Middle Tennessee will play San Diego State in the Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 24 on the campus of the University of Hawaii after the bowl game was canceled in 2020 and 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Blue Raiders (7-5) announced Monday they have accepted an invitation to play in the game after winning four of their last five to become bowl eligible. Middle Tennessee will be playing in its sixth bowl in eight seasons and 10th overall under coach Rick Stockstill. San Diego State (7-5) of the Mountain West Conference won five of its final seven to become bowl eligible. This is the second trip to this bowl for both programs. Middle Tennessee lost 52-35 to Hawaii in 2016, while San Diego State beat Cincinnati 42-7 in 2015. Conference USA teams are 8-4 in the Hawaii Bowl overall. - AP College Football

Chase Cunningham threw three touchdown passes, including a back-breaking 75-yard strike to Jaylin Lane midway through the fourth quarter, and Middle Tennessee turned back UTEP 24-13 on Saturday night. Cunningham's 17-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Tate Jr. gave Middle Tennessee (4-4, 1-3 Conference USA) a 10-0 lead after one quarter.

SEPT 26 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Middle Tennessee QB Chase Cunningham keyed Middle Tennessee's first-ever win over a ranked opponent by throwing for a career-high 408 yards on just 16 completions (25.5 yards a completion). It went down as sixth-most passing yards in a game at MTSU and just the eighth 400-yard game in school history. Cunningham had completions of 98, 89, 71 and 69 yards, with the 98-yarder matching the longest in program history. Cunningham's yards per completion mark was 25.5 and the NCAA single game record is 22.9, but the minimum cutoff is 22 completions, so Cunningham fell just short of an NCAA record. Cunningham also ran for an additional 29 yards and another touchdown in the win. - Conference USA Football

For Middle Tennessee State, big plays brought the biggest win in program history. And for Miami, there are big problems. Chase Cunningham passed for 408 yards and three touchdowns, including a 98-yarder to DJ England-Chisholm, and Middle Tennessee State stunned No. 25 Miami 45-31 for its first win in 21 tries against ranked opponents. "It was a butt-kicking from the very beginning," MTSU coach Rick Stockstill said. He wasn't wrong. MTSU (3-1) never trailed, forced turnovers on Miami's first three possessions, stopped the Hurricanes (2-2) on downs on three other occasions and scored on passes of 69, 71 and 98 yards - and had another 89-yard pass in there for good measure. "They coached better than us, they played better than us," Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. "They were better. We didn't do a good enough job. There's no excuse. Real men look in the mirror and do something about it and don't allow any cracks to happen from the inside. We all came here for a purpose and a reason. We've got a lot of work to do." England-Chisholm caught two passes - the first of them being a 71-yard touchdown in the first quarter, the other being the 98-yarder in the fourth - to help the Blue Raiders seal the upset.

Cunningham completed 16 of 25 passes for Middle Tennessee State, including a 69-yard scoring throw to Elijah Metcalf. Cunningham and Frank Peasant also ran for scores for the Blue Raiders, and defensive end Zaylin Wood returned an interception for a touchdown. Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke - the Atlantic Coast Conference rookie of the year last season - was pulled in the third quarter and replaced by Jake Garcia. Van Dyke completed 16 of 32 passes for 138 yards, one touchdown to Henry Parrish Jr., and two interceptions - those coming on Miami's first and third plays from scrimmage. Garcia completed 10 of 19 passes for 161 yards for the Hurricanes, who heard plenty of boos from the fans who showed up to what was not even a half-filled stadium; most were long gone before the final whistle. - MTSU/AP College Football

Jalen Montgomery recovered a blocked punt and returned the ball 19 yards into the end zone for the Blue Raiders late in the first quarter. Chayil Garnett threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Rouse for Tennessee State (0-3) that capped the scoring with 4:45 remaining in the third quarter. - Middle Tennessee/AP College Football

2022 PRESEASON WUERFFEL TROPHY (COMMUNITY SERVICE) WATCHLIST: Jordan Ferguson, Middle Tennessee, Sr., DL,...In 2021, Ferguson successfully launched his first official non-profit organization called Hands Worldwide. With some help, his first event was handing out hot plates of food and water to those in need on the streets of Atlanta during the winter holidays. Later in the winter, he handed out blankets to the homeless in Nashville and Murfreesboro. This is just a small sampling of what he does on a consistent basis. That selfless devotion to not only his teammates, but also the community at large, continues to make the difference in the lives of so many people. - Middle Tennessee Football
