  09/04/21 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU, 6-3, 210 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels exited Thursday's game against Southern Utah with what the broadcast confirmed as cramps. The Sun Devils led 34-7 with 4:51 remaining in the third quarter when Jayden Daniels fell to the ground. Daniels was 10-of-12 for 132 yards passing before exiting the game. He also added six carries for 40 yards on the ground. He returned to the sideline and appeared to be ok with his helmet on his head but did not return in the game as the Sun Devils held a 27-point lead when he went to the locker room. Daniels was replaced by backup quarterback and redshirt sophomore Trenton Bourguet. Bourguet has attempted two passes in his career prior to Thursday's game, completing one for 24 yards. Bourguet finished by completing 3 of 5 passes for 32 yards. - ArizonaSports.com

  09/03/21 - Avery AtkinsrSr/2022, LSU, 5-11, 212 (DS#22 K) + More +

A tradition born in 2003, synonymous with success both on and off the field, has its newest member on the 2021 LSU football team. LSU place kicker Avery Atkins, who has served as the team's kickoff specialist since 2018, will don the No. 18 jersey for the Tigers during the 2021 campaign. From Auburn, Alabama to home in Baton Rouge. Atkins is the school's all-time leader in kickoffs (270), kickoff yards (16.991) and touchbacks (227). The Auburn, Alabama, native is a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and received his undergraduate degree this May in kinesiology. He will join linebacker Damone Clark in wearing the No. 18. No. 18 at LSU means more than just a number. It's given to the player who displays a selfless attitude and, the program says, epitomizes what being an LSU football player means. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  09/03/21 - Malik NabersJr/2024, LSU, 6-0, 200 (DS#2 WR) + More +

Freshman wide receiver Malik Nabers won't play during LSU's season opener against UCLA this weekend and may miss multiple games, coach Ed Orgeron said. Nabers, who was expected to contribute after impressing throughout preseason camp, hasn't practiced this week because of a shoulder injury, according to a source. "Malik will not be able to play," Orgeron said Wednesday morning on the Southeastern Conference coaches teleconference. "I don't know if Malik will play until a couple games into the season. He's definitely going to be out for UCLA." Nabers broke out during his first preseason, drawing praise from Orgeron and fellow players in the midst of a crowded wide receiver room. The Tigers had eight other receivers vying for playing time alongside Kayshon Boutte. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  09/03/21 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU, 6-3, 210 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Arizona State's defense created turnovers, the offense churned out touchdowns on the ground. Everything else? Still needs some work. Darien Butler had two interceptions and No. 25 Arizona State used its punishing run game to overcome some sloppy moments in a season-opening 41-14 win over Southern Utah on Thursday night. "That's bad football. Bad. I'm a bad coach," Arizona State coach Herm Edwards said. "That's bad football and we've got to fix that. If we're going to win games, games we want to try to win, you can't do that."

The Sun Devils were a bit rusty to start a season of high expectations, committing numerous miscues on special teams and 13 penalties for 135 yards. Arizona State still proved to be too much for the FCS Thunderbirds (0-2), forcing four turnovers and running for six touchdowns to win its 22nd straight home opener. Rachaad White and DeaMonte Trayanum each ran for two scores. "I told them we've got to clean this up," said Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels, who threw for 132 yards before leaving in the third quarter with leg cramps. "We're a better team than Southern Utah, but at the end of the day if we play Washington or USC, those things can hurt us." - AP College Football/Utah Football

  09/02/21 - Joe FoucharSr/2023, LSU, 5-10, 198 (DS#37 SS) + More +

University of Arkansas safety Joe Foucha was voted as a captain along with quarterback KJ Jefferson, offensive tackle Myron Cunningham, linebacker Grant Morgan and safety Jalen Catalon by teammates Friday. Coach Sam Pittman announced the captains after Saturday's short mock game, and Foucha earned a hearty response from his teammates. "This will make my fourth year here," Foucha said Tuesday. "I've been here since 2018, and I've had a lot of ups and downs but I've overcome them. "It was a blessing for my teammates to select me as a captain. I feel like I earned the right for them to, and it just shows how much respect the guys on the team have for me."

Fellow captains Cunningham and Morgan talked up Foucha's role and leadership. "Joe brings a lot to the team," Cunningham said. "He brings energy, excitement. He's always jumping around and talking. He definitely brings that leadership factor. I'm personally very glad he got voted to be a captain this year." Added Morgan, "Whenever Joe first got here, he was wild and always on the ball. He was running around and always finding the ball. We were sitting there saying, "That is the little Honey Badger." "Like that's what I watched growing up was [LSU's] Tyrann Mathieu. So when we saw Joe, a kid from Louisiana, coming up here and getting the ball out of every single play, we were like, "This kid is special. This kid's going to do something good here." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/24/21 - *Derek Stingley Jr.Jr/2022, LSU, 6-0, 188 (DS#2 CB) + More +

LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. remains out with an undisclosed injury, but when asked about the junior All-American's status Wednesday night, coach Ed Orgeron maintained confidence Stingley will play in the season opener against UCLA. "Derek's doing fine," Orgeron said. "I think we're going to lay off of him next week. The week after, he should be fine." Stingley has missed the majority of preseason camp and didn't play in the team's scrimmage last Saturday. Orgeron thought at one point Stingley might return to practice this week, but LSU has kept him out as a precaution. LSU has a little over two weeks before its first game Sept. 4. "I think he's going to be 100% there [against UCLA]," Orgeron said, "and we won't have to worry about re-aggravating it." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/24/21 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 QB) + More +

As LSU quarterback Myles Brennan recovers from a broken left arm, coach Ed Orgeron said he was told Brennan can return "sometime this season," but the exact date hasn't been determined. "I don't want to say nothing prematurely," Orgeron said. "He's just getting over the pain." Brennan tripped and broke his humerus while preparing for a fishing trip five days before LSU opened preseason practice Aug. 6, his father said. Brennan quickly underwent surgery. LSU hasn't released a timeline for his recovery.

Orgeron said Wednesday night the fifth-year senior may start throwing in a month and will wear pads again as soon as possible, but Orgeron doesn't want Brennan to rush his recovery. His arm will have to withstand hits. "I'm not in a hurry," Orgeron said. "I'm not going to rush him. I want him to be ready. I was told he can come back sometime this season, as early as mid-season, as late as the open date (Oct. 30), or Alabama (the week after), somewhere around there. None of that's definite, now." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/24/21 - Joe FoucharSr/2023, LSU, 5-10, 198 (DS#37 SS) + More +

It is not uncommon to see a player make a leap in performance in the second year under a defensive coordinator or in a specific scheme. In the Arkansas secondary, safety Joe Foucha is a prime candidate to do just that. A New Orleans native, Foucha has been a reliable piece in the back end for the Razorbacks the last two seasons, totaling 147 tackles and three interceptions. An uptick in his play would give Arkansas one of the top 1-2 safety punches in the SEC. "Last season I couldn't really lift weights and I felt like that affected me being in the game," Foucha said Thursday after the 12th practice of training camp. "But now that I'm 205 (pounds), my bench press went up, my squat went up, so I feel like that helped me on the practice side to be more physical and get ready for the games. "I'm at my best that I've ever been."

Arkansas second-year defensive coordinator Barry Odom has watched Foucha grow into a more consistent player since this time last year. He has coupled his athletic ability with a greater grasp of the details. Foucha appears to have shaken the shoulder injury that plagued him in the past, too. "He's understanding where he fits in the scheme, how to play, the different variations with how we're calling our coverage concepts in either man or zone," Odom said. "For 12 practices, he has been as consistent and made as many plays as anybody on the field." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/24/21 - Bradyn SwinsonrSr/2025, LSU, 6-4, 255 (DS#15 DE) + More +

Few players in Oregon's front seven are in line for a potential jump in production and playing time as Bradyn Swinson. The second-year freshman edge defender had three tackles last season, but has spent the offseason overwhelmingly with the first-team defense in a variety of roles. "This week at practice (he) was probably the player that took the biggest jump of anybody at any position," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. "That's Bradyn Swinson; he did it the run game setting edges, he did it in the run game taking on double teams, which when you're a freshman and you're an edge player that's one of the most difficult things that you have to do. When you're called upon to do that and you've never done it before, at least not with guys that know what they're doing (and) where they're going, it's very difficult. He did a great job with that. As a pass rusher he continues to progress more and more and more."

The 6-foot-4 Swinson arrived at UO in the spring of 2020 before the pandemic halted practices. He said he weighed around 280 pounds, which he's since cut to 245 (Oregon listed his weight as 269 pounds last fall and 234 now for the same overall drop). "It was a grind but I also want to show appreciation to my teammates and my strength staff because they took time in, they told me if I do this this will be a big step for you," Swinson said. "I really appreciate them for that and I listened and they got me into a better spot to where I'm at now...I feel great out there. I was like, 'Ooh, I can move a little bit more than I used to." - The Oregonian

  08/22/21 - Glen LoganrSr/2022, LSU, 6-3, 298 (DS#38 DT) + More +

LSU senior defensive lineman Glen Logan re-injured his foot this week and will miss an unspecified amount of time as he heals, coach Ed Orgeron said Thursday night. Logan, one of the anchors of LSU's defensive line, suffered "a little break in his foot," Orgeron said. Logan had worn a gold, non-contact jersey during preseason practice. He wasn't present Tuesday, the last time LSU held a viewing period. "It's going to take a little while to heal," Orgeron said. "We'll get him sometime this season." With an extra year of eligibility because of the coronavirus pandemic, Logan returned for his sixth season this year. He has been an integral part of the defensive line since 2018. Logan first played defensive end when LSU used a 3-4 scheme. He has since moved to defensive tackle in the Tigers' 4-3 look. Over the last three years, Logan played in 33 games. He has 100 career tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and six sacks, making him one of the most experienced players on the team. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/22/21 - *Derek Stingley Jr.Jr/2022, LSU, 6-0, 188 (DS#2 CB) + More +

Ever since Derek Stingley Jr. arrived at LSU, the idea of playing offense and defense has swirled around the All-American cornerback. Stingley has remarkable athleticism that may allow him to play on both sides of the ball, but his family and LSU agreed to wait. Now in his junior year, Stingley may get the chance. Orgeron said LSU was going to give Stingley some offensive reps the day he suffered a "minor injury" that recently kept him out of practice. Stingley should return early next week. When he does, Orgeron said the team will consider trying him on the offensive side. "I talked to (offensive coordinator Jake Peetz) and Derek about the type of plays we're going to run," Orgeron said. "We're going to see where we are next week. I don't know if he's going to be full speed next week. "Obviously, I'm not going to play him both ways if he's not full speed. We have to play that by ear." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/17/21 - Jarrick Bernard-ConverseSr/2023, LSU, 6-1, 197 (DS#32 CB) + More +

Somewhere along the way last season, Jarrick Bernard-Converse earned the nickname "Amazon" from Oklahoma State cornerbacks coach Tim Duffie. Because he always delivers. Bernard-Converse has started 33 consecutive games for Oklahoma State, the longest active streak on the team entering the coming season. And there's not much better a position to have a long-time starter with deep familiarity with the defense than cornerback. "Jarrick, he's just a steady guy," OSU defensive coordinator Jim Knowles said. "He's played every play since I've been here and you can count on him to be that steady influence." And though he isn't naturally a vocal leader, Bernard-Converse finds ways to influence the team with his voice.

"He's not the loudest person," Knowles said. "Jarrick is a really humble guy. But I've seen him try to step up with all these younger guys. We've had an influx of great talent at defensive back in the younger classes and I've seen Jarrick step up. They look up to him. He carries himself and he has a manner of speaking to them that's different than me." For Bernard-Converse, being a leader isn't just about being vocal, but leading in the direction Knowles wants the team to go. "This is year four in the system and the young guys look up to us," Bernard-Converse said. "We're experienced, so Coach Knowles relies on us to make sure we're leading the guys in the right way and the way he wants." - Daily Oklahoman

  08/16/21 - *Derek Stingley Jr.Jr/2022, LSU, 6-0, 188 (DS#2 CB) + More +

In the first major poll released so far ahead of the 2021 college football season, LSU was ranked No. 13 in the preseason USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll. Joined by UL, the Tigers were one of two Louisiana teams ranked Tuesday morning. The Ragin' Cajuns debuted at No. 23, marking their first appearance in a preseason poll in team history. The USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll uses 65 head coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision, the highest level of college football. Every coach submits a top-25 weekly throughout the regular season.

Alabama, the defending national champions, opened at No. 1 while Clemson, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Georgia rounded out the top-5. The Southeastern Conference had the most teams from one league with six. LSU returned to the top-25 after falling out of the polls for most of its 5-5 season last year. The Tigers brought back plenty of players who contributed near the end of the season while hiring six new assistant coaches, including both coordinators. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/15/21 - Andre AnthonyrSr/2022, LSU, 6-3, 245 (DS#31 DE) + More +

The prime culprit for LSU's woes was the defenseless defense. The Tigers ranked last of 127 FBS teams in yards allowed passing, 124th in total defense, 98th in points allowed. It's hard to say Anthony didn't do his part, though. He had 24 tackles in 2020, third among LSU's defensive linemen. That total included a team-best 5 1/2 sacks. He also had four quarterback hurries (only fellow end Ali Gaye had more with five), numbers that argue Anthony was the Tigers' most disruptive pass rusher.

If only more of LSU's defensive players could have played like Anthony did. Instead, the defense generally looked and performed like a disjointed mess. Much of the blame centered on the one-year pit stop that was former defensive coordinator Bo Pelini's second tenure at LSU after a successful turn under Miles from 2005-07. But Anthony said the Tigers' problems started long before they stepped on the field and got thrown into a paper shredder by Mississippi State's passing attack to the tune of a Southeastern Conference record 623 yards passing. "Last year with COVID and everything, we didn't really have time to actually bond as a team," Anthony said. "Everyone was going in their separate places, we were quarantining. Guys were at their homes, so we never really got to be around each other but like a week or two for camp." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/11/21 - Nick StorzrSr/2023, LSU, 6-5, 267 (DS#999 TE) + More +

Nick Storz arrived at LSU as a heralded pitching prospect, underwent multiple surgeries that prevented him from launching his baseball career, joined the football team full-time as a tight end and now, he faces another setback in a college career full of them. LSU coach Ed Orgeron said Friday evening Storz has a medical issue that will likely prevent him from playing again.

LSU will continue to gather information before ruling him out, Orgeron said, but Storz wasn't listed on the team's roster and didn't appear at the first preseason practice. "It looks like he's going to be medical," Orgeron said. "We're not sure yet. We're still getting some information. It's unfortunate. I don't know if he'll be able to play football again. We still have a little research to do there. But it looks like that's going to happen." Storz arrived at LSU in 2017 touted as a potential first-round draft pick on the mound. But the right-hander underwent three arm-related surgeries that prevented him from playing much until his third year, when he recorded a 1.04 ERA over 8? innings during the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season. - Baton Rouge Advocate
