Just in time for its biggest test of the season against No. 2 Tennessee's top-ranked offense, top-ranked Georgia's defense has lost outside linebacker Nolan Smith to a season-ending injury. Smith, who leads Georgia with three sacks and is fifth with 18 tackles, suffered a torn right pectoral muscle in last week's 42-20 win over Florida. Georgia announced Tuesday that Smith, a senior, will have surgery on Thursday and is expected to make a full recovery. Smith was one of only three returning starters from the 2021 defense that led Georgia to its first national championship since 1980. Despite having eight players from the defense selected in this year's draft, including five in the first round, Georgia (8-0, 5-0 Southeastern Conference) is second in the nation with its average of 10.50 points allowed. Saturday's matchup provides the opportunity for Georgia to prove it again has a championship-caliber defense. Tennessee (8-0, 4-0), tied with Ohio State for No. 2 in the AP poll, leads the nation with its average of 49.4 points per game. - AP College Football

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 2: 18. Nolan Smith, Sr, OLB, Georgia, 6-2, 235, 1,...Smith did his part in blanking Samford, 33-0, while allowing 128 total yards. He was credited with one tackle. Previous week, No. 18: Smith's length, strength, quickness and field smarts were obvious, especially against Oregon's running game in the Dawgs' 49-3 season-opening win. The Ducks seems to run away from him but the big guy took it as a challenge and tracked players all over the field. Only two tackles and no sacks, but Oregon game-planned to avoid him. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 40. Nolan Smith, OLB, Georgia, Senior. Notable 2021 stats: 55 tackles (31 solo), 3.5 sack, 3 FF. Last year's ranking: NR. One of the few holdovers from last season's record-setting defense, Smith has been largely overshadowed by former defensive line stars Jordan Davis, Devonte Wyatt and Walker. The No. 2 recruit in the 2019 class, according to ESPN Recruiting, Smith should have more of a spotlight this season. He had nine tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 56 tackles and three forced fumbles in 2021. - ESPN.com

Two Georgia football players that faced charges after offseason arrests had their cases resolved. Outside linebacker Nolan Smith completed a pre-trial diversion program after being charged with driving on a suspended license and speeding in a construction zone for going 89 MPH in a 55 zone on Jan. 19 in Winder. After a plea negotiation with Smith's attorney, Billy Healen, Smith was accepted into the diversion program, according to Barrow County solicitor general Kyle Sharry. "Essentially, we use the Pre Trial Program for cases which we believe are not so serious as to require formal conviction," Sharry said in an email. "I personally use these very often for young people."

Smith, a first-team preseason All-SEC selection who has represented the team in recent months at the Butts-Mehre expansion dedication and at SEC Media Days, said in March that he had just returned from Montana with his girlfriend when he was pulled over. Sharry said the Smith's license had just expired and was rectified quickly. "My license was expired and you're not supposed to drive with an expired license," Smith said. "I had to go to the DMV and get everything straightened out. I'm happy I did and you learn from mistakes like that." - Athens Daily Banner

Given the absurd talent Georgia lost to the 2022 NFL Draft - a majority of which came on the defensive side of the ball - defensive end Nolan Smith will have the spotlight on him all year long. A year ago to this point, no one thought of Travon Walker as a first-round guy, let alone the No. 1 overall pick. Thanks to a single year of great production and amazing athletic testing numbers, he had a meteoric rise. It is not too far-fetched to see Smith - a former No. 1 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite - following the same path, particularly with the opportunity the 2023 season provides. - DawgNation.com

After joining the Bulldogs as the top-ranked recruit in the Class of 2019, Smith displayed what he could become in his freshman season. He registered 18 total tackles and 2.5 sacks, becoming a regular in the outside linebacker rotation. Redshirt sophomore Azeez Ojulari and his 5.5 sacks return as a disruptive force on one side. If Smith can develop into a similar gameplan-altering player on the other side, opposing offenses would be put in a nearly impossible situation. - Macon Telegraph
