  David Gist ran for a pair of touchdowns and Tennessee Tech defeated defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Austin Peay 27-21 in a league opener on Sunday. The Golden Eagles, playing for the first time in 455 days, were outgained 373-156 but scored 20 points off four Austin Peay turnovers. Trailing 14-3 midway through the third quarter, Bailey Fisher threw a 13-yard screen pass to Metrius Fleming for a score. Early in the fourth quarter, Josh Reliford intercepted a pass he returned to the Governors 22-yard line.   NOV 11 OVC CO-SPECIALIST OF THE WEEK: Haidar Zaidan, K, 5-11, 204, Sr., Dearborn, Mich., Tennessee Tech,...Zaidan was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts, including a career-long 54-yards, and finished with 13 points as Tennessee Tech topped Jacksonville State 37-27, its first win over the Gamecocks since 2011. The senior drilled the career-long 54-yarder on the team's first possession to open the scoring. It marks the sixth-longest field goal in the FCS this season. He added field goals of 28 and 21 yards in the fourth quarter and was 4-for-4 on PATs in the win. Zaidan also kicked off eight times for an average of 58.8 yards.   Bailey Fisher passed for 213 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 121 yards and two more TDs to help Tennessee Tech beat Jacksonville State 37-27 on Saturday. The win was Tennessee Tech's first against Jacksonville State since 2011. The Golden Eagles (6-4, 3-3 Ohio Valley Conference) achieved their first six-win season since 2011. Fisher completed 20 of 27 passes and ran 17 times. Darrius Stafford caught three passes for 76 yards, Brad Clark had his first career receiving touchdown on a 26-yarder in the third quarter and Metrius Fleming caught a 3-yard TD pass late in the second quarter. Haidar Zaidan made all three of his field goal attempts, including a 54-yarder to open the scoring. Zerrick Cooper passed for 312 yards, three touchdowns and one interception for the Gamecocks (6-5, 3-4). Josh Pearson caught eight passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Jamari Hester made the 23rd TD reception of his career, tying Joey Hamilton (1996-99) for second on Jacksonville State's all-time list. - AP College Football

Now he's standing up with some of the top freshman players in the country as STATS FCS announced its initial watch list for the 2019 Jerry Rice Award, honoring the top freshman in the Football Championship Subdivision.

It's the second year in a row that Tennessee Tech has had a player in the running as sophomore quarterback Bailey Fisher was a semifinalist for the award last season. Three of the first four recipients of the award – Towson running back Terrance West, Eastern Washington wide receiver Cooper Kupp and Fordham running back Chase Edmonds – have gone on to NFL careers.   Bailey Fisher threw two touchdown passes and the Tennessee Tech defense shut down Murray State's offense in a 17-7 victory on Saturday. Murray State scored on its first possession, Preston Rice's 11-yard pass to LaMartez Brooks capping a 3-play, 45-yard drive after an interception for a 7-0 lead. But the Racers managed only 222 yards the remainder of the game. Tennessee Tech (5-4, 2/3 Ohio Valley) scored on a 23-yard field goal by Haidar Zaidan and trailed 7-3 after one quarter. The Golden Eagles added Fisher's two TD passes -- 20-yards to David Gist in the second quarter and 31 yards to Andrew Goldsmith in the third. Fisher completed 20 of 28 passes for 206 yards with the two touchdowns and an interception. Gist had 22 carries for 107 yards. Aderick Moore had seven solo tackles, nine total. Rice completed 23 of 34 for 196 yards. Murray State (4-6, 2-4) was held to 71 yards on the ground. - AP College Football

  OCT 7 OVC NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Metrius Fleming, WR/RS, 6-0, 173, Fr., Elberton Ga., Tennessee Tech,...Fleming accounted for a season-best 246 all-purpose yards (the second-most by an OVC player this season) in Tennessee Tech's 43-37 double overtime loss at No. 23 Southeast Missouri. The freshman caught a season-high nine passes for 108 yards, rushed twice for 16 yards (including a 12-yard touchdown in the first quarter) and returned five kickoffs to 122 yards (24.4 yards/return).

Fleming had a 31-yard kickoff return with 1:36 to play in the fourth quarter as the Golden Eagles moved an additional 30 yards to tie the game with a 51-yard field goal with 31 seconds to play. Fleming ranks second nationally in kickoff returns (35.8 yards/return), 19th in all-purpose yards (140.0/game - a mark that is second among FCS freshmen), 25th in combined kickoff yards (322) and 36th in receiving yards (427). Only two players in the FCS have more than six touchdown passes in a game this season. The sophomore completed 22-of-34 passes and had touchdown passes of 5, 2, 16, 13, 11 and 27 yards.

It was the most touchdown passes by an OVC player in a game since the 2017 season. He also ran the ball 13 times for 29 yards. In just 15 games in his career, Fisher is already ninth in career passing and 10th in total offense in the Tech record book. He current ranks third nationally in points responsible for (108), eighth in rushing touchdowns (7), 14th in passing touchdowns (10) and 17th in passing yards (1,248).   Bailey Fisher threw a school-record six touchdown passes to help Tennessee Tech beat Eastern Illinois 40-29 on Saturday night and snap a seven-game skid against the Panthers. Fisher was 22-of-34 passing for 269 yards with two interceptions and completed at least one pass to 10 different receivers. The Golden Eagles (4-1, 1-0 Ohio Valley Conference) - who went 1-10 in each of the last two seasons - are off to their best start since 2011, the same year they last beat Eastern Illinois (0-5, 0-1). The Panthers have lost six in a row dating to last season.

Fisher's 5-yard touchdown pass to Austin Hicks capped a 10-play, 73-yard drive that made it 7-7 early in the second quarter and, after an interception by Aderick Moore, D.J. Wilkes' 2-yard TD reception gave Tennessee Tech the lead for good with 7:51 left in the first half. Eastern Illinois fumbled on its next play from scrimmage, setting up a 16-yard scoring strike from Fisher to Darrius Stafford 21 seconds later. EIU went three-and-out on its first possession of the second half before Hicks had a 13-yard touchdown catch and, after the Panthers failed to convert on fourth-and-4 at the Tennessee Tech 28, Fisher hit Stafford for an 11-yard TD to make it 35-7 midway through the third quarter. It marked the first non-conference road win for the program since 2013 and gives the team its first 3-1 start since the 2011 season. The sophomore completed 23-of-37 passes for 314 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and a 17-yard score just before halftime.

With his feet Bailey carried the ball 13 times for 90 yards (6.9 ypc) and scores of 6, 1 and 26 yards. His final touchdown, a 26-yard run with 4:47 to play iced the game. Fisher ranks third nationally in rushing touchdowns (7), fifth in total touchdowns (7), 15th in points responsible for (18.0/game) and scoring (11.0 points/game), 25th in total passing yards (979) and 27th in total offense (274.8 yards/game).
