After an on-again, off-again courtship, Greg Schiano is back as Rutgers football coach. Of course, it didn't go off without a Rutgers-like hitch. There was a glitch with microphones at a public hearing before the deal became official. The university's Board of Governors on Tuesday approved an eight-year, $32 million contract to bring back the former Scarlet Knights coach to lead the downtrodden program that has lost 21 straight Big Ten Conference games and won seven others over the last three seasons. The 53-year-old Schiano will be introduced at a news conference on Wednesday.

The agreement, which was signed by Schiano and athletic director Pat Hobbs on Saturday and announced on Sunday, will give the coach a $4 million annual salary and $7.7 million annually to hire a staff, with the amount increasing 3% annually. The incentive-laden contract runs through February 2028. The board's vote on telephone conference call took less than 10-to-15 seconds. The 20 minutes before the vote were mostly procedure measures and a chance for some to vent about problems at the university not related to football. Five people addressed the board on issues ranging from a new contract for more than 1,100 physicians associated with the university, spending money on an athletic department that annually loses money and a failure of the board to release terms of Schiano's deal before approving it. - AP College Football

Greg Schiano and Rutgers have agreed to a deal that will bring the former Scarlet Knights coach back to lead the program, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity early Sunday morning because contract details were still being finalized. Yahoo! Sports first reported Schiano and Rutgers had agreed in principle to a deal. The move comes a week after both sides walked away from negotiations and declared the possibility of a reunion dead. Rutgers had offered Schiano an eight-year contract worth $32 million, but the two sides could not agree on other financial commitments by the school toward improved facilities and infrastructure. - AP College Football

  11/09/19 - Brandon PetersrSr/2022, Illinois, 6-5, 228 (DS#15 QB) + More +

Brandon Peters threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Barker with five seconds left, completing an incredible Illinois comeback and giving the Illini a 37-34 victory over Michigan State on Saturday night. Illinois (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) trailed 28-3 in the second quarter and 31-10 entering the fourth. Down 34-30, they converted fourth-and-17, then drew a pass interference flag in the end zone on another fourth-down pass. It was second-and-goal when Peters patiently rolled out to his right and found Barker open in the back of the end zone. Peters threw for 369 yards and three touchdowns.

The Illini are now bowl eligible for the first time since 2014. They've done it by forcing turnovers all season long, including four Saturday. "So much has gone into us being in this position," Illinois coach Lovie Smith said. "We always talk about starting fast but it's about the finish." Down 28-3, Illinois began its comeback when Peters threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Josh Imatorbhebhe on the final play of the first half. It wasn't so much a Hail Mary as it was just a long pass to a single-covered receiver deep down the field -- the first of several puzzling mistakes by Michigan State. Down 31-10, Imatorbhebhe scored on an 83-yard catch and run with 14:48 left in the fourth. Then Reggie Corbin scored on a 6-yard run to make it 31-24. - Illinois/AP College Football

Three defensive takeaways, including a pick-6, and timely offense carried red-hot Illinois past Rutgers 38-10 on Saturday. Dele Harding had 12 tackles and an interception return for a touchdown late in the game to lead Illinois (5-4, 3-3 Big Ten Conference). Brandon Peters was 6-of-11 passing for 120 yards and one touchdown. Dre Brown carried eight times for 31 yards and two touchdowns. Josh Imatorbhebhe had three receptions for 56 yards and a score. Johnny Langan was 5-of-10 passing for 86 yards and a touchdown for Rutgers (2-7, 0-6). He also threw one interception. Aaron Young carried the ball 12 times for 67 yards to lead the Scarlet Knights.

Mohamed Jabbie had three receptions for 64 yards and Rutgers' only touchdown, The Illinois defense was a force all afternoon, The Illini led the nation in fumble recoveries, was second in forced fumbles and second in turnovers gained coming into the game and did nothing but pad those numbers. The game was tied 10-10 at the half, but Peters unleashed a 54-yard scamper midway through the third quarter to the Rutgers' 2-yard line to set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Brown. On the next Rutgers possession, Nate Hobbs recovered a Langan fumble and ran it 32 yards for a touchdown to put Illinois up 24-10. Harding forced a fumble with 4:48 left in the third quarter and Illinois scored on the next play, a 52-yard touchdown pass to Imatorbhebhe. Early in the fourth quarter, Harding picked off a Langan pass and ran it back 54 yards for a touchdown. - Illinois/AP College Football

  10/26/19 - Dre BrownrSr/2020, Illinois, 5-11, 208 (DS#91 RB) + More +

Dre Brown ran for a career high 131 yards and Tony Adams returned an interception for a touchdown to help Illinois slosh through the rain Saturday for a 24-6 victory at Purdue. The Fighting Illini (4-4, 2/3 Big Ten) won their second straight game and claimed the Cannon Trophy for the first time since 2015. Purdue (2-6, 1-4) has lost two in a row and five of its last six, putting their postseason hopes in peril. It sure wasn't easy for the offenses in a steady storm with puddles forming around the end zones and sidelines. The Boilermakers gained only 271 total yards -- 99 coming on a fourth-quarter drive for their only points.

Illinois quarterback Brandon Peters scored on a 1-yard TD run late in the first half but was just 3 of 6 with 26 yards through the air. "Part of being a good football team is being able to put something behind you and move on," Illini coach Lovie Smith said. "Today it was about running the football." They made just enough plays to take control and never allowed the Boilermakers to challenge. Brown's 44-yard run set up James McCourt for a 38-yard field goal in the first quarter and Adams' 13-yard interception return made it 10-0 early in the second. - AP College Football
