 Brayden Schager, Transfer, Player News

  03/04/23 - QB Brayden SchagerSr/2025, Transfer, 6-3, 225 (DS#999 QB) + More +

For the University of Hawaii football team, spring practice ended almost as soon as it began. The Rainbow Warriors were the second earliest team in the country to begin spring practices on Feb. 6, only behind Bowling Green. On Friday, spring ball ended for the 'Bows in order to cater to construction set to take place at UH-Manoa's grass practice fields, as well as the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.

Over the last four weeks, the Rainbow Warriors installed a base run and shoot playbook on offense, which the team plans to run under the guidance of head coach Timmy Chang, who ran the offense himself for UH from 2000 to 2004. Hawaii's 2023 schedule, which was released on Thursday, begins on Aug. 26 at Vanderbilt. - KHon2.com

The run and shoot offense, which became synonymous with the University of Hawaii football program two decades ago when June Jones was coaching the team, made a full-fledged return on Monday morning when the Rainbow Warriors kicked off spring practice. Hawaii went 3-10 in Timmy Chang's first season as head coach in 2022. The Rainbow Warriors did not run the run and shoot in 2022 under new offensive coordinator Ian Shoemaker, although certain run and shoot concepts were installed during the team's bye week after the team had started 1-4. Starting in 2023, the Rainbow Warriors will fully be a run and shoot team under Chang, who ran the offense himself as a quarterback for UH from 2000 to 2004, becoming the NCAA's all-time leading passer in the process until he was surpassed by Houston's Case Keenum in 2011.

The first quarterback to get a crack at running the run and shoot in a game this fall appears to be Brayden Schager, a junior who spent portions of his first two seasons starting games for the 'Bows. Despite that, he has yet to enter a college season as a starter. Schager also spent part of his winter break working with former UH quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison in the Dallas area, where Morrison helped Schager work on some run and shoot concepts and drills conducive to running the offense. - Khon2.com

  11/20/22 - QB Brayden SchagerSr/2025, Transfer, 6-3, 225 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Brayden Schager threw three touchdown passes and Dedrick Parson had 19 carries for 115 yards - including a 34-yard touchdown with 2:51 to play and Hawaii beat UNLV 31-25 Saturday night. Schager completed 16 of 27 passes for 202 yards with no interceptions for Hawaii (3-9, 2-5 Mountain West Conference). The Rainbow Warriors snapped a four-game losing streak. UNLV (4-7, 2-5) has lost six games in a row after winning four of its first five games this season. Adam Plant Jr.'s strip-sack of Schager was returned for a touchdown by Elijah Shelton to trim the Runnin' Rebels' deficit to 24-22 with 8:13 to play but Parson's TD gave the Rainbow Warriors a nine-point lead with 2:51 to play. Doug Brumfield passed for 288 yards and a touchdown and added 55 yards rushing for UNLV. Kyle Williams added five receptions for 111 yards. - Hawaii/AP College Football

  08/20/21 - QB Brayden SchagerSr/2025, Transfer, 6-3, 225 (DS#999 QB) + More +

The training camp grind for the University of Hawaii football team is at a machine like form as the morning workouts have had the intensity dialed up as depth chart competitions heat up less than three weeks away from kickoff at UCLA. As for the quarterback position, fourth year sophomore Chevan Cordeiro enters 2021 as the unquestioned signal caller, having already posted 41-hundred yards of total offense with 38 touchdowns in 25 career games. With added size and a second year of familiarity to the playbook under head coach Todd Graham, expectations are high for the Saint Louis graduate. Clarity on the competition for the number two position at QB cleared up this week, with true freshman Brayden Schager taking those snaps prior to the departure of Boone Abbot who announced his intention to transfer on Tuesday.

According to offensive coordinator Bo Graham, the 2021 graduate of Highland Park High School in Dallas, Texas has earned the trust of the offense in the ultra important role of being next in line. "Yeah, Brayden has stepped up as the number-2 guy. Really big arm. I think he's a really smart player. He's a guy that can process information quickly. I think that is a big part of what we do and couldn't be more proud of his development. In the last couple weeks we've challenged him and he's really stepped up," said Graham. As a senior in high school, Schager led Highland Park to an undefeated regular season and district title, en-route to being named the District 7-5A Most Valuable Player after completing 62 percent of his attempts for 3,102 yards and 24 touchdowns to go with nine rushing scores. - Khon2.com
