The Blazers lost two of its more productive players from last season in Alex Wright and Antonio Moultrie, a bookend duo that found success throughout the 2021 season. Wright was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the third round of the NFL Draft and Moultrie entered the transfer portal and eventually signed with the Miami Hurricanes. Kelle Sanders returns as the lone starter among outside linebackers and appeared in every game last season, registering 10 starts and amassing 30 tackles (3.5 for loss) and 2 sacks.

He'll take over for the departed Alex Wright at the JACK position after recording four starts at the prime position and six starts as a second JACK on the field. Kyle Harrell and Nikia Eason Jr. are the next most experienced pass rushers on the roster after contributing at a high level on special teams. Harrell has played 36 games for the Blazers, amassing 43 tackles (8 tackles for loss), 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and recovery and an interception, and Eason has 28 games under his belt, recording 32 tackles (8 for loss), 5 sacks and two blocked kicks. - Birmingham Post Herald

There are three certainties to the UAB football program. A Spanish Fort alum on every roster, a productive running game and a brutal and domineering defense. It's time we focus on the latter. The Blazers return 16 total starters, nine on defense, but have a lack of experience at the defensive line position with departures from three multi-game starters. It'll be imperative for the unit to come together quickly to allow UAB's linebackers to wreak havoc in its unique 3-4 scheme.

Fish McWilliams started only two games last season but is battle-tested throughout his time on the Southside. A trio of upperclassmen returns with some playing experience but the Blazers also need contributions from a crop of redshirt freshmen and offseason transfers. McWilliams is the lone starter returning on a defensive line that lost three key members to graduation. He was granted a COVID waiver, reclassified as a redshirt junior, and steps into a true leadership role as the longest-tenured member in the position. McWilliams has appeared in 39 games for the Blazers, amassing 38 tackles (10 tackles for loss), 7.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries. - Birmingham Post Herald
