Central Florida Football   After UCF football lost on the road 34-13 at East Carolina this past season, Pirates defensive back Jireh Wilson was named AAC defensive player of the week. Wilson recorded an interception, recovered a fumble and totaled 3 tackles against the Knights. Now, he's joining forces with them as UCF heads to the Big 12 Conference this summer. "When I entered the portal, I wasn't really sure what I was going to get," Wilson said. "I didn't really have any expected destinations. I was open to all opportunities." That included joining a familiar foe in the Knights, a move that Wilson admitted was strange at first.

"I played here twice as an opponent," he said. "Being in the facility and meeting the coaches that I just played against a few months ago was definitely a little weird." Wilson entered the NCAA transfer portal on Dec. 29 and less than two weeks later committed to UCF. "I wanted the chance to play on a bigger stage than the American Conference," he said. "I wanted to be somewhere I could call home, develop a good relationship with the coaches, play in an area where the team has a lot of support like Orlando, a chance to play at the next level and a winning history. "Everything that UCF has is what I was looking for when I entered the portal." - Orlando Sentinel

Simmons, a 6-foot-6, 305-pound sophomore from Helix High School, started all 13 games in 2022 as a redshirt freshman. He played 799 snaps, second only to left tackle Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson among the team's returning offensive linemen.   Southern Methodist Football   SMU added more talent to its offensive line on Monday when former Miami (FL) starting center Jakai Clark announced his commitment to the Mustangs. Clark, a former three-star recruit out of Loganville, Georgia, started the majority of the last two seasons for the Hurricanes. SMU has already signed 16 transfers in this cycle. Five of those transfers played at Miami (FL) with Clark. They'll all reunite in Dallas. Clark is also the fourth Power Five offensive lineman to transfer to SMU. The Mustangs previously added Texas offensive lineman Logan Parr, Missouri offensive lineman Hyrin White and Texas A&M transfer P.J. Williams. - Dallas Morning News

Mississippi State Football   Mississippi State football wide receiver Caleb Ducking has entered the transfer portal, according to reports from The Athletic and On3. The move comes about a month after Ducking declared for the 2023 NFL Draft in a since-deleted tweet and also said he was looking for an agent in a tweet.

Ducking will be using a sixth season of eligibility. He spent two seasons at Holmes Community College before joining Mississippi State in 2020. He redshirted his first year with the Bulldogs. He appeared in seven games in 2021, recording nine catches for 83 yards. After fellow outside receiver Makai Polk left for the 2022 NFL Draft, Ducking stepped into a bigger role. Ducking caught 46 passes for 477 yards last season and led Mississippi State with eight reception touchdowns. - The Clarion Ledger

Wisconsin Football   Quarterback Chase Wolf is no longer with the University of Wisconsin football program and will not return for a sixth season, according to a UW official. Wolf told reporters after helping the Badgers win the Guaranteed Rate Bowl that he was going to return this fall and pursue his master's degree. But after the program secured commitments from three transfer quarterbacks this offseason, Wolf's chances of playing under new coach Luke Fickell and in new offensive coordinator Phil Longo's system greatly diminished. Wolf played in 13 games for UW and made his first career start against Oklahoma State in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in December. He finishes his UW career with 292 passing yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions on 33-of-57 passing (57.9%). - Wisconsin State Journal

Hawaii Football   The run and shoot offense, which became synonymous with the University of Hawaii football program two decades ago when June Jones was coaching the team, made a full-fledged return on Monday morning when the Rainbow Warriors kicked off spring practice. Hawaii went 3-10 in Timmy Chang's first season as head coach in 2022. The Rainbow Warriors did not run the run and shoot in 2022 under new offensive coordinator Ian Shoemaker, although certain run and shoot concepts were installed during the team's bye week after the team had started 1-4. Starting in 2023, the Rainbow Warriors will fully be a run and shoot team under Chang, who ran the offense himself as a quarterback for UH from 2000 to 2004, becoming the NCAA's all-time leading passer in the process until he was surpassed by Houston's Case Keenum in 2011.

The first quarterback to get a crack at running the run and shoot in a game this fall appears to be Brayden Schager, a junior who spent portions of his first two seasons starting games for the 'Bows. Despite that, he has yet to enter a college season as a starter. Schager also spent part of his winter break working with former UH quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison in the Dallas area, where Morrison helped Schager work on some run and shoot concepts and drills conducive to running the offense. - Khon2.com

Tennessee Football   College football fans who believe NIL deals and the transfer portal will be the ruination of their sport should love Tennessee quarterback Joe Milton. Never mind that he's a transfer himself. Milton has become the poster player for a more traditional era of college football. He won't be remembered as the quarterback who left Michigan after losing his starting job. He will be remembered as the quarterback who stayed at Tennessee after losing his starting job. This isn't just a Tennessee story. It's a national one.

College quarterbacks who lose their starting jobs are supposed to race toward the portal as if their career were about to go up in flames. But Milton stood his ground after losing his starting job to Hendon Hooker two games into the 2021 season. Instead of fleeing the scene, he became a close friend to the man who beat him out, and a team leader on a top-10 team. Then, when his friend went down to injury in the second-to-last game of the 2022 season, Milton quarterbacked the Vols to a 56-0 victory over Vanderbilt, and a 31-14 victory over top-10 Clemson in the Orange Bowl. Milton is known for a strong arm. But his strength of character has become just as apparent. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Georgia Tech Football   Each with eligibility remaining, three Georgia Tech players have decided to complete their football-playing careers. Defensive tackle T.K. Chimedza, tight end PeJe Harris and offensive lineman Pierce Quick confirmed to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that they have moved on from playing football at Tech or elsewhere.

Quick, who started eight games for the Jackets last season at left guard after transferring from Alabama, figures to be the most significant on-field loss. Quick was in position to stay in the starting lineup with his remaining two seasons of eligibility but injuries led him to decide to retire. Quick has transferred back to Alabama, where his path to a degree was quicker than at Tech, and is on track to graduate this spring. He plans to pursue a career in coaching. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  02/07/23 - WR Malik NabersJr/2024, LSU + More +

LSU Football   It's fair to look at the returning players and think LSU should have one of the best offenses in the Southeastern Conference next season. The Tigers brought back nine regular starters and added other playmakers to give them one of the most promising units in the league. LSU finished fourth in the SEC in scoring last season at 34.5 points per game, and the three highest-scoring teams - Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama - have to replace their quarterbacks.

Wide receiver Malik Nabers emerged as LSU's top offensive weapon in the Citrus Bowl with 163 yards receiving and one touchdown. He has strong hands in traffic, impressive body control and speed to stretch the defense downfield. As we saw in the bowl, Nabers can even throw on trick plays. After a 1,000-yard season, Kelly said "it's his opportunity now" to be the next great LSU wideout. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Nebraska Football   In an offseason that featured roster overhaul at just about every position, Nebraska's running backs remain mostly unchanged heading into 2023. All four of Nebraska's top running backs from last year - Anthony Grant, Ajay Allen, Rahmir Johnson and Gabe Ervin Jr. - are back for another season. Running backs coach EJ Barthel has already gotten to work identifying the strengths in his room. Barthel called Grant a "powerful runner," while Allen is "dynamic" and Johnson has "elite speed." Their collective talents led Nebraska to add talent at other positions, with incoming freshman Kwinten Ives being the only scholarship addition at running back.

"The transfer portal wasn't something I was really interested into, or that Coach Rhule wasn't interested into," Barthel said on Jan. 12. "After evaluating the tape and looking at some of the guys on the roster, I'm just really excited about the group. There's a lot of potential out there in how they run the football." Grant was Nebraska's most consistent running back in 2022, handling double-digit carries in all 12 games. However, the success of those carries was highly variable - Grant totaled 600 of his 915 rushing yards in the first six games of the season before struggling against the Big Ten's best run defenses. - Lincoln Journal Star

Ohio State Football   Just over two months after Ohio State ended its season with a College Football Playoff semifinal loss to Georgia, kicker Noah Ruggles sent out a final message to Buckeye fans. As time expired against the Bulldogs in the Peach Bowl, Ruggles missed a 50-yard field goal attempt wide left to secure Georgia's place in the national championship game against TCU, beating Ohio State 42-41. "If there is one thing I have learned from my journey it is no matter how dark life seems at times, moments of adversity have provided me an opportunity for unimagined growth, humility and appreciation," Ruggles said in an Instagram video Sunday.

He went on to share his gratitude to his coaches and teammates who "inspire him through my own trials," his family who has sacrificed, loved and supported him, and the people behind the scenes who "serve others selflessly." "I've witnessed the truth of Romans 8:28 and I'm humbled by how God rewards all things for the good of those who love him, but have been called according to his purpose," Ruggles continued. "From my very kick as a Buckeye to my very last, I put my faith in God, praying to give him all the glory. So I may not see what he is going to do next, but I've learned to trust him with all of it. I'm a Buckeye for life." Ruggles, a former North Carolina transfer, is one of the more decorated kickers in Ohio State history. He has the No. 1 and No. 3 kick scoring seasons in school history, setting the single-season Ohio State record with a field goal percentage of 95.2%. - Columbus Dispatch

Washington Football   From the diamond at Dudy Noble Field to the gridiron at Davis Wade Stadium, Super Bulldog Weekend will look different in Starkville this year. Mississippi State is hosting the annual event April 14-16 which centers around a baseball series against rival and reigning national champion Ole Miss. However, this year's festivities will have new touches which were announced by the university Monday.

At noon on April 15, Mississippi State football will host its spring game. In previous seasons, former coach Mike Leach implemented a format resembling an organized scrimmage as opposed to the traditional spring game. First-year coach Zach Arnett is returning to the typical format of maroon vs. white. The baseball matchup following the spring football game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. Following the game, country music artist Brett Eldredge will perform at Dudy Noble Field. - The Clarion Ledger
