  05/21/21 - Austin NixrSr/2023, Arkansas, 6-2, 325 (DS#999 OG) + More +

The college sports landscape is on the precipice of change, with several states -- including Alabama -- passing name, image and likeness legislation that will allow student-athletes to profit off their personal brands. With Alabama's law set to go into effect July 1, Auburn has taken a step toward helping its athletes "make some money" on the NIL front. The program on Thursday announced the launch of SPIRIT, a comprehensive NIL program designed to "educate and empower student-athletes and prepare them to optimize upcoming NIL opportunities." The new program, which is akin to the one announced a couple weeks ago at Alabama, will include assistance from industry-leading experts when it comes to brand management, social media best practices, time management, financial literacy, financial aid and more.

Under the state's NIL law, which Gov. Kay Ivey signed last month, universities are required to conduct financial literacy and life skills education for their student-athletes. "At Auburn, we are in a relentless pursuit to be the best, while delivering outstanding experiences contributing to our student-athletes' success," athletics director Allen Greene said in a release. "As we embark on the new world of name, image and likeness we strive to implement bold and forward-thinking strategies to create cutting edge solutions." - Birmingham News

  05/10/21 - Tre WilliamsrSr/2022, Arkansas, 6-4, 253 (DS#41 DE) + More +

When former Missouri defensive end Tre Williams entered the NCAA transfer portal in April, the University of Arkansas made contact and the decision to become a Razorback was an easy one. "It was just a perfect fit for me," Williams said. "To have the opportunity to remain in the SEC and play every week and compete against the best is what I love to do." Williams, 6-5, 260 pounds, originally entered the portal in December and committed to Houston in January. He recorded 85 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks in four seasons for the Tigers. He inked with Missouri in 2016 when Arkansas defensive coordinator Barry Odom was the Tigers' coach. "Getting the opportunity to play for coach Odom again was also another big draw," Williams said. "He's a good man, a good coach and a great defensive mind." Williams' goal is to get drafted and play in the NFL. "I think that Arkansas is a place that can allow me the opportunity to accomplish those goals," he said. An ESPN 3-star prospect out of Columbia (Mo.) Rock Bridge High School, Williams chose the Tigers over Arizona State, California, Kansas State, TCU and others. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  05/04/21 - Feleipe FranksrSr/2021, Arkansas, 6-7, 234 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Four former Arkansas football players signed undrafted free agent deals on Saturday. Quarterback Feleipe Franks, who transferred to Arkansas after three seasons at Florida, signed with the Atlanta Falcons. Franks threw 17 touchdowns against four interceptions in 2020. From 2017-19, he threw for 4,593 yards, 38 touchdowns and 17 interceptions with the Gators, leading Florida to a 10-3 record and No. 6 final ranking in The Associated Press Top 25 Poll in 2018. Running back Rakeem Boyd and defensive back Jerry Jacobs, two players who opted out of the Razorbacks' 2020 season, signed with the Detroit Lions. Xavier Kelly, a transfer defensive lineman from Clemson, signed with the Baltimore Ravens. He finished with eight tackles, including one sack, in nine games played last season. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  04/15/21 - Myron CunninghamrSr/2022, Arkansas, 6-6, 322 (DS#26 OT) + More +

Cunningham is practicing this spring at 325-327 pounds, a weight he believes is going to benefit him in 2021. A transfer from Iowa Central Community College, he was listed at 290 pounds in his first season with the Razorbacks in 2019. Through 13 days of spring ball, Cunningham's focuses have been his hand placement, his eyes and reading the defense pre-snap. His footwork at 325 pounds has been a point of emphasis, too. "I've gotten used to it, I feel like," he said. "I feel like it's only going to help me being at that weight this season...I've got to get back to just moving quick like I used to, but that's about it." Defensive end Zach Williams has noticed Cunningham, who has made 20 starts in two seasons with the Razorbacks, improving his play with his hands. "You've got to make sure you get correct hand placement with him, because if not he'll just grab on to you," Williams said. "He's a big boy. There's no way of getting off of that. "I think the best thing with him is his hands. He's pretty good with them." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  04/09/21 - Hudson HenryrSr/2024, Arkansas, 6-5, 254 (DS#999 TE) + More +

There was a collision during Saturday's football scrimmage that involved Arkansas hard-hitting safety Jalen Catalon, which is in no way surprising. The difference in this one was tight end Hudson Henry (6-5, 255) delivered the brunt of the impact instead of being the recipient. "We don't want to get bullied. We want to be the bully," Henry said of the mindset of Arkansas' tight ends. "I made a great play on Jalen. We both had a pretty big collision on the sideline." Catalon, who is still delivering his fair share of big hits, is impressed with Henry's physical and mental growth. "He has definitely got a lot more physical," Catalon said. "You can tell he has started to gain a lot more confidence and is starting to realize his potential and what he has to offer for the offense and to give to the offense. "He is having a really good spring so far. He is having less (missed assignments) and you can tell he is flowing fast and moving fast. You can tell he knows most of what is going on. He has definitely gotten stronger. I learned that the hard way. He has definitely gotten a little bit stronger." Henry, the younger brother of both former Arkansas All-American tight end Hunter Henry and current Razorbacks linebacker Hayden Henry, has battled injuries throughout first two years in Fayetteville. He played in three games and a total of 52 snaps as a true freshman, and finished with 3 catches for 15 yards. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  04/05/21 - *Treylon BurksJr/2022, Arkansas, 6-2, 224 (DS#4 WR) + More +

The Razorbacks have one now comparable to all of those in junior wide receiver Treylon Burks. The 6-3, 223-pound Warren native has rare speed and leaping ability with matching ball skills. Admission is free for Saturday's scrimmage, set to begin at 10:30 a.m. at Reynolds Razorback Stadium. That No. 16 will be running routes in live work might be enough to warrant a few dollars as you come through the gates. He's that good. It was worth a call to Dicus, equally fun to watch during his days. Dicus set the school record with 118 catches in his three years, a record that stood for 25 years before it was broken by J.J. Meadors.

Dicus admires Burks. "He has a lot of talent, no question," Dicus said. "And I think there is hidden talent that we haven't seen yet. Not all of it has been tapped yet. "I think that's the challenge for his new wide receiver coach (Kenny Guiton) and the offensive coordinator (Kendal Briles). He's only as good as the number of times they get him the ball." Obviously, Dicus knows teams will double cover Burks. They did a lot in his first two seasons when Burks caught 29 and 49 passes. He averaged 16.4 yards per catch in each of his first two seasons. There were plenty of highlight-reel catches last year, especially against Ole Miss (11 catches, 137 yards) and Missouri (10-206). Those two games had everyone scrambling in the record books for where Burks ranked. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  03/29/21 - Cade FortinrSr/2024, Arkansas, 6-2, 224 (DS#57 QB) + More +

Coach Jeff Scott repeatedly has praised Fortin's development this spring, and it showed Saturday. Fortin finished 14-of-23 for 224 yards and two touchdowns in the first half for the Green team. Beyond the numbers, he had one of the day's best throws (a 50-yarder to Xavier Weaver on the first play from scrimmage) and one of the best runs (a 23-yard scramble). USF's other experienced option, Miami transfer Jarren Williams, was shakier as the White team's starter. He finished 9-of-19 for 98 yards and a touchdown plus what would have been a fumble in a normal game. Scott doesn't see an advantage to naming a starter this early, so expect the competition to continue into the fall. But Fortin looks like the Bull to beat heading into the offseason. - Tampa Tribune

  03/20/21 - Trajan JeffcoatrSr/2024, Arkansas, 6-4, 266 (DS#19 DE) + More +

Missouri athletics announced this week its intention to welcome full-capacity crowds to Faurot Field for football games this coming fall, returning to a traditional game day atmosphere after a 2020 season altered by the coronavirus pandemic. Saturday's spring game will feel more like 2020 than 2021, however. Second-year coach Eli Drinkwitz and Missouri are set to host their annual spring game at 1 p.m. Saturday, going through a mix of skills, drills and scrimmage. The event will be held with a reduced fan capacity of 6,000, compared to the 62,621 seats Missouri hopes to have available starting with its season opener against Central Michigan on Sept. 4. - Columbia Daily Tribune

Arkansas' Red-White spring football game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on April 17 at Reynolds Razorback Stadium. The scrimmage will be streamed on SEC Network-Plus, it was announced Wednesday. With the exception of Alabama, whose spring game will be shown on ESPN, the spring games for SEC programs will only be available via an Internet stream this year. Games have traditionally been shown on ESPN-affiliated networks for the past several years. This year's spring game will be the first for second-year Arkansas football coach Sam Pittman. Last year's spring practices were canceled due to the outbreak of covid-19. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  03/12/21 - Rakeem BoydSr/2021, Arkansas, 5-11, 213 (DS#19 RB) + More +

Boyd said everything during Pro Day went well for him except the broad jump. He went through running back position drills, caught the ball out of the backfield and even in the slot. Arkansas coaches mentioned last fall that catching passes out of the backfield was one area of Boyd's game that could stand improvement. Boyd talked about how he was "dinged up" the entire 2020 season. He added that his roommate contracted covid-19 and he had to miss games because of it. He still stays in touch with the Razorbacks' staff, particularly running backs coach Jimmy Smith and offensive line coach Brad Davis. Boyd has been training in Frisco, Texas, and he focused on getting healthy. That is about the only concern NFL people had, he said. He is 100% now. He suffered a bone bruise against Mississippi State in Week 2, missed the Auburn game the following week and attempted to rush back despite not being fully ready. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  03/08/21 - T.J. HammondsrSr/2022, Arkansas, 5-09, 185 (DS#192 WR) + More +

TJ Hammonds' decision to return for another run at his senior season provided a lift to this position group. He produced in the last three games after Rakeem Boyd opted out, particularly in the slot, but also in the run game. The coaching staff was high on true freshman big-back Dominique Johnson, a 6-1, 240-pounder, but he did not have a carry. In fact, outside of top backs Smith (134 carries, 710 yards, 5 TD), Boyd (82-309, 3) and Hammonds (14-101), there were only 4 other carries for running backs, and all went to A'Montae Spivey, who has transferred out. Smith proved durable for a 5-9, 185-pounder, and he'll enter 2021 as one of the top returning backs in the SEC. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  03/07/21 - Noah GatlinrJr/2023, Arkansas, 6-6, 307 (DS#999 OT) + More +

University of Arkansas offensive lineman Noah Gatlin is retiring from football after a lengthy run of medical issues, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette has learned. Gatlin, a redshirt sophomore in 2020, won the job at right tackle last season and started the first five games there. He suffered a concussion and did not return to action the rest of the season and was replaced by Dalton Wagner, the 12-game starter at right tackle in 2019. A Jonesboro native, Gatlin has fought through medical issues as a Razorback. He suffered a torn knee ligament on the first day of fall camp in 2019 and missed the entire season while rehabbing from the injury. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  03/05/21 - Cade FortinrSr/2024, Arkansas, 6-2, 224 (DS#57 QB) + More +

The tidbit that Jeff Scott tossed at reporters Tuesday bore a saline aftertaste, like a grain of salt. It may behoove USF fans to digest it as such: Through four spring practices, Cade Fortin appears to be leading the latest Bulls quarterback derby. "Cade Fortin is probably the MVP so far in my opinion through four days," Scott said. That assessment could change by week's end, when the Bulls will have two more workouts, including a closed scrimmage on Saturday. But so far, the 6-foot-3, 222-pound North Carolina transfer - whose 2020 season was disrupted by quarantine and injury - has been "phenomenal," according to his coach. "The way that he has improved and just sped up his processing, delivering the ball, it's like a completely different player than where he was last year at maybe the beginning of fall camp just getting here," Scott added. "And I think again, that's having a year to digest the playbook and what we're asking him to do." - Tampa Tribune

The University of Arkansas football team will open spring football practices on Tuesday, March 9, a UA athletics department spokesperson said on Thursday. The Razorbacks' annual spring finale in the Red-White game is scheduled for April 17. It will be the first set of spring drills for second-year Coach Sam Pittman, who had been on the job three months last March when covid-19 began shutting down athletic competition and eventually wiped out spring football for the Razorbacks and all other colleges. The NCAA allows 15 spring practices for member schools, with designated full-tackling limits. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  02/01/21 - Feleipe FranksrSr/2021, Arkansas, 6-7, 234 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Former Arkansas quarterback Feleipe Franks led a pair of scoring drives and helped the National team defeat the American team 27-24 Saturday at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. Franks, who played the entire second and fourth quarters, completed 9 of 16 passes for 122 yards. He threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kenny Yeboah of Ole Miss with 11:57 remaining to give the National team a 27-16 lead. Yeboah's catch was the game-winning score after the American team scored a touchdown in the final minute to cut the lead to three points.

Franks' touchdown to Yeboah was set up by another long completion a play earlier when Franks threw 29 yards to Louisville's Dez Fitzpatrick on third-and-3. Franks was 3-for-3 for 55 yards on the touchdown drive. Franks completed three long passes - his 22-yard pass into the wind caught by Arizona State's Frank Darby on fourth-and-8 set up a second quarter field goal - but he underthrew his receivers on multiple short passes. Franks opted for check downs on at least six attempts, primarily to running backs. Of Franks' seven incompletions, two were dropped and one was tipped at the line of scrimmage. - Northwest Arkansas Times
