Dematrius Davis and Myles Crawley threw touchdown passes in the first quarter and Alabama State held on to defeat Division II Miles College 21-13 on Saturday night. Stanto Dunn scored late in the first quarter to make it 21-0 but couldn't muster any more against the Golden Bears. Jayce Melock capped a two-play, 59-yard drive early in the first by catching a 14-yard slant pass to open the scoring, a play set up by a 45-yard completion on a wide receiver reverse pass. Crawley threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Darius Edmonds on his first throw of the game to make it 14-0. Dunn capped the scoring for the Hornets (2-0), whose drives covered 59, 56 and 51 yards. After a pair of field goals Miles got back in the game on a 15-yard pass from Jacob Millhouse to Collin Woods with 2:54 to go. A turnover at the Miles 12-yard line with 1:10 left gave the Golden Bears, who were down to their third-string quarterback, a final chance but they couldn't get out of their end before time ran out during a multiple lateral razzle-dazzle play. - AP College Football

Dematrius Davis won't be going far to continue his football career, as the former Auburn quarterback announced Monday that he'd be continuing his college career at Alabama State in Montgomery. Davis, who entered the transfer portal on March 23, spent a season in Auburn, signing with the Tigers in December 2020 - between the firing of former coach Gus Malzahn and hiring of Bryan Harsin.

Recruited by Malzahn, Davis never saw the field during Harsin's first year. Davis was a four-star recruit out of North Shore High School in Texas, where he won two state titles. He chose the Tigers over offers from Baylor, Arkansas and LSU, among others. The second-year player was splitting reps with quarterbacks TJ Finley and Robby Ashford in spring practice prior to his departure, and was expected to take part in a four-man competition between Finley, Ashford, Zach Calzada and himself for Auburn's QB1 spot. Nettles fired a 12-yard TD to Wallace Corker to open the scoring for the Hornets (2-1, 1-0) and, after Jimmie Robinson III scored on a 4-yard run to pull the Wildcats even, connected with Jeremiah Hixson for a 20-yard TD and a lead they never relinquished. Merritt scored on a 1-yard run on the first play of the second quarter to push Alabama State's lead to 21-7. A field goal and Robinson's second TD run pulled the Wildcats (0-4, 0-2) within 21-17, but Merritt again ran it in from a yard out and the Hornets took a 11-point lead into halftime. Ezra Gray stretched Alabama State's lead to 35-17 with a 2-yard TD run in the third quarter.   Earlier this month, CU receiver La'Vontae Shenault resolved a case from when he was arrested on July 5 by Fort Collins Police on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, a license violation and driving without headlights at night. On May 10, Shenault, who was 19 at the time of his arrest, pleaded guilty to possession of alcohol by a minor and was given a three-month deferred sentence. If he can avoid other trouble through Aug. 13, he can withdraw his guilty plea and have his record kept clean. Shenault, a redshirt freshman, caught 17 passes for 193 yards last season. He was suspended for the 2020 season opener because of his July 5 arrest. He was also suspended for the Valero Alamo Bowl for a violation of team rules but was praised throughout this spring by coaches for his leadership in a young receiver room. - Denver Post

Receiver La'Vontae Shenault has a few off-the-field traffic incidents in the past year, but he's also flashed his tremendous talent. In the early going of spring, Dorrell said he's seeing some maturity in the redshirt freshman, who was suspended twice last season but caught 17 passes for 193 yards in the four games he played. "I would say it's an ongoing process, but he's getting so much better," Dorrell said of Shenault, who was recently recognized by the team for his academic work. "He's growing up. Vontae is a very passionate kid. He's doing a lot of really positive things right now. He's doing great in school; he's having his best semester he's had since he's been here in school, so that's a big positive."

Dorrell also said Shenault is stepping up as a vocal leader in the receiver room. "He's doing a great job this offseason, in training," Dorrell said. "He looks great and he's practicing great. There's a positive vibe that he's going through right now. We're hoping there's a consistency that he can develop and maintain for the rest of his career. If he does that, he has a chance to be special." - Daily Camera
