If any Iowa State football player has grown more than the Florida native, please provide examples. Between his freshman and sophomore seasons, Iowa State coach Matt Campbell even said "it looked like he had a tire under his tummy. Now, he looks like a statue of what a defensive end should look like - the tire's gone." Campbell relayed that at last year's Big 12 Media Days - and Bailey didn't disagree with that assessment. "I was probably 20 pounds overweight," he said, shaking his head in bewilderment that he'd even let his body go that way. "I didn't take my nutrition seriously until after my freshman year." Bailey starts the season with 18 1/2 sacks - the same way he started the last time he prepared for a season-opening game. He played all right against Northern Iowa, Iowa and Lousiana-Monroe.

He went down in the conference opener at Baylor - his 37th career start in a row. And now he's back, full throttle and ready to finally own that record outright. "He's come back in the best shape I've seen him in; he's in the best shape of his life," Campbell said last week. "He worked tremendously hard over the last three months while he was at home in Jacksonville." He's added muscle and structure to his 6-foot-2, 261-pound frame. He's got a fresh outlook after missing the last nine games of 2019 and the 2020 spring. He's way removed and far more mature than the JaQuan Bailey who made a boneheaded play against Texas when he was a sophomore. "I will never, ever forget that play," Bailey told me last season. "A lot has happened since then. I'm a totally a different person. I'm a totally a different player." - Des Moines Register

A native of Gilbert, Ariz., Purdy is coming off a 2019 season where he shattered virtually every season passing mark in program history, including passing yardage (3,982), total offense (4,231), passing touchdowns (27), touchdowns responsible (35) and completions (312). Purdy led the Big 12 and ranked fourth nationally in passing yardage (306.3) in 2019. He also ranked fifth in the nation in total offense (325.5). A native of Norman, Okla., Kolar was one of eight semifinalists for the award in 2019. He led all Big 12 tight ends in receptions (51), receiving yards (697) and receiving touchdowns (7). His 697 receiving yards broke ISU's season record for tight ends and ranked sixth nationally among FBS tight ends.   07/15/20 - Dimitri StanleyrSr/2024, Iowa State, 5-11, 188 (DS#125 WR) + More +

During the last two seasons, Dimitri Stanley has laid a foundation by gaining some experience in college football. Now, the Colorado receiver is hoping to build upon that and become a better player. Although the coronavirus pandemic has created some uncertainty about whether there will be a college football season this fall, Stanley has spent his offseason improving his craft. "I've just been preparing myself as much as possible," said Stanley, a redshirt sophomore from Cherry Creek High School. "I've just been in the weight room, been conditioning, been on the field doing footwork and getting catches in."

In 2018, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound Stanley took advantage of the NCAA's new redshirt rule to play in three games and maintain his redshirt. He started two of those games, catching six passes for 43 yards. Last year, he played in all 12 games, including eight as a starter in the slot, finishing fourth on the team in receptions (29) and receiving yards (312), while hauling in two touchdowns. With 15 games under his belt, Stanley said, "I've just learned how much faster the game is; what kind of pace that I have to play and the standard that I have to hold myself to. Being able to be accountable and have my teammates relying on me to make those big plays." - Daily Camera

Recognizing the global COVID-19 pandemic continues to present significant challenges to our campuses and communities, the Patriot League Council of Presidents announces the following decisions regarding Patriot League competition. Patriot League teams will not engage in competition in the fall season (championship and non-championship)...Decisions surrounding winter and spring sport competition will be made at a later date; and...The opportunity for conditioning, strength training and other practice opportunities in all sports will be permitted provided health and safety conditions support such activities. Because the United States Military Academy and the United States Naval Academy are unique in their environments and their missions within higher education, the Council of Presidents agree that the academies may continue to engage in competitive opportunities as considered appropriate by their respective Superintendents. - The Patriot League

In essentially just eight games last season, Hall rushed for 897 yards on 186 carries. Breaking that down, the true freshman averaged 21.0 yards in the first four games, and 101.6 yards during the final eight. Now that he's figured out college life and big-time football, he'll get a full dose of whatever the schedule permits. The acclimation process of being a true freshman is over. "Breece is maybe one of the most gifted, true running backs that I've had the opportunity to be around," coach Matt Campbell said last week. "He's got very similar qualities, as far as skills, to David Montgomery and Kareem Hunt."

Montgomery, who dazzled ISU fans with 2,925 yards during three seasons between 2016-18, is the starter for the Chicago Bears. Hunt, who Campbell coached at Toledo, plays for the Cleveland Browns. "What allowed Breece to take a step forward was maturity," Campbell said. "It's hard as a true freshman to step on campus and know what the expectations and standards to live by day-in and day-out are. "As he matured through the season with those expectations, that God-given ability he had really started to show through. "He made a huge impact the second half of the season. He's got a bright future." - Ames Tribune

  07/09/20 - Brock PurdySr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Brock Purdy would wake up every morning, gather with his father and brother and open up the Bible. After two seasons of the intense competition, scrutiny and physical demands of being Iowa State's quarterback, Purdy realized that the pressures had built inside him to a level that was not helpful, and now, when a Florida spring break vacation became a COVID-19 pandemic exile from his home and campus, Purdy set about finding both a reset and a perspective to help bear that burden in the future. So he turned to his faith and his family, pondering questions bigger than how to read a disguised coverage or the best way to dissect a defense.

"I'm a man of faith, so my father, my brother and I every single morning would just read the Word, talk about our faith, understand what our purpose is here in life," Purdy said during a teleconference on Thursday. "Especially with everything going on, for me to be able to step back and understand life's not all about football and sports." Purdy came to Ames as a well-regarded recruit but was third on the depth chart in 2019 before injury and ineffectiveness at the quarterback position put him on the field against Oklahoma State that October. Since then, he's thrown for 5,695 yards and 43 touchdowns while completing 66.3 percent of his passes and throwing just 14 interceptions to become a Heisman Trophy contender and first-round NFL draft prospect. - Des Moines Register

The plan is now officially for Jack Trice Stadium to be half as full as it usually is during home football games. That much talked-about possibility became the current reality Wednesday, when the university posted campus-wide mitigation principles for the 2020-21 school year on its website. "As guided by the Governor, the CDC, Iowa Department of Public Health and other state and federal health experts, the current plan is for a 50-percent capacity limit for events at Jack Trice Stadium, including football," the message states, regarding the 61,500-seat stadium. "Additional mitigation strategies will be used to reduce the risk of COVID-19's spread, such as physical distancing, face coverings, electronic ticketing and crowd management designed to reduce fan congestion and contact."

"More information about COVID-19 mitigation strategies at Jack Trice Stadium, Hilton Coliseum and other athletic venues will be distributed prior to the opening of any venue to the public for a sporting event," the posting stated. The 50% benchmark goes along with what athletics director Jamie Pollard wrote in a May 26 message to fans, in which he said: "Attendance at Jack Trice Stadium would be limited to approximately 50 percent capacity in order to meet the current guidelines established by state and local officials." - Des Moines Register
