  06/27/22 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Not too long ago, freshman quarterback Walker Howard approached Myles Brennan and said he wanted to tell him something. "What's up?" Brennan asked. "When you were a freshman at LSU," Howard told him, "I was in seventh grade." "I didn't need to know that," Brennan said, laughing. "I know I'm old." That's the running joke with Brennan these days. Once a hyped freshman himself, he stuck around waiting for his chance until he became a sixth-year senior, making him one of the oldest players - and easily the oldest quarterback - on the roster. But aside from something Brennan jokes about with his younger teammates, his age means he doesn't have much time left in his college career.

Brennan stretched his eligibility as far as possible. He has one season left, and the harsh reality of a three-man quarterback race with junior Jayden Daniels and redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier gives him no guarantee he will start this fall. Brennan understands the possibility. He still faces it head-on. Brennan never thought about leaving at the end of spring practice. Instead of finding assurances elsewhere, he stayed to win the job he always wanted. "I'm a fighter," Brennan said Friday at the Manning Passing Academy, where he was a counselor for the first time. "I like to compete. I want it to be hard. I want it to be a challenge. I know I have one year left, but my whole career has played out for this exact moment." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  06/26/22 - Tremond ShortsrSr/2023, LSU, 6-4, 326 (DS#52 OG) + More +

Well before spring practice started, offensive line coach Brad Davis said LSU was "starting from ground zero" on the line of scrimmage. The team had lost four starters from an offensive line that struggled at times last season, and he needed to find a new group. Some answers emerged this spring while other questions lingered until fall practice. As we preview the season ahead, here are five things to know about where the offensive line stands now. Davis noticed signs of complacency when he arrived last summer. He doesn't want to see them again. So even though LSU consistently used the same offensive line near the end of spring practice, competition will stretch into preseason camp, especially as newcomers enter the mix and injured players return to the field.

For the sake of a baseline - this could change - LSU started Will Campbell at left tackle, Tre'Mond Shorts at left guard, Charles Turner at center, Miles Frazier at right guard and Cameron Wire at right tackle in the spring game. LSU added Shorts and Frazier to supplement the offensive line, which lacked experience after the departure of four starters. Shorts stood out on film for his effort, and he started 40 straight games at ETSU. With one year of eligibility, he'll have a good chance to take one of the guard spots. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  06/24/22 - Will CampbellJr/2025, LSU, 6-6, 319 (DS#1 OT) + More +

Brian Kelly hit the transfer portal for LSU as hard as any other coach in the nation, but that won't keep several freshmen from contributing during the 2022 season. LSU is looking to rebound from a 6-7 season, and Kelly knows fans will expect a better mark in his first season. If a freshman wants to get on the field in 2022, he'll have a high standard to meet. Here's a look at five freshmen who are the most likely to make a contribution this season.

Will Campbell, offensive tackle: It's never easy to start in the Southeastern Conference as a freshman, but Campbell left the spring as the top man at left tackle for the Tigers. At 6-foot-6, 317 pounds, he has the size necessary to compete immediately as a true freshman. A strong spring from Campbell convinced the staff to move last year's starting left tackle, Cameron Wire, to right tackle. Considering Campbell was inserted as a freshman starter at Neville High School in Monroe, it shouldn't come as much surprise that he's going to be on the field immediately at LSU. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  06/18/22 - Soni FonuarSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 258 (DS#999 DE) + More +

LSU fifth-year senior defensive end Soni Fonua announced Thursday he entered the NCAA transfer portal. Fonua recorded 6.5 tackles for loss in 2021 and started the last five games of the season. He was not seen during spring practice. Fonua came to LSU as a transfer from Mesa (Ariz.) Community College in 2019. He appeared in 20 games over the next three seasons, primarily as a backup defensive end and special teams player. Last year, Fonua missed the first four games because of academic issues. After he returned, he became a starter when LSU changed its defensive scheme heading into the final month of the regular season. Fonua finished with 27 tackles. Fonua didn't participate in spring practice for undisclosed reasons. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  06/17/22 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU, 6-3, 210 (DS#2 QB) + More +

The quarterback competition will roll into fall camp, but Daniels brings the profile that offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock likes at the position. He's just as capable as a runner as he is as a passer, and he has two years of eligibility remaining. As a three-year starter at Arizona State, Daniels threw for 6,024 yards and 32 touchdowns. On the ground, he compiled 1,288 yards and 16 touchdowns. Garrett Nussmeier and Myles Brennan each have a good shot at earning the starting job, but Daniels provides plenty of experience and talent. He'll have to get past the inconsistency he showed late during his time at Arizona State, throwing for 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2021. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  06/05/22 - Braelin MoorerJr/2027, LSU, 6-2, 300 (DS#999 C) + More +

Virginia Tech's new staff isn't done reshaping the roster going into the 2022 season. The Hokies announced more than a dozen position changes during spring camp and head coach Brent Pry added to that list on Friday. According to Pry, defensive tackle Braelin Moore is moving to the interior of the offensive line. "It's about maximizing guys' potential," Pry said. "Braelin is a damn good prospect. He's got a chance to be a better offensive lineman than defensive lineman." The staff consulted players with positional flexibility after they signed about where they wanted to start out their careers.

The Hokies lacked depth up front on both sides of the ball, and Moore was a successful two-way player at Freedom High School (Pa.). Moore had no issues picking up the defense as an early enrollee, but Pry didn't think he had the top end speed to consistently be a high-end playmaker. "He's never going to run well enough to make enough plays on the perimeter that can be an all-conference," Pry said. "You are always going to want him to run better, but on the offensive line he runs great." - Roanoke Times

  05/24/22 - Maason SmithrSo/2024, LSU, 6-5, 306 (DS#8 DT) + More +

LSU head coach Brian Kelly says defensive lineman Maason Smith is expected to have a large role in the defense. Kelly was recently asked if Smith has the tangibles to become an NFL player. "He's on path," Kelly said. "He's not there yet but he is making progress toward guys that I have had. The Stephon Tuitt's - that is on his second huge contract with the Steelers. Jerry Tillery, second-round draft pick. He has those tools to be a big-time player. I think one of the things that is unique about him is he can pass rush for a big guy and if you can be on the field for all three downs, you start to get into that rarified area. Big future ahead of him. This is a big year and I really think he's going to show himself." Smith played in nine games last season, recording 19 tackles, five tackles for a loss, and four sacks. Now that he will be moving to a full-time starter role, Smith will be able to make a greater impact for LSU. - On3.com

  05/24/22 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 QB) + More +

While multiple players departed the LSU football program following the departure of Ed Orgeron, new head coach Brian Kelly sees players who opted to return that have surprised him. While he didn't commit to a starting quarterback, former starter Myles Brennan has impressed. "I think Myles Brennan...is a guy that has been here a long time, suffered an injury, battled back, had a really good spring game. Each one of the quarterbacks, [Garrett] Nussmeier to obviously, Jayden Daniels and [Walker] Howard, I mean, they all have different skills, and so when we get to camp, we're going to have to really put the offense into what they can do, but Brennan's, another guy that I think did a nice job." - On3.com

  05/20/22 - *Anthony BradfordJr/2023, LSU, 6-4, 332 (DS#7 OG) + More +

The offensive line was one of LSU's biggest concerns heading into spring practice. It needed to replace four starters, and the only returner had never established himself. Every spot was open. The group lacked proven depth. They had to start from scratch. But the line came together over those four weeks of practice, and now head coach Brian Kelly feels "really good" about the position. He recognizes the line still needs to improve, but he didn't express as much concern as he did two months ago.Part of Kelly's optimism comes from the return of Anthony Bradford, who missed the last five games of the 2022 season and spring practice for undisclosed reasons.

Bradford, a 6-foot-5, 365-pound redshirt junior, started five games last fall between right guard and left tackle. "We're pegging him as a tackle, but he could play guard," Kelly said Wednesday night in Metairie at the Tiger Athletic Foundation's final Coaches Caravan stop. "He's got some really good versatility. But we'll see where he is. He's got a really big summer ahead of him. He hasn't been in our offseason program. He's got to stay healthy. When you're off that long, we've got to be careful with him, but I think we'll peg him at tackle." Bradford would likely play right tackle. LSU settled left tackle with true freshman Will Campbell, but the other side remained open as senior Cameron Wire and redshirt sophomore Marcus Dumervil competed for time. Bradford would push them, and his presence creates more depth. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  05/20/22 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU, 6-3, 210 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Scoping SEC QB transfers: Eleven quarterbacks transferred to 10 SEC schools this offseason, with South Carolina's Spencer Rattler the lone guaranteed starter of the entire group. Here are On3.com ratings. No. 4. Jayden Daniels, LSU (from Arizona State). This slotting could look quite foolish if Daniels starts in the opener for the Tigers and looks awesome against Florida State, but I've already planted my flag on another LSU QB island this spring. Daniels is an electric athlete and should have a role in LSU's offense this fall, but Myles Brennan and Garrett Nussmeier both had better springs and offer more consistency in the passing game. Brian Kelly likes running quarterbacks and Daniels did take the initial snaps in the spring scrimmage, so he remains a real factor in a fascinating QB race down in Baton Rouge. - On3.com

  05/18/22 - *Kayshon BoutteJr/2023, LSU, 5-11, 195 (DS#15 WR) + More +

LSU will play its season opener against Florida State this fall in primetime. Kickoff was set for 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC, the network announced Tuesday. The game takes place Sunday, Sept. 4, inside the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The game will be the first for LSU under new coach Brian Kelly as he tries to turn around the program. The Tigers are 11-12 since the last time they played in the Superdome during the 2019 national championship game. Florida State, which opens with Duquesne the week before, doesn't have a winning season since head coach Jimbo Fisher left in 2017. The Seminoles are 19-27 over the last four years. LSU and Florida State haven't played since 1991, when the then-No. 1 Seminoles won 26-17 in Tiger Stadium. LSU is 2-7 all-time against Florida State. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  05/06/22 - *Kayshon BoutteJr/2023, LSU, 5-11, 195 (DS#15 WR) + More +

Kayshon Boutte heads into this season as LSU's most-talented wide receiver. Despite suffering a foot injury that sidelined him for more than half of last season, the junior already has 1,244 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns in his collegiate career. LSU has a history of producing talented wideouts for the NFL - Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase come to mind - and Boutte could easily be the next in line. - Lafayette Daily Advertiser

B.J. Ojulari, a sophomore edge rusher, has 11 sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss in just 23 career games played at LSU. He's been a contributor on LSU's defense since his freshman year and his ability to stay healthy - having not missed a game in two seasons - adds to his value as a potential draft pick. - Lafayette Daily Advertiser
