About an hour after Grimes announced his departure, fellow receiver Kadarius Toney announced that he was skipping the Cotton Bowl to prepare for the NFL Draft.   Florida senior wide receiver Kadarius Toney touched the ball receiving, rushing and returning punts and scored three times in the Gators' 41-17 home win over Missouri. Toney caught touchdown passes on back-to-back plays from scrimmage in the second quarter, an 18-yard score and a 30-yard score. The first score erased a Mizzou lead, the second proved to be the game-winner. He lined up as wildcat quarterback and ran for a 16-yard score in the third quarter. - Savannah Morning News

Florida coach Dan Mullen showed up after his team's testy victory against Missouri dressed as Darth Vader. Mullen insisted it was the only Halloween costume in the facility, not a conscious decision to play a villain. Nonetheless, it may have been the perfect role given Mullen's past few weeks. Kadarius Toney scored three times, Kyle Trask became the first player in school history with four touchdown passes in four consecutive games and the 10th-ranked Gators returned from a three-week layoff to handle Missouri 41-17 on Saturday night in the Swamp. The Gators' easiest win of the season came after a COVID-19 outbreak forced the Southeastern Conference to postpone two of their games. It also included a benches-clearing scuffle at halftime that involved both coaches. Several players threw punches during the melee, but just three were ejected. The conference could hand down more punishments following a review. It could be costly for Florida (3-1), which plays rival and fifth-ranked Georgia next week in nearby Jacksonville. The game is likely to decide the winner of the East Division. - Florida/AP College Football

Much of the discussion about Kadarius Toney's return to Florida this season centered around his need to improve as an all-around wide receiver. Saturday's showing against the Gamecocks furthered the notion Toney's been doing just that since returning to Gainesville. Toney hauled in a team-high six receptions for a career-high 86 yards in Florida's 38-24 victory, eclipsing his previous UF-best of 72 yards on Nov. 3, 2018 against Missouri. His 57-yard receiving touchdown, which saw Toney dash past several South Carolina defenders into the end zone, was Toney's second-longest reception to date behind last year's 66-yard touchdown against Miami. - Gainesville Sun

Back in January, when he revealed he would not be entering the NFL draft, Kadarius Toney said the main reason he was returning to Florida for his senior season was to try and develop into a more complete wide receiver. That mission is being accomplished, apparently. "One of the things I'm really pleased with him is that what I've seen from him is just a real development as a wide receiver," UF coach Dan Mullen said. "He's a guy who was a high school quarterback, started to learn the position. Everybody knows he's a playmaker. He's a great playmaker with the ball in his hands. He's taken such a huge step forward in becoming a wide receiver now."

Toney is one of the Gators' most dynamic playmakers. But in his first three seasons, he was not what you would call a traditional wide receiver. He made most of his plays with his legs - as a wildcat quarterback, on jet sweeps and wide receiver screens. Now, it appears he's put himself in a position to start making plays in the downfield passing game. "Not just kind of a get-it-to guy, which he'll still continue to be a get-it-to guy for us," Mullen said. "But every down being a wide receiver, he's taken some huge steps forward. I'm really excited about that. That's what you want from those guys. It's one thing, this utility athlete, get-it-go guy, but when you can become disciplined and a great technician at your position, that takes you to a whole other level." - Gainesville Sun

Kyle Pitts, a tight end/wide receiver combo, became quarterback Kyle Trask's go-to receiver when Trask became the starter last season in mid-September. But the 6-foot-6 Pitts won't be Trask's only big target. Wide receiver Trevon Grimes is 6-5. He should improve significantly on last season's 33 catches. Everyone always is talking about Kadarius Toney's athleticism, and the former high school quarterback has as much big-play potential as anyone on Florida's offense. But Toney has been hampered by injuries and has only 50 catches in three seasons. Since the Gators lost their two most productive wide receivers from last season, that should create more opportunities for Jacob Copeland. - Knoxville News Sentinel

If there is a 2020 college football season, some of the big questions heading in for the Florida Gators will be concerning the four senior receivers from last year's team who are no longer here. How do you replace their production? Will they be missed? Well, we already have an answer to the second question. Van Jefferson, Freddie Swain, Tyrie Cleveland and Josh Hammond are already being missed, maybe not by Gator Nation yet, but by the receivers they've left behind in Gainesville. So, with those four seniors gone, will there be a dropoff at wide receiver in 2020?

"Not at all," Hammond said. The three redshirt freshmen, along with Wells, a senior, are ready to step in and step up, Hammond said. "They're prepared," he said. "They've all been put in situations for them to understand what's next for them. I think Coach G (Billy Gonzales) did a really good job of preparing them for what's about to come nest. "They all did a good job learning from us. None of those guys ever didn't listen to us or questioned us. All those guys came in with open ears and we welcomed them with open arms. We tried to help them as much as we could. "They all listened. They were really good listeners. It leaves no doubt in my mind that the ball will keep rolling the way it's been rolling. All those guys are going to be fine." - Gainesville Sun

Sometimes Florida wide receiver Kadarius Toney even stuns himself with some of his myriad manic move combinations. Take the play he made against Florida State last November. After taking a little scoop pass from quarterback Kyle Trask in the backfield, he appeared hemmed in by two defenders on the edge. But he made one of those ankle-breaking cuts of his that not only made the two defenders miss, it made them collide, injuring one. From there, Toney went into full joystick mode, cutting back, darting around defenders, making others miss before he was finally brought down after a 47-yard gain that started off looking like a five-yard loss. "The most memorable play that I've made," he said. "Everything happened so fast. I didn't even know what I was doing. Everything was just so quick and spontaneous. It was like, 'Wow.' I surprise myself with different moves. "When I see that (on tape), it's mind blowing that I really can do that. I'm just as surprised as the fans, overwhelmed in a way. But I've been playing the same way since I was knee-high. I've just always been that guy."

That guy is an explosive, dynamic, game-changing offensive weapon. That's why Florida coach Dan Mullen is always talking about making sure Toney gets his share of touches in games. That doesn't always translate into him actually getting them. As a result, his three-year UF highlight reel is breathtaking but relatively brief. For his career, he has 49 receptions for 575 yards and three touchdowns and has rushed for 458 yards. This past season his numbers were down - 10 catches for 194 yards and a TD and 59 yards rushing - but mainly because he missed six games in the middle of the season with an injured shoulder/back. He expects his numbers to grow exponentially in 2020. Not just because he's 100-percent healthy again, but because more opportunities are going to be there with the Gators losing those four senior wide receivers from last season - Van Jefferson, Freddie Swain, Tyrie Cleveland and Josh Hammond. - Gainesville Sun

No. 7 Florida expects to have elusive receiver Kadarius Toney back for its game against 10th-ranked Georgia next week. Coach Dan Mullen said Wednesday that Toney, who has missed six consecutive games because of a left shoulder injury, will return against the Bulldogs on Nov. 2. "He's a playmaker," Mullen said on the Southeastern Conference's weekly coaches' call. "He's an explosive guy when he gets the ball in his hands, so having that back ... Obviously the more playmakers you can put on the field, the better you are, the harder you are to defend, the more explosive you can be. So I think it will be great to get him back out there." Toney took a hit in the first quarter against Tennessee-Martin and left the field in pain. He returned to practice this week. The junior has 43 career receptions for 484 yards and two touchdowns as well as 39 carries for 363 yards and a score. The Gators (7-1, 4-1 SEC) also expect to have their top two pass-rushers back. Jon Greenard and Jabari Zuniga missed last week's game at South Carolina with ankle injuries. - AP College Football

No. 11 Florida could be without its most dynamic playmaker when it opens Southeastern Conference play at Kentucky. The Gators lost elusive receiver Kadarius Toney during a 45-0 victory over lower-division Tennessee-Martin on Saturday night. Toney took a hit on his left arm late in the first quarter, walked off the field in pain and eventually headed to the locker room for tests. Coach Dan Mullen said Toney's injury will be "checked out a little bit more," not exactly promising news for Florida.

The Gators also lost speedy cornerback CJ Henderson in the first half against the Skyhawks (1-1), but Mullen said he has a "slight ankle sprain." Henderson tweaked his left ankle while covering a receiver in the second quarter, limped into the locker room and later returned to the sideline wearing a walking boot and using crutches. Florida barely missed either of them against UT Martin, which fell to 0-10 against SEC teams and failed to cover the 44 1/2-point spread. But the Gators know being without either standout in league play would be a crushing blow. "It's got to crank up about 10 notches getting into SEC play, especially going on the road," Mullen said. - AP College Football

Having watched tape of the elusive and dynamic Percy Harvin, Florida wide receiver Kadarius Toney has a good understanding how high the standard is he'll be expected to live up to now that he's wearing Harvin's old jersey number, No. 1. He's good with that, comfortable with the expectation. Not only does he plan to match the Harvin standard, he's going to try and exceed it, he said after Saturday's practice. "He's an explosive player," Toney said of Harvin. "I want to try and be more explosive. But I see the caliber, the type of player he was. That's intriguing." Toney normally doesn't like being compared to other players. But in the case of Harvin, he's OK with it. "A person like that, you can't really complain about that," Toney said. "That's a high-caliber person. The things that he did for the Gators and in the NFL, that was tremendous. To be in shoes like that, that's big."

Playing slot receiver and also lining up at times as a wildcat quarterback, Toney averaged a whopping 10.9 yards a touch last season. "He's an athlete, playmaker. He just does what he does," quarterback Feleipe Franks said. "He's definitely a big part of our offense, definitely is one of our best playmakers. "When he does touch the ball, you see on Saturday, he just makes something electric happen every time." - Gainesville Sun

2019 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Kadarius Toney, Florida,...Toney played in 12 games in 2018 and saw time at wide receiver and as the team's wildcat quarterback. The Mobile, Ala. native finished the season with 629 all-purpose yards, totaling 25 receptions for 260 receiving yards and one touchdown, 21 rushes for 240 yards, six kickoff returns for 133 yards, one punt return and a 20-yard touchdown pass as he completed one pass on a trick play.

Overall for the season, Toney recorded 12 explosive plays between rushing, receiving, passing and returns and notched his season-long rushing attempt of 34 yards in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl against Michigan. Toney enters his junior season with a total of 34 rush attempts for 360 yards, 40 receptions for 412 yards and one touchdown. - Florida Football
