  08/18/20 - Feleipe FranksrSr/2021, Arkansas, 6-7, 234 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Arkansas opened preseason camp Monday with quarterback Feleipe Franks leading the first-team offense. Franks, the senior graduate transfer from Florida, hasn't been named the Razorbacks' starting quarterback for the Sept. 26 opener against Georgia, but all indications pointed toward him being the front runner in the lead up to Monday's first practice. It was Franks' first practice as a Razorback. He transferred to Arkansas for the start of the spring semester in January, but the team wasn't able to go through spring drills. Franks' only on-field work in Fayetteville had been walkthroughs in the weeks leading up to the start of the preseason. "Feleipe's got a very, very strong arm," Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman said following Monday's practice. "I thought he was really accurate today. He played like what you certainly hope a veteran quarterback would play." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/15/20 - Feleipe FranksrSr/2021, Arkansas, 6-7, 234 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Arkansas first-year offensive coordinator Kendal Briles had to wait and wait some more before getting an up-close-and-personal look at Feleipe Franks throwing the football. To this point, approaching the start of preseason practice Monday, Briles has not been disappointed by what he's seen from the Florida graduate transfer. Watching Franks on film, Briles figured he would have a live arm. "He does," Briles said Friday during a Zoom conference with reporters. "The thing I've been impressed with is how he's been able to get the ball out of his hand and just really consistent with all his throws. "Not a lot of wobble in the ball."

Briles and Arkansas coach Sam Pittman have been adamant that Franks, the projected starter, is not going to simply be handed the starting job. But he certainly does have a leg up given his experience with the Gators. Franks started 24 of the 27 games he appeared in at Florida and threw for more than 4,500 yards and 38 touchdowns. Briles expects him to be sharp and precise when the Razorbacks hit the field next week. "Hopefully Feleipe will be what we think he is," Briles said. "There's still going to be competition, but I would say it's going to be his job to lose." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/13/20 - Luke JonesrSr/2023, Arkansas, 6-5, 327 (DS#999 OT) + More +

Arkansas offensive lineman Luke Jones was put on scholarship on Tuesday, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette has learned. Jones, a 6-5, 294-pounder from Pulaski Academy, was originally committed to Arkansas before flipping to Notre Dame in the Class of 2018. Jones spent one year with the Fighting Irish before transferring to the Razorbacks. He sat out last season per NCAA transfer rules. With Jones serving as a walk-on last season, the Razorbacks were able to sign full classes in 2019 and 2020. He is expected to compete for a spot on the two deep at either guard or center this season. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/08/20 - Dorian GeraldrSr/2023, Arkansas, 6-2, 265 (DS#999 DE) + More +

Nearly one year ago, Dorian Gerald's health was in question and his football career was uncertain as he laid in a bed at a local hospital. In the second quarter of Arkansas' season opener against Portland State last August, a puzzling injury abruptly ended Gerald's year. Two days after the game, former Razorbacks coach Chad Morris announced the junior college transfer strained an artery in his neck. Morris, who labeled the injury "very strange," added he did not know what the future would hold for Gerald other than he would be on blood thinner and undergo testing over the next several months. It was far too early to say whether he would be able to play football again.

Gerald, though, was deadset on returning to the field, writing in a tweet that he would be "back next year better than ever." Next year has arrived. And based on what he has been seen in offseason conditioning and team walkthroughs in recent weeks, Arkansas football coach Sam Pittman is a believer in the defensive end. "He is a very vocal guy and has been working his tail off, so I've been really pleased with him," Pittman said of Gerald on Thursday during a Zoom conference with reporters. "And I will be when we put pads on, but we haven't yet. But I promise I will be. "He's too talented for us not to be." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/07/20 - Myron CunninghamrSr/2022, Arkansas, 6-6, 322 (DS#26 OT) + More +

In losing the offensive line coach he committed to play for at Arkansas, Myron Cunningham gained two coaches who will oversee his position. Brad Davis is the Razorbacks' offensive line coach to replace the departed Dustin Fry, but first-year head coach Sam Pittman will also add his considerable expertise gained over more than two decades coaching college lines. "I feel like their knowledge of the game is just very, very strong," Cunningham said. "It helps when you have a head coach who is such a highly recognized offensive line guy. Then you have an offensive line coach who is almost like the second best (behind Pittman). It just really helps, especially when you're trying to go to that next level. They can teach you so many things. They've taught the whole offense things we haven't known."

Cunningham said the coaches are trying to make sure the Razorbacks don't "have a repeat of last year" when they were often pushed around, especially in pass coverage. Arkansas allowed 19 sacks a year ago, including 15 in conference games. Ole Miss, Kentucky, Auburn and LSU all recorded three sacks against the Razorbacks to go along with several other quarterback hurries. "I think the motivation is to prove not only to everyone else, but prove to ourselves because we know we're better than that," Cunningham said of last season. "I think this year we'll go around with a chip on our shoulder to prove to ourselves…who we are and what we're capable of. I think that's our goal." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Six Arkansas football players were named to Phil Steele's preseason All-SEC teams on Tuesday. Senior running back Rakeem Boyd highlights the group as a second-team selection, and sophomore receiver Treylon Burks received third-team recognition. Senior center Ty Clary, junior linebacker Bumper Pool, senior receiver De'Vion Warren and senior long snapper Jordan Silver were listed on the fourth team. Boyd, Warren and Silver landed on Steele's fourth team last season.

Boyd, who last season rushed 184 times for 1,133 yards and 8 touchdowns and caught 19 passes for 160 yards, considered entering the NFL Draft, but decided to return to Arkansas after meeting with Pittman and the new coaching staff. "He's working extremely hard and obviously he knows what this senior season holds for him and for the football team," Pittman said. "The better he is the better our football team is going to be as well and the people around him. "I've been really, really excited for him and I think he's going to have a heck of a football season."

Boyd had touchdown runs last season of 74 yards at Kentucky and 76 and 86 yards against Western Kentucky. He was the first Razorback to have two rushing touchdowns of 76 ore more yards in the same season since Felix Jones in 2006. "I'm expecting an incredible season," Arkansas redshirt junior cornerback Montaric Brown said about Boyd. "Rakeem is the best running back in the conference to me, so I'm expecting great things for him." Brown said speed is what impresses him most about Boyd. "A lot of people don't think Rakeem is that fast, but Rakeem is very fast," Brown said. "It will surprise you and sneak up on you." - Northwest Arkansas Times
