  06/04/20 - Marvin WilsonSr/2021, Florida State, 6-4, 303 (DS#11 DT) + More +

Mike Norvell could have lost the locker room at Florida State. And the new FSU football coach hasn't even coached a game at the school. Norvell, who was hired as the Seminoles coach from Memphis at the end of last season, is in hot water with his players after a statement he made to reporter Tashan Reed of The Athletic about the death of George Floyd. "We've had a lot of open communication with our team, our players and our coaches," Norvell said, according to Reed. "I went back and forth individually with every player this weekend. And that was something that was important to me because this is a heartbreaking time in our country…. I told these guys just how grateful I am to be a part of this journey with them because they are the future. We've got an incredible group of men that I get a chance to work with as players and coaches. I'm honored to have the opportunity to help make a difference."

Several Florida State players took issue with Norvell's claims on social media, the most vocal of which was defensive tackle Marvin Wilson, a leader on the team. Wilson tweeted that Norvell's statement "is a lie" and that the players would "not be working out until further notice." "Man this did not happen mane," Wilson's tweet said. "We got a generated text that was sent to everybody. There was no one on one talk between us and coach. This is a lie and me and my teammates as a whole are outraged and we will not be working out until further notice." - Arizona Republic

  06/01/20 - Jarrian JonesrSr/2024, Florida State, 6-0, 190 (DS#28 CB) + More +

The Jarrian Jones saga keeps unfolding. Jones, a defensive back from Brandon, has had an eventful offseason. After recording 12 tackles and two pass breakups as a freshman last season at Mississippi State, Jones decided to enter the transfer portal on May 19. Four days later, Jones announced in a tweet that he'd be transferring across Mississippi, professing his commitment to Ole Miss. Now, two weeks after his commitment to Ole Miss, Jones has changed course again. Jones posted a tweet early Monday morning announcing his commitment to Florida State. Once it's official, Jones will join fellow former Mississippi State Bulldog Fabien Lovett at Florida State. Lovett also elected to transfer this offseason and officially joined on with Florida State on May 30. - The Clarion Ledger

Former Mississippi State defensive tackle Fabien Lovett made it official Friday that he was headed to Florida State. Lovett announced via Twitter that he had signed with the Seminoles. He announced that he was entering the NCAA Transfer Portal on April 3 in the days following a controversial tweet by Mississippi State coach Mike Leach. Lovett announced that he was committed to Florida State on April 13. It appeared that the Mississippi native had reopened his recruitment after his initial Florida State announcement. FSU coach Mike Norvell even alluded to it Friday night, saying "He's Baaaaaaackkk" in a tweet about a "big time addition in the trenches coming to Doak Campbell Stadium." Norvell didn't mention Lovett by name, but in any event the 6-foot-3 defensive tackle ultimately chose FSU. Lovett finished his redshirt freshman season with 19 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and a sack. - The Clarion Ledger

  05/22/20 - Jarrian JonesrSr/2024, Florida State, 6-0, 190 (DS#28 CB) + More +

Jarrian Jones isn't going too much farther from home. The rising sophomore cornerback announced via Twitter Saturday morning he is transferring from Mississippi State to Ole Miss. He tweeted a photo of himself in an Ole Miss uniform. Jones confirmed with the Clarion Ledger his decision to continue his college football career in Oxford. Jones entered the transfer portal earlier this week. He tweeted that he had conversations with multiple schools, including Oregon. Joe Moorhead, the former Mississippi State head coach who recruited Jones, is now the offensive coordinator at Oregon.

Ultimately, though, Jones chose to stay in the Magnolia State and play for another familiar face. Cornerbacks coach Terrell Buckley moved from Mississippi State to Ole Miss when Moorhead was fired in January. Buckley heavily recruited Jones out of Northwest Rankin high school. It seemed the future of Mississippi State's secondary was set with Jones and a collection of other young defensive backs learning from Buckley. - The Clarion Ledger

  05/20/20 - McKenzie MiltonrSr/2022, Florida State, 5-11, 194 (DS#29 QB) + More +

UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton tested negative for coronavirus after a health scare, according to an ESPN report that examined the challenges colleges will face testing athletes. Milton, who has remained in Orlando and has worked out on the UCF campus while going through rehabilitation for a catastrophic knee injury, told ESPN he got a sore throat and a fever about a week ago. He stayed home instead of doing his daily workouts and went to UCF's drive-up COVID-19 testing site. The next day, Milton learned his test was negative and he resumed workouts after his fever and other symptoms subsided. "I would have felt bad if I was around people and was sick and the possibility of our physical therapy having to get quarantined because of me," Milton told ESPN.

UCF is among the schools expected to resume workouts after the NCAA cleared schools to conduct voluntary workouts when the activities are allowed under local and state rules. Milton said the Knights who are recovering from injuries and were exempt from stay-at-home orders get their temperatures checked when they arrive on campus daily, wear masks during weight room workouts, and maintain distance between each other. In addition, all equipment is sanitized after it is used. He also has worked out on outdoor fields with current and former UCF football players, wowing fans by dropping deep passes to receivers. None of the players were wearing masks in the videos shared on social media. - Orlando Sentinel

  05/20/20 - Jarrian JonesrSr/2024, Florida State, 6-0, 190 (DS#28 CB) + More +

Mississippi State might lose another potential starter on defense. Rising sophomore cornerback Jarrian Jones entered the NCAA transfer portal Tuesday. 247Sports first reported the news. The Clarion Ledger confirmed Jones' decision to enter the portal with Jones himself. Jones and fellow freshman Martin Emerson Jr. played plenty of meaningful snaps at corner after senior Maurice Smitherman went down with an ACL injury and junior Cameron Dantzler battled injuries of his own. Mississippi State freshmen cornerback Jarrian Jones is determined to be a regular contributor for the Bulldogs during his career in maroon and white. Jones recorded 12 total tackles, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery in 2019. He and Emerson were set to be stalwarts on the edges for Mississippi State for many years to come. Now the Bulldogs will have to rely on other key returners and incoming freshmen. - The Clarion Ledger

  05/11/20 - Jordan WilsonrSr/2022, Florida State, 6-4, 246 (DS#75 TE) + More +

Florida State has landed UCLA graduate transfer tight end Jordan Wilson, who will help the Seminoles bolster their depth at the position. "I'll never question why God put me on the path that he did and I'm forever grateful for the doors he opened along the way. #Committed #OneTribe," Wilson posted on Twitter Saturday night. Wilson is a graduate transfer who played 34 games during three seasons at UCLA. The former three-star prospect out of Nashville, Tenn., recorded 25 catches for 244 yards and two touchdowns during his career with the Bruins. He is expected to be eligible to play the 2020 season. Wilson will help offset the loss of tight ends Tre' McKitty, who transferred, and Gabe Nabers, who graduated. - Orlando Sentinel

  05/07/20 - McKenzie MiltonrSr/2022, Florida State, 5-11, 194 (DS#29 QB) + More +

Injured UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton said Thursday there is a 50-50 chance he'll be able to play football again during the 2020 season. With his teammates scattered across the country in their homes waiting out the coronavirus outbreak, Milton is still in Orlando rehabbing his knee with the UCF athletic training staff. His progress captured has been highlighted during social media posts, including time he has spent wearing a mask and working in the team's weight room with teammate Brandon Moore, who is recovering from a torn ACL he suffered during the Knights' 2019 season opener.

"It's still my goal and I go to see my surgeon in June and I'll know a lot at that point," Milton said of his push to play during the upcoming football season. "The reason I set that goal is because I want to approach my rehab every day with the idea that I would be ready to go for fall camp and be a go for North Carolina in our first game. If I'm not approaching it that way then I feel like I would be missing days in therapy and not working as hard as I can. "That's why I set that goal and I hope to reach that and if I don't, it is what it is and I'll just keep knocking block-by-block." - Orlando Sentinel

"Just a blessing to be in this position and a blessing to be a part of such a great organization," Akers said following the choice. "... Wherever the team needs me to be, whatever they need me to do, that's what I'll do." Akers said the Rams showed interest in him early on in the process. "I Face Timed the Rams a few times throughout this process," he added. "We had a few good talks, a lot of good talks." - Orlando Sentinel

Fabien Lovett has a new home. The former Mississippi State defensive lineman put his name in the transfer portal at the beginning of the month after head coach Mike Leach tweeted an image that many people, including Lovett and his father, found offensive. Just over a week later, Lovett has landed at Florida State. The 6-foot-3, 330-pound defensive tackle announced his decision to become a Seminole via Twitter. Schools such as Ole Miss, Tennessee, Georgia Tech and Oregon all reached out to Lovett, an Olive Branch native, in the days after he entered the portal.   04/12/20 - Meiko DotsonrSr/2022, Florida State, 5-10, 183 (DS#131 CB) + More +

FAU's single-season interception record holder will be making a return to the Atlantic Coast Conference. Cornerback Meiko Dotson announced Saturday evening that he's transferring to Florida State for his final collegiate season after entering the transfer portal in January. Dotson, a Mainland High School alum, spent his first two collegiate seasons in the ACC with Georgia Tech. During the 2019 season, Dotson recorded a program-record nine interceptions, which was tied with San Diego State cornerback Luq Barcoo for the most in the nation.

Dotson redshirted his freshman season with the Yellow Jackets in 2015 before playing two games and recording two tackles in 2016. He played at Garden City Community College in 2017 before transferring to FAU, redshirting the 2018 season after suffering an injury before being the Owls' lone defensive selection to the conference's first-team in 2019. Dotson is FAU's third significant loss from its cornerback unit since last season. James Pierre declared for the 2020 NFL draft, while starting cornerback Chris Tooley has used up all four years of his eligibility. - Sun-Sentinel

McKenzie Milton continues rehabbing the career-threatening knee injury he suffered in the regular-season finale in 2018. Milton's progress is stunning considering the severity of the injury. He even participated in spring practice - albeit on a limited basis - before workouts were halted by the coronavirus outbreak. A return date is still up in the air. - Orlando Sentinel

Mississippi State coach Mike Leach is expected to participate in "listening sessions" with student and community groups and tour the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum after he tweeted an image of a noose last week. Mississippi State athletic director John Cohen released a statement Tuesday that said, "No matter the context, for many Americans the image of a noose is never appropriate and that's particularly true in the South and in Mississippi. Mississippi State University was disappointed in the use of such an image in a tweet by Coach Mike Leach."

Leach, who was hired away from Washington State in January, apologized on social media last week for posting a tweet that drew criticism from Bulldogs players and an assistant professor at the school before it was deleted. The image Leach tweeted depicted an elderly woman knitting, with the caption: "After 2 weeks of quarantine with her husband, Gertrude decided to knit him a scarf...", but the picture showed her knitting a noose with the hangman's knot already tied. Cohen's statement added, "The university is confident that Coach Leach is moving quickly and sincerely past this unintended misstep and will provide the leadership for our student athletes and excitement for our football program that our fans deserve and that our students and alumni will be proud to support." - AP College Football

When Mississippi State football player Fabien Lovett saw Mike Leach's tweet with an image that joked about a woman knitting a noose for her husband, the defensive lineman sent a screenshot to his dad. Lovett was upset and even publicly reacted to the tweet Wednesday night on his Twitter account, typing "wtf." The next day, the father and son discussed the coach's meme and the player's future in Starkville. Lovett next talked with members of the Mississippi State coaching staff. On Friday, Lovett's father, Abdual Lovett, had decided his son should leave the program and the 6-foot-4, 310-pound athlete agreed he was done at Mississippi State.

Lovett filled out the necessary paperwork through the university and announced his decision to transfer on Twitter. The father said he questioned Leach's ability to lead because he says "whatever whenever." "I didn't feel comfortable with my son being down there with a guy like that from a leadership standpoint - that you can just throw anything out there," Abdual told the Clarion Ledger on Saturday. "I feel if he can do it, the kids are going to feel like they can do it." The Mississippi State athletic department declined to comment on the situation and the comments of Lovett's father. - The Clarion Ledger

Fabien Lovett is a college football free agent. The rising sophomore announced Friday he entered the NCAA transfer portal after Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach tweeted out a controversial meme. Several schools quickly reached out to Lovett, who said he has three years of eligibility remaining. Programs such as Ole Miss, Tennessee, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Oregon have contacted Lovett and his family, according to his father, Abdual Lovett. Tennessee and Florida State have stood out early in the recruiting process, Abdual Lovett said.

Fabien Lovett has a prior relationship with a familiar name on the Oregon coaching staff. Joe Moorhead, the former Mississippi State head coach, recruited Lovett to Starkville. Moorhead is now the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Oregon. "He had a great respect for Moorhead," Abdual Lovett said. "So did I." The defensive tackle, listed at 6-foot-4 and 310 pounds, appeared in two games and redshirted in 2018. In 2019, he finished with 19 total tackles and a sack for the Bulldogs. - The Clarion Ledger
