  Cornerback Derion Kendrick, who was dismissed from the Clemson football team in February, is transferring to the Bulldogs. Kendrick announced his plans on Instagram late Tuesday. "I'm focused, determined and ready to WIN!! #godawgs," he wrote. His experience with the Tigers should mean the first team All-ACC pick can be penciled in as a starter for Georgia which lost both of its starting cornerbacks. Kendrick comes with some off-field issues. He was arrested in his hometown of Rock Hill in March for unlawful carrying of a handgun, a misdemeanor, and cited also for simple possession of marijuana.

The marijuana charge is heading to pre-trial intervention, according to records of the Rock Hill Municipal Court. The handgun charge is still pending, according to York County prosecutor Misti Horton who declined further comment to the Athens Banner-Herald Tuesday afternoon through her office. Kendrick missed multiple games last season for "disciplinary reasons," according to the Greenville News. Georgia lost first-rounder Eric Stokes and second-rounder Tyson Campbell. The 6-foot, 190-pound Kendrick is in line to face his former team right out of the gates in the Sept. 4 opener in Charlotte against the Tigers. - Athens Daily Banner

  Former Clemson defensive back Derion Kendrick has found a new place to finish his college football career. Both 247Sports and Sports Illustrated reported Tuesday that Kendrick is transferring to Georgia - confirming an AJC report last week that said the move was in the works. He'll enroll in Athens in the next 24 hours, according to the 247Sports report. He will have two more years of eligibility with the extra year because of COVID-19. Georgia and Clemson kick off the 2021 football season in a game that will be played at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Kendrick and former LSU tight end Arik Gilbert are both on their way to join Kirby Smart's Bulldogs, according to Tuesday reports. In February, Clemson announced that Kendrick wasn't on the roster, but the school never confirmed whether or not the senior's departure was discipline-related. Kendrick recently told the On Campus with JB & Sciggy podcast that he wasn't in school because of family obligations and "didn't have too much communication" about it with the Clemson coach staff. He did miss time last season due to discipline issues, including sitting out the Nov. 28 win over Pitt. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney wished Kendrick the best for the future. - The State

  Georgia took the field for its G-Day spring game missing a player who will feature prominently this fall. West Virginia defensive back transfer Tykee Smith is not in Athens yet and did not suit up in the game. He put up strong numbers for the Mountaineers last season, recording 61 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, two interceptions and five pass break-ups. Smith has the versatility to play anywhere in the defensive secondary. He can play outside corner, in the slot or slide in at safety. He seems to be a strong candidate to battle for the hybrid STAR position in Georgia's defense. In the spring game, as well as last season's Peach Bowl, that role belonged to senior Latavious Brini. Wherever he slides in on defense, Smith figures to be a key contributor to the Georgia secondary. In addition to being a talented player, he brings game experience the Bulldogs lack in the defensive backfield. Once he arrives in Athens, it will be up to head coach Kirby Smart and defensive coordinator Dan Lanning to determine how best to utilize his talents. - Macon Telegraph

  This January, like every January in recent years, the stay-or-go decisions of underclassmen go a long way into shaping the roster of Georgia and other big-time college football programs. Georgia got a boost when nose guard Jordan Davis, offensive lineman Jamaree Salyer and running back Zamir White returned and took a hit when cornerbacks Tyson Campbell and Eric Stokes declared for the NFL draft. Maybe just as important to the experience and depth on the 2021 Georgia season are decisions by offensive guard Justin Shaffer and three other seniors to return for another season.

Shaffer joined defensive linemen Devonte Wyatt and Julian Rochester and wide receiver Demetris Robertson in delaying pursuing a pro career. They took advantage of an extra year of eligibility offered by the NCAA because of the pandemic. "It was a tough decision," said Shaffer, who announced his plans a week after the Bulldogs' Peach Bowl win. "I feel like I had a lot that I needed to come back and prove. Also, it gave me a chance to come back and graduate and get my degree." Georgia's four so-called "super seniors" in the SEC are fewer than only two of Alabama and Auburn, according to the Associated Press. Missouri led the way with 12 followed by Tennessee with 11 and Ole Miss and Arkansas with 10 each. - Athens Daily Banner

  In boilerplate language that is becoming all too familiar for those that follow college athletics, West Virginia sophomore spear Tykee Smith has announced he is entering the transfer portal. Smith recorded 61 tackles, including eight for losses, in his sophomore season of 2020 at West Virginia. That came after a true freshman season in which he had 53 stops, including 2.5 behind the line. He had two interceptions in each of his two seasons, and also totaled 13 pass deflections over that time. A native of Philadelphia, Smith was viewed by some as a potential transfer candidate when defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae left for the same position at Georgia in late January. However, as February went by and spring practice began today at West Virginia, that possibility appeared to have lessened, making today's announcement a bit surprising. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

  Georgia's returning offensive firepower created plenty of optimism for what was in store for the 2021 season. The news Wednesday that star wide receiver George Pickens will undergo ACL surgery on his right knee will change that considerably and could impact the trajectory of the season with the possibility Pickens could be sidelined the rest of the year. The injury occurred in the Bulldogs' fourth spring practice on Tuesday on a non-contact play, according to the school. It was said to happen when the junior was running a route.

Georgia didn't explicitly call Pickens injury an ACL tear, but did say the Hoover, Ala., native had started a pre-op rehabilitation program under the direction of UGA's sports medicine staff. "The good news is that the MRI showed it to be an isolated injury with no other structures involved," UGA coach Kirby Smart said in a statement. "George is a hard worker. I know he will bring the same work ethic to rehab that he shows in practice every day." The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Pickens led Georgia with six touchdown catches and tied for the team lead with 36 receptions for 513 yards last season. He led the team with 49 catches for 727 yards and eight touchdowns as a freshman when he was Sugar Bowl MVP. - Athens Daily Banner

  One of Georgia's top players will be out indefinitely. The school announced Wednesday morning that standout wide receiver George Pickens, an Alabama native and former Hoover star, suffered an ACL injury during the team's Tuesday practice. Pickens was a five-star member of Georgia's 2019 recruiting class and had 36 catches, 513 yards and six touchdowns in eight games last season. That came after he posted 49 catches, 727 yards and eight touchdowns as a freshman. "The good news is that the MRI showed it to be an isolated injury with no other structures involved," said UGA head coach Kirby Smart. "George is a hard worker.   Former Clemson football player Derion Kendrick has been charged with gun and drug violations in his hometown of Rock Hill, according to officials and police records. Derion Rayshawn Kendrick, 20, was arrested Friday morning and charged with unlawful carrying of a handgun, said Lt. Michael Chavis of the Rock Hill Police Department. Rock Hill patrol officers were on May Court around 3 a.m. Friday when Kendrick was found in a car, Chavis said. Kendrick was asleep with a gun in his lap, court records show. Kendrick was issued a citation for simple possession of marijuana after a small amount of the drug was found and seized, Chavis said. Kendrick was the sole occupant of the vehicle, according to an arrest warrant obtained by The Herald. - The State

Kendrick, a senior, was the Tigers' most talented cornerback last season but started in just eight of 12 games because of injuries and "disciplinary issues."   Derion Kendrick was no longer on the roster, a Clemson official confirmed Sunday morning. The school would not say why and would not confirm whether or not the senior's departure was discipline-related. Dabo Swinney is expected to address Kendrick's situation after Monday's practice. Kendrick was named first-team All-ACC last season after appearing in nine games, with eight starts. He signed with Clemson for the class of 2018 as a five-star recruit from South Pointe High School in Rock Hill. Kendrick was projected by some to be a first round pick in this year's NFL draft, despite struggling in the Sugar Bowl against Ohio State as Justin Fields and the Buckeyes passed for 385 yards against the Tigers. However, he opted to return for his senior season, a decision that surprised many.   Georgia running back Zamir White, who rushed for 779 yards and 5.4 yards per carry this past season, announced Wednesday afternoon that he will be returning to Athens for his redshirt junior season. White has endured two ACL surgeries during his career - on his right knee as a high school senior and on his left knee that scratched his freshman season with the Bulldogs in 2018.   Clemson's top cornerback is returning for his senior season. Derion Kendrick announced on Instagram Monday night that he has made his NFL choice and is returning for one more year. Kendrick posted a picture with the caption "one mo" on Instagram and a source confirmed that Kendrick is indeed returning to school. Kendrick started eight games for the Tigers this past season, leading Clemson in pass breakups with six. He also had 17 tackles, one sack, an interception and a fumble recovery that he returned 66 yards for a touchdown.   The jolly No. 99 is returning to anchor Georgia's defensive line in 2021. Jordan Davis, Georgia's stalwart nose tackle, announced his plans to return to the program on Thursday afternoon. Davis has been a rising NFL Draft prospect as a player who can make a difference at the next-level with an agile 330-pound frame. Davis is arguably one of Georgia's biggest names to return for 2021 given his impact as a defensive leader and anchor. Georgia also saw a similar announcement from quarterback JT Daniels, the offensive leader. Davis' stock might've been impacted by an elbow injury suffered on Oct. 31 vs. Kentucky.
