  10/01/20 - *Kyle PittsJr/2021, Florida + More +

After the display Kyle Pitts put on in the win over Ole Miss last Saturday, everyone seems to agree that he is a tight end with wide receiver skills and speed. Many are just finding that out. The UF coaches knew almost right away after he arrived on campus two years ago that he was going to be a potential mismatch for opposing defensive backs and linebackers. "It was in training camp his freshman year," offensive coordinator Brian Johnson said. "It was just a matter of him kind of growing into the position. He was actually (wide receiver) Van (Jefferson's) backup our first year in 2018. We played him a little bit more outside just because he had so much talent - a huge catch radius, he's fast, he can get in and out of breaks. "And then he kind of grew into what we saw in terms of him being an elite tight end. It was fairly early on. He was a guy that as a young player, as a freshman, he played behind Van and really had a chance to learn from him. We put him in the game, he made some plays. He continued to develop and grow, and now he's in a position where he's one of the best players in America."

The Kyle-to-Kyle connection (Trask to Pitts) produced eight receptions for 170 yards and four touchdowns in the 51-35 victory over the Rebels. It looks like this has a chance to become a big deal in college football this season. Pitts said there is no secret to it. "I think our chemistry comes from preparation," he said. "Times during the week where we start practicing running routes, maybe I drop the ball or he didn't like how it looks so we just run it again. And in the offseason, did a lot of talking together, a lot of routes, a lot of work with the receiver corps and tight ends, the whole offense. I feel like our connection is good. It's grown. Each week we put more trust in what we do." - Gainesville Sun

Stewart Reese, the graduate transfer from Mississippi State, had a successful debut Saturday, starting at offensive guard. "Great," Mullen said of Reese's performance. "I think having missed the offseason hurt Stew a little bit. I expect him to continue to get better. I saw a couple ups and downs. One thing I think he knows having played for us before is that I have pretty high standards and expectations. That's not going to shock him. So, overall, he graded a champion and I thought he played pretty well." - Gainesville Sun

  09/28/20 - *Kyle PittsJr/2021, Florida + More +

Kyle Pitts' big day in Florida's 51-35 win over Mississippi was the kind rarely seen by a tight end. His eight catches for 170 yards and four touchdowns made him only the third FBS tight end since at least 1996 with at least 150 receiving yards and four touchdowns in a game. The others were Stanford's Colby Parkinson in 2018 and Kentucky's James Whalen Jr. in 1999. Pitts' four receiving TDs were the most by a Florida player since Ike Hilliard had the same number against Tennessee in 1995. His receiving yards total was the highest by a Gator since Demarcus Robinson's 216 against Kentucky in 2014. - AP College Football

Cameron Carroll scored a career-high three of Tulane's seven rushing touchdowns and added a 16-yard TD reception, and the Green Wave beat Southern Miss 66-24 on Saturday. Carroll finished with a career-best 163 yards on 15 carries. Freshman Michael Pratt came off the bench and finished 8-of-18 passing for 142 yards and two touchdowns and added seven carries for 40 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown for Tulane (2-1). Southern Miss jumped to a 14-0 lead fewer than five minutes into the game but Tyjae Spears scored on runs of 2 and 15 yards to tie it early in the second quarter. After Jack Abraham hit Naricuss Driver for a 61-yard touchdown to put the Golden Eagles back in front, Pratt hit Carroll to make it 21-all and then Merek Glover's 41-yard field goal with 1:41 left in the first half gave Tulane the lead for good. Abraham completed 23 of 38 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns with one interception for Southern Miss (0-3). He connected with Jason Brownlee for an 88-yard touchdown that made it 14-0 with 10:31 left in the first quarter. Keon Howard, a transfer from Southern Miss, started the game at quarterback for the Green Wave but was replaced by Pratt in the first quarter. Howard was 1-of-3 passing for zero yards. - Tulane/AP College Football

  09/26/20 - Kyle TraskrSr/2021, Florida + More +

Kyle Pitts caught four of Kyle Trask's six touchdown passes and No. 5 Florida spoiled the head coaching debut of Mississippi's Lane Kiffin with a 51-35 victory Saturday. Trask completed 30 of 42 passes for 416 yards including touchdown passes of 1, 16, 71 and 17 yards to Pitts. The star tight end had 170 yards receiving. Trask directed four consecutive touchdown drives that spanned the second and third quarters to build a 41-14 lead for the Gators (1-0 Southeastern Conference).

Kiffin, the former Tennessee and USC head coach who came to Ole Miss from FAU, had the Rebels' offense humming with Matt Corral at quarterback. Corral completed 22 of 31 passes for 395 yards and three touchdowns passes, two to Dontario Drummond. But they couldn't stop the Gators. Ole Miss (0-1) tied it at 14 midway through the second quarter before yielding to the Trask-led Florida outburst. The teams combined for 1,255 yards of total offense, including 642 by the Gators. Trevon Grimes and Kedarius Toney had touchdown receptions of 22 and 16 yards respectively, for Florida. Jerrion Ealy had two touchdown runs for the Rebels. - AP College Football

He missed the second half of the 2017 season with an injured knee. He missed most of the 2018 season with an injured foot. Then he came back last season and still wasn't 100 percent and wasn't much of a factor. It's easy to see how redshirt junior Malik Davis has become Florida's forgotten back. He gets it. And he's OK with it because he plans on changing that title this season with his play on the field. "That's fine, I love it. Let them forget, I like it," Davis said. "I'm definitely determined. When people go down with injuries, people tend to forget. That's how sports go. I'm ready to refresh their memory."

UF coach Dan Mullen said earlier in camp that Davis has regained the form he had back in 2017, when he emerged as the Gators' best back as a true freshman before injuring his knee in the Georgia game. Davis said he's a hundred percent for the first time since prior to that injury and has gained 10 pounds of muscle (up to 205 now) after spending a full summer in Nick Savage's strength and conditioning program. "The main thing coming back from injuries that I had is just being able to come back and being comfortable, and trusting that you're OK," he said. "Now that I got a whole offseason with Coach Savage...this is my first real offseason with him not being injured...I definitely feel more comfortable and stronger. "Now that I'm 100 percent comfortable and healthy, it's easy for me to go out there to make those plays like they know I can." - Gainesville Sun

Starting left tackle Stone Forsythe has a very good idea what Georgia transfer and former five-star recruit Brenton Cox is going to bring to the defense this season. He goes against him every day in practice. "We go at it every day," he said. "He's one of those speed rushers that can change it up. He's a great pass rusher. He has a bunch of different moves. "It's a little different than what we've been seeing in the past couple years with Jabari Zuniga and Jonathan Greenard and stuff like that. He kind of reminds me a little bit of Jachai Polite, just with that speed and the get off." - Gainesville Sun

Former Penn State receiver Justin Shorter is eligible to play for No. 8 Florida this season. The Gators confirmed Friday that the NCAA granted Shorter's request to waive a one-year transfer rule, meaning he doesn't have to sit out the 2020 season. Scholarship players in the Football Bowl Subdivision are required to sit out one year after changing schools, but the rule can be set aside because of a "specific, extraordinary circumstance." Shorter left Penn State last November and entered the NCAA transfer portal. He landed at Florida three months later. He announced on Instagram late Thursday that his waiver had been granted. Shorter caught 15 passes for 157 yards in two partial seasons in Happy Valley. He was ranked as the nation's top receiver coming out of South Brunswick High School in Monmouth Junction, New Jersey, in 2018. - AP College Football

  09/12/20 - Kyle TraskrSr/2021, Florida + More +

Even though Kyle Trask was just "OK" in Monday night's scrimmage, Florida coach Dan Mullen said his starting quarterback has clearly made strides in his development since last season. "He was OK. I don't think yesterday was his best day," Mullen said Tuesday. "But he has improved (his footwork, accuracy and decision making). You're always going to have little off days here and there. I thought he was a little crisper in scrimmage one. "We gave him a little bit more work yesterday than we did in scrimmage one as we continue to build up and get ready to go. But I have seen him improve - his decision making, his leadership, and we're putting a lot more on him right now. He has really improved the speed of how he decides things and just, obviously, which is a big one, his knowledge of the game."

Mullen said Trask has almost become like another coach, sitting in on game plan meetings and offering his input about what plays he thinks will and won't work. "He comes and spends extra time in game plan meetings," Mullen said. "He wants to sit in knowing we're meeting. He wants to sit around. As a grad student, it helps he has a little more time on his hands. He's always around the office. He'll have input just because of his experience and he's played and he knows he has input on the game plan. "On top of that he has a lot of control at the line of scrimmage. He has a lot of freedom to call his own calls, call plays and check in to plays at the line of scrimmage." - Times Union

Back in January, when he revealed he would not be entering the NFL draft, Kadarius Toney said the main reason he was returning to Florida for his senior season was to try and develop into a more complete wide receiver. That mission is being accomplished, apparently. "One of the things I'm really pleased with him is that what I've seen from him is just a real development as a wide receiver," UF coach Dan Mullen said. "He's a guy who was a high school quarterback, started to learn the position. Everybody knows he's a playmaker. He's a great playmaker with the ball in his hands. He's taken such a huge step forward in becoming a wide receiver now."

Toney is one of the Gators' most dynamic playmakers. But in his first three seasons, he was not what you would call a traditional wide receiver. He made most of his plays with his legs - as a wildcat quarterback, on jet sweeps and wide receiver screens. Now, it appears he's put himself in a position to start making plays in the downfield passing game. "Not just kind of a get-it-to guy, which he'll still continue to be a get-it-to guy for us," Mullen said. "But every down being a wide receiver, he's taken some huge steps forward. I'm really excited about that. That's what you want from those guys. It's one thing, this utility athlete, get-it-go guy, but when you can become disciplined and a great technician at your position, that takes you to a whole other level." - Gainesville Sun
