  08/16/22 - *Jaquelin RoyJr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 297 (DS#11 DT) + More +

By most accounts out of preseason camp, Jaquelin Roy is poised for a breakout season in 2022. While he's made just one start in 22 career games, he's currently starting at nose tackle on a line that includes end Ali Gaye, big end Maason Smith and stand-up edge rusher BJ Ojulari, a preseason first-team All-Southeastern Conference pick. Despite playing for his third defensive line coach in three seasons, Roy feels more comfortable in a position that will have him playing mostly over the center instead of burly, squatty guards.

Roy added 15 pounds to his frame over the spring and summer to complete the move - which he was "sketchy" about initially, but couldn't be happier about now. "I don't know too many centers that are just going to block me one-on-one," he said. "When I was playing the three-technique (as a tackle), I struggled with taking the inside step before I got out vertically. "I'm in an even stance in the nose, so I can step right in and lift whatever the offensive lineman is doing. I can make a play fast. I can be a disturbance." Roy explained that in lining up over the center, he can use his quickness to cause the player to snap the ball over the quarterback's head, make a bad snap in general or even cause a false start. "That feels real good," he said. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/15/22 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 QB) + More +

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan has decided to end his college football career after five seasons with the Tigers. The 23-year-old Brennan, who announced his decision on Monday, spent his first three years at LSU as a backup. He was named the starter in 2020, only to have that season cut short by an abdominal injury after three starts in which he passed for 1,112 yards and 11 touchdowns. Brennan then missed all of last season because of a non-football arm injury that occurred during a fishing outing at the end of August camp.

The former prized recruit out of St. Stanislaus High School in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, briefly entered the transfer portal last offseason before deciding to return to LSU in hopes of competing for a starting job once more. However, he fell out of the early running for that spot in recent days, behind redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier and Arizona State transfer Jaden Daniels. Brennan appeared in 20 career games for LSU, passing for 1,712 yards and 13 touchdowns. He appeared in eight games as Joe Burrow's backup during the Tigers' 2019, 15-0, national championship season - the winningest campaign in the 128-year history of the program. - AP College Football

  08/15/22 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 QB) + More +

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan is walking away from football, the team confirmed in a statement Monday. The sixth-year senior was set to return this fall after missing all of 2021 with an off-field arm injury. Brennan had entered his name in the transfer portal last year before new coach Brian Kelly convinced him to return to LSU. In last week's scrimmage, Brennan took only second-team snaps while Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels took first-team snaps. Sophomore Garrett Nussmeier missed the scrimmage because of an ankle sprain, but Kelly said he would've taken some first-team snaps. "We are grateful to Myles for everything he has done for LSU Football," Kelly said in a statement. "Myles is a great leader who has made a tremendous impact on this program, and he has earned the respect of everyone here through his commitment and love for LSU." - The Athletic

  08/14/22 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU, 6-3, 210 (DS#2 QB) + More +

As Arizona State manages low expectations from outside the program, it's easy to forget the Sun Devils' place in the larger fabric of college football. The transfer portal took from Tempe more than it gave back, and that could very well have implications in the College Football Playoff for 2022. ESPN's Bill Connelly patched together his list of 25 players who will have the largest impact in the College Football Playoff race, and two former Sun Devils made the cut: LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels and USC Trojans linebacker Eric Gentry. Daniels came in ranked 25th on the list in a tier that Connelly calls "spoiler quarterbacks." The quarterback probably would be higher on the list if Daniels had already locked down the starting nod over returnee Myles Brennan and redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier.

Writes Connelly: Daniels is ungovernable. Among QBs with at least 375 dropbacks last season, his 15.1% rate of scrambles per dropback was comfortably the most, but he's good at it. He averaged 8.9 yards per carry on scrambles and produced a raw QBR of 85.5 when passing from outside the pocket. LSU probably isn't going to contend for the SEC West, but with the Tigers' overall athleticism and Daniels' unique improv skills, they could beat any single team on the schedule. If he wins the job. LSU coach Brian Kelly says QB Jayden Daniels has "not been tapped into". Daniels brings 723 passes of experience and a combined 32-13 touchdown-to-pick ratio, which got tanked by a 10-10 ratio last season. - Arizonasports.com

  08/12/22 - Noah CainrSr/2024, LSU, 5-10, 222 (DS#40 RB) + More +

Noah Cain, the Penn State transfer running back, traveled more than 1,200 miles to get to LSU. He has lived most of his life outside the state of Louisiana. But he never let any other state define him. "When I was in Texas, everybody was like, 'You a Texas kid,' and I'd always stop and correct them like, 'Get it straight: I'm from Louisiana,' " Cain said. To Cain, who moved to Denton, Texas, after Hurricane Katrina, Louisiana was family. It's where he spent every holiday and most of his summers. On his journey, every other stop - Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania - was just a detour on his way back home to play at his dream school: LSU.

His mom, Tonya, doesn't know what it is about this place. She said he probably should give Texas more credit, since he spent 10 years there. But everything about Louisiana ignited a special spark in him and when he was there. He would film his grandparents cooking gumbo, or himself going to an LSU football camp. And after a three-year career at Penn State, Cain saw an opportunity to finally return to his roots. "When he said, 'Coach Frank (Wilson) is at LSU, and I think it will be good for me,' I'm like, 'Well, Noah, you haven't steered us wrong at any age," Tonya said. "None of his decisions have steered him wrong, so we supported him fully." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/11/22 - *BJ OjulariJr/2023, LSU, 6-2, 248 (DS#4 OLB) + More +

LSU junior edge rusher BJ Ojulari was awarded the coveted No. 18 jersey last week for his leadership on the team. The tradition started after the 2003 season when quarterback Matt Mauck led the Tigers to their second national championship. He passed his number on to running back Jacob Hester, who led the Tigers to their 2007 national championship. "All the 18s put us in a group chat and they were congratulating me," Ojulari said. "It was great just for all of them to embrace me and welcome me into that brotherhood." Ojulari said that the most recent No. 18, Damone Clark, was the first to congratulate him. Both Clark and punter Avery Atkins wore the number last season. "Just being a younger guy looking up to him, especially last year, he was outstanding," Ojulari said. Clark led the Southeastern Conference and was No. 2 nationally with 135 tackles last year. Ojulari led the defensive line as a sophomore in both tackles (55) and sacks (7) last year. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/11/22 - Tremond ShortsrSr/2023, LSU, 6-4, 326 (DS#52 OG) + More +

Five days into preseason camp, LSU continued to tinker Monday morning with the offensive line as it tries to find at least four new starters. Near the beginning of a 30-minute viewing period, LSU used a combination of left tackle Will Campbell, left guard Tre'Mond Shorts, center Garrett Dellinger, right guard Miles Frazier and right tackle Anthony Bradford. This was different from the first day of practice, when LSU started out with redshirt junior Charles Turner at center, redshirt junior Kardell Thomas at right guard and senior Cameron Wire at right tackle during a drill with the full offense.

Campbell and Shorts were the only players to appear on the first-team offensive line during two brief open sessions. LSU's other three practices have been closed. "It's in flux," offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock said. "We're still in the identification phase of, 'Who are the best five guys actually going to be?" LSU expected the process to take a couple weeks. Offensive line coach Brad Davis cross-trains players at multiple positions to create more options, and he needs time to properly evaluate everyone with so many openings, especially after multiple potential starters missed spring practice. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/11/22 - Ali GayerSr/2023, LSU, 6-6, 263 (DS#25 DE) + More +

For the first time since 2000, LSU was not ranked in the USA Today sports AFCA football preseason coaches poll. The poll, which uses a panel of 65 head coaches from Football Bowl Subdivision schools, had Alabama ranked No. 1 in the country. The Crimson Tide were followed by Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson and Notre Dame. LSU received votes for the poll, but after going 11-12 over the last two years, the Tigers missed the top 25 ahead of their first season under head coach Brian Kelly. The last time LSU didn't appear on the preseason coaches poll was former head coach Nick Saban's first year. LSU finished 8-4, a quick turnaround after going 3-8 and firing head coach Gerry DiNardo the year before. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/10/22 - *BJ OjulariJr/2023, LSU, 6-2, 248 (DS#4 OLB) + More +

When asked this week whether or not he would continue the No. 18 jersey tradition, Brian Kelly teased an announcement. "We're going to award it to a deserving player," Kelly said. "We're just not going to do that today. But it's coming. Stay tuned." The reveal came Saturday after practice. LSU gave the number, which goes to a high-character leader on the team, to junior edge rusher BJ Ojulari. Ojulari, a preseason All-Southeastern Conference selection, represented the LSU at SEC media days and is expected to have a productive season.

Last year, Ojulari made 55 tackles and 11½ tackles for loss while leading the team with seven sacks. He'll play more out of a two-point stance in new defensive coordinator Matt House's scheme, but he will still primarily rush the passer. "I appreciate all y'all," Ojulari said after receiving the jersey. "All my teammates, training staff, coaches, media personnel. Being able to wear 18 and leave my legacy at LSU is the biggest for me this season." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/10/22 - *Kayshon BoutteJr/2023, LSU, 5-11, 195 (DS#15 WR) + More +

Kayshon Boutte thought about leaving LSU. He really did. When rumors floated around about the possibility in December, the star wide receiver was wondering if he should transfer to another school. It never reached the point where Boutte entered the transfer portal, but consider the circumstances. Everything around him was changing while he recovered from the first major injury of his career. Different coaches. Different teammates. Different staff members. The people who convinced him to pick LSU in the first place were gone. Should he leave, too? "Coming out of high school, I felt like the people who recruited me was the people who had the most trust and belief in me," Boutte said. "I felt like being under a new staff, it was all kind of weird playing for people I never really met. I didn't really know any of them personally. I felt like I didn't fit."

Boutte wanted to know the people around him, and he barely recognized any of the faces in the building. Coming off a season-ending ankle injury in October, his professional future hinged on this junior season. He needed to trust the coaches responsible for developing him. "I thought about it," Boutte said. "I really did. There was a lot going on." Ultimately, Boutte stayed. He got more comfortable with head coach Brian Kelly. He decided he should "overcome this process." And it helped that local personal injury attorney Gordon McKernan signed him to a name, image and likeness deal. On Dec. 29, 2021, Boutte posted on Twitter: "Ignore the rumors...I'm locked in." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/02/22 - Sevyn BanksrSr/2023, LSU, 6-1, 202 (DS#54 CB) + More +

At 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, Banks was a two-year starter at Ohio State, starting in eight games and recording eight pass breakups as a junior. He was a third-team preseason All-American in 2021 and made the Thorpe Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy preseason watch lists. But he arrives at LSU after dealing with injuries. A knee injury hampered him during the preseason and made him miss the first two games in 2021. He sat out the final three contests because of a hip injury. Given the state of LSU's depth chart at cornerback, keeping Banks healthy will be important. Coach Brian Kelly is confident that will be the case. "We got a positive medical report from our doctors," Kelly told reporters in April. - Lafayette Daily Advertiser
