No college football player has to play this year, in the midst of a pandemic. But Kansas receiver Andrew Parchment wanted to anyway. With his eyes set on a future in the NFL following what will be a truncated 10-game season at KU, Parchment wasn't interested in opting out. He hopes to use his final collegiate games to prove his personal goals are more than just talk. "I want to play at the next level, and I see myself as that type of player. For me, I just felt like I haven't done enough, I haven't gained enough respect, whether that's in the conference or in the country," Parchment explained earlier this week, when asked during a video conference with reporters about his decision to play this year.

Those who followed KU in 2019 obviously know Parchment well. The 6-foot-2 wideout delivered a breakthrough campaign in his first year with the program. The former Northern Illinois and Iowa Central Community College player emerged as KU's most productive passing target after joining the Jayhawks as a transfer. Parchment's potential became clear in his junior year debut, as he hauled in eight passes for 121 yards in the first game of the Les Miles era, a 24-17 win over Indiana State. It was Parchment's first of four 100-yard receiving games. He ended up leading KU in receptions (65) and receiving yards (831), and his seven touchdowns ranked second by one to Stephon Robinson Jr.'s eight. Parchment's 75-yard touchdown versus West Virginia was one of many highlight moments for the receiver from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who was only considered a two-star junior college prospect by Rivals in the Class of 2019. - Lawrence Journal World

If Lawrence were to miss time, Clemson's backup quarterbacks have played 43 snaps combined. "We've gotta have guys ready to play," Swinney said. "We've got to get Hunter Helms ready as well. He was a preferred walk-on that came in here. So we've got to develop as much depth at that position and get as much experience at that position as we can." Uiagalelei is the biggest name of the group as a former five-star recruit and the top-ranked pro-style quarterback in the country. But Phommachanh has been in Clemson's system for a year and has improved by leaps and bounds from when he arrived on campus, by all accounts.

"Obviously Taisun got to play four games last year but still needs a lot of experience. D.J.'s just getting here. So we definitely hope to play as many of those guys as we can as often as we can," Swinney said. "I do know who our starter's going to be. If we get the opportunity to see who goes out there next then we'll see who ole coach Street runs out there." Uiagalelei has received praise since arriving on campus with Swinney saying in the spring that his arm talent "makes Trevor look kind of normal." - The State

Parchment came out of nowhere - well, Iowa Central Community College, but close enough - to post the best season by a Jayhawk wide receiver in a decade. The 6-2, 180-pounder out of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., put himself on the map with a 65-catch, 831-yard, seven-touchdown debut season for KU, serving as Stanley's most reliable weapon. Parchment exploded onto the scene with three 100-plus-yard receiving efforts in the Jayhawks' first four contests, and his seven-catch, 109-yard output helped KU earn its win over Texas Tech, the team's lone Big 12 victory. Uncertainty at quarterback may hinder Parchment's chances at a repeat performance, but keep an eye on this: With fellow seniors Stephon Robinson and Kwamie Lassiter in the fold, as well as touted true freshmen Lawrence Arnold and Luke Grimm, the Jayhawks may boast their deepest wide receiving corps since the days of Dezmon Briscoe and Kerry Meier. - Topeka Capital Journal

Joshua Kaindoh has been through so much during his time at Florida State. Since arriving in Tallahassee as a heralded five-star defensive-end prospect out of IMG Academy in 2017, Kaindoh has seen coaching changes and injuries limit his progress with the Seminoles. He appeared in 25 games during his first two seasons, but he suffered a season-ending injury in the third game of the 2019 campaign. On Saturday, the 6-foot-7, 285-pound redshirt junior hoisted a sledgehammer into the air and released all of his frustration and hard work down onto a square rock inscribed with the names of the Seminoles and their coaches.

"When we finish fall camp, we have a symbolic rock that every player signs, that every coach signs and we get a chance to choose a guy who's demonstrated throughout camp the proper mindset and the proper approach in all aspects," new FSU coach Mike Norvell explained. "This year, Josh Kaindoh was the guy that broke the rock." Kaindoh appreciated the honor. "What it signified to me is that the hard work is paying off," Kaindoh said. "Everything is about the work that we're [putting in] … it goes to show that the hard work doesn't go unnoticed. "I came here in 2017 and things haven't obviously gone as I've wanted them to, but all I can do is keep working and hope all that hard work is going to pay off." - Orlando Sentinel

  09/05/20 - McKenzie MiltonrSr/2022, Florida State, 5-11, 194 (DS#29 QB) + More +

UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton won't be ready for the Knights' opener against Georgia Tech, but the veteran signal-caller continues to take major strides in his recovery from a devastating knee injury he suffered in 2018. Coach Josh Heupel confirmed Milton won't be available for the team's road contest against the Yellow Jackets on Saturday, Sept. 19, while giving an update on the progress of his quarterback.

"I don't think Week 1 he'll be ready to go," Heupel said during a videoconference Tuesday. "It's remarkable what he's done. You look at from the initial injury, where he's able to keep his leg, to being able to live a normal life to now - becoming an elite athlete. The guy continues to defy the odds and push through any obstacle that comes in front of him and there's been a bunch." Milton spent 21 months recovering from a horrific knee injury he suffered during the Knights' 2018 regular-season finale against USF at Raymond James Stadium. He had emergency surgery at Tampa General Hospital to repair damaged nerves and restore blood flow to his lower right leg. The injury nearly forced doctors to amputate his leg. - Orlando Sentinel

The message for Florida State's running backs this fall has been a simple one: own the ball. "We always have to own the ball," FSU freshman Ja'Khi Douglas said. "In our meeting room, we all have a ball with us to make sure we're owning the ball." The Seminoles have most recently built a solid ground game, producing a 1,000-yard rusher during six of the past seven seasons, including last year when Cam Akers rushed for 1,144 yards. But a new coaching staff and a new offensive philosophy could provide more opportunities for the FSU backfield.

Four of the eight tailbacks arrived this year as part of FSU's 2020 recruiting class, led by four-star prospect Lawrance Toafili and three-star back La'Damian Webb. The group also includes a pair of multi-faceted players in Corey Wren and Douglas. "I tell you, Lawrance Toafili has been remarkable this last week," Norvell said after practice Monday. "You can tell he is gaining some confidence in what we're asking him to do. He's had explosive runs just about every day. He's done something good with the ball in his hands and now we're just continuing to help develop him on how to play without the ball in his hands." Added Sheffield about Toafili, "He's just young, but he's going to be the real deal." - Orlando Sentinel

Florida State receivers coach Ron Dugans isn't asking his players to do anything he hasn't done himself. As a standout receiver with the Seminoles, Dugans was a member of a team that won 55 games between 1995-99, capped with a national championship in 1999. His 1,520 receiving yards ranks him among the top 35 FSU receivers on the school's career list. Dugans knows how to fight to make plays at a high level and expects the same effort from this year's group of FSU receivers. "I want these guys to compete like I used to compete," Dugans said. "These guys are taking to that and helping each other out and competing their butts off and wanting to be the best and wanting to get better daily."

FSU returns three starters from last season, led by junior wideout Tamorrion Terry, who became the first Seminole to earn more than 1,000 receiving yards in a season since Rashad Greene in 2014. His 20.3 yards per reception career average is the highest in school history. For Terry, the decision to return for another year rather than opt out was simple. "I came back for a reason and that reason was not to be average," Terry said at the start of fall camp earlier this month. "I want to be great. I came back and I told coach [Mike] Norvell the reason I came back was to win ball games and help the team out, and I know we can turn this around. So why opt-out?" - Orlando Sentinel

One of the most intriguing battles for Clemson entering fall camp was the backup quarterback job, and with the Tigers' season-opener at Wake Forest less than three weeks away, it remains an ongoing competition. Redshirt freshman Taisun Phommachanh and true freshman D.J. Uiagalelei spent the past couple of weeks competing to see who will be the first guy off the bench behind Heisman favorite Trevor Lawrence. "Man, he's made huge strides in a year. Very talented," Swinney said. "They're different. They're similar in some regards and they're different as well. D.J., he's as advertised. A very, very gifted player. He's 250 pounds. He's just not a typical freshman coming in here. He has just really picked things up quickly. It's a heck of a competition and a great battle. They're both doing some really good things."

Uiagalelei was rated as the No. 10 overall player in the country and the top pro-style QB for the class of 2020. Swinney said of Uiagalelei this spring that, "Sometimes he just kind of makes Trevor look normal with his ability to rip that football...never really seen a guy quite like him." Uiagalelei picked up where he left off when Clemson started fall camp. "He's so talented...super strong arm. He just is a good player, good instincts, even though he hasn't quite figured out all of the offense yet because he just got here," Lawrence said. "But he just is a good natural player, can run, make people miss, obviously he can escape, -do everything you really need from the quarterback position." - The State

College athletes would get a cut of the millions of dollars generated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association under proposed legislation announced Thursday by a group of Democratic senators. The "College Athletes Bill of Rights" would allow players to earn money from marketing their names, Images and likenesses, and give them a share of the $15 billion intercollegiate sports industry. The proposal also would require standards for health and safety, take steps to ensure that athletes get a college education and are able to graduate from their schools, help athletes pay their medical bills and other expenses incurred from sports-related injuries as well as any illnesses from the coronavirus, and remove penalties for athletes wishing to transfer to another school.

It also provides for a panel of athletes, administrators and others to set rules for college sports. The proposal came as some colleges have abandoned plans to play intercollegiate sports this fall due to the pandemic. The Big Ten, Pac-12, and Big East all have canceled their fall seasons. The senators, who include Cory Booker, a former Stanford University football player, and Kamala Harris, running for vice president this fall, said they formally would introduce legislation later this year. - Star Ledger

Marvin Wilson believes he has some unfinished work to do at Florida State and the senior defensive tackle isn't going to let concerns over the coronavirus pandemic prevent him from finishing his football career with the Seminoles. "I didn't come back to sit out or opt-out to prepare for the league [NFL]," Wilson said during a videoconference call Thursday. "I think that's taking the easy way out. For me personally, I came back because I have work to do here in Tallahassee and I'm going to get it done." Ten players have announced they will forgo the upcoming season, including Miami defensive end Gregory Rousseau, Minnesota receiver Rashod Bateman and Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons. Many of them are voicing concerns about the ability to safely play football during the coronavirus pandemic.

For Wilson, it comes down to his passion for playing football. "My mom and my brother and other siblings know how I feel about this sport and know how I feel about this university," said Wilson, who was named to preseason watch lists for the Outland and Nagurski trophies and the Maxwell Award. "They know, once I put my mind to something, I'm going to do it. "...I came too far to just turn back around. I've put so much work into this program, I've put so much emphasis in these young guys' lives and I feel like it would be a form of quitting, in my opinion, just to opt out at this moment." - Orlando Sentinel
