  12/11/20 - DeVonta SmithSr/2021, Alabama, 6-0, 170 (DS#2 WR) + More +

He didn't know it at the time, but Chris Doering was on camera in studio when his SEC career record was broken. Doering was a wide receiver for Florida from 1991-95, starting as a redshirt freshman walk-on and exiting as the SEC record holder for career receiving touchdowns. Doering's record was tied by Amari Cooper in 2014, but it was unbeaten until DeVonta Smith's 10-yard touchdown catch early in the second quarter against Kentucky, the 32nd of his career. Doering's reaction epitomized the inevitability of the moment. "He's just so steady," he said.

Doering is now an analyst for the SEC Network and shared his insights with The Tuscaloosa News on Smith's breakout season that already has him owning one SEC record with more on the horizon. "He's such a good route runner," Doering said. "The thing that's always stood out to me is how good his hands are. Most people on balls behind or aren't perfect have to stop, dip their hip and reach back, and it takes away momentum. He trusts his hands so much to the point on throws most people cradle in, he turns his hands and catches with his thumbs, which is another sign of how much he truly trusts his hands." - Montgomery Advertiser

  12/11/20 - Najee HarrisSr/2021, Alabama, 6-1, 232 (DS#1 RB) + More +

His play has been overshadowed at times by a Heisman Trophy favorite and his top receiver, but Alabama's Najee Harris is nonetheless enjoying one of the best seasons for a running back in school history. Harris has amassed 1,038 rushing yards through nine games, which projects to 1,499 yards over a 13-game season. Alabama will reach the 13-game mark if it makes the College Football Playoff national championship game. If the pace holds, Harris' yardage total would be the fourth-most in program history behind Derrick Henry's 2,219 yards in 2015, Trent Richardson's 1,679 yards in 2011, and Mark Ingram's 1,658 yards in 2009.

Both Henry and Ingram won the Heisman Trophy in those respective seasons, while Richardson was a finalist. Richardson, though, reached his mark in 13 games, while Ingram had 14 games and Henry had 15. Harris will be limited to a maximum of 13 games this season, but had he played in 14, his current pace would project him to 1,615 yards. For a 15-game season, that would rise to 1,730 yards -- or second-best in school history behind the SEC record Henry set in 2015. - Birmingham News

  12/10/20 - Josh JobeSr/2022, Alabama, 6-0, 189 (DS#18 CB) + More +

No UA defender has more pass breakups in the last five games than cornerback Josh Jobe, who's broken up five passes in that stretch. Jobe was targeted by LSU multiple times on the opening possession and has been through many recent games, given Patrick Surtain II's track record, but he has recently produced against increased targets. "The big thing is we didn't give up explosive plays when we were in coverage," UA coach Nick Saban said. "I think Josh has done a really good job for us. He's really maintained a level of consistency in his play, which has really been good all year long." - Montgomery Advertiser

  12/10/20 - DeVonta SmithSr/2021, Alabama, 6-0, 170 (DS#2 WR) + More +

With just two weeks to go in the season, the Heisman race is a virtual dead heat with the front-runners slated to go head-to-head on the final day of the regular season. Florida QB Kyle Trask continues to hold the lead in the USA TODAY Network weekly Heisman survey. But Alabama QB Mac Jones closed the gap this week with help from one of his teammates, who is also making a late push for the award. But while Jones closed the gap thanks to his big night at LSU, the highlight-filled performance of DeVonta Smith on the other end of many of his throws did not go unnoticed. Smith had three touchdown catches and over 200 receiving yards in the first half alone and now has 15 scores and 1,305 yards for the season. He moved into a third-place tie with Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence in this week's survey. - Montgomery Advertiser

2020 BRONKO NAGURSKI TROPHY FINALIST: Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama (6-2, 202, Jr., Plantation, Fla.): Surtain is regarded as the nation's top cornerback and presents a consistent wall out on the edge, having allowed 25 yards or fewer in eight of nine games this season. Teams have targeted him only 36 times with 14 completions over nine games and he has allowed only one touchdown this season. Opposing quarterbacks have a passer rating of 50.2 when targeting Surtain in coverage, fifth-best in the FBS. Against pass-happy Mississippi State, Surtain was targeted once in 47 attempts, and the junior turned it into a 25-yard pick-six. Top-ranked Alabama has had one Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner, defensive end Jonathan Allen in 2016. The Crimson Tide has had a finalist in nine of the last 10 seasons, most recently nose guard Quinnen Williams (2018), safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (2017) and linebacker Reuben Foster (2016). Going back to cornerback Antonio Langham in the award's first year in 1993, five of Alabama's 12 all-time finalists have come from the secondary. A Surtain win would give the SEC three of the last five honorees (Allen in 2016, Kentucky linebacker Josh Allen in 2018). - Football Writers Association of America/Charlotte Touchdown Club
