Ever since Derek Stingley Jr. arrived at LSU, the idea of playing offense and defense has swirled around the All-American cornerback. Stingley has remarkable athleticism that may allow him to play on both sides of the ball, but his family and LSU agreed to wait. Now in his junior year, Stingley may get the chance. Orgeron said LSU was going to give Stingley some offensive reps the day he suffered a "minor injury" that recently kept him out of practice. Stingley should return early next week. When he does, Orgeron said the team will consider trying him on the offensive side. "I talked to (offensive coordinator Jake Peetz) and Derek about the type of plays we're going to run," Orgeron said. "We're going to see where we are next week. I don't know if he's going to be full speed next week. "Obviously, I'm not going to play him both ways if he's not full speed. We have to play that by ear." - Baton Rouge Advocate

Somewhere along the way last season, Jarrick Bernard-Converse earned the nickname "Amazon" from Oklahoma State cornerbacks coach Tim Duffie. Because he always delivers. Bernard-Converse has started 33 consecutive games for Oklahoma State, the longest active streak on the team entering the coming season. And there's not much better a position to have a long-time starter with deep familiarity with the defense than cornerback. "Jarrick, he's just a steady guy," OSU defensive coordinator Jim Knowles said. "He's played every play since I've been here and you can count on him to be that steady influence." And though he isn't naturally a vocal leader, Bernard-Converse finds ways to influence the team with his voice.

"He's not the loudest person," Knowles said. "Jarrick is a really humble guy. But I've seen him try to step up with all these younger guys. We've had an influx of great talent at defensive back in the younger classes and I've seen Jarrick step up. They look up to him. He carries himself and he has a manner of speaking to them that's different than me." For Bernard-Converse, being a leader isn't just about being vocal, but leading in the direction Knowles wants the team to go. "This is year four in the system and the young guys look up to us," Bernard-Converse said. "We're experienced, so Coach Knowles relies on us to make sure we're leading the guys in the right way and the way he wants." - Daily Oklahoman

In the first major poll released so far ahead of the 2021 college football season, LSU was ranked No. 13 in the preseason USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll. Joined by UL, the Tigers were one of two Louisiana teams ranked Tuesday morning. The Ragin' Cajuns debuted at No. 23, marking their first appearance in a preseason poll in team history. The USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll uses 65 head coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision, the highest level of college football. Every coach submits a top-25 weekly throughout the regular season.

Alabama, the defending national champions, opened at No. 1 while Clemson, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Georgia rounded out the top-5. The Southeastern Conference had the most teams from one league with six. LSU returned to the top-25 after falling out of the polls for most of its 5-5 season last year. The Tigers brought back plenty of players who contributed near the end of the season while hiring six new assistant coaches, including both coordinators. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/15/21 - Andre AnthonyrSr/2022, LSU + More +

The prime culprit for LSU's woes was the defenseless defense. The Tigers ranked last of 127 FBS teams in yards allowed passing, 124th in total defense, 98th in points allowed. It's hard to say Anthony didn't do his part, though. He had 24 tackles in 2020, third among LSU's defensive linemen. That total included a team-best 5 1/2 sacks. He also had four quarterback hurries (only fellow end Ali Gaye had more with five), numbers that argue Anthony was the Tigers' most disruptive pass rusher.

If only more of LSU's defensive players could have played like Anthony did. Instead, the defense generally looked and performed like a disjointed mess. Much of the blame centered on the one-year pit stop that was former defensive coordinator Bo Pelini's second tenure at LSU after a successful turn under Miles from 2005-07. But Anthony said the Tigers' problems started long before they stepped on the field and got thrown into a paper shredder by Mississippi State's passing attack to the tune of a Southeastern Conference record 623 yards passing. "Last year with COVID and everything, we didn't really have time to actually bond as a team," Anthony said. "Everyone was going in their separate places, we were quarantining. Guys were at their homes, so we never really got to be around each other but like a week or two for camp." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/11/21 - Nick StorzrSr/2023, LSU + More +

Nick Storz arrived at LSU as a heralded pitching prospect, underwent multiple surgeries that prevented him from launching his baseball career, joined the football team full-time as a tight end and now, he faces another setback in a college career full of them. LSU coach Ed Orgeron said Friday evening Storz has a medical issue that will likely prevent him from playing again.

LSU will continue to gather information before ruling him out, Orgeron said, but Storz wasn't listed on the team's roster and didn't appear at the first preseason practice. "It looks like he's going to be medical," Orgeron said. "We're not sure yet. We're still getting some information. It's unfortunate. I don't know if he'll be able to play football again. We still have a little research to do there. But it looks like that's going to happen." Storz arrived at LSU in 2017 touted as a potential first-round draft pick on the mound. But the right-hander underwent three arm-related surgeries that prevented him from playing much until his third year, when he recorded a 1.04 ERA over 8? innings during the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/07/21 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU + More +

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan broke his left arm Sunday night as he prepared for a fishing trip in Grand Isle during his final week off before preseason practice, his father Owen said Wednesday afternoon during an interview with WWL-FM, 105.3. An avid fisherman during his spare time, Brennan was holding his equipment, and his flip-flop got caught on a loose board, his father said. Brennan tripped and fell on his left arm, unable to brace himself with his hands full.

The fifth-year senior thought he bruised his arm, but the next morning, he realized the injury was more significant. Brennan then drove himself to Baton Rouge, where doctors discovered a compound fracture in the middle of his humerus, Brennan's father said. "He could have been anywhere, anytime, and this accident could have happened," Owen Brennan said. "It was just an absolute freak accident. He was not doing anything that he was not supposed to be doing. Sometimes that's even harder to take." LSU hadn't disclosed how Brennan hurt his arm. The injury required surgery, which Brennan had Tuesday morning. Brennan would have competed with sophomore Max Johnson throughout preseason practice to start the season opener Sept. 4 against UCLA. Coach Ed Orgeron named Johnson the starter after Brennan's injury. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/07/21 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU + More +

After playing just four games last season, Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels is chomping at the bit to show how much improvement he has made. Daniels has high expectations after being placed on the preseason watch lists for several awards, including the Maxwell Award for most outstanding player. He will have to prove he belongs on those lists after playing in limited action a year ago. "Improving body-wise, physically, mentally, taking my game to another level. I feel like I took that big step from last year to this year and today I felt like it showed," Daniels said after the team's first practice.

There is also the complication of mastering the nuances implemented by second-year offensive coordinator Zak Hill. "I mean, you can see just the growth from last year to this year in the offense. It's a little more comfortable to be able to go out there and check the plays and do other things," Daniels said. "It just came through building that relationship with Coach Hill over the spring." Daniels said he and Hill talk daily. "We talk to each other about what I can do better," Daniels said. "He's going to call plays but at the end of the day, it's up to me to make the plays right." - ArizonaSports.com

  08/04/21 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU + More +

And just like that, LSU's quarterback battle became a vigil. The thunderclap news Monday that quarterback Myles Brennan suffered what coach Ed Orgeron ominously referred to as a "severe injury" to his left arm turned the thoughts and expectations about the coming football season on their collective earhole. A 50-50 fencing duel across August between Brennan and Max Johnson to become LSU's starting quarterback? Not happening. A chapter of plays in new offensive coordinator Jake Peetz's playbook, designed to feature Johnson's RPO threat? May have to be edited out or toned down, at least for now. At the moment, LSU's only other scholarship quarterback is the never-taken-a-snap-in-college freshman Garrett Nussmeier.

Hopes of returning to the glory days of 2019 (everyone is hoping for that, one way or another) and a dark-horse run at the College Football Playoff? Could still happen, but now marinating in a gumbo pot of anxiety. But it could just as easily have been Brennan. Beyond an Xs-and-Os standpoint, I expected Brennan would get the nod, all else being equal. The worry that had to gnaw at Orgeron was that if he picked Johnson as his No. 1 QB, Brennan might bolt to another school. Even on the eve of the season. It would have been, for lack of a better term, more politically prudent for Orgeron to pick the senior Brennan and make the sophomore Johnson wait his turn, just as long as he didn't vastly outperform the veteran in camp. Now, Brennan has to wait again. And you have to wonder if his turn at bat will ever come back around. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/02/21 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU + More +

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan, a fifth-year senior competing to regain the starting job he lost to injury a season ago, now needs surgery to repair what coach Ed Orgeron called a severe left arm injury. Brennan's "timeline is yet to be determined," Orgeron said Monday. "Myles has done everything we have asked of him this summer and was in the fight to be the starting quarterback at LSU." Brennan's injury to his non-throwing arm means sophomore Max Johnson, who went 2-0 as a starter late last season, will enter the start of fall camp Friday with the inside track to start LSU's season opener Sept. 4 at UCLA. Orgeron had said he wouldn't announce a starter until the week of the UCLA game, but left little doubt it would be either Brennan or Johnson. Brennan played in just LSU's first three games in 2020, including much of his third game with the abdomen injury that forced him to miss the rest of the season. - AP College Football

By the standards he set in 2019, LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. had an off year in 2020. He missed the season opener against Mississippi State after becoming "acutely ill" the night before the game. He had just 27 tackles and didn't record an interception after picking off six passes in the Tigers' drive to the national championship. There is no question, though, that big things are expected of Stingley going into his junior season. A scan of college football's preseason award watch lists says that Stingley is regarded as one of the best players in the nation.

Stingley made his fifth watch list Friday when he was one of 35 players named to the list for the Walter Camp Award, like the Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award given annually to the nation's most outstanding player. Stingley also made the watch lists for the Bednarik Award (defensive player of the year), the Jim Thorpe Award (best defensive back), the Bronko Nagurski Award (best defensive player) and the Paul Hornung Award (most versatile player). The only award watch list that Stingley was eligible for and didn't make was the one for the Maxwell Award. - Baton Rouge Advocate

After wowing LSU fans with his play at cornerback and as a punt returner the past two seasons, Derek Stingley Jr. may get some snaps at wide receiver this fall. While it remains to be seen, the possibility of catching a few passes would make the talented Stingley perhaps the most versatile player in college football - if the two-time All-American hasn't proven it already. Considering that, it was no surprise that Stingley, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound junior, was one of 57 collegians named to the Paul Hornung Award watch list Thursday.

Presented to the most versatile player in major college football, the award is named for the former Notre Dame and Green Bay Packers legend. A member of the College Football Hall of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame, Hornung played quarterback and halfback and was a kicker during his college and professional career. In 22 career games at LSU, Stingley has recorded 65 total tackles, six interceptions, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. The former Dunham School star also has averaged 11.3 yards per punt return for his two-year career - getting 16.2 yards per attempt in 2020. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Make that three watch lists for Arizona State football standout Jayden Daniels. This time it is the 2021 Walter Camp Player of the Year honor for which Daniels has earned a spot on the so called "watch list." The list includes 35 players up for the award which goes annually to the country's top player. It is the nation's fourth-oldest individual college football accolade. There are 25 offensive players (13 quarterbacks, eight running backs and four receivers/tight ends) on the preseason watch list along with 10 from the defensive side of the ball.

In all, 29 schools and 11 conferences (including independents) are represented on the list with Iowa State having four players on the list. Defending national champion Alabama has two players on the watch list, along with Notre Dame and Clemson. Considered one of the premiere quarterbacks in the nation heading into the 2021 season. Daniels, a native of San Bernardino, California, has already been named to the Maxwell and Davey O'Brien lists. - Arizona Republic

  07/30/21 - *Cade YorkJr/2022, LSU + More +

LSU's Cade York got his kicks in the fog last year at Florida with one of the most memorable field goals in program history. Now he's aiming for one of college football's top individual prizes. York was named Wednesday to the 30-man preseason watch list announced by the Palm Beach (Florida) County Sports Commission. A 6-foot-1, 198-pound junior from McKinney, Texas, York was a Lou Groza semifinalist and second-team All-American in 2020. He made 18 of 21 field goals and all 36 extra-point attempts last season after going 21 of 27 on field goals and 89 of 93 on PATs in 2019.

York had his signature moment against the Gators. After an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Florida's Marco Wilson for throwing LSU tight end Kole Taylor's shoe after a tackle, York came on and drilled a school-record 57-yard field goal through the fog in Gainesville. It proved to be the winning points in the Tigers' stunning 37-34 upset of the then No. 6-ranked Gators. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  07/30/21 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU + More +

Many college athletes have been busy since the name, image and likeness (NIL) ruling went into effect on July 1, including Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels. Daniels signed his second NIL deal with Venezia's Pizzeria on Tuesday as he continues to spread his brand. The deal includes his very own pizza. "The JD5" comes with pepperoni, sausage, bacon, mushrooms and extra cheese, and customers can get an extra large of the specialty pizza for $24.99. The NIL rule allows college athletes to profit off of their brand. Sports360AZ's Brad Cesmat reported that Daniels get a percentage of each pizza sold.

"It's still crazy to think that my name is on a pizza, and I have my own pizza," Daniels said during the Pac-12's media day on Tuesday. "If you're in Tempe, stop by, support, and show love to the pizza." This partnership comes just nine days after signing his first NIL deal with The Solution, an IV nutrition and hydration clinic in California. A player of Daniels' caliber will surely have more opportunities to profit off his name, image and likeness, but he said he won't let them distract him from his first priority - leading the Sun Devils to their first Rose Bowl since 1996. - ArizonaSports.com

A new week brought new watch list honors for LSU's dynamic cornerback duo of Derek Stingley Jr. and Eli Ricks. Monday, the Tiger All-Americans were named to the watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to the nation's top defensive back. Last week, both were named to the watch list for the Bednarik Award, given to the nation's best overall defensive player. Also announced Monday: the watch list for the Butkus Award, given to the top collegiate linebacker. LSU's Damone Clark was the Tigers' entry on that list. Stingley, a 6-1, 195-pound junior from The Dunham School, followed up on his All-American freshman season in 2019 with 27 tackles, five pass deflections, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 2020. - Baton Rouge Advocate
