  2023 MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Matt Salopek, LB, Miami,...Salopek, who ranks 11th nationally with 125 tackles, is the first RedHawk to be named MAC Defensive Player of the Year since Quinten Rollins in 2014. He had a career-high 18 tackles in the win over Cincinnati and has recorded double-digit tackles seven different times in 2023. He added 7.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks and an interception for a defense that allowed just 86 points in eight conference games in 2023. - MAC Football

  Highlighted by non-conference road action at Miami (Fla.) and Cincinnati as well as five home games, the Miami University football team announced its 2023 schedule on Wednesday morning. Miami opens the season in Coral Gables, Fla., under the lights versus the Miami Hurricanes on Friday, Sept. 1 and travels to face UMass on Saturday, Sept. 9. Rounding out non-conference action will be a trip to Nippert Stadium to face the Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday, Sept. 16 before hosting Delaware State in the home opener on Saturday, Sept. 23. The matchup with the Hornets will be Miami's annual Football Alumni Day/Hall of Fame Weekend. The RedHawks are a Mid-American Conference best 34-16 in their last 50 MAC games and begin conference play on Saturday, Sept. 30 at Kent State. Rounding out other conference road games will be at Western Michigan (Saturday, Oct. 14), at Ohio (Saturday, Oct. 28) and at Ball State (Saturday, Nov. 25). - Miami OH Football

  Former CU quarterback Maddox Kopp announced Thursday he is transferring to Miami (OH). Kopp, who transferred to CU last winter from Houston, made his collegiate debut by starting the Buffs' finale against Utah. Because he's not a graduate transfer, Kopp would need an NCAA waiver to be eligible to play next season. - Daily Camera

  Although action doesn't officially start until Monday, among the reported quarterbacks in, or planning to be to enter the transfer portal as of Dec. 1 is Miami of Ohio's Brett Gabbert: Gabbert, a fourth-year junior, started as a true freshman in 2019, shared time in 2020, was the fulltime starter again in 2021 and opened this season as the starter before being hurt. He played in just four games this fall and has two years of eligibility remaining. Gabbert, the younger brother of NFL QB Blaine Gabbert, had a big 2021, averaging 264.8 yards per game and throwing 26 TD passes against six interceptions.   NOV 7 SOUTHLAND SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Gage Larvadain, Southeastern - KR/WR - So. - Donaldsonville, La. (Riverside Acad.),...Larvadain broke loose for a season-long 75-yard kickoff return and averaged 44.5 yards per kickoff return in Saturday's 47-31 win at Lamar. He also hauled in five passes for 54 yards and a touchdown to finish with 158 all-purpose yards.   OCT 31 MAC EAST DIVISION SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dom Dzioban, Miami, P, Sophomore, Frankfork, Ill. (Lincoln Way East),...Dom Dzioban averaged a career-best 48.1 yards per punt in Miami's 27-9 win at Akron last Saturday.   OCT 31 MAC EAST DIVISION DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jacquez Warren, Miami, Defensive Back, Sophomore, Durham, NC (Southern Durham),...Warren had five tackles and his first career pick-six in Miami's 27-9 win over Akron last Saturday. The sophomore intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and returned it 62 yards for his first career touchdown.   Brett Gabbert threw for 184 yards and a touchdown, Jacquez Warren had a pick-6 early in the fourth quarter and Miami (Ohio) beat Akron 27-9 on Saturday. Gabbert's deep throw to Mac Hippenhammer over the middle went for 58 yards to set up Miami's 33-yard field goal with 1:11 left before halftime for a 17-3 lead. Warren intercepted a pass over the middle and raced the other way for a 62-yard score. Keyon Mozee added 52 yards on the ground with a 3-yard touchdown for Miami (4-5, 2-3 Mid-American Conference). Graham Nicholson made field goals of 33 and 44 yards. DJ Irons threw for 316 yards with one touchdown and one interception for Akron (1-8, 0-5). He also carried it 14 times for 58 yards. Alex Adams had 10 catches for 115 yards and a score, and Shocky Jacques-Louis added nine grabs for 103 yards.
