Memphis football defensive back Ladarian Paulk became the latest starter to leave the program when he announced Sunday that he'll enter the transfer portal in May. The NCAA's spring transfer portal window opens from May 1-15. Paulk is not listed on the team's spring roster, so he's eligible to remain a student at Memphis before his departure.

Paulk played in nine games with eight starts at safety and had 28 tackles with one pass deflection in his lone season with the Tigers. He transferred before last season from Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College and has two years of eligibility remaining. With Paulk gone, the Tigers' secondary loses another player with experience. Sylvonta Oliver and Quindell Johnson both exhausted their eligibility after last season. The Tigers do return two-year starting cornerback Greg Rubin and senior cornerback Davion Ross, who started six games last season and was an All-AAC honorable mention. - Memphis commercial Appeal

FIU's top player, wide receiver Tyrese Chambers, was injured and held to just two catches and 15 yards. MacIntyre had no immediate update on his status. Starting safety C.J. Christian, however, is out for the year due to a shoulder injury. "That's a big loss for us," MacIntyre said. In addition, FIU's offensive line is beat up, particularly with an injury on Saturday to Lyndell Hudson Jr. "It's always tough," MacIntyre said of the injuries, "but the next man up gets a shot to show if he can play." - Miami Herald

FIU football player Luke Knox, who appeared in 23 games at Mississippi before joining the Panthers and was the brother of Buffalo Bills tight end Dawson Knox, has died, the university said Thursday. Luke Knox died Wednesday evening, school officials said. The cause was not revealed, though the university said police do not suspect foul play. Knox, who studied business, was 22. "Words cannot express the heartfelt sorrow we feel because of the passing of our teammate and friend, Luke Knox," FIU coach Mike MacIntyre wrote on social media. "I had the honor of coaching Luke at Ole Miss and at FIU. While I admired his passion for football, his genuine love for his family and teammates is what I will always remember." FIU players were told of Knox's death late Wednesday. Thursday's practice was canceled, and grief counselors were brought in to meet with the team and others from the university community.   From one to 10, the level of excitement new FIU football coach Mike MacIntyre is feeling for his first fall camp with the Panthers breaks the scale. "It's way above 10," MacIntyre said. The Panthers, who will have their first fall practice on August 1, have added six players since spring practice ended in April. The Panthers also got starting safety Dorian Hall off the injury list. That leaves FIU with 83 scholarship players. MacIntyre wants to keep two scholarships in his back pocket just in case desirable players become available. Luke Knox, a 6-3, 240-pound outside linebacker, spent the past four years at Ole Miss, making two starts in 2019. He was switched to tight end last year, but MacIntyre wants him on defense. His older brother is Buffalo Bills starting tight end Dawson Knox. - Miami Herald
