  06/28/21 - Trevor WilsonrSr/2025, Kansas, 5-10, 195 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Among the six former Buffalo football players who transferred to Kansas this summer, following head coach Lance Leipold, two could become mainstays within the Jayhawks' offense over the course of the next few years. While Leipold also expects the KU offense to immediately benefit from the presence of former UB starting center Mike Novitsky, two younger transfers - receiver Trevor Wilson and offensive tackle Michael Ford Jr. - could potentially play at KU longer. A 5-foot-11, 190-pound wideout from Tallahassee, Fla., Wilson played his debut college season at Buffalo in 2020. Meanwhile, Ford, a 6-3, 285-pound O-lineman from Homewood, Ill., redshirted with the Bulls this past year and will play his first college game this fall.

KU added Wilson to the roster this summer as a sophomore and brought in Ford as a redshirt freshman, so Wilson could play for the Jayhawks for three seasons and Ford may be around for four seasons. Leipold has now known Wilson for more than two years, as the receiver joined Buffalo as a mid-year enrollee in the spring of 2019 before redshirting. In a recent interview with the Journal-World, Leipold described Wilson as "extremely athletic," "extremely talented" and "really developed. - Lawrence Journal World

  06/27/21 - Jeremy WebbrSr/2022, Kansas, 6-3, 201 (DS#130 CB) + More +

A former reserve defensive back at Virginia Tech who most recently started at Missouri State, Jeremy Webb announced Saturday night he's transferring to Kansas. "Let's work," Webb posted to Twitter, along with a graphic that featured the Jayhawks' logo, photos of the cornerback and the word "committed" in all caps. Listed on the Missouri State roster at 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds for his recently completed senior season, Webb entered his name in the NCAA's transfer portal as a graduate transfer in early June. While playing in 10 games in an FCS season that began in the fall of 2020 and wrapped up this spring, Webb recorded three interceptions, was credited with six pass breakups and totaled 38 tackles for the Bears, who were the Missouri Valley Football Conference co-champions.

Webb told Jon Kirby of Jayhawk Slant he also considered transferring to Boston College and SMU before picking Kansas. "Ultimately it just really came down to the coaches and pretty much how they have been recruiting me really hard," Webb told Jayhawk Slant of his thinking, adding what the staff laid out seemed like "the best situation possible and the best fit." Added the veteran cornerback: "I wanted to get in and help change the program around." Originally from East Mims, Fla., Webb's meandering college football career began at the junior college level, at ASA College (N.Y.). In 2018, his first year at Virginia Tech, Webb tore his Achilles tendon during spring practices and redshirted. - Lawrence Journal World

  06/24/21 - Zion DeboserSr/2023, Kansas, 6-2, 248 (DS#105 DE) + More +

Before Lance Leipold and several of his assistant coaches left Buffalo to take on a rebuilding project with Kansas football, a search to replace a third-round NFL draft pick led them to Zion DeBose. As Leipold and his staff got to KU and determined the Jayhawks needed some reinforcements on the defensive line, they circled back to DeBose, a former backup at Virginia Tech who had committed to them at UB as a transfer before the coaching change. Still finishing up his degree at VT this spring when Leipold left for KU, DeBose backed out of going to Buffalo and instead joined the Jayhawks as a summer enrollee and graduate transfer.

Leipold said during a recent interview with the Journal-World that when he and his staff initially came across DeBose, they envisioned the Hokies reserve as a replacement for former UB defensive end Malcolm Koonce, whom the Las Vegas Raiders selected in the third round of this year's draft. They were looking for "another twitchy end" and saw DeBose, listed at 6-foot-1 and 245 pounds, as a solution to their problem. A redshirt junior at Virginia Tech in 2020, DeBose appeared in four games as a reserve D-lineman and made six total tackles and a sack before opting out of the rest of the season, due to the pandemic. "But he showed the twitch and the speed that we needed," Leipold said of DeBose. - Lawrence Journal World

  06/16/21 - Jason BeanrSr/2024, Kansas, 6-2, 196 (DS#20 QB) + More +

The additions of several new players to the Kansas football team are now officially official, as the program updated its published roster this week. With both incoming freshmen and transfers arriving on campus for summer courses and workouts, the Jayhawks' list of players for the 2021 season now looks more complete than it did in the spring. The latest version includes eight new players with varying degrees of college football experience.

As expected, all six of the former Buffalo players who decided to follow head coach Lance Leipold to KU via the transfer portal are now Jayhawks: senior defensive linemen Eddie Wilson and Ronald McGee, junior center Mike Novitsky, junior linebacker Rich Miller, sophomore receiver Trevor Wilson and redshirt freshman offensive lineman Michael Ford Jr. Zion DeBose, a senior defensive end and Virginia Tech graduate transfer who originally planned to play for Leipold at Buffalo, also is on board at KU. So is former North Texas starting quarterback Jason Bean, a junior who was recruited by KU receivers coach Emmett Jones this past spring, while Jones was serving as the Jayhawks' interim head coach. - Lawrence Journal World

  06/03/21 - Jamahl HornerJr/2024, Kansas, 5-10, 186 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Jamahl Horne's days of producing exclusively on special teams for the Kansas football program appear to be a thing of the past. A high-speed kick returner for the Jayhawks each of the past two seasons, Horne showed the type of progress this spring that has KU receivers coach Emmett Jones convinced the 5-foot-10, 186-pound junior is ready to contribute for the offense, too. "I thought Jamahl Horne flashed from a maturity standpoint. He took off. He seemed so confident," Jones said. "The last couple of years, at times you'd see him flash, but he didn't seem quite confident in himself. This spring he just walked around differently." An under the radar recruit out of Miami, Fla., Horne redshirted at KU in 2018 before becoming a factor on kickoff returns in 2019, when he averaged 22.1 yards per return, with a long of 40. Horne followed that up this past fall by averaging 22.6 yards on 15 returns.

Horne long ago began turning heads at KU workouts and practices with his speed. What made his spring displays different this year, Jones related, was how Horne harnessed his specialty and used it to make him a more effective receiver. "He was the fastest guy on the field. He felt like no one could cover him, knew the scheme well and he just took off," Jones said of the transformation that helped Horne stand out during KU's recent offseason practices. "You saw that south Florida athletic ability take off this past spring. So I was impressed with him. You saw everything come together from what he learned being around me the last two years." - Lawrence Journal World

  06/02/21 - Cornell WheelerrSr/2025, Kansas, 6-0, 235 (DS#111 ILB) + More +

Cornell Wheeler, a sophomore linebacker from West Bloomfield, Mich., who didn't play a snap last fall, entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal this week, a team spokesman confirmed to MLive on Wednesday. A reason for Wheeler's decision was not immediately known. He has not addressed the move publicly, nor did he return a message seeking comment. Wheeler was a standout at West Bloomfield High School under Ron Bellamy, who left his job in January to join the Michigan coaching staff. And while Bellamy doesn't preside over the linebackers, he was brought on to help forge a cohesive culture and help bridge the gap between players and staff. Instead, his star inside linebacker in high school appears headed elsewhere. The 6-foot, 231-pound Wheeler took part in Michigan's practice schedule this spring, and figured to be part of a young, inexperienced linebacker group moving forward. - Ann Arbor News

  06/01/21 - Zion DeboserSr/2023, Kansas, 6-2, 248 (DS#105 DE) + More +

Zion DeBose never got a chance to play for Lance Leipold at Buffalo, but the former Virginia Tech defensive end plans to do just that at Kansas. DeBose, a graduate transfer who originally planned to play for the Bulls in 2021, announced Monday evening he won't ever make it to UB. Instead, he is following Leipold and a number of former Buffalo staff members to KU. A redshirt junior this past season with the Hokies, DeBose appeared in four games as a reserve D-lineman. The 6-foot-1, 245-pound veteran from Salisbury, N.C., made six total tackles and recorded a sack before opting out of the rest of the 2020 schedule, due to the pandemic.

Although he has only played in two college seasons - DeBose appeared in all 13 Virginia Tech games in 2018 - this upcoming fall will mark his fifth year on a roster at a Power Five program. Rated a three-star defensive end by Rivals in the Class of 2017, when he signed with the Hokies, DeBose ended up redshirting his first year on campus. After making his way onto the field as a redshirt freshman in 2018, an injury kept him out of the entire 2019 season. - Lawrence Journal World

  05/31/21 - Eddie WilsonrSr/2023, Kansas, 6-3, 306 (DS#165 DT) + More +

The Kansas football program isn't just adding former Buffalo coaches in 2021. A trio of former Bulls players announced Sunday they are following Lance Leipold and several of his assistants to Lawrence via the transfer portal. Eddie Wilson, a defensive tackle who played each of the past three seasons at UB, became the first Buffalo transplant to make known his decision to join the Jayhawks. And before the evening was over, former Buffalo receiver Trevor Wilson and previous Bulls center Mike Novitsky also divulged their plans to do the same.

Listed most recently on the Bulls' roster at 6-foot-4 and 325 pounds, Eddie Wilson started every game at UB in both 2019 and 2020. This past year, he made 21 total tackles and a sack in an abbreviated seven-game season for Buffalo. A third-team All-MAC selection in 2020, Eddie Wilson told Jon Kirby of Jayhawk Slant he wants to help his new teammates and produce. "I'm going to be here for guys on and off the field," Wilson said. "I've been here before and started on the field. I want to lead by example with my actions and I want to help the whole defensive line be dominant. I want them to see how hard I will work. I want to help everyone I can." - Lawrence Journal World

Six University at Buffalo football players have announced their intentions to join former coach Lance Leipold at Kansas. Linebacker Rich Miller Jr., defensive tackle Ronald McGee and offensive lineman Michael Ford Jr. are heading to Lawrence, they announced Monday. All had been in the transfer portal. Defensive tackle Eddie Wilson, wide receiver Trevor Wilson and All-MAC center Mike Novitsky announced their transfers to Kansas on Sunday. Miller was a reserve the past two seasons and played in every game, either on special teams or at linebacker. He had 13 tackles and one tackle for loss last season as a sophomore. McGee, who played at Highland Community College in Kansas, before going to UB, played in 17 games the last two seasons, primarily as a reserve, and made 18 tackles and two sacks. Ford redshirted last season as a freshman and was expected to contend for a starting spot with the Bills. - Buffalo News

  05/20/21 - Kwamie Lassiter IIrSr/2022, Kansas, 5-11, 185 (DS#62 WR) + More +

Lance Leipold's first season leading the Kansas football program will now include back-to-back Friday night dates to open the 2021 campaign. KU announced Thursday that both the home opener versus South Dakota and the Jayhawks' Week 2 road game at Coastal Carolina have been moved up a day, slightly altering the previously released schedule. Leipold's KU debut will come Sept. 3 at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, with a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Jayhawks' third meeting with Coastal Carolina in three years will be on Sept. 10, and air on one of ESPN's networks, with the kickoff time still to be determined. "It's going to be a thrill to open up the season under the lights of Memorial Stadium," Leipold stated in a KU release. "Since I've gotten here, the reception and reaction of our fan base has been nothing short of remarkable. Our fans have shown how eager they are to support this program, and I can't wait for our team to take the field for the first time together on that Friday night against the University of South Dakota." - Lawrence Journal World

  05/12/21 - Trevor WilsonrSr/2025, Kansas, 5-10, 195 (DS#999 WR) + More +

The player who would have been the top returning wide receiver for the University at Buffalo football team has entered the transfer portal. 247Sports and Rivals reported Wednesday that Trevor Wilson entered the portal. Wilson, a redshirt freshman from Tallahassee, Fla., was UB's second-leading receiver in 2020, with 319 yards and three touchdowns on 16 catches. Wilson was expected to take on a bigger role in UB's offense after the graduation of Antonio Nunn, who caught 37 passes for a team-leading 584 yards and two touchdowns last season. The two recruiting sites also reported that linebacker Rich Miller has entered the portal after two seasons at UB. Miller, who is from Detroit, primarily played on special teams as a freshman in 2019, and had 13 tackles in seven games last season. - Buffalo News

  05/06/21 - Mike NovitskyrSr/2024, Kansas, 6-4, 309 (DS#25 C) + More +

The migration from the University at Buffalo football team continues. Three players who were on UB's roster during the 2020 season have entered the transfer portal, according to Rivals.com and 247Sports: defensive tackles Eddie Wilson and Tyrece Woods and center Mike Novitsky. The transfer portal entries follow news that several of UB's football staff members will depart, including linebackers coach/co-defensive coordinator Chris Simpson and defensive coordinator/safeties coach Brian Borland. Multiple sources told The News on Monday that at least four assistant coaches are expected to leave UB for Kansas and join Leipold's staff, either as assistant coaches or in support roles, and Yahoo! Sports reported that as many as seven could join Leipold's staff at Kansas.

Wilson confirmed in a post on social media Tuesday morning that he has entered the transfer portal. Novitsky was UB's starting center the last two seasons, on an offensive line that gave up one sack in seven games in 2020. Novitsky, a 6-foot-5, 295-pound redshirt sophomore from Victor, was a first-team All-MAC selection who helped UB finish second in the country in rushing offense (287.43 yards per game) and fifth in scoring offense (43.4 points per game). - Buffalo News

  04/26/21 - Jacobi LottrJr/2023, Kansas, 6-3, 324 (DS#999 OG) + More +

Although the surge of Kansas football players entering the transfer portal this offseason had died down, the Jayhawks lost another former starter on Friday when offensive lineman Jacobi Lott put his name in the portal, per reports from both 247 Sports and Rivals. Lott, who would have been a junior with the Jayhawks in 2021, came back to the program prior to the start of spring practices after opting out late in the 2020 season. However, the guard from Amarillo, Texas, had a short-lived return. A starter at left guard in each of KU's first seven games this past fall, Lott, listed most recently at 6-foot-4 and 324 pounds, opted out in late November, missing the final two games of the Jayhawks' 0-9 season. - Lawrence Journal World

  04/25/21 - Earl Bostick Jr.rSr/2023, Kansas, 6-6, 309 (DS#15 OT) + More +

Late in the 2020 season Kansas offensive lineman Earl Bostick Jr. moved from right tackle to left tackle. It looks like he's there to stay. That important position, often most responsible for protecting the quarterback's blindside, is where Bostick has settled in during the Jayhawks' spring practices and where the senior from Barnwell, S.C., expects to play this fall. "It's not that different at all. Just switching the feet," Bostick said of playing on the opposite end of the O-line. "That's it. Basically everything play-wise is the same thing, just flipping it around." This past fall, Bostick started at right tackle in five of KU's first seven games. But after the firing of then offensive line coach Luke Meadows, the Jayhawks moved some personnel around and Bostick started the final two games at left tackle.

That's where new O-line coach Lee Grimes has kept Bostick since taking over the position group. "It's just a little weight on my shoulders, but I'm so used to having that," Bostick said of playing left tackle. "Like playing on the right side, I'm still blocking the person in front of me, protecting the quarterback, making sure the running back is getting past me, like getting his block so he can run through his hole like he's supposed to." Bostick said he doesn't mind the added responsibility of making sure the QB doesn't get blindsided by a pass rush or blitz. "I just take it and I run with it," he said of the opportunity to play a position that comes with a brighter spotlight. - Lawrence Journal World
