Less than a year after transferring to Kentucky from Florida State, former four-star recruit Xavier Peters is leaving Lexington. The West Chester, Ohio native originally committed to Kentucky in July 2017 while at Lakota West High School, but he flipped his commitment to Florida State before signing day in 2018. He spent one season at Florida State, appearing in two games while redshirting, before transferring to Kentucky.

A UK spokeswoman confirmed Peters is transferring. According to a report from JUCO Football Ace, a Twitter account dedicated to covering junior-college football, Peters will transfer to Garden City Community College. Since Peters said he was transferring to be closer to his young son in Cincinnati, the NCAA granted Peters a waiver to play at UK last season at in September. Peters played in three games after being declared eligible, recording one tackle. - Courier Journal

Former Miami Hurricanes tight end Michael Irvin II will be staying in South Florida for his redshirt senior season. Irvin, the son of the UM legend and NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver by the same name, announced on Monday night that Florida Atlantic will be his transfer destination after deciding he would move on from Miami in March. Irivn, a St. Thomas Aquinas High grad like his father, heads to the Owls as a graduate transfer, immediately eligible for the upcoming season, FAU's first under new coach Willie Taggart. Irvin played in all 13 games for the Hurricanes last season, making three starts, but had only two catches for 33 yards. He missed all of the 2018 regular season recovering from a knee injury but played in the Pinstripe Bowl loss to Wisconsin.

Irvin had his best season at UM as a sophomore in 2017, when he had nine receptions for 78 yards. He played sparingly as a freshman in 2016 on special teams. His time with the Hurricanes ended in the one week Miami held spring football practices before the coronavirus pandemic put a stop to all college athletic activities. Not present for UM's first two spring practices, Irvin announced he was entering the transfer portal by the third. "I have had a riddled college football career so far which is why I have made this decision very carefully," Irvin wrote on Twitter on Monday night. "With that being said, I have learned a lot and would not change my experience and the relationships I have made throughout the process. I'm thankful for everything that I have been able to do. - Sun-Sentinel

FAU football players will be able to experience a gradual sense of normalcy in the coming weeks. Brian White, Florida Atlantic's vice president and director of athletics, announced Wednesday that starting June 8, players will be allowed to return to campus as a part of the university's expected phased-in approach that's expected to have the entire team back by late June. The NCAA Division I Council voted to allow voluntary on-campus athletic activities last week in football and men's and women's basketball starting June 1, ending the moratorium for all on-campus athletic activities due to the novel coronavirus pandemic that was set to expire Sunday.

"Our number one priority, as always, is the safety of our student-athletes staff and community," White said. "Over the last several weeks, our staff has worked together with university leadership, university and local health officials and Conference USA to develop this plan for a safe return to campus for the student-athletes, coaches and staff." White suspended all practices until further notice March 13 while Conference USA canceled all spring sports competitions on March 16. C-USA appears to be allowing each school to make the decision dependent upon its state or local government restrictions. - Sun-Sentinel

Consider FAU head coach Willie Taggart a supporter of potential shakeup that could be making its way into college sports. The NCAA Board of Governors announced Wednesday that it supports a proposal that would allow college student-athletes to earn money off their names and likenesses, a change that Taggart supported during a recent interview with ESPN West Palm (106.3 FM). "They are changes that are probably needed and that'll be good for our student-athletes," Taggart said during the interview. Among the changes that were listed in the NCAA's news release was that collegiate student-athletes would be allowed to reference their sport and school in advertisements, but not with school logos or branding. The proposal would also allow for collegiate student-athletes to sign endorsement contracts and others deals with third-party institutions, as long the schools they attend weren't involved in them being paid.

Taggart said collegiate student-athletes should be rewarded for their name and likenesses, adding that it'll be the responsibility of himself, other coaches and administrators to make sure the student-athletes are educated and informed. "It goes back to a teaching process and we're going to teach our young people throughout this whole ordeal because it's going to be different for them," Taggart said. "We just can't throw it out there and say, "OK, you're just going to do this.' They're young people, we can't forget that. And we have to teach and help them understand what's going on as we present these things they can get now." - Sun-Sentinel

Just two days after being selected in the fourth round of the NFL Draft, former Florida Atlantic tight end Harrison Bryant was named Palm Beach County's Amateur Athlete of the Year, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced Monday. Bryant was a fourth-round pick of the Cleveland Browns on Saturday and earned the John Mackey award, given to the nation's top tight end, after amassing 1,004 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. He is the first player from a Group of Five conference to win the award. Bryant joins an illustrious list of winners that that includes former FAU star Devin Singletary, now a running back with the Buffalo Bills, and Rusty Smith, a former quarterback for the Tennessee Titans. - Palm Beach Post

Harrison Bryant was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the fourth round at pick No. 115 on Saturday in the 2020 NFL draft. D'Joun Smith (2015, No. 65 overall), Rob Housler (2011, No. 69), and Devin Singletary (2019, No. 74) and Trey Hendrickson (2017, No. 103) are the former Owls who have been drafted higher than Bryant, who's the 10th FAU player to be selected in the draft. Bryant, the 2019 John Mackey Award winner and first non-Power Five player to receive the honor, was one of the top tight end prospects in this year's draft class after being one of the lowest-ranked prospects in FAU's 2016 recruiting class. He was the sixth tight end selected in the draft after recording 65 receptions for 1,004 yards and seven touchdowns during the 2019 season. Bryant finished his four-year career with the Owls with 148 receptions for 2,137 yards and 16 touchdowns, being named first-team All-Conference USA twice and second-team once. - Sun-Sentinel

Harrison Bryant didn't plan for his 2020 NFL draft preparation to take him back to Georgia so soon. Originally, he expected to spend the month leading up to the draft training at FAU, where he made a name for himself nationally. But the novel coronavirus pandemic, and the ensuing closure of the Owls' facilities, took the tight end back to where his football career began. Bryant, a Gray, Ga. native, has spent the past few weeks staying at a lake house in central Georgia. He's been working out and running routes at his old high school, John Milledge Academy, with the help of Cody Mahler, the football team's strength coach and special teams coordinator.

Outside of the adjustment in switching training locations and not being able to have in-person visits, Bryant said the pre-draft process hasn't changed too much for him. He was able to meet with teams in person during the Senior Bowl in January and NFL combine in February. He has since been meeting with teams through Zoom video teleconferencing. Bryant said he wasn't surprised when FAU's Pro Day, which was scheduled for April 2, was nixed when the NFL canceled all in-person visits with draft prospects in March. But he empathized with his former teammates who didn't have the opportunities to showcase their talents through multiple scouting opportunities like he had. "All I was going to do at Pro Day anyway was run routes and catch balls," Bryant said. "Knowing that all the others guys - Brandon [Walton], Rashad [Smith] - and all of them, didn't get to go to the combine and get the opportunity to showcase their talents really sucks." - Sun-Sentinel

University of Miami tight end Michael Irvin II, the son of former Hurricanes great and Pro Football Hall of fame member Michael Irvin, is transferring for his final season of college football. UM confirmed the news to the Miami Herald on Thursday morning. Irvin II is no longer on the UM roster. It's hard to blame him for wanting to transfer. Ahead of him is top tight end Brevin Jordan, a possible future NFL first-rounder, as well as extremely talented backup Will Mallory. Irvin was hardly going to get real playing time in his only season left in college. Irvin, a redshirt senior, started three games last season. His career numbers: 11 catches for 111 yards in 31 games. He played in 13 games and had two catches in 2019 for 33 yards. - Miami Herald

Chris Robison passed for 305 yards and two touchdowns and Florida Atlantic scored two touchdowns in a 24-second span late in the first half to take control on the way to beating SMU 52-28 in the Boca Raton Bowl on Saturday night. It was FAU's first game since Lane Kiffin left the Owls to take over at Ole Miss — and the Conference USA champions, playing on their home field, didn't miss a beat under interim coach Glenn Spencer. James Charles ran for two touchdowns for FAU (11-3), which tied a school record for wins in a season and improved to 4-0 in bowl games. The first of Charles' scores came with a minute left in the first half to break a 14-14 tie, Robison found Brandon Robinson for another touchdown 24 seconds later after an SMU interception and the Owls were off and running.

Rashad Smith ran a fumble back for a score in the third quarter to help FAU blow the game open. Robison completed 27 of 37 passes for FAU. Shane Buchele completed 27 for 47 passes for 303 yards for SMU (10-3). The Mustangs were seeking their first bowl win since 2012, this game coming a day after they gave coach Sonny Dykes - who has gone 15-11 in his first two seasons with the team, including the 2017 Frisco Bowl loss - a contract extension. Xavier Jones had a pair of rushing touchdowns for SMU. James Proche, who entered as the NCAA's active career leader in receptions and receiving yards, had nine catches - giving him 301 for his career - for 86 yards and a score for the Mustangs. - AP College Football
