2020 PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WINNER: Alabama senior wide receiver/return specialist DeVonta Smith, a prolific pass catcher and standout on special teams who scored touchdowns receiving, rushing and returning punts, has been named winner of the 11th annual Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse. The announcement was made today by the Louisville Sports Commission (LSC), owners and operators of the Paul Hornung Award, presented to the most versatile player in major college football. The LSC created the award in 2011 along with football legend and Louisville native Paul Hornung, who passed away on Nov. 13, 2020, at age 84. Smith played in every game this season, helping the Crimson Tide to a 12-0 record, number one ranking and spot in the CFP championships. He touched the ball receiving, rushing, returning punts and kickoffs, and was a member of the onside kick receiving team and often was a gunner on the punt coverage team. - Paul Hornung Award

Star wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, who has been out since suffering a significant ankle injury Oct. 24, is expected to return to practice Tuesday, sources told AL.com. It's too early to tell whether Waddle will be able to play in the national title game but it's at least a possibility, per sources.   01/03/21 - Najee HarrisSr/2021, Alabama, 6-1, 232 (DS#1 RB) + More +

Najee Harris just did a Najee Harris thing when he hurdled Notre Dame's cornerback Nick McCloud -- leaving a socially distant stadium in slack-jawed disbelief. Almost everyone was stunned. Almost. "That's what he do on the regular," Alabama's DeVonta Smith practically said with a shrug after the game. "That's just something that we see normally." The 53-yard run set up Alabama's second touchdown in a 31-14 win over Notre Dame. It didn't end with seven points since Harris was chased down short of the goal line but it was his longest run of the season. Smith is right. Harris has been hurdling players since high school, first showing it in an Alabama jersey at his first A-Day in 2017.

"For a big guy, it's pretty amazing that he can do that," said Nick Saban, who added he'd still rather Harris not do the hurdling. "He's kind of got a great feel when a guy is going to try to cut him, which a lot of guys, smaller DBs, all try to cut tackle, bigger backs. When he sees that head go down, man, he'll go over top of them in a heartbeat. It's been very effective for him." - Birmingham News

  01/03/21 - *Dylan MosesrJr/2021, Alabama, 6-1, 225 (DS#7 ILB) + More +

Alabama linebacker Dylan Moses revealed in an Instagram post Saturday afternoon that he was not fully recovered from 2019 knee surgery while playing this season, resulting in him playing through pain each game. Moses also said he considered quitting football but was motivated by his teammates and family to continue playing. "I been through a lot all my life and I've been strong and persevered through everything. But 2020 took a major toll on me mentally and physically," wrote Moses, who added that his grandmother died from COVID-19 complications.

Moses wore a sleeve over his right leg and went through a 1-on-1 warmup, including extensive stretching of his right leg, from the school's training staff about an hour before Friday's Rose Bowl semifinal game in Dallas. A preseason All-American in 2019, Moses tore his ACL during an August 2019 practice and missed the entire season. He returned to practice this August but acknowledged that he had a "mental block" that coach Nick Saban brought up when he noticed Moses was not performing at his usual level. - Birmingham News

  01/01/21 - DeVonta SmithSr/2021, Alabama, 6-0, 170 (DS#2 WR) + More +

Alabama rolled into another College Football Playoff championship game. DeVonta Smith caught three of fellow Heisman Trophy finalist Mac Jones’ four touchdown passes, Najee Harris ran for 125 yards with a high-hurdling highlight and top-ranked Alabama beat No. 4 Notre Dame 31-14 in the relocated Rose Bowl game Friday to reach its fifth CFP title game. While the location for this Rose Bowl was truly untraditional, the Crimson Tide (12-0, No. 1 CFP) playing for the national title is a common occurrence in seven seasons of the CFP.

The Crimson Tide earned a spot in the Jan. 11 championship game in Miami, against No. 2 Clemson or No. 3 Ohio State. The Tigers and Buckeyes played in the other CFP semifinal at the Sugar Bowl. Notre Dame (10-2, No. 4 CFP), in football’s final four for only the second time, has lost seven consecutive New Year’s Six games since 2000. Alabama led 14-0 after scoring the first two times it had the ball, including an 97-yard drive on which Harris leaped over 6-foot cornerback Nick McCloud just after crossing the line of scrimmage, landed on both feet and then sprinted for a 53-yard gain before getting run out of bounds. Jones threw a 12-yard TD pass to tight end Jahleel Billingsley on the next play. - AP College Football
