2022 ALL-BIG TEN FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DB Sydney Brown, Illinois,...Brown tied for the national lead in interceptions with six, the seventh-most in program history and tied for the most by an Illini since Mike Gow had seven in 1973. He was also second on the team in tackles with 59 and had 3.5 TFLs, seven pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery for a touchdown. Brown gives Illinois All-Big Ten first team safeties in back-to-back years after Kerby Joseph was a first-team selection in 2021. He is the sixth Illini safety in the last 50 years to earn All-Big Ten first-team honors, joining Joseph (2021), Marlon Primous (1989), Glenn Cobb (1988), Craig Swope (1983), and Gow (1973). - Illinois Football

Safety Sydney Brown returned a touchdown and an interception for scores and Illinois snapped a three-game losing streak with a 41-3 rout of Northwestern on Saturday. Brown raced 53 yards for a touchdown after Northwestern quarterback Cole Freeman fumbled, then sprinted in for a 39-yard score off an interception, both in the third quarter. Illinois (8-4 overall, 5-4 Big Ten) entered with a chance to win the Big Ten West and advance to the conference championship for the first time. However, Purdue defeated Indiana 30-16 to win the division title and will play Michigan at Indianapolis next Saturday. Brown's twin brother, running back Chase Brown, punched in a 1-yard touchdown and finished with 61 yards on 19 carries. He entered leading the nation in yards rushing with 1,582 yards but fell short of Mikel Leshoure's single-season school record of 1,697 in 2010.

Tommy DeVito threw for 136 yards on 12-for-18 passing and ran for a touchdown, and Reggie Love III scored on 2-yard touchdown run to get the Illinois offense rolling. Caleb Griffin kicked a pair of field goals as the Illini finished with eight or more wins for the first time since the 2007 Rose Bowl team finished 9-4. The Illini have a winning conference record for the first time since 2007 when they went 6-2. The Illini handed Northwestern its 11th straight loss following a season-opening win over Nebraska in Dublin, Ireland. The Wildcats, 1-8 in the Big Ten, managed only Adam Stage's field goal. The Illini bounced back after a tough 19-17 loss at Michigan last week. Jake Moody made a 35-yard field goal for the Wolverines in that one with nine seconds left, handing Illinois its third straight loss after winning six straight. Illinois led 17-0 at the half on Love's 2-yard TD punch-in, Griffin's 23-yard field goal and De Vito's 1-yard keeper with 1:25 left. - Illinois/AP College Football

The one-year anniversary of name, image and likeness taking college athletics by storm hits next week. It took nearly that entire calendar year for Illinois football players Chase Brown and Sydney Brown to take advantage of those new NIL opportunities. The Brown twins, who hail from Windsor, Ontario in Canada, are part of the roughly 12 percent of college athletes from outside of the United States. The way NIL deals could complicate F-1 student visas meant those international athletes had their opportunities curtailed. Heading back to Canada this month, though, opened the door for the Browns to finally take advantage.

They partnered with Australian athletic leisure ware brand LSKD and with some law firms in Canada. "We had people that were interested in my brother and I enough to invest money and use us as ways to endorse their company," Chase Brown said. "We've been excited to work with them and partner with them and look forward to future opportunities." Sydney Brown is putting NIL on the back burner for the moment. The Illinois football team has reconvened for the summer and workouts, including, for the first time, the opportunity to work with the coaching staff, is his focus. "It was fun, but it's distracting," Sydney Brown said about exploring NIL opportunities while at home in Canada. "I'm looking forward to stepping away from it for a little bit. As beneficial as it is, it's distracting at the same time. It takes you away. It's a whole other side of life. It's just different. There's football, and then there's NIL." - News Gazette Tribune

Illinois defensive passing game coordinator and safeties coach Gill Byrd said Friday he is leaving the program because of an unspecified illness in his family. Byrd, who worked with head coach Lovie Smith for three NFL teams, coached at Illinois for two seasons. "Gill Byrd is like a brother to me," Smith said. "As good a coach as he is on the field, Gill is even a better person. I hope for nothing but the best for Gill and his family. We will miss him greatly around our program." Smith said Keynodo Hudson will coach all defensive backs next season after coaching the cornerbacks in 2019.

Alfred Davis (defensive tackles coach) and Jimmy Lindsey (defensive ends) will join the program. Davis spent the past two seasons at Hutchinson Community College while Lindsey spent the last three seasons at Western Kentucky. Illinois is coming off a 6-7 season that included three straight losses, but Smith and others are optimistic after reaching a bowl game and putting together a four-game winning streak highlighted by an upset of then-No. 6 Wisconsin. The Illini open the season Sept. 4 against Illinois State. - AP College Football
