FAU may not have had a player selected in the 2021 NFL draft, but that didn't stop a couple of former Owls from finding an NFL home. A few hours after the draft ended Saturday evening, running back BJ Emmons signed with Seattle Seahawks while linebacker Leighton McCarthy signed with the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as undrafted free agents. Emmons, who was the No. 4 running back prospect in the nation out of high school and played at Alabama in 2016, transferred to FAU and redshirted the 2018 season after spending 2017 at Hutchinson Community College (Hutchinson, Kan.). - Sun-Sentinel

There were 12 players at the Florida Atlantic Pro Day Tuesday morning, but all eyes seemed to be on running back BJ Emmons. During his workouts, he ran an unofficial 4.6 40-yard dash, and leapt 10.5 feet in the long jump. He also caught a handful of passes from former FAU quarterback De'Andre Johnson, and Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers scouts approached Emmons at the end of his workouts. "They asked me tough questions, but it's better to tell the truth and not beat around the bush," Emmons told reporters. "Honesty is best when you want someone to accept you into their organization." In two seasons with the Owls, Emmons rushed for 353 yards on 88 carries and seven touchdowns. Injuries played a role in his college career, however, as he only played nine games for the Owls. A consensus four-star recruit coming out of high school, Emmons played at Alabama as a freshman, rushing for 173 yards on 35 carries. Emmons had the opportunity to return for another season with the Owls after the NCAA granted student-athletes an extra year of eligibility, but chose to pursue a professional career. - Palm Beach Post

One of the FAU Owls' top running backs from the last two seasons won't return to the program in 2021. BJ Emmons announced on social media Sunday evening that he's going to forego his final season of eligibility with the hopes of making an NFL roster. Emmons, who was the No. 4 running back prospect in the nation out of high school and played at Alabama in 2016, transferred to FAU and redshirted the 2018 season after spending 2017 at Hutchinson Community College (Hutchinson, Kan.). Emmons - who missed FAU's last three games of 2020 - saw the field even less this past season, rushing for 116 yards and 1 touchdown on 37 attempts in four games. - Sun-Sentinel

Backup quarterback Javion Posey scored the game's only touchdown on an 11-yard run with 2:27 remaining and Florida Atlantic beat Western Kentucky 10-6 on Saturday night. Posey, a redshirt freshman, replaced starter Nick Tronti to begin FAU's first possession of the fourth quarter and, after five consecutive runs by the Owls, had his first collegiate pass - and only attempt of the game - intercepted by Western Kentucky's Kyle Bailey. But the Hilltoppers went three-and-out and then Posey led a 12-play, 75-yard drive capped by his TD run that gave Florida Atlantic a 10-6 lead. He had five carries for 33 yards - including a 15-yard run on third-and-3 from near midfield to keep the drive alive.

Posey finished with nine carries for 60 yards. Tronti was 7-of-16 passing for 106 yards. BJ Emmons added 56 yards rushing on 14 carries for FAU (3-1, 3-1 Conference USA). Vladimir Rivas kicked a 40-yard field goal to open the scoring with nearly nine minutes left in the third quarter. Brayden Narveson tied it with a 32-yarder about six minutes later and then made a 49-yarder to give WKU its first lead with 8:09 to play. Tyrrell Pigrome, a graduate transfer from Maryland, was 19-of-39 passing for 163 yards for the Hilltoppers. Gaej Walker had 78 yards rushing on 78 carries. Western Kentucky (2-6, 1-3) has lost back-to-back games for the third time this season. - AP College Football

FAU football coach Willie Taggart may need more time before naming a starting quarterback for the 2020 season, but it appears one Owl stood out above the rest during their first scrimmage. Redshirt juniors Nick Tronti and Justin Agner, redshirt freshman Javion Posey and true freshman Willie Taggart Jr. are in the midst of a competition to see who'll replace Chris Robison as FAU's starting quarterback due to Robison no longer being on the team. "If I had to pick someone that probably stood out the most," Taggart said, "it would be Posey." Posey was highlighted multiple times in the information about the situational scrimmage released by Florida Atlantic, including a 65-yard touchdown pass graduate transfer wide receiver Aaron Young.

Taggart also commended the play of the running backs, especially senior tailback BJ Emmons, who recorded three scores. Emmons was recently named to the Reese's Senior Bowl Top 250. "Our running backs have been showing what they can do all training camp," Taggart said. "We're really loaded back there. BJ had a really good scrimmage. I've been really impressed with how he's been practicing." - Sun-Sentinel

2021 SENIOR BOWL WATCH LIST: BJ Emmons, Florida Atlantic,...After joining the Owls in January of 2019, Emmons carried his first Owl football for a gain of one yard in the season opener at Ohio State. He then caught a pass for a setback of two yards, but more importantly Emmons' season was also set back by a broken ankle. Everyone thought the Morganton, North Carolina native, an Athlon Sports and Phil Steele's Magazine preseason C-USA Third Team honoree, would lose the year to the injury, but he had a different mindset. Ten games (and 84 days) later, he led the Owls with 10 carries for 53 yards and two scores in a victory over UTSA, a game that secured home field advantage for the 2019 Conference USA Championship. He tallied 51 carries on the year, averaging 4.6 yards per carry, and scored six times. Emmons tallied 71 yards on 11 carries versus Southern Miss, led nine Owl ballcarriers in carries in the C-USA title game win, and led the Owls with 17 carries and 72 yards in the 2019 Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl win over SMU. That marked the Owls' second Boca Raton Bowl win in three seasons. - Florida Atlantic Football

FAU football players will be able to experience a gradual sense of normalcy in the coming weeks. Brian White, Florida Atlantic's vice president and director of athletics, announced Wednesday that starting June 8, players will be allowed to return to campus as a part of the university's expected phased-in approach that's expected to have the entire team back by late June. The NCAA Division I Council voted to allow voluntary on-campus athletic activities last week in football and men's and women's basketball starting June 1, ending the moratorium for all on-campus athletic activities due to the novel coronavirus pandemic that was set to expire Sunday.

"Our number one priority, as always, is the safety of our student-athletes staff and community," White said. "Over the last several weeks, our staff has worked together with university leadership, university and local health officials and Conference USA to develop this plan for a safe return to campus for the student-athletes, coaches and staff." White suspended all practices until further notice March 13 while Conference USA canceled all spring sports competitions on March 16. C-USA appears to be allowing each school to make the decision dependent upon its state or local government restrictions. - Sun-Sentinel

Willie Taggart has another chance, and Florida Atlantic's search for Lane Kiffin's replacement is over. Taggart was hired by FAU on Wednesday, a week before the early signing day and only four days after Kiffin left the Owls for Mississippi. "I'm looking forward to long-term success here," Taggart said in a statement distributed by the university Wednesday night. "I think our players and the university deserve that commitment." The terms of the agreement were not immediately disclosed by FAU.

Kiffin was 26-13 in three seasons at FAU, winning two Conference USA championships and breathing new life into a moribund program before leaving last week to take over at Mississippi. His hiring in 2016 was a splashy one, after past stints as a head coach - at Tennessee and with the NFL's Oakland Raiders - didn't work out as he hoped. Taggart could use a similar resume revival. He's been to one bowl game in 10 seasons as a head coach, with a 56-62 record. Florida State fired him in November after a 27-10 loss to Miami. - AP College Football

Lane Kiffin and Florida Atlantic are Conference USA champions again. And now all eyes are on Kiffin's next move. Chris Robison threw for 267 yards and four touchdowns, BJ Emmons ran for a pair of scores and Florida Atlantic rolled past UAB 49-6 on Saturday for the Owls' second Conference USA title in Kiffin's three seasons as coach. Malcolm Davidson rushed for 128 yards and Deangelo Antoine had five catches for 112 yards for the Owls (10-3), who had no trouble with the league's top-ranked defense.

UAB (9-4) allowed a season-high in points and a season-high 585 yards. It was a matchup of the last two Conference USA champions - FAU in 2017, UAB in 2018 - and it was never in doubt. So FAU got to celebrate a title. The other schools in Conference USA get to celebrate as well, with Kiffin expected to become the next coach at Ole Miss. He's gone 20-6 in league games with the Owls, including a pair of romps in conference title games. And if he was distracted in any way by all the buzz surrounding his next move - Ole Miss tweeted out cryptic references to him Saturday afternoon, and FAU football highlights were shown on the jumbotron at the Rebels' basketball game - Kiffin hid it all well. - AP College Football
