Will Reichard kicked a 33-yard field goal with 10 seconds left, and Bryce Young and No. 1 Alabama overcame a stifling defensive effort by Texas to earn a hard-fought 20-19 victory Saturday. Young was hit and harassed by the Texas defense most of the game, but the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback put together a big fourth quarter. He had a twisting, off-balance touchdown pass, and then a 20-yard scramble in the final minute to set up Reichard's winning kick. Young easily dodged a blitzing defender, then had wide open field ahead of him to scamper. Young's clutch play rescued Alabama on an uncharacteristically sloppy day when the Crimson Tide (2-0) struggled with penalties and dropped passes and was forced into six consecutive punts in one stretch. Texas (1-1) stuffed Alabama on fourth-and-inches late to set up a go-ahead field goal by Bert Auburn with 1:39 remaining.

Young also spoiled what could have been a program-defining victory for Texas and second-year coach Steve Sarkisian. Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers was knocked out with a shoulder injury at the end of the first quarter. The steady hand of backup Hudson Card and an inspired defense helped Texas build a 16-10 lead early in the fourth, and then drive for the lead again on Auburn's fourth field goal of the day. Young was 27-of-39 passing for 213 yards with the scrambling TD throw to Jahmyr Gibbs that gave Alabama a 17-16 lead. Jase McLellan had an 81-yard touchdown run for Alabama in the first quarter. Alabama avoided its first nonconference loss since 2007 against Louisiana-Monroe in coach Nick Saban's first season. - Alabama/AP College Football

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 1: 1. Will Anderson Jr., Jr, OLB, Alabama, 6-3, 243,...In Alabama's resounding 55-0 season-opening win over Utah State Saturday, OLB Will Anderson quickly showed why he is NFL Draft Scout's top-rated player. His personal stats weren't huge - five total tackles, three solo - but his play was. In the first quarter, with the Tide leading 17-0, he blew up Utah State running back Logan Bonner, creating a vid that went viral as Anderson showed why he is called "The Terminator." - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 1: 15. Jordan Battle, Sr, SS, Alabama, 6-0, 206,...Although situated at strong safety, Battle is as good, or better, in coverage as he is in tackling. Both are at a high level. In Bama's 55-0 dismantling of Utah State, Battle was credited with four tackles and had no interceptions, but hey, they pitched a shutout and allowed only 136 total yards, including a mere 57 in the air. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

Bryce Young's five touchdown passes were nothing all that new for Alabama's Heisman Trophy winner. That 63-yard sprint down the left sideline and other big runs presented a seldom seen side of his game. Young didn't just throw for those touchdowns - all in the first half - he even ran for 100 yards and a score in No. 1 Alabama's 55-0 opening victory over Utah State on Saturday night. It was, he said, a "cool" and "interesting" experience. "I just try to do whatever is best for this team, whatever the defense gives us," Young said. "That's definitely interesting. It definitely wasn't something I was planning. For me, it's just taking whatever the defense gives us. "Today that was just what was available. It's cool." The Crimson Tide began their quest for national title redemption with a not unexpected start-to-finish domination of the six-touchdown underdog Aggies (1-1). Less anticipated: Young's runs.

Known primarily as a passer with a penchant for scrambling and buying time, Young flashed his running ability more than he ever did last season, including a 63-yarder down the left sideline. He also spread the ball around to Alabama's new set of playmakers, with two touchdown passes to both Georgia transfer Jermaine Burton and Traeshon Holden and some handoffs to Jahmyr Gibbs. Young ran five times after netting zero yards thanks to sacks last season with a previous long run of 16 yards. He also completed 18 of 28 passes for 195 yards before exiting one drive into the second half following his TD run. "I see Bryce do that on the regular, so it wasn't really new to me," Alabama safety Brian Branch said. "Just watching him be himself out there is truly amazing. Playing with a Heisman winner, I can't describe it." - Alabama/AP College Football

The university presidents who oversee the College Football Playoff voted Friday to expand the postseason model for determining a national champion from four to 12 teams no later than the 2026 season. The university leaders who make up the CFP's Board of Managers would like to have the new format in place as soon as the 2024 season, if possible. "This is an historic and exciting day for college football," said Mississippi State President Mark Keenum, the chairman of the board. "More teams, more participation and more excitement are good for our fans, alumni, and student-athletes." A process that started 14 1/2 months ago with an optimistic rollout of an ambitious plan, and then was derailed as conference leaders haggled over details and questioned each other's motivations, is now finally moving forward

In a unanimous vote, the presidents approved the original 12-team proposal that called for the six highest-ranked conference champions and six at-large picks, as determined by a selection committee, to make the playoff. The top four seeds would be conference champions and receive byes into the second round. First-round games would be played on campus and the rest at bowl sites. A 12-team, 11-game postseason system to crown a champion could be worth as much as $2 billion in media rights to the conferences that play major college football, starting in 2026. If the new format can be implemented before the current 12-year contract with ESPN expires after the 2025 season, the conferences could make an additional $450 million over the final two years. The current deal pays about $470 million per year. Beyond 2025, there is no TV contract for a playoff. The plan is to take the new format to the open market and involve multiple TV partners instead of just ESPN. - AP College Football

Not only a gifted pass-rusher in his own right, Turner benefits the defense by keeping Will Anderson Jr. from facing double- and triple-team blockers every down. - ESPN.com
