  SEPT 13 SEC CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Stetson Bennett, QB, Georgia,...In his sixth career start and first since game six of last year, Bennett torched UAB to tie a school record with five touchdown passes (all in the opening half) after going 10-for-12 for 288 yards...Bennett started his day 5-for-5 with four scoring strikes of 73, 12, 89 and 61 yards as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 35-0 halftime edge...His scoring pass to freshman tight end Brock Bowers for 89 yards was the ninth-longest passing play in Georgia history...Bennett finished the game with a monstrous pass efficiency rating of 422.4. - SEC Football

  Stetson Bennett did his best to create a quarterback controversy at Georgia. Stepping in for injured starter JT Daniels, Bennett tied a school record with five touchdown passes in the first half to lead No. 2 Georgia to a 56-7 rout of UAB on Saturday. The senior completed his first five passes - four of them going all the way to the end zone for the Bulldogs (2-0), who didn't show any signs of a letdown after a 10-3 victory over Clemson in the opener. Bennett, a former walk-on, started five games last season before Daniels claimed the job. It looks as if Bennett hasn't given up on winning it back. "I guess it's just an innate confidence," he said. "If you believe you're good enough, it really doesn't matter the situation that is thrust upon you." Jermaine Burton set the tone by slipping behind the secondary to haul in a 73-yard TD from Bennett on Georgia's second offensive play, thrilling the raucous crowd of nearly 93,000 at Sanford Stadium.

It was the first full house between the hedges since the 2019 season. Crowds were limited to about 20,000 last season because of the pandemic. By the opening minute of the second quarter, Bennett had scoring passes of 12 yards to Kenny McIntosh, 89 yards to Brock Bowers and 61 yards to Arian Smith. At that point, Bennett's passer rating was a staggering 775.6. The Blazers' secondary didn't put up much resistance, leaving Burton, Bowers and Smith wide open with blown coverages. "It always helps when you've got great players all over the field," Bennett said. Bennett tacked on his fifth TD pass of the game with another to Bowers, the freshman tight end finding a seam in the zone to grab a 9-yard throw that sent the Bulldogs to the locker room with a 35-0 halftime lead. - Georgia/AP College Football

  Georgia jumped three spots to No. 2 behind Alabama in The Associated Press Top 25 released Tuesday, giving the Southeastern Conference the top two teams in the country for the 30th time in the 85-year history of the college football poll. It is the second time in the last three seasons and the third in the last five that the SEC is sitting 1-2 in the AP Top 25, which is presented by Regions Bank. Alabama and LSU had a four-week run as Nos. 1 and 2 in the 2019 season before they played each other.

The Crimson Tide strengthened its hold on No. 1 after it throttled Miami in the first full week of the regular season. Alabama received 59 first-place votes, up from the 47 it had in the preseason poll. Georgia received four first-place votes after beating Clemson 10-3 in the opening weekend's biggest game. Ohio State moved up to No. 3 and Oklahoma dropped two spots to No. 4. Texas A&M is fifth, giving the SEC three teams in the top five. - AP College Football

  Georgia coach Kirby Smart knew his defense was super athletic. He didn't know they would be this good. Christopher Smith returned an interception 74 yards for a touchdown and the fifth-ranked Bulldogs turned in a defensive effort for the ages, toppling No. 3 Clemson 10-3 on Saturday in the opener for both teams. The Bulldogs held the Tigers to 2 yards rushing and sacked D.J. Uiagalelei seven times to position themselves for a serious run at the College Football Playoffs.

Uiagalelei finished 19 of 37 for 178 yards with one interception. He bobbled snaps, was out of sync with his receivers and spent most of the day under heavy duress against a relentless Bulldogs pass rush. "We frustrated and confused them," Smart said. Even when Georgia turned the ball over, the Tigers couldn't take advantage. Trailing 7-0 in the third quarter, Baylon Specter appeared to give the Tigers some momentum when he intercepted JT Daniels' pass at the Georgia 33. But after a short gain on first down Uiagalelei was sacked on consecutive plays and Clemson was forced to punt. Clemson didn't score until 9:08 left in the game when a 44-yard reception by Joseph Ngata and a defensive pass interference penalty set up a 22-yard field goal by B.T.   Georgia's defense trots out on its first possession by nightfall on Saturday and thousands of fans at a near 50-50 split cheer around them. Those in red and black will get their first look at No. 11, Derion Kendrick, in his new white jersey and the iconic Bulldog silver pants. He will likely start as the team's top cornerback. His eyes will lock on Clemson's top receiver. Kendrick might look out of place for a moment, because well, the highly-regarded defender has always been known as a star on the other side.

Kendrick transferred to Georgia over the offseason after an abrupt end to his 2020 season at Clemson. After being cleared of criminal charges in York County, South Carolina, it set the stage for Kendrick's debut against his former team. "We've spoken to him about it and we continue to," Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said Monday. "The hurdle is more of the emotional side in playing your former teammates and old family. It can be a knee-jerker and tough on you at times." Clemson molded Kendrick. It's where the 6-foot, 190-pound cornerback earned All-ACC honors. Now, he's one of Georgia's biggest assets. Kendrick has been discussed ad nauseum among Smart, Georgia coordinators and a slew of players for the month leading up to his debut against the Tigers. Each review has been full of praise. "He came in ready to work and didn't complain about anything. He's been grateful for the opportunity, and that made me look at him as a guy with something to play for," middle linebacker Nakobe Dean said. "It might take a minute for a transfer to buy into the team culture, but he hopped in and was part of us right away." - The State

  UGA football likely will be without two expected key contributors for its top five season opening matchup against Clemson on Sept. 4. Georgia confirmed Wednesday that tight end Darnell Washington and nickel back Tykee Smith sustained foot injuries, but didn't detail how long they may be out. The players underwent surgery that could keep them out four to six weeks, according to a source.

"Darnell Washington and Tykee Smith sustained foot injuries during practice this week," coach Kirby Smart said in a statement released Wednesday afternoon.   UGA football could be without two expected key contributors for its top five season opening matchup against Clemson on Sept. 4. Georgia confirmed Wednesday that tight end Darnell Washington and nickel back Tykee Smith sustained foot injuries, but didn't detail how long they may be out.   Georgia didn't make it out of its first weekend of preseason practices without a starter on offense being sidelined by injury, according to sources. Center Warren Ericson sustained an injury to his left hand that he uses to snap the ball and that could keep him out for several weeks. UGASports.com was the first to report on the injury. Redshirt freshman Sedrick Van Pran-Granger could step in for Ericson until he's able to return. Georgia opens the season on Sept. 4 against Clemson in Charlotte. - Athens Daily Banner

  Last season, Nakobe Dean's performance as Georgia's linebacker and defensive anchor rose to another level. The former coveted prospect out of Horn Lake, Mississippi recorded 71 tackles. Turns out, Dean did so with a hurt shoulder. He suffered an injury in the first or second week of the season, he said, and didn't miss any time until undergoing offseason surgery and sitting out spring practice in 2021. "It was something I knew I'd have to get looked at," Dean said. "I decided to play through it." A new preseason camp approaches and Dean has a clean bill of health along with the expectations to be one of the SEC's premier linebackers. - Macon Telegraph

  Last season under the bright lights of the Georgia-Florida rivalry game, one of the Bulldogs' young talents suffered a scary moment on the TIAA Bank Field turf. Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint had made it through the halfway point of his freshman season and was starting to emerge. The former four-star recruit was making a name for himself with more playing time in big moments against Arkansas (two catches) and Alabama (an 18-yard reception). Against the Gators, he hauled in his first-career touchdown pass for the first score in a would-be 44-28 defeat to Florida.

Everyone around the then-freshman celebrated after the impressive 32-yard grab, but then Rosemy-Jacksaint came down awkwardly. His ankle twisted in ways it shouldn't, and Rosemy-Jacksaint suffered a compound fracture on a gruesome injury that many couldn't bear to watch. His season ended after four games. About eight months later, Rosemy-Jacksaint has made his return as Georgia begins preseason practice for the 2021 campaign. "Marcus Rosemy is good. He has been doing everything," Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said Friday. "He had a slight ankle sprain around media days, but he is back from that and doing great." - Macon Telegraph

  A real estate company claims Tykee Smith, the All-American former WVU football player who transferred to Georgia, owes it almost $8,000. Dark Knight LLC, which owns Chateau Royale, sued Smith in Monongalia County Magistrate Court on June 3. According to the civil complaint, Smith "owes rent, late fees, yearly garbage." It seeks $7,941 plus court costs. An attempt to serve Smith on June 11 was unsuccessful. The civil complaint gives Smith's address as an apartment on Valley View Avenue.

On July 20, it was ordered a legal notice would be published. That notice ran in The Dominion Post on July 23. It states Smith has until Aug. 8 to submit a response to Magistrate Sandy Holepit or default judgment will be taken against him. Smith started the last two seasons for the Mountaineers at spur safety. He started nine games in 2020, finishing with 61 tackles and eight for loss, along with two interceptions, earning All-America honors. - Dominion Post

  Former Clemson cornerback Derion Kendrick had one final message for the Tigers when he announced his transfer to Georgia in June. "To my brothers at Clemson, the coaches that supported me, and to my fans I appreciate you for not giving up on me," he wrote in an Instagram post on June 1. "There are times in life when changes become necessary for one to grow, some people have to walk out of your life for others to walk in!!!" His transfer destination just happened to be with Clemson's season-opening opponent on Sept. 4 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Kendrick is expected to be competing for a starting spot for the Bulldogs right away.

Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney addressed Kendrick's new college home first time Tuesday. It didn't surprise Swinney at all that Kendrick was able to find a home with Georgia. "They're a great program, do a great job defensively," he said. "It's a good opportunity for him. I'm just happy that he has an opportunity to finish up, hopefully strong." The transfer added another wrinkle in a contest that already had plenty of storylines. For one, it has College Football Playoff implications despite it being the first game of the year, and now it'll put Kendrick against his former squad. Instead of going against Justyn Ross, E.J. Williams and Joseph Ngata in practice, he'll have to line up against them in real time. "Love DK and wish him all the best," Swinney said Tuesday. "In every game but the first one, I'll be pulling for him." - The State
