look like first-round locks: edge rusher K'Lavon Chaisson, wide receiver Justin Jefferson and linebacker Patrick Queen. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Eight former LSU football players will take part in the NFL draft broadcast on April 23-25, the NFL announced on Thursday. Those eight are quarterback Joe Burrow, linebacker K'Lavon Chaisson, center Lloyd Cushenberry, safety Grant Delpit, cornerback Kristian Fulton, wide receiver Justin Jefferson, tight end Thaddeus Moss and linebacker Patrick Queen. There were 58 players from around the country confirmed to participate in the new draft days set up, as the upcoming NFL draft will be completely virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic. LSU's eight leads all colleges with players taking part, with Alabama having seven players participating in the event. The SEC overall has 24 prospects participating. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  04/09/20 - *Grant DelpitJr/2020, LSU, 6-2, 213 (DS#1 SS) + More +

Lingering questions remain for NFL executives and scouts on LSU safety Grant Delpit. Last month in Indianapolis at the NFL Combine, the former Tiger, Houston native and former four-star high school prospect addressed much of the criticism that he felt has come his way from those that'll be making the decision of when to draft him in two weeks when the league conducts the NFL Draft virtually April 23-25, saying he garnered "a lot of hate and slander from the media and the experts." From the scout's perspective observing and grading Delpit's Pro Day in Baton Rouge Wednesday afternoon, the LSU safety - who has been projected as high as a late first-round draft choice - pieced together a solid performance.

Delpit didn't go through the on-field portion of the Combine, as he was coming off playing the majority of the 2019 season with a high ankle sprain but posted a 4.39 40-yard dash during his Pro Day, a number that would've been the second-fastest time behind Louisiana Tech's L'Jarius Sneed. And while the times and the measurements, at 6-2, 213, stack up to a top-round grade, the scout still wonders if Delpit's junior season with the Tigers lacked the appropriate level of motivation. "He was faster than I thought he was. He had three years at LSU. As a scout though, you ask yourself if he played better as a sophomore," the scout told the USA TODAY Network. "A lot of times when kids declare, they don't play as hard when you see on tape sometime that year. But before, he would make the plays. - The News-Star

After leading LSU to the CFP national championship, winning the Heisman Trophy and setting an NCAA FBS single-season record for touchdown passes, quarterback Joe Burrow is the odds-on favorite to be the first player picked in the 2020 NFL Draft. The 85th NFL Draft is scheduled for April 23-25, with the opening night devoted to the first round. The Cincinnati Bengals hold the first selection. If the Bengals (or a trading partner) make Burrow the first of the 32 opening-round selections, the quarterback would become the 20th former SEC player to be the No. 1 pick. It also would be the 11th time that LSU has provided the first player drafted from the conference. An LSU player hasn't been the first pick from the conference since 2007, when the Oakland Raiders used the No. 1 selection on Tigers quarterback JaMarcus Russell, a former Williamson High School star.

Twelve LSU players have been first-round choices since then, including eight among the top six picks, but none was the first selection from the SEC. The first SEC player picked in the 2019 NFL Draft was Alabama defensive lineman Quinnen Williams, who went to the New York Jets with the third choice. That marked the 13th time that an Alabama player had been the first SEC selection, the most in the conference. If Burrow beats Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa off the draft board on April 23, the 2020 NFL Draft would be the 28th in a row without the same SEC member providing the first player picked in consecutive years. That most recently happened in the 1991 and 1992 drafts, with Tennessee offensive tackle Charles McRae joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at No. 7 in 1991 and Volunteers defensive back Dale Carter joining the Kansas City Chiefs at No. 20 in 1992. - Birmingham News

The NFL is moving forward with optimism that it will have a season this fall. Apparently, the NFL Draft from April 23-25 will take place. The New Orleans Saints are moving their draft war room to the Dixie Beer brewery and are preparing to stay there for the duration. The NFL is a different animal than college athletics, which is taking a different view of its financial future. The bottom line for the NFL is the bottom line. Not saying the league doesn't care about the health of its players and fans, but the NFL has contracts with TV and sponsors that have to be considered, too. The NFL did say it is basing its optimism on expert medical opinions.

It appears the colleges have different medical experts. An extensive survey of FBS athletic directors left a more gloomy picture about future finances. Among the conclusions of Lead1 Association's annual FBS AD survey is the potential for a financial crisis to hit college sports. An overwhelming 86% of ADs believe their universities will require their athletic departments to make "financial sacrifices" because of the crisis. More than one-third of ADs forecast at least a 30% decrease in revenue for the upcoming 2020-21 academic year. That compares to only 8% in that category for the current fiscal year ending June 30. - Northwest Arkansas Times

For months Joe Burrow to the Bengals at the top of the NFL draft has been one of the few things set in stone, even as a coronavirus pandemic undid the best laid plans for a Las Vegas event. But the asset-rich Miami Dolphins remain intent on chipping away at a bit of that, according to report from xxx of the Miami Herald. "The Dolphins, as you have read in this space, will make an attempt at that opportunity at some point," writes Dolphins columnist Armando Salguero, who initially reported the team's interest earlier in the month. "It ... could be in vain because the Cincinnati Bengals are said to highly value the No. 1 pick."

There's been no indication the Bengals, in Burrow's home state of Ohio and in dire need of a quarterback, would move the pick, but if any team could get them to the table, it'd be the Bengals. The Dolphins own three first-round picks, Nos. 5, 18 and 26, and two second-round picks among their nine total picks in top four rounds of the 2020 draft. They also own an extra first- and second-round picks in the 2021 draft, all of which could be worked into a monster deal to move up those four spots to No. 1. The Bengals own all seven of their original picks, but no additional ones in either of those drafts. If Cincinnati did move that pick, it'd join a select number of teams that have done so. The most recent such trade came in 2016 when the then-St. Louis Rams moved up from No. 15 to No. 1 to draft quarterback Jared Goff. - Baton Rouge Advocate

NFL vice president Troy Vincent has sent a letter to several prospects inviting them to participate “live” in the NFL draft in three weeks. The Associated Press on Tuesday obtained the letter sent by the league's football operations chief to prospective early selections in the draft, which will be held remotely on April 23-25 due to the coronavirus pandemic. "We hope that you will start your NFL journey with us as part of the NFL family," Vincent wrote. “At this time, we are working on the plan for draft. As you can imagine, it is a bit of a moving target with all that is going on. "We are contemplating several options that we will be communicating to you once details are confirmed. We want to ensure that you and your family stay safe while we develop the best way to give you a great experience and highlight your accomplishments as you are drafted into the NFL." Vincent asked the players not to publicize the invitation. - AP College Football

  03/30/20 - Lloyd Cushenberry IIIJr/2020, LSU, 6-3, 312 (DS#1 C) + More +

Lloyd Cushenberry's want-to level was displayed before he stepped on LSU's campus. An offensive tackle in high school, he was recruited to play guard or center. Once he signed with the Tigers in February 2016, the work began. "I found some videos on YouTube and basically taught myself to snap," Cushenberry said at the scouting combine. "And then once I got to campus, I actually took one of the footballs from the equipment room and I would just snap to my roommate. I got the rhythm." Cushenberry never lost the rhythm, finishing his LSU career with 28 consecutive starts at center (25-3 record) and a national championship.

Cushenberry declared for the draft a year early and is being mentioned with Temple's Matt Hennessy, Michigan's Cesar Ruiz and Washington's Nick Harris as the top available centers. The Broncos need a center after allowing Connor McGovern to sign with the New York Jets. The Broncos have three third-round picks, which could be the range for Cushenberry. If he is playing right away with veterans like right guard Graham Glasgow and right tackle Ja'Wuan James, Cushenberry said he will be comfortable leading vocally. "I'm not really vocal off the field, but on the field, I'm completely different," he said. "I made a lot of the calls, I was the main communicator and I got used to it. Now I love it. I take pride in it." - Denver Post

Joe Burrow's rapid ascension up the 2020 NFL Draft board is a journey to marvel at. Burrow started his redshirt season at LSU as a mid- to late-round draft prospect. At the conclusion of his record-breaking season, which culminated in a Heisman Trophy and national championship, he became the consensus No.1 pick in April's draft. Everything that I've seen on tape, there's been nothing on there that says he can't make any throw that you're asking him to make," said Brian Callahan, the Bengals offensive coordinator. "I have no reservations about his ability to throw the ball at every spot on the field in the NFL."

Callahan is one of the Bengals staff members who's watched all of Burrow's snaps at LSU. Callahan thinks Burrow, Tagovailoa and Oregon's Justin Herbert will all be NFL starting quarterbacks. All three signal callers are projected to be drafted in the top six. It is Burrow, though, who has the Bengals chomping at the bit. Turn on Burrow's film from his redshirt senior season and it's easy to recognize why teams in the top five of the draft such as the Bengals and Dolphins are so eager to make him their franchise quarterback. The 6-foot-3, 221-pound quarterback possesses NFL-ready attributes. His football IQ, pocket awareness and his ability to throw with accuracy and anticipation are his best traits. Those qualities are essentially why it's inevitable that he'll be a Cincinnati Bengal come April 23. - Democrat and Chronicle

  03/28/20 - Jarrick Bernard-ConverseSr/2023, LSU, 6-1, 197 (DS#32 CB) + More +

Jarrick Bernard quietly walked between the various groups of interview scrums as his Oklahoma State teammates and coaches talked to the media following the first day of spring football practice earlier this month. He stopped and waited his turn. Throughout his first two seasons, that was the norm for Bernard, slipping under the media radar while other Cowboy defensive backs gained more attention. But spring ball was going to be different. And it was going to be important, until the coronavirus pandemic likely wiped out any chance of spring practices beyond the three the Cowboys held prior to March 13.

Bernard didn't stay hidden for long after that first practice, because everyone knows how important spring was going to be for the safety-turned-cornerback who was being asked to fill the void of NFL-bound A.J. Green. "The kid's got over 2,000 snaps of experience," defensive coordinator Jim Knowles said of Bernard. "Now, you move him to corner and he's got such long arms. You want him to compete, and he's got a short memory. He looks good out there. "We're hopeful that he'll take the job." - Daily Oklahoman

The SEC sent a memo to its 14-member football programs Friday, saying that starting Monday they will be allowed to offer film review and instruction to their players via video conferencing for two hours per week. The story was first reported by 247Sports. Schools will continue to be allowed to share strength and conditioning workouts with their players digitally, as many student-athletes who have gone home during the coronavirus outbreak do not have access to workout facilities or gyms. Schools like LSU have been forced to close their facilities except for meal services, housing, medical care and academic support that continue to be allowed to student-athletes as needed. Spring practices and spring games were canceled March 13 across the SEC. Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork recently told the Austin American-Statesman he thinks schools may be allowed to conduct some sort of football mini-camp activities by the NCAA in May, June or July. - Baton Rouge Advocate
