Covering more than 1,200 miles, all on the road from Oregon to Arizona, gives a man plenty of time to think. Time to hear recruiting pitches. Time to ask questions. Time to choose where to take the next turn on the road. All those hours are welcome if you're a high-profile player in college football's NCAA transfer portal. That's where Tyler Shough found himself in mid-February: in the portal, on the road, hearing his cell phone buzz. Something about Matt Wells and Sonny Cumbie, the research Shough had done on the Texas Tech coaches and the Red Raiders' roster, persuaded him more than anything else. "It was a long process," Shough said this past week.

"That was when I was driving back from Oregon to Arizona, a 21-hour car ride. I was pretty much on the phone that entire time. It really came down to...the opportunity to come in and compete, a coaching staff I had a good relationship with and a good supporting cast around me. "It obviously wasn't an easy decision, because there were a lot of schools that had that offer (extended), but Texas Tech was the best opportunity and overall team that I wanted to be a part of and wanted to grow in. So I'm definitely happy with it and excited to get better." Shough, who started all seven games Oregon played last year during his sophomore season, joined his new team two weeks ago. The Red Raiders have had nine of the allotted 15 sessions of spring practice, Shough having arrived in time to take part in the past seven. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound junior finished degree requirements at Oregon in March. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal
