  09/08/21 - Hayden HenryrSr/2022, Arkansas, 6-1, 225 (DS#999 ILB) + More +

Arkansas linebacker Hayden Henry felt helpless watching the first half of the Razorbacks' season opener against Rice. Now in his fifth season after opting to return to school last winter, Henry was serving a half-game suspension for a targeting penalty during Arkansas' 2020 season finale. A hard-nosed, old-school player, Henry came out of the locker room after halftime with an edge. "That's very frustrating," Henry said. "But it is the rule, so I've got to sit out and pay my penalty or whatever. But, you know, I went in the second half and I was a little ticked off, so I thought that kind of fueled me a little bit." Henry turned in a solid Game 1, finishing with five tackles, including one for lost yardage on Rice quarterback Luke McCaffrey early in the fourth quarter with the game still in the balance.

The Little Rock native was fired up after the play, flexing both arms and yelling as he hovered over the ball carrier. On his final two tackles of the game, he teamed up with defensive lineman Taurean Carter, who pitched in six tackles in 26 snaps played. But the hit on McCaffrey, which spun the quarterback around and caused him to get to his feet slowly, was a highlight for Henry. "I don't know if he was crying," Henry said with a grin. "I don't know. I didn't see tears, but he was definitely hurting. He was in pain, for sure." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  09/07/21 - Tyson MorrisrSr/2022, Arkansas, 6-1, 190 (DS#132 WR) + More +

It might not have risen to the level of Franco Harris' Imaculate Reception in the 1972 Super Bowl, but Arkansas wide receiver Tyson Morris' third-quarter catch against Rice was his team's biggest one on Saturday. With the Razorbacks trailing 17-7 just into the second half, redshirt senior Morris hauled in a 31-yard toss from KJ Jefferson at the Rice 26. Morris, who has 27 career catches for 294 yards and four touchdowns, did so one hand with Owls defensive back draped over him and his other arm locked down. The play sparked Arkansas to 31 unanswered points and a 38-17 season-opening win. "It was a catch that had to be made," Morris said. "We needed a spark on offense and we needed something to get us going. When the ball is up in the air, it is our job to make plays and that's what I did." Morris ended the game with three catches for 42 yards, including a 8-yard touchdown catch. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/30/21 - John RidgewayrSr/2022, Arkansas, 6-5, 320 (DS#14 DT) + More +

Arkansas defensive lineman John Ridgeway had an appendectomy performed over the weekend, and his status on a return to practice is not known, a source with knowledge of the situation said Sunday. Ridgeway, a 6-5, 320-pounder who had been working with the first unit much of camp, posted a picture of himself in a hospital room late Saturday with his girlfriend to his Instagram story. A source with knowledge said Ridgeway was scheduled to be released from the hospital on Sunday. Ridgeway's status for the season opener on Saturday against Rice is questionable. The Razorbacks have not released a depth chart, but Ridgeway, a graduate transfer from Illinois State, has worked with the first unit at tackle, as has Isaiah Nichols, Eric Gregory, graduate transfer Markell Utsey and others. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/30/21 - *Treylon BurksJr/2022, Arkansas, 6-2, 224 (DS#4 WR) + More +

Arkansas coach Sam Pittman indicated defensive tackle John Ridgeway is doubtful and receiver Treylon Burks is questionable for the Razorbacks' season opener against Rice on Saturday. Burks, an All-SEC pick last season when he caught 51 passes for 820 yards and 7 touchdowns, has not practiced in several days with an undisclosed injury. Pittman said Burks has "progressed" since the weekend, but said his injury is day to day. "I think we're going to progress him a little bit today, a little bit more tomorrow and then we'll see what happens," Pittman said. "I had a good talk with (associate director of sports medicine) Dave Polanski this morning about it. We're going to play him if he's ready, and if he's not, we're not. I really don't know if he's going to play or not; I have no idea. I think it's going to depend on probably the next two days, how he goes. I don't want to play him Saturday if he hasn't practiced at all, either." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/30/21 - Trajan JeffcoatrSr/2024, Arkansas, 6-4, 266 (DS#19 DE) + More +

Earlier this summer, former Tigers great Markus Golden anointed Jeffcoat the next star along Mizzou's once-vaunted D-line. "He's up next," the Arizona Cardinal tweeted. Now, Jeffcoat gets to fulfill the endorsement. He was MU's most productive edge rusher last year, finishing among SEC leaders with six sacks. In Wilks' new four-man front, Jeffcoat will be in his natural element with his hand on the ground and could become Mizzou's first player with double-digit sacks since Shane Ray and Golden eclipsed the mark in 2014. - Post-Dispatch

  08/29/21 - Myron CunninghamrSr/2022, Arkansas, 6-6, 322 (DS#26 OT) + More +

The University of Arkansas football team has selected three defensive standouts and two offensive starters as team captains, including one repeat selection. Quarterback KJ Jefferson and offensive tackle Myron Cunningham were the picks on offense, while linebacker Grant Morgan and defensive backs Jalen Catalon and Joe Foucha were the defensive selections. The captains were announced by Coach Sam Pittman during Saturday's mock game at Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Morgan served as a team captain in 2020, while Cunningham was a captain for the final two games after tailback Rakeem Boyd opted out last season. Morgan and Cunningham are both seniors who accepted the extra year of eligibility extended by the NCAA due to the coronavirus pandemic. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/27/21 - Koilan JacksonrSr/2022, Arkansas, 6-2, 228 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Arkansas tight end Koilan Jackson's football career has come to a close. Jackson, a redshirt senior whose playing time was severely limited in recent years due to injuries, made the announcement Wednesday in a post to his Twitter account. "After a long talk with my family and Coach (Sam) Pittman I've decided to walk away from the game of football," he wrote. "I just want to thank everybody that gave me the opportunity to play the game I loved since I was born. I wanna thank the fans that supported me through this journey. "It was a tough decision, especially after battling back from an injury and with the season right around the corner, but I feel it was best for me and my life in the future. Forever a Hog."

A former 4-star receiver out of Joe T. Robinson High School in Little Rock, Jackson redshirted during his first year on campus after suffering a knee injury in preseason practice. He saw the field in 14 games over the next two seasons, including 11 as a redshirt junior in 2019. Jackson did not play in 2020 due to another injury. In the last year, he transitioned from wide receiver to tight end, where coaches were hopeful he could contribute when healthy. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/27/21 - Bumper PoolrSr/2023, Arkansas, 6-2, 235 (DS#18 ILB) + More +

Just his name alone makes him interesting. There aren't many Bumper Pools in the world. The senior linebacker for the Arkansas Razorbacks has one of the best names in college football, no doubt. He and Alabama freshman defensive back Kool-Aid McKinstry are two easy picks for the All-SEC name team. Throughout the summer, The Tuscaloosa News is taking a look at an interesting player or person around each Alabama football opponent: not necessarily the best, the worst or the most important person. Instead, the focus for this series is on who's interesting.

Pool earns that label solely based on his name. No elevator pitch needed. The mention of his name leads to immediate curiosity. Believe it or not, it's his legal first name, per Bob Holt of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. It wasn't Pool's given name at birth, though. That was James Morris Pool. But his dad starting calling him Bumper almost right away. "I didn't even know how to spell my full name when I was going through preschool," Pool told Holt. "A teacher asked me to spell my name one day, and I wrote Bumper because that's what my name was to me." Once the linebacker turned 16, he made the switch permanent. His full name is now Bumper James Morris Pool. He's got more going for him than a cool name. Pool put together a strong junior season in 2020 for the Razorbacks as he tallied 101 total tackles. His 11.2 tackles per game ranked second in the SEC. - Montgomery Advertiser

  08/27/21 - Tre WilliamsrSr/2022, Arkansas, 6-4, 253 (DS#41 DE) + More +

Former Missouri defensive end Tre Williams double dipped in the NCAA transfer portal over the offseason and wound up at a place with familiar faces in Arkansas. Williams (6-5, 255 pounds) transferred to Houston in January and was there for three months before deciding to move on. That led to the second jump into the portal, which ultimately reunited him with former Missouri coach Barry Odom, fellow Tigers defensive linemen Markell Utsey and five returning Arkansas offensive linemen he battled against while playing at Mizzou. "I was at Houston and the situation there was just not a good fit for me, so I was looking for a new home," Williams said. "I saw Markell was in the portal as well and I asked him where he wanted to go. "Arkansas also happened to be a good fit for him."

Williams, who was named to the SEC's All-Freshman team, played in 42 games for Missouri from 2017-20 and recorded 85 tackles, 15 tackles for lost yardage and 8.5 sacks. "Really, I am just establishing myself as a pass rusher - not only as a pass rusher, but as a dominant end," Williams said. "Coming into the season, I just have to do what I can do to improve, state my presence out there and encourage my teammates." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/26/21 - *Treylon BurksJr/2022, Arkansas, 6-2, 224 (DS#4 WR) + More +

Six Arkansas football players were included on the preseason All-SEC team voted on by coaches. Receiver Treylon Burks, center Ricky Stromberg and linebacker Grant Morgan were voted to the first team, while safety Jalen Catalon was voted to the second team, and offensive linemen Myron Cunningham and Ty Clary were voted to the third team. All of the players except Clary were voted to the media's preseason All-SEC team last month. Burks was Arkansas' only first-team pick by media. Morgan was a first-team pick and Burks and Catalon were voted to the second team by coaches at the end of 2020. With six players, Arkansas had more individuals represented on the All-SEC preseason team than eight other programs, which appears to signal the Razorbacks' talent is catching up with the rest of the league. Arkansas broke a 20-game SEC losing streak and went 3-7 against an all-conference schedule a year ago. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/25/21 - Cade FortinrSr/2024, Arkansas, 6-2, 224 (DS#57 QB) + More +

USF has named Cade Fortin its starting quarterback, the Bulls announced Monday afternoon on Twitter. The news is notable but not a surprise. Fortin, a transfer from North Carolina, left the spring with an edge in the four-person competition and impressed coaches early in preseason practices. "Cade just picked up right where he left off," second-year coach Jeff Scott said after the first week. "He's had an outstanding fall camp." The 6-foot-3, 221-pound Georgia native was a three-star recruit in high school. He appeared in four games for the Tar Heels and was 23-of-65 for 388 yards and a touchdown in 2018. He also rushed 14 times for 76 yards and a TD at North Carolina. He was limited with injuries and coronavirus protocols last year but still played in two games with the Bulls. He finished 4-of-8 passing for 39 yards with 39 rushing yards on four carries. - Tampa Tribune

  08/23/21 - Trajan JeffcoatrSr/2024, Arkansas, 6-4, 266 (DS#19 DE) + More +

With a sudden and brief news release, Trajan Jeffcoat's college career nearly vanished two years ago. The Missouri defensive end, then a sophomore, was recovering from an elbow injury when just minutes before Mizzou's Oct. 5 kickoff against Troy, the school released a 36-word statement that ended Jeffcoat's season before it got started - and, it appeared, his Mizzou career. "Trajan Jeffcoat is not presently enrolled at Mizzou and will not be with the football team for the remainder of the season. In consideration of student privacy rights, we will not comment further on this matter." Jeffcoat, Tigers coach Barry Odom and school officials declined to discuss the matter. Sources later indicated his dismissal was a university decision and didn't come directly from the football program.

Skip forward nearly a year, and under a new coaching staff in a new season, Jeffcoat was the surprise addition of 2020. He re-enrolled at Mizzou last fall, rejoined the team under first-year coach Eli Drinkwitz and after missing more than a year of action, emerged as one of the Southeastern Conference's best pass rushers, earning first-team AP All-SEC honors. All of which begs the question: What can he do for an encore? "The sky is the limit," defensive line coach Jethro Franklin said. "We just need to get him going, to get him using that elbow and get him striking and shedding and running to the ball and playing with great effort and all that good stuff and then let the chips fall where they may. "He has the right attitude. He has the right mindset. He wants to do things right. As long as he brings those things to the party we're going to have a good time." - Post-Dispatch

  08/23/21 - Dorian GeraldrSr/2023, Arkansas, 6-2, 265 (DS#999 DE) + More +

Determined to piece together a productive 2021 season after two consecutive years filled with adversity, Dorian Gerald sought the advice of a former defensive lineman who reeled in accolades during his playing days. He didn't have to look very far. A first-team NAIA All-American and two-time all-conference performer at Pittsburg (Kan.) State in the 1980s, Sam Pittman has offered Gerald bits of insight and wisdom on what can make the redshirt senior an impact player on a revamped front. Those conversations appear to have resonated. "We always talk about motor," Gerald said Wednesday following the Razorbacks' 11th preseason practice. "We need motor and we need go, go, go, go."

Not every player with the setback history of Gerald would continue to push and fight like he has. He suffered injuries - including a season-ending one to his neck in 2019 - in each of the Razorbacks' last two season openers, and was limited a year ago. Gerald also missed time late last season as Arkansas and its defensive line group battled the effects of covid-19. But all of that is now behind him, and his sole focus is the road ahead. "It's going pretty smooth. Coming off the injury, I've been getting better," Gerald said. "I feel like I've never been injured before. I feel like I'm healthy again, and that's been the main thing for my coaches - being healthy." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/21/21 - John RidgewayrSr/2022, Arkansas, 6-5, 320 (DS#14 DT) + More +

Prior to the start of training camp, Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said that a player the program brought in from the transfer portal would not start for him on Day 1. But if he quickly proves capable of contributing to the Razorbacks in key ways, Pittman said, there was a chance he would start the next day. John Ridgeway, Tre Williams and Markell Utsey - Arkansas' three defensive line additions via the NCAA transfer portal this offseason - are in solid position to potentially start as of Thursday, the team's first day of full pads.

Ridgeway, a 6-6, 320-pound tackle from Illinois State, tied for the team lead with 22 tackles over four games in the team's 2021 spring season. A four-year letterman and Illinois state champion in wrestling, he adds physicality, toughness and edge to the Razorbacks' front line. "Those are great guys," Arkansas linebacker Bumper Pool said. "Ridgeway, he's a big dude. He comes off the ball fast. I think a few linebackers today were talking about just the kind of dynamic explosiveness he's got. I'm excited to see it. "Those guys are going to help us tremendously." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  08/21/21 - Levi DraperrSr/2022, Arkansas, 6-0, 223 (DS#999 ILB) + More +

Levi Draper, a linebacker-turned-tight end who transferred to Arkansas from Oklahoma last year, suffered a shoulder injury in preseason practice and will no longer play football for the Razorbacks. Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said Draper injured his shoulder on the day he was moved to tight end last weekend. Draper was recruited by the Razorbacks as a linebacker, but did not play last season due to a shoulder injury. "His shoulder went out and he has, with my blessing - basically I talked to him about it - and he's medical redshirting, so he's done," Pittman said. "I actually called him in to talk to him about it because he's already had three surgeries in his career, two last year." Draper was injured during Arkansas' season opener against Georgia last season and underwent surgery last October. It is unknown when the other surgery was performed. - Northwest Arkansas Times
