Cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. and kicker Cade York were the lone first-team selections from LSU on the preseason All-Southeastern Conference team announced Friday. Stingley and York were among seven LSU players that made the first, second or third teams in a vote of writers and broadcasters who attended SEC Media Days, which closed out a four-day run Thursday in Hoover, Alabama. In addition to Stingley and York, LSU had three players on the second-team offense and two on the second-team defense.

Landing on the second-team offense were wide receiver Kayshon Boutte, guard Ed Ingram and tackle Austin Deculus. LSU's second-teamers on defense were defensive end Ali Gaye and cornerback Elias Ricks. Also, LSU was picked to finish third in the SEC Western Division behind Alabama, which was chosen to win the league's championship game, and Texas A&M. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  07/26/21 - Austin DeculusrSr/2022, LSU + More +

LSU football right tackle Austin Deculus does not foresee a major endorsement via the new freedom that student-athletes have to make money through their name, image and likeness. "I'm not really expecting any NIL deals," the senior from Mamou said with a laugh at the SEC Media Days. "Guys like Derek Stingley, the pretty boys of the team, they're going to be the faces of NIL. I know the only person who loves my face is my girlfriend. That's about it." Stingley, a junior All-American cornerback for the Tigers, has an agreement with Walk-On's restaurants. Senior quarterback Myles Brennan, who will battle with returning sophomore starter Max Johnson for the starting job when practice begins Aug. 6, has agreements with Smalls Sliders and Smoothie King. Hair care, though, could be a possibility for Deculus, whose locks are long enough to stretch out of his helmet. "My fingers are crossed for hair products," he said. "Or food deals. You know, 'He eats this. You can grow up like him." Deculus is 6-foot-6 and 331 pounds, so how about a "Got milk" ad? "I'm not really expecting many things," he said. "I'll take a few here and there. So, I'll just focus on the season." - Lafayette Daily Advertiser

  07/25/21 - *Kayshon BoutteJr/2023, LSU + More +

LSU sophomore wide receiver Kayshon Boutte was named Thursday to the Biletnikoff Award Watch list, given annually to the nation's top wide receiver. Former Tigers Ja'Marr Chase and Josh Reed won the award in 2019 and 2001, respectively. Boutte, who is expected to be named Friday to the preseason All-SEC team being voted on this week at SEC Football Media Days, had 45 catches for 735 yards and five touchdowns in 2020. Boutte was also named to the Maxwell Award watch list earlier this week, given annually to the nation's most outstanding player. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  07/24/21 - Noah CainrSr/2024, LSU + More +

Running back is regarded as one of the deepest positions on the Penn State roster entering the 2021 season, and that depth is reflected by the watch list for the award that is given annually to the nation's top running back. Three Nittany Lions running backs - junior Noah Cain, sophomore Keyvone Lee and senior John Lovett - were listed among the 2021 Doak Walker Award candidates, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Wednesday morning. Penn State enters the 2021 season with a unique backfield situation. All five running backs - junior Devyn Ford and sophomore Caziah Holmes round out the group - have game experience, and given how the Nittany Lions have dealt with injuries at the position, any of the five could end the season as the team's leading rusher. - Tribune Review

It has been something LSU All-American Derek Stingley Jr. has not been accustomed to hearing. When he signed at LSU in December of 2018 as the consensus No. 1 cornerback in the nation, the Tigers were about to finish the season at 10-3 with a win over Central Florida in the Fiesta Bowl. As a freshman the next season, LSU went 15-0 and won the national championship. Then the Tigers dipped to 5-5 last year. "A lot of people talking bad about us, saying we're not any good and that we're not going anywhere," Stingley said Monday at the SEC Media Days. "I heard a lot of bad things. It was different, especially after my freshman year when everything went right." LSU, which opens the season Sept. 4 against UCLA in Pasadena, California, will try to change that view immediately. "We're coming into this year to prove a point that we at LSU are still in this conversation," Stingley said. "We're still one of the top schools. Everybody has a chip on their shoulder. We're going to be playing with an edge."

LSU coach Ed Orgeron has noticed that approach from Stingley and others. "Something's going on in the locker room," he said. "Something's going on. Our players believe in each other." Individually, Stingley did not have the same season in 2020 he enjoyed in 2019 either. After leading the SEC with six interceptions and finishing second in the nation in passes defended with 21 through 15 starts, Stingley played in only seven games because of injuries and illness in 2020. He missed the opener after being rushed to the hospital the night before the game. Stingley finished 2020 with no interceptions and just five passes defended as opposing quarterbacks found success going away from Stingley. "I know I can play better," he said. "I'm going into this season healthier." - Lafayette Daily Advertiser

  07/22/21 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU + More +

Quarterback Jayden Daniels and the Arizona State Sun Devils figure to rebound from a tumultuous 2020 season that had more to do with extreme circumstances of a pandemic than any individual players' performances. He leads an ASU squad that is expected to be in the heart of the Pac-12 South mix thanks to a defense with almost all of its starters returning and an offense that has proven talent at every position group save for receiver. Even compared to the college football world at large, few teams can line up with the experience of Arizona State's roster. With that, expect Daniels, defensive tackle Jermayne Lole, center Dohnovan West, fifth-year cornerback Chase Lucas and others to pop up on more than a few of college football's many preseason award watch lists for 2021. - Arizona Sports.com

LSU cornerbacks Derek Stingley Jr. and Eli Ricks have been named to the watch list for the 85th annual Chuck Bednarik Award, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday. The award is given annually to the nation's top defensive player. A total of 90 players were named to the watch list. Wide receiver Kayshon Boutte was also named to the Maxwell Award watch list, given annually to the nation's most outstanding player. Stingley, a junior who prepped at The Dunham School and represented LSU Monday here at SEC Media Days, is seeking to join former Tigers cornerback Tommy Casanova (1969-71) as the program's only three-time All-Americans. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  07/19/21 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU + More +

With 20 starters returning, there are lofty expectations in the Arizona State football program this season. So not surprisingly, junior quarterback Jayden Daniels and senior corner Chase Lucas have been named to preseason awards watch lists at their respective positions. Daniels has made the Maxwell Award Watch List for the third time. The returning captain has been the starter since his first game as a freshman and has come up big with games on the line. He is credited with 877 passing yards in the fourth quarter of games in his career, 14th among Power Five quarterbacks since 2019. - Arizona Republic

LSU kicker Cade York and cornerbacks Derek Stingley Jr. and Eli Ricks have been named to the Walter Camp Preseason All-America Team, the organization announced Thursday. Stingley and York were named first-team All-America. Ricks was named second-team. Stingley, a Dunham School graduate, has been a first-team All-America selection after both his freshman and sophomore seasons in Baton Rouge, and, if he is selected again after the 2021 season, he'll join former defensive back Tommy Casanova as LSU's only three-time first-team All-Americans in school history. Stingley enters his junior season with the expectation that he will emerge as one of the top prospects for the upcoming NFL draft. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  05/18/21 - Major BurnsrSr/2025, LSU + More +

Defensive back Major Burns, who played his freshman season at Georgia in 2020, announced Tuesday that he will transfer to LSU. Burns, who played at Madison Prep Academy in Baton Rouge, La., put it quite simply. As a freshman at Georgia, he played in six games and made five tackles. He entered the transfer portal two weeks ago. In high school, he committed to both LSU and Texas A&M before decommitting and ultimately choosing the Bulldogs. He was a four-star prospect and ranked as the No. 13 safety in the country in the 2020 class by the 247Sports composite. - Marietta Daily Journal

Star LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. will wear the coveted No. 7 jersey this season. The university announced the number change Tuesday afternoon in a social media post, which included highlights of the former No. 24 that show why the All-American defensive back will join the long list of star defenders to wear the number. Former LSU quarterback TJ Finley opens up about transfer decision, seeking 'best fit for me' The 6-foot-1, 195-pound junior has lived up to his five-star billing in his two seasons in Baton Rouge. Stingley, a Dunham School graduate, has twice been named first-team All-Southeastern Conference and was named a consensus All-American as a true freshman in 2019, when LSU won its fourth national championship in school history.

Stingley missed three games because of injury and non-coronavirus related sickness as a sophomore in 2020. By that point, some believed it was possible he'd be wearing No. 7 already. Former free safety JaCoby Stevens wore the number last season, and, after departing for the NFL draft, Stingley becomes the most recent star defender to receive the honor. "Derek is very deserving of following in the footsteps of some of the great players in LSU history in wearing the No. 7 jersey," LSU coach Ed Orgeron said in a statement. "Derek is an outstanding young man from right here in Baton Rouge who represents our program with tremendous character and a desire to make all of those around him better." - Baton Rouge Advocate

North Carolina announced defensive back Welton Spottsville has entered the transfer portal. The 5-foot-11 rising junior appeared in 22 games the past two seasons for the Tar Heels with the majority of his playing time spent on special teams. The Heels recruited Spottsville as a receiver out of Havelock (N.C.) High School, where he racked up more than 1,000 receiving yards as a senior and helped lead his team to the 2018 3-A state semifinals. He was rated the No. 32 player in the state by Rivals.com in the Class of 2018. He converted to the secondary before his sophomore season, working mainly as a nickel back. In Carolina's spring game, Spottsville was working behind rising junior Giovanni Biggers on the second unit. The Heels' secondary, if healthy, should be one of the deepest units on the team. - Raleigh News Observer

At 30 years old, 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, LSU's former punter racked up accolades as a four-year starter for the Tigers.
