  12/14/21 - Kalon GervinrSr/2024, Kansas, 5-11, 192 (DS#71 CB) + More +

A former starting cornerback at Michigan State, Kalon Gervin's venture into the transfer portal has landed him at the University of Kansas. Just a little more than six weeks ago, Gervin planned to transfer to Wisconsin and committed to play for the Badgers in 2022. However, Gervin announced Friday he has flipped on that decision, and committed to KU. "Change of plans," Gervin posted to Twitter, along with photos of him wearing a blue, No. 8 KU uniform. Gervin left the Spartans early on this past season, entering the portal in late September. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds on MSU's roster as a redshirt junior in 2021, Gervin played in MSU's first four games. He started twice and made 14 total tackles. The Detroit Free Press reported Gervin's departure coincided with a cutback in his playing time. - Lawrence Journal World

  11/14/21 - Jalon DanielsrSr/2026, Kansas, 6-1, 219 (DS#16 QB) + More +

Everything was going against Kansas late. The momentum. The crowd. The score. Even history. And then first-year Jayhawks coach Lance Leipold decided go for the win and got it. Jalon Daniels hit Jared Casey on a scrambling pass for a 2-point conversion in overtime and Kansas stunned Texas 57-56 Saturday night to snap the Jayhawks' eight game losing streak this season and a 56-game losing streak in Big 12 road contests that stretched back to 2008. "It really says a lot about the young men we have in the locker room," Leipold said. "They've been starving. It's one win. We have to build on it." Leipold knew he had nothing to lose on the conversion attempt. Lose the game? So what? Leipold is trying to rebuild the worst program in the Big 12. But make it and beat Texas - even a struggling Longhorns program now mired in its worst losing streak in more than 60 years - and Kansas (2-8, 1-6 Big 12) could grab college football's attention with a stunner.

It worked to perfection after the Jayhawks nearly let it slip away. Texas had rallied from 21 down in the second half to force overtime on Casey Thompson's touchdown pass to Cade Brewer with 22 seconds left. Texas got the ball first in overtime and scored on Marcus Washington's scoop-and-stretch touchdown catch. But an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty set up Kansas with a short field and the the Jayhawks answered with Devin Neal's 2-yard touchdown run. Leipold never hesitated on the decision to go for the win. Kansas players stormed onto the field when Daniels found Casey trailing the scrambling quarterback across the middle of the field and the fullback cradled the throw for the score. "I didn't actually see the catch...But I saw everybody running toward them, so I made my way toward them too and jumped into the dogpile," Neal said. "It was just truly remarkable." - Kansas/AP College Football

  09/03/21 - Lawrence ArnoldrSr/2025, Kansas, 6-3, 205 (DS#77 WR) + More +

Wins have been so rare at Kansas over the last decade-plus that it wasn't too surprising when students spilled from the stands and rushed the field to celebrate Lance Leipold's first victory as head coach of the Jayhawks. Who cares if it came against lower-level South Dakota? It wasn't easy, either. Jason Bean connected with Lawrence Arnold for their second touchdown of the game, giving the Jayhawks the lead back with 1:12 remaining Friday night, and their rebuilt defense held the Coyotes on downs to preserve a nervy 17-14 victory that brought an end to a 13-game skid dating to Oct. 26, 2019. "Right now we're not going to get concerned about style points and things like that. We needed to get a win," Leipold said. "Getting a victory was first and foremost right now and as I said, then we go to the film and work to get better." The Coyotes, who trailed 10-0 late in the third quarter, had pulled ahead when Kansas native Travis Theis ran 25 yards for a score with 5:16 to go. But the Jayhawks answered by driving 64 yards in less than four minutes, converting fourth-and-10 along the way and getting some help from a targeting penalty on South Dakota freshman Myles Harden. Then the touchdown pass to Arnold that set off the wild celebration. - Kansas/AP College Football

  08/22/21 - Alonso PersonrSo/2025, Kansas, 6-3, 210 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

A University of Kansas football player was arrested Thursday on suspicion of domestic battery and kidnapping, according to Douglas County Jail booking logs. Alonso Person, who is a linebacker on the team, is being held without bond, according to the booking logs. Head football coach Lance Leipold said in a statement Friday evening that Person has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities. "Any allegations of this magnitude are not taken lightly, and we will continue to gather the facts to determine the next appropriate steps," Leipold said in the release. Further details about the allegations against Person were not immediately available on Friday evening. - Lawrence Journal World

  08/18/21 - D.J. Graham IIrSr/2026, Kansas, 6-0, 198 (DS#134 CB) + More +

D.J. Graham didn't make it a secret. When the four-star recruit committed to Oklahoma in February 2019, he did so with the intention of being a wide receiver. It's a position he thrived in at Central High School in Fort Worth, Texas, piling up offers from Georgia, LSU and other notable programs as a result. But defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and cornerbacks coach Roy Manning saw the potential for Graham to thrive as a cornerback, even though he wasn't fully on board at first. "I had wide receiver aspirations," Graham said. "I wanted to come to OU, play under Lincoln Riley and play wide receiver. (Switching) was tough, a little bit. You could tell that I really still wanted to play receiver." Graham trusted his coaches, though, and it paid off on the field last season.

The most rewarding moment came on Dec. 5, 2020, when the then-freshman cornerback made the first interception of his career in a 27-14 win over Baylor. "When I got that (interception), that really boosted my confidence like out the roof," Graham said. "I walked into the locker room thinking like I was just on top of the world for a little bit... I can say now that I'm completely bought in." Graham finished last season with 21 total tackles across eight game appearances, and he's expected to have a larger role with the team this time around. With so much experience on the other side of the ball, the now-sophomore cornerback is already causing problems for OU's wide receivers during fall camp. "D.J. is a matchup nightmare for some of these receivers," junior wide receiver Theo Wease said. "He used to play receiver, so he definitely knows some of our tricks... I'm definitely one of his biggest fans." - Daily Oklahoman

  08/16/21 - Devin NealSr/2025, Kansas, 5-11, 213 (DS#14 RB) + More +

Kansas football head coach sure is glad to have the former Lawrence High star running back on board. At 5-foot-11 and 210 pounds, Neal didn't look like a typical incoming freshman skill player when he joined the roster this summer. But Neal's physicality and stature, Leipold said, are just a portion of what has helped the young back make a good first impression. "To see him and his maturity, the thing I love about the young man is his personality, his character and what he's all about," Leipold said of Neal. Even before preseason camp began for the Jayhawks this past week, Leipold said he learned that Neal was the type of player who on a daily basis takes care of his body, studies pertinent video clips and more. "He's asking questions," Leipold said of another aspect of Neal's approach that was a good sign. "He has definitely got the makeup not just in stature, speed, those things, but in how to go about it - as we like to say, to be a pro." Before Neal became KU's top-rated recruit from the Class of 2021 to join the program, he ran for 1,370 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior at Lawrence High. - Lawrence Journal World

  08/15/21 - Garrett JonesSo/2024, Kansas, 6-2, 307 (DS#999 C) + More +

A fill-in starter for the Kansas football team's offensive line a year ago, Garrett Jones announced Sunday he won't be playing football "for awhile." A KU spokesperson confirmed to the Journal-World that Jones is no longer with the program. A redshirt freshman from Berrien Springs, Mich., Jones opened preseason camp with the Jayhawks this past week before his plans changed. The 6-foot-2, 295-pound center posted to Twitter that "due to personal issues and family reasons I have to step away from football for awhile." In a direct message to the Journal-World, Jones said he is "forever a Jayhawk," and that his "love for the coaches, the program and my brothers will never change." Asked whether he wanted to reveal anything more about what led him to leave the program, Jones responded: "I just need to be there for family right now, because family is always first and due to that I unfortunately have to step away from football for some time." - Lawrence Journal World
