  2022 PRESEASON WALTER PAYTON AWARD WATCH LIST: TE Ryan Miller, Furman, R-Sr., 6-2, 221,...Miller, a fifth-year member of Furman's program and a two-time All-America performer, is coming off an impressive junior season that saw him collect 43 passes for 749 yards and seven touchdowns, which ranked third in the Southern Conference in all three categories. His 16 career touchdown receptions is a record for Furman tight ends. Miller is bidding to become the second Paladin to win the Walter Payton Award. In 2000 All-America running back Louis Ivory took home the prestigious trophy after rushing for a FCS (then NCAA I-AA) season leading 2,079 yards at 16 touchdowns, including a Furman record 301 yards and three touchdowns in a 45-10 win over Georgia Southern. - Furman Football

  Freshman Jace Wilson threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Miller and ran for a score and Dominic Roberto rushed for a career-high 216 yards as Furman held off Samford 41-34 on Saturday. Trailing 7-0, Wilson and Miller connected on a two-play drive to knot the score. DiMarcus Clay picked off Liam Welch on Samford's ensuing possession and returned it 32 yards to the Bulldogs' 2-yard line. Wilson ran it in from the 3 on third-and-goal for a 14-7 lead. The Paladins (6-5, 4-4 Southern Conference) never trailed again. Devin Wynn had two short TD runs for Furman (6-5, 4-4 Southern Conference), while Wayne Anderson Jr. had one. Welch completed 26 of 40 passes for 269 yards with TD throws to Montrell Washington and Jai'Rus Creamer for Samford (4-7, 3-5). - AP College Football

  Jace Wilson threw a pair of long touchdown passes in the second half and Furman stopped VMI twice in the closing minutes to earn a 37-31 victory Saturday. The win snapped a string of three straight losses for Furman (5-5, 3-4 Southern Conference). After the Paladins took a 17-0 lead on a 39-yard touchdown run by Wayne Anderson Jr., Seth Morgan fired a 56-yard touchdown pass to Michael Jackson and Hunter Rice punched over from the 2 to bring VMI back within 17-14 at intermission. Morgan hit Jackson again from 3-yards out to make it 24-21 with 6:28 left in the third quarter, and after Wilson launched a 64-yard touchdown pass to Chase Abshier, the pair combined for a third touchdown to trail 30-28 after three quarters.

Wilson hit Ryan Miller with a 73-yard touchdown pass to start the fourth quarter and the Keydets answered with a 28-yard Jerry Rice field goal, but Furman stopped VMI (6-4, 4-3) on downs on its final two possessions to end the game. Wilson was 13 of 24 for 269 yards passing without a turnover. Dominic Roberto carried 17 times for 100 yards and a touchdown and Anderson carried nine times for 73 yards. Morgan was 33-of-56 passing for 415 yards and Jackson caught 13 passes for 177 yards. Max Brimigion caught nine passes for 136 yards. - Furman/AP College Football

  Devin Wynn rushed for 206 yards and scored three touchdowns as Furman defeated Wofford 42-20 on Saturday. The Paladins (3-2. 1-1 Southern Conference) climbed out of a 10-0 hole with a 21-point second quarter and outscored Wofford 21-3 after halftime to win going away. Freshman Jace Wilson made his first career start, in place of Hamp Sisson, completing 14 of 23 passes for 189 yards and a 26-yard touchdown pass to Wynn to end the first half with Furman on top 21-17. Ryan DeLuca added a 7-yard touchdown run for Furman midway through the third quarter and Wynn and Wayne Anderson put the game away with TD runs of 7 and 6 yards, respectively. The Terriers (1-4, 0-3) were led by Irvin Mulligan with 126 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Peyton Derrick was 7-of-15 passing with a touchdown. Mulligan found a seam up the middle for a 72-yard scoring run that gave Wofford a 7-0 lead. - AP College Football

  Devin Wynn rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns, and the Furman defense held Tennessee Tech to 121 totals yards, 26 in the second half, as the Paladins defeated the Golden Eagles 26-0 on Saturday. Hamp Sisson, the reigning Southern Conference offensive player of the week, completed 17 of 29 passes for 196 yards for Furman (2-0). Wynn's 42-yard touchdown run opened the scoring midway through the first quarter, Timmy Bleekrode added four field goals and Wynn's 2-yard run capped the scoring late in the fourth quarter. Bleekrode's 51-yard field goal early in the fourth was his career long.

Tennessee Tech quarterback Davis Shanley completed 6 of 21 passes for 60 yards and was intercepted three times. The Golden Eagles (0-2) managed just six first downs and were 2 for 13 on third down. They crossed midfield once, on their opening drive when they reached the Furman 37-yard-line before punting. Furman cornerback Travis Blackshear had two interceptions, giving him three this season.   SEPT 6 SOCON FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hamp Sisson, Jr., QB, Furman, Birmingham, Ala.,...Furman quarterback Hamp Sisson went 25-for-40 for a career-high 362 yards and three touchdowns as the Paladins opened the season with a 29-18 win over No. 24 North Carolina A&T on Saturday. Sisson's 362 passing yards were the second-most in a game in the 117-year history of the Furman football program and more than doubled his 2020-21 seasonal average of 179.7 yards per game. The Birmingham, Alabama, native's 87-yard touchdown strike to tight end Ryan Adams in the third quarter tied for the fourth-longest pass play in program history and provided what would prove to be the game-winning points as the Paladins scored their first home win over a ranked opponent since 2018. Sisson also threw touchdowns of 17 and 41 yards on the day. Other nominees: Jaylan Adams (The Citadel), Quay Holmes (ETSU), Tommy Pollack (Mercer), Liam Welch (Samford), Seth Morgan (VMI), TJ Jones (Western Carolina) and Irvin Mulligan (Wofford). - Southern Conference Football
