  Jayquan Smith ran for two second-half touchdowns as Furman rallied past The Citadel 24–14 on Saturday in Southern Conference play. Smith's 2-yard run late in the third quarter gave the Paladins their first lead, and his 7-yard score midway through the fourth sealed it. He finished with 52 yards on 11 carries. Ian Williams handled the first-half scoring with field goals of 45, 36 and 21 yards as Furman (5–3, 3–2) took a 9–0 lead into halftime.

The Citadel (3–5, 2–3) stormed back early in the third behind quarterback Quentin Hayes, who connected with Jihad Marks on touchdown passes of 46 yards on consecutive drives to move ahead 14–9. Marks finished with 108 yards on three catches, all from Hayes, who threw for 194 yards. Furman's defense stiffened down the stretch, forcing a late fumble to close out its third home win of the season and snap a two-game skid. Quarterback Trey Hedden went 16 of 22 for 211 yards, and the Paladins ran for 139 yards as a team. - AP College Football

  WEEK 6 SOCON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jordan Miller, R-Fr., DB, Furman, Conyers, Ga.,...Miller had four tackles, two pass breakups and the game-sealing interception, which he returned for a touchdown, in Furman's 31-22 win over ETSU. The redshirt freshman made his most impactful plays of the day on the final drive of the game, beginning with a pass breakup in the final minute to save a potential game-winning touchdown by the Bucs. The product of Conyers, Georgia, finished the game by intercepting a pass at the Furman 5-yard line and returning it for a score on the game's final play. Miller's score was the third-longest pick-6 in Furman history and punctuated a 15-point comeback win, giving the Paladins their fifth-biggest comeback win since 1973. On Monday, Furman received votes in the AFCA and Stats Perform polls.   WEEK 5 SOCON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Joshua Stoneking, R-So., DE, Furman, Raleigh, N.C.,...Stoneking, who also won the honor on Sept. 15, logged six tackles, including two sacks, and a blocked field goal in Furman's 31-13 road win against Samford. The product of Raleigh, North Carolina, recorded his blocked field goal on the final play of the first half, keeping the Paladins' lead at 21-7. The redshirt sophomore also batted a pass in the game's final minute, leading to an interception by Garrison Butler at the Furman 14-yard line to end Samford's final drive of the contest. Stoneking currently leads FCS football in sacks (6.5) and tackles for loss (10.5).   Trey Hedden threw two touchdown passes and Raleigh Herbert had an unusual pick-6 to lead Furman to a 31-13 win over Samford on Saturday to open Southern Conference play. With the Bulldogs at midfield with a minute to go in the first half, Herbert attacked the quarterback on a blitz, battled a pass attempt up and caught it, racing 47 yards untouched to make it 21-7 at halftime.

Hedden was 28-of-41 passing for 272 yards. He had a 7-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Burrell that made it 14-0 late in the first quarter and a 4-yarder to Ja'Keith Hamilton early in the third for a 28-7 lead. The Paladins (3-1) had two interceptions, a fumble recovery and stopped two fourth-down attempts as well as seven sacks.   WEEK 3 SOCON OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Trey Hedden, So., QB, Furman, Tampa, Fla.,...Hedden completed 26-of-35 passes, throwing for a career-high 314 yards and two touchdowns in Furman's 28-24 road win against Campbell on Saturday. The sophomore led the Paladins to back-to-back scoring drives in the fourth quarter, overcoming a 24-18 deficit. The Tampa, Florida, native's first touchdown pass was a 24-yard strike in the second quarter, and the second was the go-ahead score to Evan James, who was named the FCS National Freshman Player of the Week on Monday , from 30 yards out with 4:50 remaining in the game. Hedden's completion percentage (.731) this season leads the SoCon and is third in the FCS. James finished with 134 receiving yards and produced six first downs with his receptions. In three games with the Southern Conference program, he's caught 25 passes for 291 yards and two TDs.   Trey Hedden had two passing touchdowns, including a fourth-quarter, go-ahead connection with Evan James, and Joshua Stoneking had a game-ending sack in a 3.5-sack performance to lead Furman to a 28-24 win over Campbell on Saturday afternoon. Hedden was 26-for-35 with 314 yards and two touchdowns and connected 10 times with James for 134 yards and a 30-yard touchdown to re-take the lead with 4:50 remaining. Campbell attempted to respond, pushing the ball to the Furman 10-yard line for a fourth-and-5 with 26 seconds remaining.

Stoneking effectively ended the game by sacking Campbell quarterback Kamden Sixkiller to force a turnover on downs. He had 2.5 sacks, including a forced fumble, and 4.5 tackles for a loss. A crucial swing happened in the second quarter, when a quarterback sneak by Sixkiller failed on a fourth-and-1 at midfield. Furman responded with a nine-play, 50-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 24-yard touchdown pass from Hedden to Jackson Pryor. JJ Cowan rushed for two second-half touchdowns for Campbell.   Taylen Blaylock opened the scoring with a 43-yard interception return and then sealed the season-opener with two more big defensive plays in leading Furman to a 23-21 win over William & Mary on Saturday. After the Paladins ended three-straight drives with Ian Williams field goals to take the lead, the Tribe had one last shot. On third-and-1 Blaylock burst into the backfield to tackle Rashad Raymond for a 4-yard loss. He then broke up the fourth-down pass and Furman ran out the last 1:56 from the Tribe 35.

Williams had a 50-yard field goal late in the third quarter and then connected from 42- and 32-yards in the fourth, handing William & Mary just its third loss in 47 FCS non-conference games. The Tribe had been 59-6 when leading after three quarters. After Blaylock's pick-6, William and Mary tied the game on a 3-yard run by Rashad Raymond. However, Devin Hester Jr., returned the ensuing kick 75 yards, setting up Trey Hedden's 4-yard pass to Evan James for a 14-7 Furman lead. Tyler Hughes capped a pair of long drives in the second half, the first on a 1-yard run then with a 9-yard pass to Sean McElwain, for a 21-14 lead for William & Mary. - AP College Football

Johanning helped Furman rank second in the SoCon in rushing yards (160 yds/game) and fortified the offensive line that protected the SoCon Offensive Player of the Year Tyler Huff and SoCon Freshman of the Year Carson Jones.   2023 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE CO-FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Carson Jones, QB, Furman,...Furman's Jones is the first Paladin to be named SoCon Freshman of the Year by the coaches. In six games played, including two starts, Jones was 57-for-101 for 542 passing yards and seven touchdowns to just two interceptions. Jones was named the SoCon Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 6 for his play at Chattanooga on Nov. 4. Coming into the game during the second quarter following an injury to Tyler Huff, Jones went 14-for-27 for 139 yards and two touchdown passes.
