  LeCharles Pringle caught a pair of touchdown passes from Felix Harper as Alcorn State built an early lead and defeated Grambling 24-20 on Saturday. Harper was 15 of 23 for 150 yards passing for the Braves (3-2, 2-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) and gained another 23 yards on the ground including a 14-yard touchdown run. Pringle made touchdown catches of 45 and 13 yards, the first put Alcorn State up 7-0 and the latter made it 21-3 early in the second quarter. In between, Harper scored on a 14-yard keeper. Grambling (2-4, 1-2) freshman Noah Bodden, who threw for three touchdowns a week earlier, was limited to 10 of 27 passing for 105 yards with a TD and an interception. Aldon Clark came on late in relief and went 5-for-5 for 67 yards with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Greg White for the final score.   Felix Harper threw for three touchdowns and ran for another and Alcorn State rallied to defeat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 39-38 in the Southwest Athletic Conference opener on Thursday night. Niko Duffey, who had 137 yards on 22 carries, scored his second touchdown put the Braves (2-2) up 39-38 with 3:01 to play. The Golden Lions got the ball to midfield before turning the ball over on downs with 38 seconds left. Harper finished 16 of 31 for 368 yards. Sklyer Perry went 23 of 38 for 316 yards and a touchdown for the Golden Lions (1-2), who led 26-7 at halftime. Arkansas-Pine Bluffs had a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown by Zion Farmer in the first quarter and Tyquan Fleming returned a blocked punt 13 yards for a score. - AP College Football

  Felix Harper scored on a 1-yard plunge to cap a 10-play, 92-yard fourth-quarter drive and Alcorn State rallied late to knock off Northwestern State in nonconference action on Saturday. The Braves' game-winning drive included a 50-yard completion on third-and-10 from Harper to Manny Jones to the Northwestern State 4-yard line. Harper ran it in on third-and-goal with 4:11 left to play. Alcorn State (1-1) managed only a 40-yard field goal by Cristofer Thompson in the first half.

The Demons (0-2) answered on the ensuing possession, scoring on Kaleb Fletcher's 18-yard scoring strike to Kendrick Price and taking a 7-3 lead into halftime. The Demons stretched their lead to 10-3 after three quarters on Eddie Godina's 37-yard field goal. Thompson pulled the Braves within 10-6 on 24-yard field goal 54 seconds into the final quarter. Harper completed 13 of 23 passes for 204 yards and ran for 27 on nine carries. Malcolm Magee picked off Fletcher to end Northwestern State's final drive. Fletcher was 22-of-31 passing for 192 yards with the one interception. The Demons rushed for only 71 yards on 36 carries. - Alcorn State/AP College Football

  2021 SWAC PRESEASON OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR (COACHES): Felix Harper, QB, Alcorn State,...Harper threw for 2,954 yards and 33 touchdowns, along with adding six rushing scores in 2019. He ranked fourth in the FCS in passing touchdowns, fifth in points responsible for (19.7 ppg), seventh in passing efficiency (160.7), eighth in yards per completion (14.5) and ninth in yards per pass attempt (8.7). Harper was one of four finalists for the HBCU Player of the Year award, along with being a finalist for the C Spire Conerly Trophy, which went to the best player in the state of Mississippi. - Alcorn State Football

  2021 ALL-SWAC PRESEASON SECOND TEAM (COACHES): DB Juwan Taylor, Senior, Alcorn State,...Taylor was named the 2019 SWAC Championship Defensive MVP. He matched his career-high 11 tackles and also came away with an interception, forced fumble and a tackle for loss in the victory. Overall on the season, Taylor led the team in tackles with 89 and recorded a pair of interceptions and forced fumbles. He wrapped up a team-high nine tackles in the Celebration Bowl. He also registered four tackles for loss and forced a fumble in the Celebration Bowl. Monroe recovered fumbles against Mississippi College and Savannah State. He was part of a defense that led the nation in turnovers gained with 36. He was named the HBCU National Player of the Week winner after the win over Prairie View A&M where he threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for a score. He also earned a helmet sticker on ESPN College Football Final after the win over Savannah State. In the Celebration Bowl, Harper threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for two touchdowns. He helped Alcorn score 44 points on six touchdowns.   The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its preseason football poll during the Cricket Wireless SWAC Football Virtual Media Day on Thursday with the Alcorn State Braves and Southern Jaguars tabbed to once again win their respective divisions. Alcorn State will look to claim its seventh consecutive divisional title during what will mark the Braves’ final season competing in the SWAC East division. Last season Alcorn State won its fourth league championship in six seasons with a 39-24 win over Southern. Alabama A&M was picked to finish second in the division followed by Alabama State, Jackson State, and Mississippi Valley State. In the SWAC West division the Southern Jaguars will seek their third consecutive divisional title and also look to capture their first league championship since 2013. - SWAC Football

  UTSA senior Solomon Wise has been named a Conference USA Fall Spirit of Service Award winner, the league office announced Wednesday. Wise is one of 14 honorees from the conference's fall sports who are being recognized for their significant community service endeavors, good academic standing and participation in their sport. A native of Coppell, Texas, Wise has been active in numerous community service projects during his time at UTSA. A member of the watch list for the 2020 Wuerffel Trophy, he has served on the UTSA Institute for P-20 Initiatives' Dream Runners panel, volunteered with the American Football Coaches Association, visited local elementary schools as part of the Rowdy Readers program and participated in UTSA's For The Kids Dance Marathon to help raise funds for families of children diagnosed with pediatric cancer. - Texas-San Antonio Football

  Vanderbilt wide receiver C.J. Bolar has announced that he plans to transfer after playing two seasons for the Commodores. "I have officially entered my name into the transfer portal," Bolar wrote on Twitter this week. "I want to thank Coach Derek Mason and staff for looking after me these past couple of years. I am excited for what's to come." The 6-foot-1,190-pound Bolar battled through injuries during his sophomore season, but made six starts, registering 11 receptions for 79 yards. Bolar's most productive game was in a 24-7 loss at South Carolina when he caught three passes for 16 yards. Over the course of a healthier freshman year, Bolar was third on the team with 34 catches, which also tied him fourth all-time for receptions among Vanderbilt freshmen.
