Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame (OSHOF) and Jim Thorpe Association released today the prestigious Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watchlist. This list includes 35 of the nation's best defensive backs, representing 10 conferences and one independent university. The preseason watchlist is selected by a screening committee whose members compile a list of up to 50 players. This list is not final, and players who have outstanding seasons may be added to the Semifinalists and Finalists lists as the season progresses. A preseason watchlist is compiled by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame based on previous performance and preseason All-America lists.

A screening committee consisting of OSHOF members monitors all defensive backs throughout the season, including watchlist players, and narrows the field to up to 15 semifinalists in October. This committee reconvenes on the Monday before Thanksgiving to select three award finalists. The three finalists are submitted to a national panel of over 250 sports writers, sportscasters, former players and coaches who vote to determine the winner of the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award. The winner will be announced on ESPN's live presentation of The Home Depot College Football Awards. - Jim Thorpe Association

  07/25/22 - Stetson BennettrSr/2023, Georgia, 5-11, 192 (DS#8 QB) + More +

Stetson Bennett was the star of Georgia's Media Day on Wednesday, as reporters gathered around the sixth-year senior at his table at the rear of the big room of the College Football Hall of Fame. Questions were hurled his way about being a champion, his route to stardom and the Bulldogs' quarterback room. Then he was asked about what more he could do to please the doubters. The knock against him was that he didn't have the moxie to lead Georgia to a win when it needed him too. Then he did it in the national championship, a game after a superb performance against Michigan in the semifinals.

What more could he possibly do to earn respect? He sat back, breathed heavily, and deliberated his answer. "If I'm sitting in the mirror wondering how I'm going to please all those people-that reeks almost of desperation," Bennett said on Wednesday. "Avoiding that poison, thoughts that enter your mind that you have nothing to do with...Why am I going to put 10,000 other people's opinions on my plate? I can't do anything about it." Bennett last season led the ninth best scoring offense while throwing the 16th most touchdown passes. His QB rating of 86.7% was third in the country, behind only Ohio State's CJ Stroud (91.6) and Alabama's Bryce Young (87.6), each ranked first or second on most QB lists. - Athens Daily Banner

One of the biggest Week 1 matchups no longer has tickets available to the general public. The anticipated Sep. 3 game between the Oregon Ducks and the Georgia Bulldogs, which will take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, has officially sold out, according to officials. Oregon and Georgia will likely be the highest-ranked neutral-site game of Labor Day weekend as both teams are expected to be ranked inside the top 15. According to Bovada, the Bulldogs are 17.5-point favorites to win the game.

Since the creation of the series in 2008, the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game has sold out 14 of 18 games. This year's game was also one of the most in-demand tickets in the series' history. "This has already proven to be one of the toughest tickets we've ever seen for the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game," Gary Stokan, Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO and president, said in a statement. "You have the defending National Champions squaring off with arguably the most successful Pac-12 team in the CFP era. With two passionate fan bases and the best neutral-site matchup on opening weekend, it's no surprise we've seen such a strong demand for tickets." The Oregon vs. Georgia Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game will kick off at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 3 and will air on ABC. This year's matchup marks only the second meeting between the teams and the first time since Georgia's 27-16 win at Sanford Stadium. - Register Guard

  07/22/22 - Amarius MimsJr/2024, Georgia, 6-8, 340 (DS#4 OT) + More +

Offensive lineman Amarius Mims returned after spring practices after putting his name in the transfer portal. The Bulldogs welcomed back happily the former five-star recruit. "He's done a tremendous job," Smart said. "He's victim to what every kid is. Opportunity vs. grinding it out, fighting it out and working his way up. He was doing really well in the spring and then he had an injury and from practice seven or eight on and that was tough. That missed time affected his ability to go out there and fight for playing time. He's had a tremendous work ethic since returning, he's been really positive since returning. He's still athletically gifted and he seems to have a better grasp of what we're doing offensively. The biggest thing with him is staying healthy." - Athens Daily Banner
