  12/11/20 - Charlie KolarrSr/2022, Iowa State, 6-7, 248 (DS#4 TE) + More +

Tom Manning, Iowa State's offensive coordinator knows a thing or two when it comes to coaching tight ends. He took a hiatus from Matt Campbell's Iowa State staff in 2018 to coach the Indianapolis Colts tight ends. He returned to the Cyclones after that season, not only with some NFL tight-end tricks to suggest, but also with a knowledge of what it takes to be an NFL tight end. Because of that knowledge, I asked Manning on Tuesday what kind of professional Kolar would make - whenever that decision comes. It's a foregone conclusion Kolar will play in the NFL. It's just a matter of when.

"I think he'll be a really good one, whenever that day comes," Manning said. "Football is really important to him. He has a great work ethic. He's very skilled, and he's very good at what he does." He's an offensive threat, with all right speed, and at 6 feet 6 by 257 pounds, can a hold his own catching passes in traffic, on the edge and in his specialty, being a red zone mismatch that quarterback Brock Purdy can easily spot. Each of Kolar's five touchdown passes in 2020 have been on plays that started within opponents' 22-yard line - 3-yarders against Texas Tech and Kansas, a 22-yarder against Baylor, 6 yards against Kansas State, and 16 yards against West Virginia. - Des Moines Register

  12/09/20 - Brock PurdySr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Brock Purdy went into the locker room a month ago against Baylor after an erratic half of football in which he looked like a quarterback engulfed in chaos. He came back out as the picture of precision. The Iowa State signal-caller has been brilliant since that three-interception first half against the Bears, leading the Cyclones to a perfect finish of the regular season, including Saturday's 42-6 victory over West Virginia at Jack Trice Stadium. The junior now leads his team to its first-ever Big 12 championship game with the Cyclones (8-2, 8-1) finishing the regular season atop the league standings. "To finally be able to get to the game we all dream of playing in is sweet. It's special," Purdy, who was 20 of 23 for 247 yards and three touchdowns, said. "I feel like I'm in a good spot. I trust my teammates. I trust my coaches. I trust in myself and my game.

"Whatever we've got going right now, we're going to keep doing it, keep getting better and see if we can get it done in the Big 12 championship." In the 14 quarters since that Baylor first half, Purdy is 70 of 91 (76.9%) with 10 touchdowns, 903 yards and no interceptions. "He's been incredible," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. "We've played like he's played down the stretch. "Maybe one of the great leaders of all-time in the history of this school. He has played as close to what he's capable of playing in every game down the stretch. It's been really fun to watch him. He's the difference. He's really special." - Des Moines Register

2020 DOAK WALKER AWARD SEMIFINALIST: Breece Hall (So.), Iowa State,...Hall has also proven to be one of the most elusive and explosive backs nationally. He leads the nation in 50+ yard rushes (4), ranks second in 10+ yard rushes (34) and is second nationally in missed tackles (59). He has recorded just one lost fumble in 449 career touches. Statistics alone makes Hall's season incredible, but perhaps his biggest accomplishment on the year is his impact on winning. The Cyclones, currently ranked ninth nationally in the CFP poll, claimed first place in the Big 12 regular-season standings and a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game for the first time in school history. - Iowa State Football
