  09/28/20 - JaQuan BaileyrSr/2021, Iowa State, 6-2, 246 (DS#33 DE) + More +

Iowa State's JaQuan Bailey, who missed the last nine games in 2019 with a leg injury, is back in top form. His school record-tying 3.5 sacks in a 37-34 win over TCU made him the Cyclones' all-time leader with 22. He also became ISU's career leader in tackles for loss, with his four against the Horned Frogs giving him 36.5. His sack total against TCU was the Cyclones' highest since Jason Berryman had the same number against TCU in the 2005 Houston Bowl. - AP College Football

  09/26/20 - JaQuan BaileyrSr/2021, Iowa State, 6-2, 246 (DS#33 DE) + More +

Breece Hall ran for 154 yards and three touchdowns, JaQuan Bailey had 3 1/2 sacks to become Iowa State's career leader and the Cyclones opened Big 12 play with a 37-34 win at TCU on Saturday. Bailey's strip sack and recovered fumble just before halftime set up Brock Purdy's 17-yard touchdown pass to Darren Wilson for the Cyclones (1-1), who bounced back from a 17-point home loss to Louisiana-Lafayette in their opener two weeks ago.

Max Duggan threw three touchdowns after halftime for TCU, but linebacker Mike Rose made a diving interception - grabbing the ball only inches off the ground - with less than four minutes left. The pass went through the hands and off the knee of Taye Barber, who had an earlier touchdown catch. That set up a 32-yard TD run by Hall on third-and-2 with 2:54 left that made it 37-28. The sophomore ran basically untouched 75 yards to open the scoring in the second quarter, and had a 1-yard score earlier in the fourth when he leaped high in the air over the line and came down on his feet in the end zone. - AP College Football

  09/13/20 - Brock PurdySr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

The offense doesn't work without a high-level Purdy: An early-season loss is nothing new under fifth-year coach Matt Campbell, who is now 6-11 in the season's first month at Iowa State, but this is one that will sting for a team that believes it can compete for a Big 12 title. The Cyclones get two weeks off before their next game, but if Saturday is the baseline, the Cyclones have a way to go. The biggest issue for the Cyclones was an offense that had no punch. It starts with quarterback Purdy, who the Cyclones need to be great but was pretty bad against Louisiana. Iowa State isn't going to win games where he goes 16-35 for 145 yards and an interception. He was without one of his favorite targets and the wide receivers dropped balls, but Purdy was off all day. He's too important to the Cyclones to have that happen. - Des Moines Register

  09/13/20 - Charlie KolarrSr/2022, Iowa State, 6-7, 248 (DS#4 TE) + More +

Charlie Kolar is hurt: Purdy understandably gets so much of the offensive attention for the Cyclones, but tight end Charlie Kolar is comparable as a talent and pro prospect. The preseason All-American, though, was in sweatpants Saturday with what Iowa State called a "lower body injury." The Cyclones have depth at the position with Chase Allen, Dylan Soehner and Easton Dean, but Kolar is the star and the game-changer. Iowa State can make due without him, but they're a less dynamic offense when he's not on the field. It's unclear if Kolar will be available later this month at TCU. - Des Moines Register

Overrated? Well, you can certainly say that for now, if you want. Iowa State, ranked 25th for now but not for long, played poorly from start to finish during Saturday's 31-14 loss against Louisiana at Jack Trice Stadium. Quarterback Brock Purdy wasn't good. The offensive line was worse. The Cyclones' defense was the best unit on the field, but even that wasn't exactly what anyone would call solid. And those special teams? Insert a crazy, head-shaking emoji here. That aspect of the team has been something else for a while. And on Saturday, before family, cheerleaders and the band inside the stadium - it lived up to that unfortunate reputation. In the first half, it was Louisiana's Chris Smith outrunning everyone during a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to die the game. In the second, it was Eric Garror doing it on an 83-yard punt return into the end zone to give the Ragin' Cajuns a two-score game. One long return is unacceptable on its own. But two in the same game just about cements an 0-1 record.

How bad was this one, special teams aside? Purdy entered the game having thrown 70 passes in a row without an interception, but that streak ended. He overthrew receivers. Receivers dropped passes. I can only recall once when he went deep, when he overthrew Landen Akers around the Louisiana 20-yard line in the third quarter. That's not usually Purdy, but on this occasion, it was. And that topping-off-the-tank touchdown by Louisiana with 10 seconds left? A fitting end to a horrible Iowa State football afternoon. - Des Moines Register

  09/12/20 - JaQuan BaileyrSr/2021, Iowa State, 6-2, 246 (DS#33 DE) + More +

JaQuan Bailey is back at full-go after suffering a season-ending leg injury in Game No. 4 at Baylor in 2019. We heard how good he looked during voluntary workouts. We heard the same when contact work started. And Wednesday, he was announced as a starter. He didn't have to return for another senior season. He could have rehabbed, then tried to get into an NFL camp. He came back, however, and now he's listed as a starter. "He's been working very hard," cornerback Anthony Johnson said. "He's going to open a lot of eyes that closed." Bailey was forced to watch what could have been the final nine games of his college career last season. His Iowa State days could have been over, and no one would have blamed him if he chose to move on.

Bailey not only returned for a second senior season, but he also was one of three Cyclones on the media's 2020 all-Big 12 Conference preseason team. Some eyes may have been closed, but he at least left an impression on voting members of the press. He returns where he left off last season - one sack (or even a half-sack) shy of breaking the school's career record. He's No. 2 on the list of active FBS players - behind Miami of Florida's Quincy Roche (26) and Western Kentucky's DeAngelo Malone (19). His 31 ½ career tackles for loss is fifth in Iowa State history. His 37 career starts shares fourth in school history. - Des Moines Register

Make your own determination about Xavier Hutchinson being the next standout receiver that Iowa State hopes he becomes, but consider this: He said no to a last-minute pitch by Oklahoma. He said no when the Sooners' staff drew comparisons to All-World CeeDee Lamb, now in the Cowboys camp after being a first-round selection in the most recent NFL draft. He said no to a team that historically has one of the best quarterbacks in the college football land, and no to a team that's been in four of the past five college football playoffs. To hang with his June 2019 commitment to Matt Campbell says something about the junior, who at this time a season ago, was preparing with the rest of the Blinn Junior College team.

If you're a Cyclones fan, you should root for stories like these, because a receiver saying no to a program that has won or shared the last five Big 12 Conference regular-season championships? That should prove something, not only about Campbell's rising program, but also about the kind of players he recruits. "It wasn't tough at all, actually," Hutchinson said last week about his decision to stick with the Cyclones. "When you have a program like Iowa State's, with the coaches and the family-like experience you get here - it's really easy to say no to schools like that. "I commend Iowa State for everything they've done for me." - Des Moines Register

  08/30/20 - Kene NwangwurSr/2021, Iowa State, 6-0, 210 (DS#30 RB) + More +

Nwangwu is in the best football shape of his life. Let me repeat: Kene Nwangwu is as healthy as he's been since joining Iowa State's football program as a fleet-footed freshman way back in 2017. The torn Achilles and subsequent surgery he had in February 2017 isn't a factor. The nagging bumps and bruises aren't problematic, either. And yes, insiders say he's still the fastest player on Campbell's team. That should make every Iowa State fan perk up, because this senior from Frisco, Texas, is the most versatile player on what should be a very good team. He returns kicks. He catches passes. He's a tailback, and that's the takeaway here: A 100% Nwangwu means fortification to a running back position that just might, probably is, the finest array of talent on the team. It means one of the Big 12's top kick returners is about to start his final season at full health. It means the Cyclones have options. "Kene is the healthiest he's been in his career," Campbell said. "The strongest, biggest and most powerful that he's looked." He was a second-team all-Big 12 choice in 2018. He enters his senior season with a kickoff return average of 26.3 yards, third in school history. - Des Moines Register

  08/28/20 - Mike RoseSr/2022, Iowa State, 6-4, 243 (DS#16 OLB) + More +

Mike Rose burst on the seen as a true freshman in 2018 while O'Rien Vance did the same as a redshirt sophomore last season. They're a productive, athletic and high-IQ pair that have the stir up memories of Jake Knott and A.J. Klein. As a freshman, Rose was third on the Cyclones with 75 tackles, including nine for a loss. To make way for Vance last season, Rose showed his versatility and moved from middle to outside linebacker but still posted 77 tackles (9.5 for loss). The move, though, did not weaken the middle linebacker spot as the dynamic Vance tallied 66 tackles along with a team-best 6.5 sacks. With both now entering upperclassmen status as juniors and the defensive line being retooled, they'll be asked to do more. In defensive coordinator Jon Heacock's defense, the linebackers are positioned to star, and both Rose and Vance have the talent and, now, the experience to thrive. - Des Moines Register

  08/21/20 - Greg Eisworth IIrSr/2022, Iowa State, 6-0, 199 (DS#34 SS) + More +

Given the financial stakes of college athletics amid the pandemic and a new focus on social justice in the country, college athletes have been using their platforms and positions to make new demands of their universities. As such, there has been a renewed discussion of creating a players' association or unionizing, though those conversations and their logistics remain in a nascent state. "I'm not against it," Eisworth said, "but I can't say I'm all for it, either, because there are just so many unknowns. "But I'm all for players coming together and speaking up for what they believe in." Campbell echoed Eisworth's sentiment. "Players should have a voice," Campbell said, "and at this level they work really hard to have a platform to be able to have a voice and be able to use their platform in a positive way." - Ames Tribune
