  05/31/21 - Eddie WilsonrSr/2023, Kansas, 6-3, 306 (DS#165 DT) + More +

The Kansas football program isn't just adding former Buffalo coaches in 2021. A trio of former Bulls players announced Sunday they are following Lance Leipold and several of his assistants to Lawrence via the transfer portal. Eddie Wilson, a defensive tackle who played each of the past three seasons at UB, became the first Buffalo transplant to make known his decision to join the Jayhawks. And before the evening was over, former Buffalo receiver Trevor Wilson and previous Bulls center Mike Novitsky also divulged their plans to do the same.

Listed most recently on the Bulls' roster at 6-foot-4 and 325 pounds, Eddie Wilson started every game at UB in both 2019 and 2020. This past year, he made 21 total tackles and a sack in an abbreviated seven-game season for Buffalo. A third-team All-MAC selection in 2020, Eddie Wilson told Jon Kirby of Jayhawk Slant he wants to help his new teammates and produce. "I'm going to be here for guys on and off the field," Wilson said. "I've been here before and started on the field. I want to lead by example with my actions and I want to help the whole defensive line be dominant. I want them to see how hard I will work. I want to help everyone I can." - Lawrence Journal World

  05/31/21 - Ronald McGeerSr/2025, Kansas, 6-2, 285 (DS#999 DT) + More +

Six University at Buffalo football players have announced their intentions to join former coach Lance Leipold at Kansas. Linebacker Rich Miller Jr., defensive tackle Ronald McGee and offensive lineman Michael Ford Jr. are heading to Lawrence, they announced Monday. All had been in the transfer portal. Defensive tackle Eddie Wilson, wide receiver Trevor Wilson and All-MAC center Mike Novitsky announced their transfers to Kansas on Sunday. Miller was a reserve the past two seasons and played in every game, either on special teams or at linebacker. He had 13 tackles and one tackle for loss last season as a sophomore. McGee, who played at Highland Community College in Kansas, before going to UB, played in 17 games the last two seasons, primarily as a reserve, and made 18 tackles and two sacks. Ford redshirted last season as a freshman and was expected to contend for a starting spot with the Bills. - Buffalo News

  05/20/21 - Kwamie Lassiter IIrSr/2022, Kansas, 5-11, 185 (DS#62 WR) + More +

Lance Leipold's first season leading the Kansas football program will now include back-to-back Friday night dates to open the 2021 campaign. KU announced Thursday that both the home opener versus South Dakota and the Jayhawks' Week 2 road game at Coastal Carolina have been moved up a day, slightly altering the previously released schedule. Leipold's KU debut will come Sept. 3 at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, with a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Jayhawks' third meeting with Coastal Carolina in three years will be on Sept. 10, and air on one of ESPN's networks, with the kickoff time still to be determined. "It's going to be a thrill to open up the season under the lights of Memorial Stadium," Leipold stated in a KU release. "Since I've gotten here, the reception and reaction of our fan base has been nothing short of remarkable. Our fans have shown how eager they are to support this program, and I can't wait for our team to take the field for the first time together on that Friday night against the University of South Dakota." - Lawrence Journal World

Rivals.com reported Monday that Ron McGee, a defensive lineman, and Anthony Laudicina, an offensive lineman, have both entered the transfer portal. McGee, a defensive tackle transferred to UB from Highland (Kan.) Community College prior to the 2019 season. McGee had 18 tackles and two sacks in 17 games in two seasons at UB.   05/12/21 - Trevor WilsonrSr/2025, Kansas, 5-10, 195 (DS#999 WR) + More +

The player who would have been the top returning wide receiver for the University at Buffalo football team has entered the transfer portal. 247Sports and Rivals reported Wednesday that Trevor Wilson entered the portal. Wilson, a redshirt freshman from Tallahassee, Fla., was UB's second-leading receiver in 2020, with 319 yards and three touchdowns on 16 catches. Wilson was expected to take on a bigger role in UB's offense after the graduation of Antonio Nunn, who caught 37 passes for a team-leading 584 yards and two touchdowns last season. The two recruiting sites also reported that linebacker Rich Miller has entered the portal after two seasons at UB. Miller, who is from Detroit, primarily played on special teams as a freshman in 2019, and had 13 tackles in seven games last season. - Buffalo News

  05/06/21 - Mike NovitskyrSr/2024, Kansas, 6-4, 309 (DS#25 C) + More +

The migration from the University at Buffalo football team continues. Three players who were on UB's roster during the 2020 season have entered the transfer portal, according to Rivals.com and 247Sports: defensive tackles Eddie Wilson and Tyrece Woods and center Mike Novitsky. The transfer portal entries follow news that several of UB's football staff members will depart, including linebackers coach/co-defensive coordinator Chris Simpson and defensive coordinator/safeties coach Brian Borland. Multiple sources told The News on Monday that at least four assistant coaches are expected to leave UB for Kansas and join Leipold's staff, either as assistant coaches or in support roles, and Yahoo! Sports reported that as many as seven could join Leipold's staff at Kansas.

Wilson confirmed in a post on social media Tuesday morning that he has entered the transfer portal. Novitsky was UB's starting center the last two seasons, on an offensive line that gave up one sack in seven games in 2020. Novitsky, a 6-foot-5, 295-pound redshirt sophomore from Victor, was a first-team All-MAC selection who helped UB finish second in the country in rushing offense (287.43 yards per game) and fifth in scoring offense (43.4 points per game). - Buffalo News

  04/26/21 - Jacobi LottrJr/2023, Kansas, 6-3, 324 (DS#999 OG) + More +

Although the surge of Kansas football players entering the transfer portal this offseason had died down, the Jayhawks lost another former starter on Friday when offensive lineman Jacobi Lott put his name in the portal, per reports from both 247 Sports and Rivals. Lott, who would have been a junior with the Jayhawks in 2021, came back to the program prior to the start of spring practices after opting out late in the 2020 season. However, the guard from Amarillo, Texas, had a short-lived return. A starter at left guard in each of KU's first seven games this past fall, Lott, listed most recently at 6-foot-4 and 324 pounds, opted out in late November, missing the final two games of the Jayhawks' 0-9 season. - Lawrence Journal World

  04/25/21 - Earl Bostick Jr.rSr/2023, Kansas, 6-6, 309 (DS#15 OT) + More +

Late in the 2020 season Kansas offensive lineman Earl Bostick Jr. moved from right tackle to left tackle. It looks like he's there to stay. That important position, often most responsible for protecting the quarterback's blindside, is where Bostick has settled in during the Jayhawks' spring practices and where the senior from Barnwell, S.C., expects to play this fall. "It's not that different at all. Just switching the feet," Bostick said of playing on the opposite end of the O-line. "That's it. Basically everything play-wise is the same thing, just flipping it around." This past fall, Bostick started at right tackle in five of KU's first seven games. But after the firing of then offensive line coach Luke Meadows, the Jayhawks moved some personnel around and Bostick started the final two games at left tackle.

That's where new O-line coach Lee Grimes has kept Bostick since taking over the position group. "It's just a little weight on my shoulders, but I'm so used to having that," Bostick said of playing left tackle. "Like playing on the right side, I'm still blocking the person in front of me, protecting the quarterback, making sure the running back is getting past me, like getting his block so he can run through his hole like he's supposed to." Bostick said he doesn't mind the added responsibility of making sure the QB doesn't get blindsided by a pass rush or blitz. "I just take it and I run with it," he said of the opportunity to play a position that comes with a brighter spotlight. - Lawrence Journal World

  04/23/21 - Daniel Hishaw Jr.rSr/2026, Kansas, 5-10, 209 (DS#37 RB) + More +

The powerful legs and arms that made Daniel Hishaw Jr. an effective rusher as a true freshman this past fall continue to earn the Kansas running back acclaim within the program this spring. "He's just like a bowling ball in the backfield," senior offensive lineman Earl Bostick Jr. said of what Hishaw is doing during the Jayhawks' practices lately. A sophomore back from Moore, Okla., Hishaw appreciated the comparison. "I mean a bowling ball knocks down pins, and that's what I'm gonna do," Hishaw said of his approach as a ball carrier. "So if that's how you're going to describe it, you look at it that way, I'll take that."

One of the many freshmen who emerged as promising prospects for KU football in 2020, Hishaw played in eight games, started in three and produced 229 rushing yards on 52 carries (4.4 yards per attempt) in his first season of college football. His most productive outings came late in the season, after Pooka Williams Jr. opted out and Velton Gardner suffered an injury. In two of his starts, Hishaw rushed for 73 yards at Oklahoma and later finished the year with 87 rushing yards and a touchdown at Texas Tech. - Lawrence Journal World

The Kansas football defense could end up relying a lot on a pair of relatively new inside linebackers this year. Between former safety Nate Betts switching positions during the offseason and Taiwan Berryhill moving inside late during his freshman year, the Jayhawks hope those two can bolster a group that also includes junior Gavin Potter, junior Nick Channel, senior Jay Dineen and redshirt freshman Krishawn Brown. "We're coming along," Berryhill, a sophomore from New Orleans, said of the group's progress this spring, adding it helped that the players came in well conditioned. "We're starting to get used to the defense, getting more comfortable. Every day we're getting better, day by day."

As a true freshman in 2020, Berryhill didn't play at all during KU's first four games. But as the linebacking corps became depleted, the Jayhawks needed him late in the season, so much so that he ended up starting in the finale at Texas Tech. He was still new to playing inside linebacker at the college level - and adjusting on the fly - at that point. But Berryhill told reporters this week that he feels much more confident in his role now, a few weeks into spring practices. "I've grown as a linebacker," Berryhill said. - Lawrence Journal World

  04/13/21 - Jalon DanielsrSr/2026, Kansas, 6-1, 219 (DS#16 QB) + More +

In the early stages of what very well could be a lengthy quarterback competition for the Kansas football team in 2021, a number of contenders are getting their chances to make their case for the job. Sophomore Jalon Daniels, who started in six of nine games for the Jayhawks in 2020, said following the team's fourth spring practice that he and other QBs are rotating in and out to get reps, and working with a variety of teammates in the process. "We're all switching," Daniels, the first QB to speak with the media this spring, told reporters on Thursday night. "Every single day at practice, switching ones, with the twos, with the threes," he added, referencing the first, second and third team groupings. Interim head coach Emmett Jones, who last was made available for a media session on March 30, following spring practice No. 1, described the team's QB situation as "an all-out race" with "seven guys out there competing." The three names that have been brought up by players most often so far during interviews this spring are Daniels and seniors Miles Kendrick and Miles Fallin. True freshmen Conrad Hawley and Ben Easters also arrived at KU early this spring, each hoping to work his way up the depth chart. - Lawrence Journal World

  04/05/21 - Colin GrunhardrSr/2023, Kansas, 6-0, 290 (DS#999 OG) + More +

KU junior center Colin Grunhard, who just joined the Jayhawks as a graduate transfer from Notre Dame this semester, provided an update on the Jayhawks' offenses after practice No. 2. He described the system being put into place by new coordinator Mike DeBord as "a great scheme." "We've only gone through our first three installs," Grunhard shared. "It's a great offense, very similar to what I'm used to - it's a pro style offense." Without giving away too many details, Grunhard said KU's quarterbacks can "make some great reads" in the offense, which also sets up offensive linemen to execute double team blocks. "It's a lot of fun to play in," Grunhard attested. Additionally, the veteran O-lineman said KU's new O-line coach, Lee Grimes, is introducing techniques that fit in with DeBord's system. "It's been all good so far," Grunhard said. "We're just ready to put some pads on." - Lawrence Journal World

  03/27/21 - Jason BeanrSr/2024, Kansas, 6-2, 196 (DS#20 QB) + More +

The Kansas football team's quarterback competition has a new contender. A former starting QB at North Texas, Jason Bean announced Friday his plans to transfer to KU and join the Jayhawks. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 189 pounds on the Mean Green's roster in 2020, Bean started in seven of the team's 10 games as a redshirt sophomore before deciding to move on from the Conference USA program. Bean was involved with a QB competition at North Texas throughout much of what would be his final season with the team. He finished with a 54.5% completion percentage, and threw for 1,131 and 14 touchdowns in eight appearances in 2020. Bean went 79-for-145 through the air, with five interceptions. Known for his speed, Bean gave UNT a rushing element as a QB, too, and averaged 6.2 yards per carry, while running for five touchdowns this past season. - Lawrence Journal World

  03/07/21 - *Pooka Williams Jr.Jr/2021, Kansas, 5-10, 170 (DS#20 RB) + More +

Back in Lawrence to show off his speed, footwork and more, former Jayhawks running back Pooka Williams returned to the Kansas football spotlight on Friday, more than four months after he opted out the 2020 season. Williams clocked a 4.38 40-yard dash at KU's pro day, displaying some of the velocity that helped him stand out during his 26 career games with the Jayhawks. "I was happy about the whole thing really," Williams told reporters on a video call following the closed event. "Just performed well, and was being myself for real."

One of KU's most talented skill players in recent memory, Williams, a preseason All-Big 12 running back in 2020, announced four games into the 10-game schedule he would opt out of the season. Speaking with media members for the first time since then, Williams, who announced in December his plans to turn pro and leave KU, said he didn't think his time away from practicing and playing in games from mid-October through early December would hurt him heading into this year's NFL Draft. "Nah. If it does hurt me, once I get in there I'll just prove myself again," Williams declared. - Lawrence Journal World

  03/03/21 - *Pooka Williams Jr.Jr/2021, Kansas, 5-10, 170 (DS#20 RB) + More +

Former Kansas football star running back Pooka Williams will be back in Lawrence this week, hoping to prove himself as an NFL prospect at the Jayhawks' pro day on Friday. Due to the pandemic, there won't be an NFL Scouting Combine in 2021, making the pro days hosted by individual college football programs all the more important for the players trying to make it to the next level. The NFL still extended invitations to players for a virtual version of the combine this year, though, and Williams received one, KU announced on Tuesday. Williams, a four-star high school prospect when he signed with KU as a touted recruit from Louisiana, figures to be a player of interest for NFL teams, whose scouts and coaches will be able to access video footage and results from KU's pro day drills. - Lawrence Journal World
