Davis Brin threw four touchdown passes, Steven Anderson scored on a 1-yard run in the closing seconds and Tulsa blew a 17-point lead before the Golden Hurricane beat Northern Illinois 38-35 Saturday night. Rocky Lombardi threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Cole Tucker on the first play of the fourth quarter that gave the Huskies (1-1) their first lead at 28-24. Davis, on fourth-and-goal, answered with a 1-yard scoring strike to Keylon Stokes with 10:36 left but Lombardi added a 1-yard TD run to make it 35-31 with 5:57 to play.

Anderson was stopped for a 1-yard loss on fourth-and-1 from the NIU 46 but the Huskies failed to convert on fourth down a few plays later and Tulsa (1-1) took possession at its own 48 with 1:54 to go. Brin threw an incomplete pass and then was sacked by Michael Kennedy for a 4-yard loss before he hit Malachi Jones on third-and-14 for a 24-yard gain and then, a play later, connected with Stokes for a 31 yards before Anderson's touchdown capped the scoring with 58 seconds remaining. Lombardi was 18-of-31 passing for 259 yards and three touchdowns with an interception and Tucker finished with seven receptions for 123 yards. - Tulsa/AP College Football

Kyle Vantrease scored on an 8-yard run with 36 seconds left after Nebraska had taken its first lead, and Georgia Southern beat the three-touchdown-favorite Cornhuskers 45-42 on Saturday night. The Huskers' Timmy Bleekrode was wide left with a 52-yard field goal attempt as time ran out, and Georgia Southern players ran onto the field to celebrate the program's first win in 13 games against Power Five opponents. The loss again turns up the pressure on embattled Nebraska coach Scott Frost, who now faces a home game next week against No. 7 Oklahoma. The Huskers (1-2) had come into the Georgia Southern game 214-0 when scoring at least 35 points at Memorial Stadium.

The Eagles (2-0) piled up 642 yards, none bigger than the 75 they moved in 11 plays for the winning touchdown. Kyle Vantrease converted a fourth-and-2 pass and threw 27 yards to Khaleb Hood before he took off up the middle on a designed quarterback run for the go-ahead score. Casey Thompson moved the Huskers from their 23 to the Eagles' 34 before Bleekrode pulled his field-goal try to the left. Nebraska had taken the lead on Thompson's 1-yard run with 3:05 left after Marques Buford's second interception of the game turned back the Eagles as they tried to build on a three-point lead. Thompson led the Huskers 98 yards in 15 plays. Thompson and Anthony Grant churned out yards on the ground and Marcus Washington made a catch at the 1 that was upheld on video review before Thompson went over the pile at the goal line. The victory comes in only the second game for Georgia Southern coach Clay Helton, and it came almost a year to the day that Southern California fired him two games into his seventh season. - Georgia Southern/AP College Football

Kyle Vantrease threw four touchdowns passes and Georgia Southern gave new coach Clay Helton a 59-7 victory over Morgan State on Saturday night. Helton was Southern California's head coach from 2015-2021 before being fired last September after a 1-1 start. Seven weeks later, Georgia State hired Helton for the 2022 season. Vantrease put the ball up 46 times, completing 29 for 367 yards for a Georgia Southern program that has traditionally emphasized the run. He was intercepted once. Ten receivers made catches with Sam Kennerson grabbing seven passes for 99 yards and Khaleb Hood nabbing six for 88 and a touchdown. OJ Arnold and Jalen White had two scores each. It was 17-7 at halftime and 31-7 after three quarters before the Eagles added 28 points in the fourth. Alfonzo Graham rushed for 106 yards on 14 carries and Jordan Toles had a 50-yard pick-6 for the Bears, who have a new head coach in Damon Wilson. The Bears had four turnovers.   Wylan Free takes longer than most people to list siblings. He's got a long roll call with four brothers and five sisters. "I'm right in the middle," said Free, who has a twin sister, Kyja. Free also has been right in the middle of the action this fall practice at defensive back for Georgia Southern, where he transferred this summer after five years at Fresno State. The graduate transfer has one season of eligibility remaining, and the early returns are impressive. Here, Free is very quick when handling a task. "He's had two picks in two days," new head coach Clay Helton said Thursday after the second team practice.

Free intercepted a pass on Saturday as well. "He's somebody when we signed him, we actually said this kid can probably play all five positions in a nickel package," Helton said of the three cornerback and two safety roles. "He's very versatile. We started out over the summer looking at him at corner, got some work there. "Now we're looking at him at safety and he really has gone out there and made some plays on the back end. He's very rangy. He's got great length, great speed and great ball skills. Has a knack for coming down with the ball." Free, at 6-2 1/2 and 180 pounds, is taller than most of the defensive backs and gives the Eagles someone to match up with big receivers on the opposite side. It's a role he handled with Fresno State, where he started 22 of 43 games played from 2018-21 after redshirting in 2017. - Savannah Morning News

University of Tulsa football players have been working all summer in the weight room and studying film. On Wednesday morning, they finally got the chance to get out on the field and put it all to use. For starting quarterback Davis Brin, the official start of the 2022 season - the first day of practice - was long-anticipated, even if the players weren't even wearing full pads yet. That won't happen until Sunday. "It's amazing, I've been waiting for this day, been working all summer and it felt a little bit like Christmas Day for me today," Brin said. "Just being able to get back on the field, having offense, defense, everybody flying around, competing, I love it. It's always the most exciting time of the year, and we'll go and get better every day until Game 1." - Tulsa World

With the kickoff of the 2022 football season 40 days away, the Georgia Southern Athletics Department has announced its plans to celebrate 40 years of Eagle football in the modern era. Georgia Southern began playing football in 1924 as Georgia Normal School but suspended the sport after the 1941 season due to World War II. The Eagles resumed playing as an NAIA independent in 1982, and the first year of NCAA unclassified play was in 1983. In 1993, Georgia Southern joined the Southern Conference and began transitioning to the FBS in 2013 before beginning play in the Sun Belt Conference in 2014. The Eagles have won six NCAA Division I-AA national championships, 11 conference titles and three bowl games in their 40 years of uncompromised excellence. The Eagles will open the season on Saturday, Sept. 3 at home against Morgan State. - Georgia Southern Football
