Willie Taggart has another chance, and Florida Atlantic's search for Lane Kiffin's replacement is over. Taggart was hired by FAU on Wednesday, a week before the early signing day and only four days after Kiffin left the Owls for Mississippi. "I'm looking forward to long-term success here," Taggart said in a statement distributed by the university Wednesday night. "I think our players and the university deserve that commitment." The terms of the agreement were not immediately disclosed by FAU.

Kiffin was 26-13 in three seasons at FAU, winning two Conference USA championships and breathing new life into a moribund program before leaving last week to take over at Mississippi. His hiring in 2016 was a splashy one, after past stints as a head coach - at Tennessee and with the NFL's Oakland Raiders - didn't work out as he hoped. Taggart could use a similar resume revival. He's been to one bowl game in 10 seasons as a head coach, with a 56-62 record. Florida State fired him in November after a 27-10 loss to Miami. - AP College Football

2019 JOHN MACKEY AWARD WINNER: Harrison Bryant of Florida Atlantic University football was voted on Wednesday as the winner of the 2019 John Mackey Award, as the most outstanding tight end in college football. Bryant is the first Owl in the 19-year history of the FAU football program to receive a national individual accolade, and will be presented with the trophy on Thursday during The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show in Atlanta (which can be viewed live on ESPNU beginning at 6 p.m.). The senior and Gray, Georgia, native leads all tight ends nationwide with 65 catches and 1,004 receiving yards, and ranks fourth in FBS with seven touchdowns (all coming in his last six games). Not only is Bryant the first Owl to earn such a prestigious national honor, he is the first non-Power Five player to ever receive the Mackey Award, which will be presented Thursday for the 20th time. "I'm extremely honored to represent FAU in receiving such a prestigious award," said Bryant. "This wouldn't have been possible without my teammates, coaches, and all of the support staff at FAU." - Florida Atlantic Football

  12/07/19 - BJ EmmonsSr/2021, Florida Atlantic, 5-11, 215 (DS#37 RB) + More +

Lane Kiffin and Florida Atlantic are Conference USA champions again. And now all eyes are on Kiffin's next move. Chris Robison threw for 267 yards and four touchdowns, BJ Emmons ran for a pair of scores and Florida Atlantic rolled past UAB 49-6 on Saturday for the Owls' second Conference USA title in Kiffin's three seasons as coach. Malcolm Davidson rushed for 128 yards and Deangelo Antoine had five catches for 112 yards for the Owls (10-3), who had no trouble with the league's top-ranked defense.

UAB (9-4) allowed a season-high in points and a season-high 585 yards. It was a matchup of the last two Conference USA champions - FAU in 2017, UAB in 2018 - and it was never in doubt. So FAU got to celebrate a title. The other schools in Conference USA get to celebrate as well, with Kiffin expected to become the next coach at Ole Miss. He's gone 20-6 in league games with the Owls, including a pair of romps in conference title games. And if he was distracted in any way by all the buzz surrounding his next move - Ole Miss tweeted out cryptic references to him Saturday afternoon, and FAU football highlights were shown on the jumbotron at the Rebels' basketball game - Kiffin hid it all well. - AP College Football

Golden Eagles (7-5, 5-3) scored a field goal and a touchdown before the break, closing to 17-10 at halftime. Akileis Leroy picked off Jack Abraham on the Golden Eagles' first play of the second half and returned it 24 yards to the Southern Miss 3, setting up Emmons' touchdown run and a 24-10 lead for the Owls. Abraham threw for 182 yards and ran for a score for the Golden Eagles (7-5, 5-3). He was intercepted four times. - Florida Atlantic/AP College Football

2019 JOHN MACKEY AWARD FINALIST: Harrison Bryant (SR, Florida Atlantic),...Bryant, a senior from Gray, Georgia, leads all of the nation's tight ends with 58 receptions and 890 yards receiving. Those totals not only lead all Conference USA tight ends, but ranks second among all league passcatchers in yards, while slotting fifth in receptions. This past weekend, in the Owls' 40-26 win over UTSA, he had a career day, recording 10 receptions for a new personal standard of 192 yards. The victory gave FAU first place outright in the C-USA East Division, and should the Owls win Saturday, would mean a clinch of the division crown and homefield advantage in the C-USA title game. - Florida Atlantic Football
