  09/05/20 - Beaux LimmerrSr/2024, Arkansas, 6-5, 302 (DS#6 C) + More +

Arkansas defensive tackle Jonathan Marshall still contends he is the strongest player on the Razorbacks' roster. But the senior said a younger player - one he lines up across from often - is giving him a run for his money for that title. Marshall is referencing redshirt freshman offensive lineman Beaux Limmer. "Me and him are standing toe-to-toe in the weight room," Marshall said Monday during a Zoom conference with reporters. "Beaux Limmer, he's good. He's very good. We have gone against each other (in practices). "He's gotten me a few plays, I've gotten him a few plays. It goes back and forth." Entering the second full-scale scrimmage of the preseason Friday, Limmer appears to have established himself as the Razorbacks' frontrunner at right guard. As of now, coaches also feel most confident in Myron Cunningham at left tackle and sophomore Ricky Stromberg at center.

The strength Marshall referenced is one of the reasons Limmer has been able to push to the front of the pack at his position. Arkansas offensive coordinator Kendal Briles said Limmer has been consistent through the opening two-and-a-half weeks of camp. He knows what he is going to get from Limmer each day at practice in drills and live work. "He's got good weight. He's around 305," Briles said Wednesday via Zoom. "But when you see him move, he really plays fast. And then Beaux will strike you, and he'll finish you. He's a really tough kid. "I'm glad he's on our team. He's done a really nice job." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  09/04/20 - Julius CoatesrSr/2023, Arkansas, 6-5, 289 (DS#999 DE) + More +

Cliff Collins, East Mississippi's defensive coordinator, isn't surprised to hear the praise for Coates. "I think Julius is going to do pretty good in the SEC," said Collins, who played linebacker and safety at Ole Miss in 2001 and 2002. "He's athletic and he's big and he's fast. He's a smart kid, too. "You add all that together, if he does what he's supposed to do, he could be a high NFL Draft pick. I know they've got some good coaches up there at Arkanas that are going to develop him, and he's going to take the coaching." Among the other players Collins has coached at East Mississippi is Darel Middelton, a senior defensive end at Tennessee. Middleton, 6-7, 305 pounds, played in all 13 games with six starts for the Vols last season when he made 26 tackles.

"When we looked at film of Julius, he reminded me of Darel," Collins said. "Darel is a long, athletic kid like Julius, and they both played on offense before we switched them to defense." Coates, who is from Rockford, Ill., played tight end at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa as a redshirt freshman in 2019 and had six catches for 62 yards. "They had Julius flanked out as a tight end [at Ellsworth], and we thought, 'This kid should be on defense,' " Collins said. "He was too big to be flanked out. Then we saw him run, and the rest is history. "We told him, 'Come and play defensive end for us, and you'll get a scholarship wherever you want to go." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  09/03/20 - Rakeem BoydSr/2021, Arkansas, 5-11, 213 (DS#19 RB) + More +

Boyd's presence this season is a huge bonus for the Razorbacks, as many thought he would declare early for the NFL Draft. His production a year ago included touchdown runs of 59 yards against Colorado State, 74 yards at Kentucky, and 76 and 86 yards against Western Kentucky, when he was given just 8 carries. Boyd's 6.2 yards per carry were higher than Hill (5.6), Harris (5.9), Texas A&M's Isaiah Spiller (5.4) and Auburn's Boobie Whitlow (4.9). It was basically on par with Georgia's D'Andre Swift (6.21), and a bit behind LSU's Clyde Edwards-Helaire (6.58). Boyd said he came back to Arkansas to work on his pass catching and pass protection, and to help Arkansas football win more games in its climb back.

He is in very limited full-contact work in camp, which has given him a good eye for scouting the talent behind him. "Man, A'Montae Spivey has impressed me," Boyd said early in camp. "I think he runs literally just like me. The kid has some of my ways, but he's young, so he's still learning. Once he gets it, it's there. "You've got Oglesby, [who] is really fast. He can hit the hole. You've got Dominique, who is big and fast. He has good vision. Really good vision. He reminds me of myself with the vision he's got." Boyd said the more features a back brings -- such as pass catching, pass blocking and knowing all the nuances of the offense -- help him stay on the field longer. "You have all those packages as a running back, you get to do more things," he said. "You get to be a first-down, second-down and third-down back. All of those guys are becoming every-down backs. I'm still trying to become one. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/30/20 - Hudson HenryrSr/2024, Arkansas, 6-5, 254 (DS#999 TE) + More +

Arkansas coach Sam Pittman is certain about one thing when it comes to his tight ends: He doesn't have a clue who will start in Week 1 against Georgia. Following the departures of players such as Cheyenne O'Grady, Grayson Gunter and Chase Harrell, the Razorbacks are a young and largely inexperienced bunch at the position entering 2020. Redshirt freshman Hudson Henry figures to be the starter if healthy, but even he has not been full-go for all of Arkansas' preseason practices through two weeks. Aside from Henry, the room is a bit of a mystery. And the starting job is very much up for grabs.

"To be honest with you, we're trying to find two really good tight ends," Pittman said Friday after the team's first scrimmage of the fall. "If we can get three and four, that'd be great. I'll know a little bit more (about a potential starter) after I watch this film." The tight ends group includes a senior in Blake Kern, but the Lamar native does not have a catch to his name since arriving on campus in 2016. And after him sit four players - Nathan Bax, Collin Sutherland, Jonas Higson, Blayne Toll - in their first season with the program. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/30/20 - *Treylon BurksJr/2022, Arkansas, 6-2, 224 (DS#4 WR) + More +

University of Arkansas cornerback Montaric Brown has gotten a good look at some of the nation's best college receivers the last few years. He thinks at least one of the Razorbacks' own wideouts can stack up with the best in the land, not only in the college game, but beyond. Treylon Burks is just a sophomore for the Razorbacks, but the 6-3, 232-pounder showed speed, strong physical traits, great hands and a tackle-breaking affinity last year. Asked which Arkansas wideout was toughest to cover, Brown said, "I'd say Treylon Burks. He's a big-frame guy. "I call him Julio Jones, because he has a big frame. He can do anything. He has speed, power, and he can just run by you. Even though he's like 230, he can run by you. He's got all the weapons. He's built like an NFL receiver. He can do anything."

Jones, the former Alabama star, is a 6-3, 220 pounder who has 797 catches for 12,125 yards and 57 touchdowns in 10 years with the Atlanta Falcons, already Hall of Fame-like numbers. Burks, a product of Warren High School, couldn't help but grin when a reporter brought up Brown's comparison. "Busta, that's my guy," Burks said. "We compete every day, and he calls me 'Julio.' That's my favorite receiver." Burks said he worked on his speed, slimming down a bit, running more precise routes and understanding defenses better during the offseason. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/27/20 - Jerry JacobsrSr/2021, Arkansas, 5-10, 208 (DS#40 CB) + More +

Only one member of Arkansas' secondary has played against season-opening foe Georgia even though he hasn't played a game for the Razorbacks yet. Cornerback Jerry Jacobs (5-11, 206 pounds), a graduate transfer from Arkansas State, was on the field last season for his team's 55-0 loss at Georgia, a game during which he suffered a season-ending knee injury. "Man, I was so excited, so happy," Jacobs said Tuesday of when he learned the Razorbacks would open against Georgia. "I had to check because I heard it from one of my teammates, but I just had to go make sure they were right. "When I heard it was the first game, I just got pumped because I didn't finish off what I started when I played them last year because I got hurt. I am ready to show them guys what I've got." Jacobs appeared in all 13 games for ASU in 2018 with 11 starts and finished with 31 tackles. He also had a team-high 4 interceptions, 3 tackles for lost yardage, 8 pass break-ups and 12 total passes defended. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/27/20 - Myron CunninghamrSr/2022, Arkansas, 6-6, 322 (DS#26 OT) + More +

A redshirt senior left tackle entering his second season with the Razorbacks after a stint at Iowa Central Community College, Cunningham played between 290-295 pounds last fall. But he was one of the biggest winners on Arkansas' offensive line in terms of positive weight gains this spring and summer. On the team's updated roster, Cunningham is listed at 325 pounds. He and sophomore Ricky Stromberg have both noted that 328 pounds would probably be more accurate two weeks into the preseason. "I've kind of gotten used to it," Cunningham said of his weight Monday during a Zoom conference with reporters. "I'm still moving good. I'm still light on my feet and everything. I think I'm fine."

He credits the additional weight to time spent at home amid the covid-19 outbreak. In that time, Cunningham said, he was simply eating more and had fewer workouts. He started cooking for himself, too. "I definitely got stronger since then - a lot stronger - and it (really) helps," he added. "I know (Sam) Pittman's referenced it before about sitting on the bull rush and pass pro. It definitely helps. "It makes a big difference in run blocking. It's way easier." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/26/20 - Julius CoatesrSr/2023, Arkansas, 6-5, 289 (DS#999 DE) + More +

It is safe to say Julius Coates is turning heads in Arkansas' preseason practices. The Razorbacks have not yet worked out in full pads, but the defensive end from East Mississippi Community College has received positive reviews from a number of teammates and even defensive coordinator Barry Odom. They have been colorful, too. "I go against Julius just about every day at practice," Arkansas offensive lineman Myron Cunningham said during a Zoom conference on Monday. "He's very twitchy, and for how big he is, he's got a lot of speed. "He's very athletic on the edge." Bumper Pool, a junior and the leader of the second level of Arkansas' defense, is eager to see what kind of season the transfer will put together. He took his description of Coates a step further. "That kid is an animal," added Pool, second on the team with 94 tackles last fall. "He's explosive."

Odom, entering his first season with the Razorbacks after spending the previous four years at Missouri, attributes that explosiveness to Coates' training since arriving on campus. The leaders of Arkansas' strength and conditioning staff, Jamil Walker and Ed Ellis, have transformed his body. Coates is listed at 6-7, 289 pounds on the team's updated roster. He is up 14 pounds since his junior college days. "He's a big, tall, long, explosive athlete," Odom added. "He's become bigger, stronger, leaner, faster, quicker, all those things. I would say if you had a before-and-after picture of what Julius looked like from the day he walked in to where he was when we cut loose here, he maybe transformed as much as anybody." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/26/20 - Dorian GeraldrSr/2023, Arkansas, 6-2, 265 (DS#999 DE) + More +

First-year Coach Sam Pittman is banking on Gerald to produce in the SEC much like he did at College of the Canyons (Calif.), where he racked up 96 tackles, 43 tackles for loss, 22 sacks and 6 forced fumbles in two seasons. The 6-3, 260-pounder was rated the No. 1 strong-side defensive end coming out of the junior college by 247 Sports in the 2018 signing class. "He really, really looks good," Pittman said during the summer. "He's got tremendous foot speed, and he's another guy who should be a leader on our football team." Pittman said he fully expected Gerald to show up when the pads went on. "I've been really pleased with him of course, and I will be when we put pads on. We haven't yet, but I promise I will be. He's too talented for us not to be.

</p>"I've had one-on-one conversations with him about what we needed to do. He is a guy that could be a strong leader for us. Kids look up to him. He is getting his quickness back. He is getting stronger. I really like the kid, think he is smart, a good guy to have in that D-line room." Gerald said leadership doesn't come naturally to him, but he's improving in that area heading into his senior year. "I mean, that's what they put on me," he said. "They told me they want me to lead a little more vocally because ... I never was a guy to lead vocally. I always tried to lead by example, because speaking just never was me. But yeah, I think I've got to be more of a vocal leader this year for the team because I am a senior." - Northwest Arkansas Times

A trio of Arkansas offensive standouts highlights the initial Reese's Senior Bowl watch list released on Thursday by the postseason all-star game held in Mobile, Ala. Running back Rakeem Boyd, tackle Myron Cunningham and quarterback Feleipe Franks are among the 73 SEC players on the watch list. Two other collegians from Arkansas - Arkansas State defensive lineman Forrest Merrill and University of Central Arkansas cornerback Robert Rochelle - also made the list. Boyd returned for his senior season after rushing for 1,133 yards and eight touchdowns last year. Cunningham (6-7, 325 pounds) started in 10 games last season, seven at left tackle, and allowed one sack in 383 pass plays. Franks led Florida to a 10-3 record, a 41-15 rout of No. 8 Michigan in the Peach Bowl and No. 7 final ranking in 2018 as a sophomore. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/19/20 - *Treylon BurksJr/2022, Arkansas, 6-2, 224 (DS#4 WR) + More +

Treylon Burks showed numerous flashes of brilliance during an impressive freshman season at Arkansas. His athleticism and sure hands in the passing game coupled with great elusiveness on special teams, particularly on punt return, landed him on the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2019. He and running back Rakeem Boyd, who rushed for 1,133 yards and eight touchdowns, highlighted a season filled with offensive struggles. Although he did not tally a touchdown last fall, his production provided plenty of optimism and promise for the future at the receiver position. In 2020, Burks can cement himself as Arkansas' go-to target and one of the best pass catchers in a league littered with talented skill players. "He's talented enough to be a No. 1 receiver on several teams, in my opinion," Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said Monday during a Zoom conference with reporters. "We've got to find ways to get the ball to him, whether it's throwing it to him, running him out of the backfield, throwing quick swings to him. "He's a big, fast receiver that we need to get touches to. He's earned that, in my opinion, through the walkthroughs, through his offseason workouts and (Day 1 of fall camp)." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/18/20 - Rakeem BoydSr/2021, Arkansas, 5-11, 213 (DS#19 RB) + More +

After the Razorbacks' first preseason practice under first-year football head coach Sam Pittman on Monday, Boyd said he believes he played a bit on the heavy side as a junior. The tailback was listed at 213 pounds, according to Arkansas' roster. Regardless, he ran for better than 1,100 yards, eight touchdowns and at one point led the SEC in rushing as Arkansas played its way through the second full month of the schedule. Entering a critical year in regards to his draft stock and dreams of playing in the NFL, Boyd is at his ideal playing weight, 206 pounds. He is feeling better than ever physically. "This year, I think I'm seeing a 4-pack. I think I'm seeing a 6-pack," Boyd joked during a Zoom conference with reporters. "I've never seen one of those before on my body. My body has been different. I think I'm just ripping up or something.

"It's a different strength program and I love these guys. They do all the things we need. If you see me at 215, I probably ate a pizza before I got on the scale." On top of that, in another Zoom conference last week, Razorbacks offensive coordinator Kendal Briles spoke highly of Boyd, complimenting the senior's character and willingness to lead. He believes Boyd is an all-around, every-down back. "He's been unbelievable. He's been really, really good," Briles said. "Not just with the running back group or offense - he's been a great teammate overall. I can't say enough good things about Rakeem and how he's been." - Northwest Arkansas Times
