  09/15/21 - Brock PurdySr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

The most experienced quarterbacks in the Big 12 have already been sidelined this season for very different reasons. Skylar Thompson was off to good start in his sixth year in Kansas State's program before a knee injury that will keep him out indefinitely. Fourth-year Iowa State starter Brock Purdy was benched in the fourth quarter of the biggest home game in program history, though coach Matt Campbell has since reiterated his "great trust" in the quarterback. First-year Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is already shuffling starters, replacing inconsistent redshirt freshman Hudson Card with junior Casey Thompson. All of that is through only two games this season and the unexpected changes at the game's most important position stretch beyond the Big 12. - AP College Football

It's official: Iowa State will start the season as a top-10 football team. The Cyclones are slotted at No. 8 in The USA TODAY Sports AFCA preseason college poll, it was announced Tuesday. It marks the first time in program history that Iowa State will open the season in the top-10 and is yet another sign that the year will be the most anticipated ever for the program. USA TODAY began administering the poll in 1991. The Cyclones are coming off their best season after going 9-3 with their first conference championship game appearance and victory in a New Year's Six bowl with a win over Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl. Nearly the entire roster returns for sixth-year coach Matt Campbell, who has emerged as one of the sport's rising young coaches as he's brought Iowa State from the cellar of the Big 12 to the national stage. - Ames Tribune

  07/09/21 - Mike RoseSr/2022, Iowa State, 6-4, 243 (DS#16 OLB) + More +

Eight of Matt Campbell's players were selected to the media's all-Big 12 preseason football team, but that's just part of it. All-American tight end Charlie Kolar was the Big 12's only unanimous preseason selection, and offensive guard Trevor Downing made the team despite missing the final 11 games due to a lower leg injury. Another bit of respect was that linebacker Mike Rose was picked to be the preseason defensive player of the year.

They're among the reasons the Cyclones are likely to be a top 10 team nationally heading into the Sept. 4 opener against Northern Iowa. They're also a reason Iowa State will be favored to face Oklahoma again in the Big 12's championship football game. Offensively, 1,000-yard rusher Breece Hall made the team, as did receiver Xavier Hutchinson, Kolar, Downing and center Colin Newell. The defensive selections were end Will McDonald, Rose and safety Greg Eisworth. Rose, who has started all 38 games during his career, led NCAA linebackers nationally with five interceptions, the most by a Cyclone linebacker in school history. - Des Moines Register

An Iowa State-Oklahoma Big 12 Conference championship game rematch? Don't bet against it. Matt Campbell's Cyclones were picked to finish second in preseason balloting by the media. Who was picked first? Oklahoma, which beat Iowa State 27-21 in the 2020 championship game. That's been the anticipated pick since so many Cyclones opted to return for 2021. "We've proven a whole lot, to be honest," Campbell told reporters during spring practice. "We are outcome-aware, but our purpose and our process and our ability to become better in our process - I think it's exciting that there's young men that want to do that, even at this age." Eight Cyclones were selected to the media's all-Big 12 preseason football team Wednesday, including All-American tight end Charlie Kolar being the only unanimous selection. Linebacker Mike Rose was picked to be the preseason defensive player of the year. - Des Moines Register

  07/08/21 - Dimitri StanleyrSr/2024, Iowa State, 5-11, 188 (DS#125 WR) + More +

Of the 11 receivers on scholarship, seven are still technically freshmen, thanks in part to the NCAA not counting the 2020 season towards eligibility. All three walk-ons are freshmen, as well. There's not a single senior in the group. "The veteran guy is probably Dimitri Stanley, who's played a significant amount of college football," Chiaverini said. "Besides that, everybody else is really, really young, as far as their snaps in college football." Led by Stanley, a sophomore, and third-year freshman La'Vontae Shenault, it is a group that could be exciting to watch. Stanley, a Cherry Creek High School graduate, is entering his fourth year with the program. Counting the Alamo Bowl, he led the Buffs in receptions (20) and receiving yards (335) last season. He's had 55 catches in his career and has also handled the Buffs' punt return duties. - Daily Camera

If you want Iowa State's Heisman hopeful or the best quarterback in program history to wish a loved one a happy birthday or congratulate a friend on a promotion, all you need is $40. Breece Hall, the Cyclones' All-American running back, and Brock Purdy, the program's winningest QB, have joined Cameo, the personalized video service featuring celebrities, on the first day that NCAA athletes are permitted to profit from their own name, image and likeness. "Whether it's for birthday parties, motivation or just words of advice," Hall said in his introductory video on the service, "I can't wait to be on this app and connect with you guys and get to know you guys." Cameo has become increasingly popular among athletes and entertainers in recent years. It allows fans to request a personalized message that the celebrity delivers on the app for a price. - Des Moines Register

The Walter Camp Football Foundation, an all-volunteer organization and caretaker of the nation's oldest college football All-America team, has announced its 2021 Preseason All-American teams. Eight players who earned Walter Camp All-American recognition in 2019 and/or 2020 are on the 2021 preseason list. Leading the First Team preseason offensive unit is junior running back Breece Hall (Iowa State), who returns to the Cyclones after rushing for 1,572 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2020. On defense, Northwestern redshirt sophomore strong safety Brandon Joseph (49 tackles) is a First Team preseason All-American after earning First Team honors a year ago. - Walter Camp Football Foundation

The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, sponsors of the annual Lott IMPACT Trophy, has announced the 42 players on the 2021 Watch List. College defensive players are nominated to the Watch List based on the IMPACT on their teams on and off the field. IMPACT is an acronym for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity. The 42 represents Ronnie Lott's number during his legendary career. The Watch List was announced at a luncheon at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach June 15. Former NFL MVP and Hall of Famer Kurt Warner was the special guest speaker at the luncheon. The winner of the Lott Trophy, which will be announced in December, will receive $25,000 for his university's general scholarship fund. This is the 18th year for the Lott Trophy, which has donated more than $1.6 million to schools and other charities around the country. - Lott IMPACT Trophy

  05/04/21 - Kene NwangwurSr/2021, Iowa State, 6-0, 210 (DS#30 RB) + More +

One of the most unselfish football players during Iowa State's rise toward school history last season is headed to the NFL. Kene Nwangwu, the Cyclones' ultra-valuable skill-position backup and premier kickoff returner, was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the draft Saturday. He projects as a special teams player, primarily a kickoff returner, where he was 11th nationally last season with an average of 28.9 yards per return. "Kene was among a unique group of seniors who were really special," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said in a statement Saturday. "Kene has been through so much here at Iowa State. He had a great start to his career, and then he tears his Achilles. It was a long tough road back for him, and it wasn't easy. "To watch his leadership grow, see what he has done for our football program, and (Saturday), to see him get drafted, I am so thrilled for him." He's not the only Cyclones representation in NFL camps - tight end Dylan Soehner as a New Orleans free agent, receiver Landen Akers as a Rams free agent, record-setting defensive end JaQuan Bailey likewise with Philadelphia, and defensive back Lawrence White in Tampa's camp. - Ames Tribune

  04/30/21 - Trevor DowningrSr/2023, Iowa State, 6-4, 299 (DS#12 C) + More +

Trevor Downing's Operation Recovery looks to be complete. If Iowa State opened the season now, instead of Sept. 4 against Northern Iowa at Jack Trice Stadium, he'd back where he started. He'd be the No. 1 left guard on a very good offensive line again. That's the word from offensive coordinator Tom Manning, who told reporters Wednesday that Downing might be better than ever. "He's been playing with the ones," Manning said. "That's been a really good thing for us to see. He had a really good winter, with (strength coach Dave Andrews). That's paid big dividends for him. He's 100 percent back to normal. He's been really good. He feels healthy. He certainly looks stronger than prior to his injury." That was about the only question mark remaining for an offense that's essentially intact from last season - not only among the starters, but throughout the depth chart. Downing's good health means an exceptionally deep offensive line will have a combined 93 career starts among seven players when the season begins. From center Colin Newell's 26 starts to right tackle Joey Ramos' five, it's got every opportunity to be the Cyclones' best line ever. - Des Moines Register

  04/21/21 - Charlie KolarrSr/2022, Iowa State, 6-7, 248 (DS#4 TE) + More +

Faced with one of the most consequential decisions of his life, Charlie Kolar flipped a coin. Not so much to render a verdict, though, as to give him some insight into his own thinking about the prospect of staying for a fifth season with the Iowa State football team or leaving for the NFL. "My parents taught me this technique - when you can't make a decision, flip a coin and you say you're going to make a decision based on the coin flip," the All-American tight end said. "The way you feel afterward gives you a pretty good idea of what you actually feel (about a decision)." So, Kolar flipped a coin after the 2020 season. "I think it landed for Iowa State," he recalled, "and I felt good about it."

The choice to return to Ames for another season was certainly one Iowa State felt good about, keeping one of the nation's top tight ends in the fold going into a season in which the Cyclones will be ranked in the top-10 and have College Football Playoffs aspirations. "He's light years ahead of where he was going into last season and we're only in April right now," Iowa State tight ends coach Taylor Mouser said. "The steps that we could take over the next months before the season, there are still a lot of areas we can get better at, as crazy as that sounds." The 6-foot-6, 257-pound Kolar had 44 catches for 591 yards and seven touchdowns last season, but in addition to simply being a year older and more experienced, there's reason to expect even better performance in 2021. - Des Moines Register

  04/06/21 - Dimitri StanleyrSr/2024, Iowa State, 5-11, 188 (DS#125 WR) + More +

In the past two seasons, Dimitri Stanley has become one of Colorado's best receivers. The sophomore doesn't believe, however, he's reached his full potential. "I want to improve upon my blocking," Stanley said after the Buffs' third practice of spring on Friday. "I think I could have been a lot more efficient in the blocking game and in the run game. And then pretty much yards after catch - I think I can do a lot more from that standpoint. "Even on punt return, I think I can be one of the best returners in the (Pac-12). Just going into the season with that kind of confidence is going to take my game to the next level."

With KD Nixon transferring to Southern California this winter, the 6-foot, 190-pound Stanley is entering his fourth season with the Buffs as the most experienced receiver on the team. In 21 career games, Stanley has caught 55 passes for 690 yards and three touchdowns, while returning 18 punts for 124 yards. During the abbreviated 2020 season, he caught a team-high 20 passes for 335 yards and a touchdown. During the first week of spring practices, Stanley feels ready to take his game to another level. "So far I feel a lot better, honestly," he said. "I feel faster, stronger, quicker. I feel like I'm making guys miss. I feel like I'm catching the ball better. I'm honestly thinking that I'm just getting ready for the season now. I think I'm halfway there already. So, from this standpoint, it's just seeing how far I can go." - Daily Camera

  04/05/21 - Jake HummelrSr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 225 (DS#30 OLB) + More +

Jake Hummel could read a depth chart. He also knew talent when he saw it. The Dowling Catholic product could do a little math, too. Despite playing as a true freshman, Hummel had Marcel Spears a year ahead and a spot above of him at linebacker. Spears, a three-time all-Big 12 selection, wouldn't be surrendering a starting linebacker spot. That left, Hummel knew, just one season for him to show what he could do as a starter for the Cyclones. As preparation for that lone year began, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, throwing everything into question. Eventually, though, the football season would come to be and, because of the NCAA's blanket waiver of additional eligibility, Hummel gets the chance to build upon his best season of football at the collegiate level. "This extra year, I knew I was going to have it," Hummel said Wednesday, "and I knew right away I was going to come back. "After last season I'm only more hungry to get better and work on myself." Hummel excelled in his first year as a starter, earning honorable mention all-conference honors after starting all 12 games and finishing second on the Cyclones with 77 tackles. - Des Moines Register

  02/08/21 - Brock PurdySr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell has agreed to a new eight-year contract through 2028 after leading the Cyclones to the Big 12 championship game and a New Year's Six bowl. The school did not release terms of the contract Monday. The Cyclones are coming off their most successful season in school history. They were 9-3 overall and first in the Big 12 at 8-1. They lost to Oklahoma in the conference championship game, then beat Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl and were No. 9 in the final Associated Press Top 25. Iowa State also agreed to provide Campbell a total of $3 million for staff salary increases over the next three years. - AP College Football

Iowa State's historic football season received more national respect Tuesday: Matt Campbell's team checked in at No. 9 on both the Amway Coaches Poll and the AP's final 2020 poll. It's just the third time the Cyclones found a place in the AP's final ratings. The others were No. 25 after the 2000 season, and 19th after the 1976 season. This was the first time Iowa State finished among the Top 25 by the coaches. Iowa State concluded a 9-3 season by whipping Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl. Campbell's team returns nearly every starter for another run in 2021. - Des Moines Register
