Roderick Perry II, Illinois, Player News

Illinois football's defensive line received yet another boost Tuesday when the team announced that Roderick Perry II will return for the 2021 season. Perry joined Illinois ahead of the 2020 campaign after four years at South Carolina State. The 6-foot-2, 300-pound athlete out of Raleigh, N.C., earned All-Big Ten honorable-mention status by posting 17 tackles, 21/2 tackles for loss, two sacks and one pass breakup. Perry is the fourth Illinois defensive lineman to announce his return for coach Bret Bielema's first season in charge, joining Jamal Woods, Isaiah Gay and Owen Carney Jr. - News Gazette Tribune

Off the field, Perry is laid back. He cracks jokes in his interviews over Zoom and is honest in his responses. But, as Wilkes said, when the whistle blows he's a different animal. Wilkes had the unfortunate job of being offensive coordinator and seeing Perry on the defensive line ready to work. Always. Never a play off. It helped the Cary offensive linemen come game time after a week worth of seeing Perry lined up against them. "What sticks out the most about Rod is that consistency," Wilkes said. "It wasn't like he had this glimpse of greatness and moments of normalcy. It was always a high level with him. Even at practice, he competed hard. When the play was over or after practice, he was laid back and joking with his teammates. In between the whistle, you know what you were going to get."

Illinois head coach Lovie Smith called Perry a godsend in the offseason. The 6-foot-2, 300-pound defensive tackle came along at the exact perfect time after the Illini lost Jamal Milan, Tymir Oliver and Kenyon Jackson to graduation. In reality, Perry may not have even been available had it not been for COVID-19 postponing the MEAC's season and South Carolina State's coaching staff encouraging Perry to go somewhere he could play immediately. Perry's phone blew up and so too did Wilkes'. In the end it came down to Illinois and Florida and a call from Smith sealed the deal to bring Perry to Champaign. - Herald-Review Times

The Illini are still not yet at full strength when it comes to their roster. Smith reiterated Friday they were still waiting on a couple players to arrive on campus. That small group includes South Carolina State graduate transfer Roderick Perry. Perry committed to Illinois on July 30. The 6-foot-2, 300-pound defensive tackle out of Raleigh, N.C., had 34 tackles last season for the Bulldogs, which included 14 1/2 tackles for loss and 4 1/2 sacks. "We lost good inside players that played a lot of football for us," Smith said. "To have a chance to get a player of his caliber this late in the game - he became available, we started talking to him. He plays hard. He's going to bring a lot of toughness to our team." - News Gazette Tribune

The transfer pipeline continues in full force for the Illinois football program. Less than 24 hours after Lovie Smith's program added Southern California tight end Daniel Imatorbhehbe - the older brother of Illini receiver Josh Imatorbhebhe - on Wednesday night, the Illinois defensive line received a boost Thursday morning with the commitment from South Carolina State transfer Roderick Perry. Perry posted a note on his Twitter account on Thursday morning announcing his transfer to Illinois. "Due to unforeseen circumstances and after discussing it with coaches and family, we collectively decided that the best decision for me was to enter the transfer portal," Perry wrote. "It was never my intention to leave my Bulldog family at South Carolina State University. In the fall of 2020 I will be joining the fight with the University of Illinois." Perry, a 6-foot-2, 300-pound native of Raleigh, N.C., posted 34 tackles last season at South Carolina State, including 14 1/2 for loss to go along with 4 1/2 sacks. - News-Gazette

Amid reports in many states of a resurgence in confirmed COVID-19 cases, including Georgia, the annual season-opening showcase is scheduled to be played at "Pete" Petit Field at Georgia State Stadium. Grant, the MEAC/SWAC Challenge executive director, told The News-Star that his event organizers believe they have a plan in place to be able to host Grambling State and South Carolina State on Sept. 6.

"No one knows how things are going to go going forward, but we're hosting football," Grant said. "We're making the call. As it stands today, we're hosting. Unless circumstances change, and no one know what that would be, but we're playing. "Both schools have said it's their full intention to be here. So it's our full intention to provide everything possible so people can have fun, come together responsibly and enjoy HBCU college football." Questions around the 2020 opener between Grambling and SCSU began to swirl last week as four HBCU games were canceled due to coronavirus concerns. - The News-Star
