Butler Football   Reagan Andrew threw three touchdown passes and ran for one and Butler beat NCAA Division II-member Upper Iowa 40-7 in a season opener on Saturday. The Bulldogs used a quarterback rotation in their first game without graduated starter Brett Bushka, the 2024 Pioneer League offensive player of the year. In all, four quarterbacks attempted at least one pass. Nick Howard, a graduate transfer from Dartmouth who helped lead the Big Green to a share of the Ivy League title in 2023, got the start and scored the game's first touchdown, punching over from the 1 after Nick Bafka returned an interception 24 yards to the Upper Iowa 8. Howard also threw a 58-yard touchdown strike to Derek Allen Jr. for a score.

Andrew's first play was an interception by Zacarius Murray that gave the Peacocks the ball at the Butler 24. He came right back to threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to William Enneking midway through the seconds quarter and a 70-yard TD to Luke Wooten just before halftime. Upper Iowa's lone touchdown occurred after its defense forced Butler to punt from its own 17 and Darryl Overstreet Jr. cashed in by throwing 23 yards to Eddie Burgess in the second. - AP College Football

Wagner Football   Jake Cady threw for three touchdowns, Damien Mazil added 135 yards passing and another touchdown, and Wagner eased by Virginia Lynchburg 46-7 on Saturday for the Seahawks' first season-opening win since 2018. Wagner scored on the second play from scrimmage and cruised from there. Jaylen Bonelli made a 20-yard touchdown grab on fourth down for a 14-0 lead, and Wagner added a safety and a field goal later in the first quarter for a 19-0 lead.

After Virginia Lynchburg pulled within 19-7, Cady led Wagner on two straight scoring drives. He connected with Bonelli from 28-yards out and Sekou Kamau from the 4 for a 32-7 halftime lead. Cady added a 32-yard connection with Teree McDonald in the third. Bonelli, who became the second Seahawk to win NEC offensive rookie of the year last season, finished with four catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Last season, Bonelli led Wagner with 40 receptions for 627 yards and four touchdowns. Matthew Jenks was 16 of 24 for 155 yards with one touchdown and one interception for Virginia Lynchburg, a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). - AP College Football

Vanderbilt Football   Diego Pavia scored on a 4-yard touchdown run in overtime as Vanderbilt upset Virginia Tech 34-27 on Saturday in the season opener for both teams with the Commodores rallying after blowing a 17-point lead. The graduate transfer from New Mexico State and the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year needed four plays to put the Commodores ahead in overtime. He finished rushing for 104 yards and threw for 190 yards. Virginia Tech tried switching up quarterbacks in its try in overtime.

Collin Schlee came in on a sweltering day when Kyron Drones threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns. Drones came in for a run and picked up 2 yards. Then Schlee was sacked on third down. His throw to Da'Quan Felton went out of the back of the end zone, starting a big celebration by Vanderbilt. Pavia nearly won the game in regulation. After Virginia Tech took its only lead at 27-20 with 4:12 left, he capped a 70-yard drive with an 8-yard TD pass to Sedrick Alexander with 1:51 left. He set up Brock Taylor for the potential game-winning 43-yard field goal that missed wide right, sending the game into overtime. He helped Vanderbilt stun the Hokies, who not only came in favored by 13 1/2 points looking to build on the momentum from winning the Military Bowl last December to go 7-6. - AP College Football

East Tennessee State Football   Cade McNamara threw three second-half touchdown passes and No. 25 Iowa cruised to a season-opening victory without coach Kirk Ferentz, pounding Illinois State 40-0 on Saturday. Ferentz served a one-game suspension imposed by the university for a recruiting contact violation that is under investigation by the NCAA. Assistant coach Seth Wallace ran the team in his absence. It was the first game Ferentz had missed in his 26 seasons as the Hawkeyes' coach. McNamara, who missed the final nine games of last season with a knee injury, threw touchdown passes of 7 and 19 yards to freshman wide receiver Reece Vander Zee. He also tossed a 31-yard TD pass to Jacob Gill to help the Hawkeyes pull away after leading 6-0 at halftime. Kaleb Johnson rushed for 119 yards, including touchdown runs of 64 and 18 yards in the fourth quarter.

McNamara, who completed eight consecutive passes to open the second half, finished 21-of-31 passing for 251 yards. It was the first game for new Iowa offensive coordinator Tim Lester, who is taking over a unit that finished last in the nation in total offense last season and averaged just 15.4 points per game, which ranked 129th out of 130 FBS teams. Iowa posted 147 yards of total offense and two Drew Stevens field goals in the first half, but it had 180 yards and 11 first downs in the third quarter. The Hawkeyes finished the game with 492 yards of total offense. Iowa's defense held Illinois State to 189 yards, sacking Tommy Rittenhouse four times. Rittenhouse was 10-of-20 passing for 119 yards. - AP College Football

Maryland Football   Billy Edwards Jr. threw two touchdown passes to Tai Felton, and Maryland's defense was as good as advertised in a 50-7 victory over UConn in a season opener on Saturday. The big question facing the Terrapins this season is how they'll do without Taulia Tagovailoa, who brought them some rare stability at quarterback for the last four years. Edwards, who guided Maryland to a win over Auburn in the Music City Bowl last season, started the game and completed his first seven passes. He went 20 of 27 for 311 yards and two TDs. Felton caught seven passes for 178 yards, scoring on strikes of 18 and 75 yards from Edwards.

NC State transfer MJ Morris also played a bit at quarterback, although he was shaken up in the fourth quarter. Then Cameron Edge came on and threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Josiah McLaurin. Nolan Ray scored on a 48-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that made it 14-0, and Roman Hemby scored from 4 yards out in the third. DeJuan Williams capped the scoring with a 9-yard run with 1:17 remaining in the game. The Terps' defense has steadily improved over the past few years, and UConn didn't score until it was 30-0 late in the third quarter. Joe Fagnano found TJ Sheffield for a 27-yard touchdown. - AP College Football

Pittsburgh Football   Redshirt freshman Eli Holstein threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns and running back Desmond Reid scored twice as Pittsburgh and its new-look offense opened the season with a 55-24 win over Kent State on Saturday. Holstein, a transfer from Alabama, completed 29 of 39 passes while efficiently operating first-year offensive coordinator Kade Bell's uptempo system. Holstein hit Kenny Johnson, Konata Mumpfield and Raphael Williams for scores as the Panthers eventually pulled away from the Golden Flashes. Reid, who followed Bell from Western Carolina to Pitt, put together a dazzling 78-yard punt return for a score in the first quarter. The 5-foot-8, 175-pound Reid also sprinted up the middle for a 46-yard touchdown while racking up 231 all-purpose yards as the Panthers moved the ball at will for most of the afternoon.

Pitt rolled up 554 yards of total offense, an encouraging debut coming off a 3-9 season in which the Panthers finished last in the ACC in points and yards. Those struggles led longtime Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi to hire the 31-year-old Bell to bring the Panthers into the 21st century. The early returns were promising. Holstein made a series of nice anticipatory throws. Devin Kargman passed for 181 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for the Golden Flashes, who hung around into the second half. Naim Muhammad returned a fumbled punt 36 yards for a score, Alex Branch picked off Holstein in the end zone to end a Pitt scoring threat and when Kargman hit Luke Floriea with a 29-yard strike early in the third quarter, Kent State was within 28-21. - AP College Football

Louisville Football   Tyler Shough passed for four touchdowns in his Louisville debut, freshman Isaac Brown added a 77-yard scoring run and the Cardinals scored on six of their first seven possessions to overwhelm Austin Peay 62-0 in Saturday's season opener for both teams. Louisville flexed its muscle right away against the FCS Governors and never let up in the inaugural meeting between schools that each won at least nine games and reached the postseason last year. The Cardinals gained 56 yards on their first three plays alone, though that game-opening drive stalled near the red zone and they had to settle for Brock Travelstead's 30-yard field goal.

They added seven offensive touchdowns from there, with Shough's arm leading the way toward a 38-0 halftime lead. The Texas Tech transfer completed 18 of 24 passes for 232 yards in just two quarters, while his TD total tied Browning Nagle for the best starting debut by a Louisville QB. Jadon Thompson pulled in two of those scores for 33 and 5 yards, the second score coming just two plays after T.J. Capers' 29-yard interception return to the Austin Peay 13. Ja'Corey Brooks and tight end Mark Redman caught scoring passes of 9 and 21 yards, while Keyjuan Brown rushed for a 4-yard score as Louisville outgained APSU 321-82 at the break. - AP College Football

Leading only 6-0 at halftime, Georgia finally got its offense rolling in the third quarter with a pair of 75-yard touchdown drives, capped by Colbie Young's 7-yard reception and Nate Frazier's 1-yard run. Beck tacked on a 40-yard TD pass to London Humphreys that sent the Clemson side of Mercedes-Benz Stadium heading for the exits.   Purdue Football   Hudson Card connected on 24 of 25 passes, including his final 17 in a row, for 273 yards and four touchdowns in leading Purdue to a 49-0 romp over Indiana State in Saturday's season opener for both teams. Card threw for 168 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Boilermakers to a 21-0 halftime lead. Card threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Max Klare in the first quarter and a pair of 8-yard TD passes to Jaron Tibbs and De'Nylon Morrissette in the second quarter.

Purdue expanded the lead with a pair of TDs in the third quarter, a 6-yard run by Reggie Love III and a 31-yard pass from Card to Leland Smith. The Boilermakers expanded the lead to 42-0 on Elijah Jackson's 69-yard touchdown run in the first five minutes of the fourth. A blocked punt led to Purdue's final score, a 4-yard TD run by Jaheim Merriweather. Devin Mockobee was the Boilermakers' leading rusher with 89 yards on 11 carries.   Texas Christian Football   Josh Hoover threw for 353 yards and the go-ahead touchdown with 3:13 to play to lead TCU to a 34-27 victory over Stanford in the season opener for both teams on Friday night. "We talked a lot about about being mentally tough," coach Sonny Dykes said. "I thought we were. We got down and guys never blinked. When we had to get stops defensively, we got them. When we had to score touchdowns at the end on offense, we scored touchdowns." After Stanford (0-1) took the lead midway through the fourth quarter following a missed field goal by the Horned Frogs (1-0), Hoover engineered an efficient 74-yard drive to give TCU the win.

He completed all six passes for 67 yards, capping it with a 4-yard TD to Jack Bech that gave the Horned Frogs a 27-24 lead they didn't relinquish. Hoover also threw a TD pass on the opening drive of the game and scored on a 1-yard sneak in the third quarter. "These are the ones I love," Hoover said about the late-game drive. "In my entire life, I felt like I've been a guy that lives for those situations. I think we learned a lot from those situations we had last year, and we worked on it all season. Tonight, you saw what happened. We went down there and scored when we needed to." Cam Cook put the game away with a 7-yard TD run with 1:51 to play. That all led to a 10th straight home loss for the Cardinal, who are still seeking their first win at Stanford Stadium under second-year coach Troy Taylor after going 0-7 last season. - AP College Football

Wisconsin Football   Wisconsin's only punt of the nght resulted in arguably the biggest play of the game. The Badgers were trailing early in the fourth quarter when a punt from Atticus Bertrams bounced sideways and hit Western Michigan's DaShon Bussell, who was trying to get away from it. Wisconsin's Austin Brown pounced on the loose ball at Western Michigan's 20-yard line. That turnover resulted in a Tawee Walker 6-yard touchdown run that put Wisconsin ahead for good with 10:35 remaining in the Badgers' 28-14 season-opening victory Friday night. "That completely flipped the field, took all the momentum out of their sails and put it into ours," Wisconsin safety Hunter Wohler said. "We were able to capitalize and finish the game out." Walker, an Oklahoma transfer, rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Chez Mellusi led Wisconsin's rushing attack with 74 yards and a touchdown on 19 attempts.

Western Michigan's Jalen Buckley rushed for 64 yards and had two 1-yard touchdown runs. Wisconsin, which entered as a 24 1/2-point favorite, had a tougher time than expected before winning for the 28th time in its last 29 home openers. The exception was a 16-10 loss to Penn State in 2021. "It was a challenge," Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell said. "I think more than anything you've got to find ways to win. That's what we did tonight." On his go-ahead touchdown, Walker bounced off cornerback Aaron Wofford inside the 5 and bulled his way into the end zone. Tyler Van Dyke's two-point conversion pass to Trech Kekahuna made it 21-14 with 10:35 left. Wisconsin's Aaron Witt and Nyzier Fourqurean stopped Buckley on fourth-and-1 from midfield to end Western Michigan's next possession. Van Dyke then scored from 6 yards out to make it 28-14 with 3:17 left. Xavier Lucas picked off a Hayden Wolff pas with less than two minutes remaining to seal the victory. - AP College Football

Michigan State Football   Kay'Ron Lynch-Adams had a 63-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter and Michigan State barely beat Florida Atlantic 16-10 Friday night. The Spartans (1-0) were sloppy in coach Jonathan Smith's debut. Aidan Chiles threw an interception on the game's opening snap, recovered his fumble to end the second drive and Montorie Foster Jr. lost the football on Michigan State's third drive. It didn't go much smoother in the second half. Chiles had a chance to put the Spartans ahead by more than two touchdowns late in the third quarter, but Ed Woods stepped in front of a pass in the flat at the Florida Atlantic 2 and returned it 58 yards. "I'm happy with the win," Chiles said. "I'm not happy with how I performed." Cam Fancher converted a fourth-and-1 with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jayshon Platt, cutting the Owls' deficit to six points.

Smith went for it on fourth-and-1 from the Florida Atlantic 9 on the ensuing drive, instead of kicking a short field goal for a nine-point lead, and Lynch-Adams was stopped short on a run early in the fourth quarter. "That was probably overly aggressive," said Smith, adding in hindsight kicking for a two-score lead may have been the wise move. Smith's defense responded, forcing the Owls to turn it over on downs at the Michigan State 41 with 6:53 remaining. Fancher later came up short on a fourth-and-1 run near midfield and nearly drew a targeting penalty that didn't stand after review. The Spartans, though, were pushed back 30 yards by two penalties, including one for unnecessary roughness on Jordan Turner for hitting Fancher, after he was ruled down. - AP College Football

Auburn Football   Jackson Arnold threw four touchdown passes - three to newcomer Deion Burks - and No. 16 Oklahoma routed Temple 51-3 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams. Oklahoma forced six turnovers and held Temple to 197 yards in its first game as a member of the Southeastern Conference. The Sooners joined the league this summer after a long run in the Big 12. Arnold, a sophomore, completed 17 of 25 passes for 141 yards in his first career victory as a starting quarterback for the Sooners. Burks, a transfer from Purdue, never caught more than two touchdown passes in a game for the Boilermakers. He had three scores at halftime Friday and finished with six catches for 36 yards.

Freshman Taylor Tatum ran for 66 yards and a touchdown on just four carries, the best run a 35-yard burst that showed off some of his immense potential. The Sooners led 34-0 at the half. They forced four turnovers and held the Owls to 80 yards before the break. Oklahoma's Jaren Kanak returned a fumbled punt return 21 yards for a touchdown to put the Sooners up 44-3 early in the fourth quarter. Forrest Brock passed for 128 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions for Temple. The Owls fumbled four times and lost them all. - AP College Football

Oregon State Football   Jaquez Moore, Jeremiah Hasley and Eli Pancol scored short touchdowns while Duke's defense racked up eight sacks as the Blue Devils beat Elon 26-3 on Friday night in their first game under Manny Diaz. It wasn't a big offensive day for Duke (1-0), which often had to grind its way through drives while quarterback Maalik Murphy - a touted transfer from Texas - struggled to connect deep on multiple tries and threw a fourth-quarter pick as he tried to push one ball downfield. Still, the Blue Devils' defense didn't need much help, repeatedly swarming the line of scrimmage and getting to seventh-year quarterback Matthew Downing. The Blue Devils had three sacks in the first two possessions, tallied five by halftime and never let Downing - who had stops at Georgia, TCU and Louisiana Tech - get comfortable.

Elon (0-1), a Championship Subdivision program chasing its first win against a Bowl Subdivision foe, finished with just 140 total yards. Jack Berkowitz kicked a 39-yard field goal with 14 seconds left to avoid the shutout. Moore scored Duke's first touchdown from 7 yards out around the left side with less than a minute before halftime, while Hasley had a 1-yard snag in the right flat from Murphy midway through the third quarter for a 19-0 lead. Murphy added a clinching score, zipping a 7-yard throw to Pancol near the left pylon to make it 26-0 with 4:06 left. He finished with 291 yards on 26-for-40 passing. - AP College Football

Army Football   Bryson Daily and Kanye Udoh both ran for two touchdowns and Army cruised to a 42-7 victory over FCS-member Lehigh in a season opener on Friday night. Army marched 80 yards in nine plays the first time it had the ball, scoring on a 1-yard quarterback plunge by Daily for a 7-0 lead. Lehigh answered with a nine-play, 75-yard drive. Luke Yoder raced 18 yards for a touchdown on third-and-2 to tie the game at 7 after one quarter. Daily scored on another 1-yard run to cap a 13-play, 76-yard drive to put the Black Knights up 14-7 early in the second quarter. Army took a 21-7 lead into halftime after Udoh finished off a 10-play, 79-yard drive with a 13-yard run.

Noah Short's 3-yard scoring run in the third quarter pushed Army's advantage to 28-7. The Black Knights used 12 plays to score midway through the final quarter with Udoh gaining the final yard in a march that covered 80 for a 35-7 advantage. Army ran 54 plays on its five touchdown drives, taking 25:37 off the clock. Short, Daily and Udoh combined to rush for 236 yards on 40 carries.
